Both provide the same things; souvenirs, gifts, food to-go, aloha wear, lotions, made-in-Hawaii crafts, etc. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I like both stores. This particular Whalers is at the Shops of Wailea. I was in search of a specific set of Island Essence lotions/oils that a friend requested. I knew Whaler's would have them, and indeed they did. However, the price went up substantially. I really had no choice but to buy them anyway since my friend wanted them and was paying for them. I will always visit a Whaler's General Store when presented the opportunity.

Another reason to make a stop at Fong Henry is for the hot dogs! Yep, they have hot dogs here and It is really good and so cheap too! I loved how it is cooked, hot, fresh, old fashion style. Condiments ( relish, peppers, mayo, ketchup, mustard) are provided. Owner request that you could use the relish/peppers first before the mustard, ketchup, mayo to avoid contaminations of spoons, keep it clean too when using the condiments. I like it better than the Costco hot dogs. I've never met Ken, from the reviews and thank you note on the wall but I always the see the same lady ( owner?) that helped me, she is friendly and she must wonder why I take so many pics of everything at the store. Great service! The hubby and I enjoyed our snack, hot dogs along with our seltzer! I can't wait to visit again and for more hot dogs! Stopped in to explore this little market on a Sunday and am pleasantly surprised. Staffed by…read morewonderful, friendly, and very helpful Aunties, Kelly's carries a nice variety of Asian staples at very reasonable prices. I even found baggies of freshly packed Kahuku Ogo. There's a hot food section in a separate area inside the market. Everything looked fresh and delicious, not like some places where the meat is swimming in fat. There's a selection of hot veggie forward dishes. So glad I found this gem of a market!

Started by selling candies and treats roadside in the 1920s, Nagasako General Store relocated to…read morethis plaza in 1965 and is in it's 4th generation of ownership. Over the course of over one-hundred years, the Nagasako family has built up a reputation for being generous and supportive of the community and going out of the way to help others. During the plantation era, they would visit camps, collect orders, and make deliveries; they allowed families to open charge accounts so that those who were struggling could feed their families during tough times; and they donated candy and fruit to the annual Christmas Parade for Santa to pass out. We were trying to eat at 808 grindz but were worried about timing so we went to Nagasako after I scouted inside and saw stuff we could eat for breakfast. I love their T-shirts and went back to buy one after leaving and already feeling like I would be missing out if I left without it. We ended up with a whole grab bag of food we ate out of the back of our SUV rental. Spam Musubis were great and there was a whole pile of them at 8 am. They had fried rice early as well and it came with a Filipino red hot dog that actually paired pretty well with the rice. Lumpias were not too salty and nice and crunchy, came with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. Kids did not like the BBQ pork bun but my wife and I devoured it.

I like the decor in this store because a lot of the advertising seemed to be here forever. There are a lot of advertisement for cigarettes that look like they are from the 60's. If you talk to the proprietress she can give you a brief history of Ulupalakua, Makawao and Pukalani. I mean there is not much to purchase in the store but it is like a museum that takes you back to when times were simpler. And, if you decide to drive up to Ulupalakua choose a nice day because the view as you drive up is phenomenal and well worth it.
