The reason we visit here is for their mochi. The mochi is some of the best I've ever had, and I have been to Japan to try theirs. The flavors are chocolate, peanut butter chocolate, and azuki bean (red bean). I'm not a peanut butter fan nor chocolate, so I just ate the red bean mochi. The mochi is so soft and the red bean filling is not too sweet and filled with a good amount of it. Since it is a family business, the hours are fluctuate constantly. Wow! This is such an amazing find to have their various flavor mochi! First thing first! Call to make your mochi reservation. You don't want to be disappointed and to show up only to find out they're all gone. Reserve, pick up, and enjoy! We got the dark chocolate truffle, red bean paste and peanut butter milk chocolate mochis. They were all delicious. The mochi skin was so smooth, so soft, and nicely chewy - just how a perfect mochi should be. And then fillings were complementary to the mochi skin - not too sweet, just right (so you know, when I drink milk tea, I usually go for 25% or if any milk tea with syrup, then 0%). Dark chocolate truffle had a very nice smooth dark chocolate truffle taste, and if you like dark chocolate, you'll love this. Peanut butter milk chocolate had a very nice texture with the chunky peanut chunks. It was deliciously chewy, crunchy and savory! And the traditional red bean paste, it was yummy. Only regret is that I didn't buy another set of all flavors to bring home to store in the freezer to have for the weeks to come. Thanks to the website and reviews that warn of mochi running out, I emailed to place my order a few days before we arrived on Maui for the weekend. True enough, when we showed up at just a little past noon on Saturday, the Dark Chocolate Truffle ones have sold out. A good amount of Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate ones were still available. I didn't order any so the kid got a 5-pc box to sample. I also picked up two Candy Cane Dark Chocolate gift bags as omiyage. The total damage was $147.44 including what I ordered via email: two 12-pc Dark Chocolate Truffles, two Rocky Road boxes, and four Kona Coffee Chocolates. We dug into the PBMC mochis right away. The mochi hype is accurate! Everything was just right: the softness, the chewiness, the sweetness. I didn't order the PBMC mochi because I don't like Reese's and I thought it'd be like that, but it's not! The PB is chunky which I like, I don't really taste the milk chocolate though, and that's ok. The PB is a little creamier and sweeter. I hope the chocolates are as good as the mochis! I also hope the mochis survive the flight back to O'ahu tomorrow night! The shop is located in Wakea Business Center. It's a simple set up but brightly lit. Everything is neatly displayed and clearly labeled. Lots of parking. Amex not accepted. Closed on Sundays. The mochis here are 100! They only have 3 flavors (they are a chocolate shop after all) - peanut butter with milk chocolate, chocolate truffle and azuki. I guess the red bean flavor is probably to appease everyone coming in asking for red bean mochi. My favorite of the 3 is the peanut butter. The chocolate is in there, but it's pretty subtle. It's a lot of peanut butter goodness. The other two flavors tie depending on if you're a chocolate person or not honestly. They will run out of mochis (from experience), so make sure to come early, or better yet, call to place an order the day before. Leave a message if no one picks up! You can also call on your way to the store for them to set aside some for you if still available. Worth it! Best eaten day of- super soft and pillowy. Absolutely delicious mochi here! The mochi are so soft and light! The chocolate peanut butter mochi is so tasty - I love that they use crunchy peanut butter for an extra texture pop. I would say a bit sweet for most Asian parents but not a problem for me. For those that find the chocolate PB too sweet, the azuki readbean mochi will probably be more just right! We loved everything we tried here and would stop by on our next visit! Who would have thought of all the things I miss about Maui, a chocolate shop made it to the top three of my list. It's a small specialty chocolate shop in the middle of a warehouse district. No frills and thrills, perfect representation of a family owned small business that works hard and deserves as much local and tourism support as possible. The chocolate is the perfect texture and flavor from white to milk to dark. I also love the options - it's so hard to find chocolate dipped red vines! Also, the different chocolates in different shapes were the perfect size and price to bring back home for friends and family (and myself). Highly encourage, along with the specialty chocolates to preorder mochi. It was only afternoon time when we came and half the items were sold out! Also, the mochis were great! The family that runs this shop really knows how to make great chocolate and make great conversations. Definitely spent more than I was supposed to and bought a lot for myself along with the gifts I preordered but it's for small business so it's worth it! Haven't been to Maui for over 30 years so when we planned this one day fly-in fly-out trip, the 2 places I wanted to go to was Maui Ocean Center and this place. My former co-worker used to always bring back their Peanut Butter & Milk Chocolate Mochi for me so this place was a must to visit. Since they close at 5pm, we called in our order early afternoon just in case but even then, they ran out of the Azuki mochi :-( When we picked up our order around 4pm, their mochi was sold out. Sooooo glad we called early but not early enough for the Azuki. I was so focused on only buying the mochi that now, looking at my pics of the inside, they had a lot of goodies but I didn't walk around to look at them...shucks! IF there is another time I visit Maui, I will definitely look at them! The workers are very nice and friendly and the store was clean and spacious! FYI: - Lots of parking - Found out they don't make too much of the Azuki Mochi so if you want it, you should order it in the morning. - The mochi does mold fast so if you're not planning to eat it the day you pick up, freeze it. Found out not too long ago...if you wrap the mochi with Saran Wrap, store it in a Ziploc freezer bag. When you're ready to eat, leave it out to defrost for maybe 15-20 minutes. This place has the softest mochi ever! I've had lot of mochi's in my days and even places in Oahu can't beat this place. My only gripe about this place is that mochi runs out so quickly and if you come a little late, all the mochi's are sold out. I was furniture shopping last week and was passing by so stopped in before 2pm on a weekday, all sold out. I'm not always planning ahead that I want mochi! However, I do try to make reservations so I can have my fix. I wish I can pop in anytime to pick up some mochi, but I have to remind myself I probably won't have any luck getting any if I go too late. Dropped them off and picked them up and she bought back 2 kind of mochi. Peanut butter and Azuki mochi. It was very fresh and soft. Contrary to what the name suggests, don't sleep on their fresh-made mochi! If you come later in the day they may sell out, so I'd highly recommend giving them a call either the day before or morning of. We got the red bean and peanut butter/milk chocolate mochis. The peanut butter/milk chocolate really surprised me because I was expecting it to be way too sweet, but it was a nice balance of the sweetness of the milk chocolate with the nuttiness of the PB. I think this might be my first yelp review outside of California! We were on a family vacation and naturally I looked up places where I could find a tasty treat suitable for a tourist lol. We've ventured out to this shop and as unassuming as it appeared on the outside, it surely blew my socks off! I appreciated the cute little touches of art like the mochi poster in front of the store that my kiddos could take a picture in front of. They also provided my children mochi stickers which I greatly appreciated. We arrived a few minutes before opening, and there were already shoppers inside, so if you want to ensure that you got your mochi, go ahead and show up maybe even 10 minutes before opening to ensure you get first dibs. We purchased the bean filled one, the chocolate truffle filled one, and the chocolate and peanut butter one. Out of the three, the chocolate truffle was my absolute favorite. The emoji was chewing and fresh, the chocolate rich And delicious. They managed to not make this excessively sweet, which I appreciated the peanut butter and chocolate one was also quite delicious but a little on the richer end and would be suitable for sharing. We also purchased a few chocolates for souvenirs so I was not able to try the chocolates they sold, but I am sure they are also quite delicious. Dark chocolate truffle mochi and peanut butter milk chocolate mochi to bring back to Oahu...yes, please! The Yelp and Instagram hype do not lie! Maui Specialty Chocolates is THE best dessert shop to visit on the island! "The best" also translates to "the most popular," so be ready to either call in to reserve your mochi boxes! During our first visit a bit past 1PM on a Thursday, the dark chocolate truffle mochi was already sold out, but a few peanut butter milk chocolate mochi boxes were still available. I didn't wanna lose a chance at dark chocolate, so I reserved a box of 8 six days in advance. The peanut better milk chocolate mochi was so good! It tasted like a higher quality, less sweet version of Reese's wrapped in white mochi. You get chopped peanuts with every bite...mmm! Fast forward to the following Wednesday. It was barely past 12 noon, barely two hours since opening, and ALL mochi was already sold out! I was so glad I reserved a box of the dark chocolate truffle mochi. I made sure to protect the mochi from direct sunlight, and chucked it in the freezer as recommended as soon as we returned home on Oahu. About an hour after freezing the mochi, I tried one, and it was still soft and fresh. If you love chocolate, I promise you will love this. They sell other chocolate covered treats too, but the mochi is the way to go. Opened in 1990 by husband and wife owners Valerie & Anthony Jones, Maui Specialty Chocolates offer mochi; chocolates; chocolate-dipped candies, cookies, cuttlefish, rice crispies, and nuts; and gift baskets. Both are born and raised on Maui, with Val, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. Val initially started giving chocolate gifts to family and friends, then selling them, and then introduced their signature mochi, which is what they're known for today. The mochi is filled with either generous amounts of chunky peanut butter, milk chocolate, dark chocolate truffle or azuki, with the peanut butter and milk chocolate being their most popular flavors. Made fresh daily, the mochi is so silky smooth, soft and chewy. The chocolate is very smooth and not overly sweet, and the peanut butter is of the right consistency of chopped peanuts and spread. As there are no preservatives, the mochi will last only 1-2 days, unless frozen in a Ziploc bag. Their mochi is much in demand that all flavors sell out quickly. It's best to call in your order one or two days before to guarantee you your flavors. All mochi is handmade elsewhere in a certified kitchen and brought to this retail store. Was so excited to make a stop here during our stay after hearing so much about the famous pb and milk chocolate mochi. We arrived at 10:30 on a Saturday and there was still plenty of selection but the options were going quickly. We tried both the pb and dark chocolate truffle. The texture of the mochi was so fresh and soft, up there with fresh ones I've had in Japan before and the filling was so creamy and flavorful. Ever since my friend in college brought me mochi home from Maui Specialty Chocolates, I have been HOOKED. Anytime we go Maui or someone is coming from Maui and they ask, we're getting that Dark Chocolate Truffle mochi!! My family and friends love the Peanut Butter as well, but for me it's that Chocolate mochi! I haven't found anything like it on any of the other islands yet. The family that runs this is SO sweet and friendly. We love stopping here and picking up "the goods". I hear they also make chocolates, but seriously if you don't get that mochi, you are missing out! OMG just had one half of the peanut butter chocolate mochi and their dark chocolate truffle mochi and both were incredible. The 5-piece box was around $8 and $10 respectively. I ordered a day in advance as they suggest on their webpage and yep they had ran out of the ones I planned to get when I arrived at 2pm. So I strongly urge you to pre-order! The peanut butter milk chocolate was sweet and salty with crunchy bits of peanuts inside. And the dark chocolate was super rich and decadent. The mochi part was extremely soft and super fresh. I've popped my two boxes in the freezer as they recommend also on the web and will take them to San Francisco on the plane tomorrow. I wondered if they would taste as good as "deer poop" or "shika no fun" which is chocolate mochi you can get prepackaged in Nara, Japan. And it was way better! Came based on the rec of a friend and by researching on yelp. My friend brought me home some mochi from their trip to Maui so I decided to come for myself. It was even better in person. Nothing like a mochi that is fresh made that day! It was amazing! The freshest mochi I've ever eaten. Far better even than the freshly made mochi from SF and Sacramento. We tried the red bean and dark chocolate mochi. The red bean was our ultimate favorite! The consistency of the red bean was that of refried beans :) and it just melted in your mouth. Best red bean mochi I've ever had in my life! So good we had to come back the day of our departure to get more. Chocolate was also very good. The size of the mochi are actually a bit bigger than that of typical mochi. $8 for 5 red bean; $10 for 5 chocolate. Make sure to call the day before to order what u want bc they WILL run out. We forgot on the day of our departure but fortunately we called as soon as they opened that day and they were nice enough to reserve for us. They take credit card which is a plus!
