I had been to the 49th Parallel location on Main Street a few times before, but have always wanted to check out the pretty patio in their West 4th Ave location. There was an incredibly long lineup when we arrived, which sadly made getting 2 cappuccinos and a single donut take about 25 minutes. I'm one to usually go for a mocha if I'm not getting black coffee, so I can't compare their cappuccino to others in the city, but it was amazing nonetheless. The perfect balance of coffee and milk. Coincidentally, I had a cappuccino the day before at Rocanini Coffee Roasters in Steveston, and it was as if I was just drinking milk. 49th Parallel is definitely the winner out of the two! Of course with my sweet tooth I couldn't resist ordering a cinnamon sugar donut too. We both agree that it had a cake-like texture and was the perfect accompaniment to our drinks. Got the Matcha bismarck and the Stout piggy pudding(?). the last one was on feature so isn't normally there...but it basically has irish baileys cream on top and uses guinea dough. I must have misheard because I can't google anything on Guinea dough, but I assume that this is why the donut name is related to pigs?? If you want a relaxing place to do some work, this might not be your spot. There is always a LOT of traffic here. BUT no matter how busy they are, the staff are always pleasant, quick and hard working. My flat white is delicious every time! They have an amazing selection of doughnuts from Lucky's that are always fresh and rotating seasonal flavours. Treat yourself to one of these and you're bound to have a great day. Some free parking around (2 hour) but there is a lot directly next to the shop. Watch out, the attendees of the lot will fine you even if you're a second late. Both were fantastic (and I finally got a pretty drink in one of those amazing blue mugs). He had the pb&j donut which literally tasted exactly like a pb&j and was super delicious. I went out of my comfort zone to try something new with the peach donut with basil meringue. It was lovely! I am not really a big coffee drinkers, so this review is actually more geared towards their in-house doughnut brand, Lucky's Doughnuts! Simply put, Lucky's are my FAVOURITE doughnuts in Vancouver. They are pillowy clouds of doughy goodness and come in brilliant flavours and amazing toppings like freshly toasted meringue! If I had to pick one doughnut to eat for the rest of my life it would be the PB & J doughnut. The square doughnut - such a fun shape! - is filled with a housemade jelly that is fresh berry jelly that is tangy. I love tart tangy flavours so I love it. The doughnut is then given a sweet savoury peanut butter glaze and a sprinkling of chopped toasted peanuts that give it a lovely texture. To truly enjoy this bougie doughnut, you need to have it at their cafe with a warm latte in hand and if you are super extra like me, you will eat it with a knife and fork in order to prevent your fingers from getting sticky. hahaha read more

They also have a doughnut vendor and I took a bite of my friends doughnuts and those were also phenomenal, the blueberry one especially. Jokes aside, Parallel is pretty tight. Their donuts are pretty decent as well (from what I remember from my pre gluten-free/dairy-free days. The boy comes here periodically for a coffee or too. Their blue cups can be spotted in cafes and restaurants all over that brew 49th. Their festive donuts are quite appealing, in the decorative sense. It is winter in Vancouver, this place opens at 7 am they have taken out all indoor seating and provide outdoor seating but only Turn the heating on for 8 am. When you ask politely to enjoy your coffee in warmth they say they are unable to adjust the timers earlier. If you want an ok coffee in the cold on a Sunday morning then this is your spot read more

This is still one of my fave. coffee shops in Vancouver, if not my new fave. coffee "chain". Love the outdoor seating and windows that open so you can still sit inside but enjoy the fresh air on a nice day. The lines are long but move fast. Of course, they still offer the Lucky's doughnuts, but I come for the coffee. The baristas are nice and accommodating. What a welcome reprieve from the old Kits coffee; I was never a fan of the former, which makes this place even more appealing. It's still better than Cielo in SM which now serves our 49th Parallel, too. Apparently it's also sold in "Billyburg" Brooklyn, so I'm almost tempted to seek it out on my next trip to NY. Bonus that they now offer a new low-acid coffee which is great for those who have a low tolerance but still need a fix; too bad they don't have it freshly brewed. It'll be a full five once they offer low-acid + decaf. Sounds almost blasphemous, but it would still give me my "fix". And of course, who can resist the lovely atlantic blue trademark cups! If only they could offer a "rewards" program here and I would make it one of my daily stops! Perhaps it's best that they don't. read more

-Overly-Astringent Brews at Parallel 49- The drip and espresso coffee are very consistent. Unfortunately, they are consistently sour, astringent (dry, puckering mouth feel) and bitter. I drink my coffee black, and these flavours are unpleasant. However, if cream is added an attempt to lessen the astringency of the brew, the results are like you're consuming soured expired rancid milk. As other reviewers have mentioned, it appears that Parallel 49 is no longer a coffee-focused retail business, but instead a purveyor of overpriced decorated fried, sugary dough. When in the neighbourhood, I much prefer the quality and variety of treats available across the street at Whole Foods. If I really craved a donut, I'd seek out Cartems. The seating is uncomfortable, and I found the garish faux-hipster décor an eye-sore. The service was pleasant, the sole redeeming quality. Not recommended. read more

The atmosphere is great, the brewed coffee was...unanimously...the worst any one of our party of three had ever had the misfortune to imbibe. Seriously sour. The donuts were good, not the life changing experience we'd been led to believe it would be, but better than a stale Tim Horton's (don't ask me to compare to a fresh Tim Horton's, because you won't like my response). As i'm just up the way from the Main Street 49th, it took me a second to recognize this place. Being so used to the dark brick & brooding Mount Pleasant location, the neon sign and metal patio here had me confused enough that I walked past it at first, wondering if perhaps my maps app had gone haywire. What a difference! This is like the Katy Perry of 49th Parallel spots. It's totally cutesy, while being completely aware of its being totally cutesy. Down to its distressed shabby chic furniture and robin eggs blue... everything. It's bubbly in a "we know what we're doing" sort of way. I don't hate it. The coffee as always, is great. They have more doughnut selection then Main St (or more specifically, don't sell out as quickly), so I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to jedi mind trick the line up from taking the last pistachio old fashioned. In fact - there wasn't a line up! So that too, is new terrain for my 49th experience. Bonus points - the barista mock opera sang out my drink when it was up. For no reason whatsoever. It was awkwardly charming and to him, I tip the hat... because spontaneous singing in largely public places should always be awarded with a shout out. It's 49th Parallel. I cam here recently on my short coffee tour of Vancouver. I really wanted to try a local roaster and saw lots of positive reviews of 49th Parallel, so we made a stop there in the morning. I thought I ordered pour over, but they just poured our coffee out of a carafe. It was very good coffee, but it wasn't as clean and crisp as a pour over normally is. The cup was enjoyable, but not overly memorable compared to other cups I had (from Revolver and Matchstick). It would have been nice if there was a token vegan donut as well, but that seem like asking for too much. The atmosphere was also a weird, staid mix of yoga moms and kids and a few design types, but that reflect the neighborhood. If somebody in the area suggested we meet there, I totally would. I just won't go out of my way to go back. It's a solid coffee shop, but not worth writing home about compared to others. read more

I think I had higher hopes for this coffee spot. On our most recent trip, we decided to make it our mission to find good coffee shops. Being in Vancouver on a rainy day, we decided it was a good day to seek out a hipster coffee shop. After seeing the reviews of 49th parallel coffee, we thought it was worth trying. We paid for some street parking nearby and went up to the shop. It was pretty happening place, especially for a Tuesday. Yes, they had a lot of donuts, but I was saving myself for the donut shop in Granville Island. And then I tried their coffee. And i was not impressed. I couldn't taste the flavor notes, and I really just couldn't taste much boldness to it. It was alright....but nothing to go crazy over. I diluted that coffee with some milk. For those who had read my yelp reviews on coffee places- that's a sign that I was not a big fan of their coffee. If you're not that into tasting the coffee, then sure, I think this would be a place for you. It's definitely a cute shop if you wanted to do work or have a meeting. But if you're a coffee snob, probably not the place for you. read more

My maiden visit to 49th Parallel Coffee was NOT accompanied by hordes of people, as we arrived early on Saturday morning. "Early" in this case means 10am and frankly, I was happy to enjoy this charming place in relative peace. My husband and I agreed that our respective coffee and cappuccino, while very good, were a tad bitter. Perhaps I am spoiled by Elysian Coffee, as I have never had a bitter coffee or cappuccino there, but I was a wee bit disappointed with my less-than-perfect drink, as I had heard and read so many rave reviews of this place. However, the doughnuts that we enjoyed with our drinks were divine. We shared a maple glazed doughnut and a pistachio croissant-like confection and both made us wish we bought a few more. The free wifi here did not work at all. Overall, a nice place for enjoying a few treats and people watching. read more

100th review! Anyway we came here after brunch and ordered the pistachio & orange donut and the very chocolatey one (don't remember the name), as well as a latte. The donuts were very good, the pistachio & orange didn't really taste like orange, but it was still tasty. The chocolate one was very dark chocolate, which is great cause it wasn't too sweet. I love their latte art, even if I don't really drink coffee. My favourite part was sitting in the covered outside area, it felt incredibly spacious and well lit, which was relaxing. I love a great cup of coffee. With this said, there are a lot good coffee shops in the lower mainland, but not many fit the title of great in my mind. However, 49th Parallel Coffee serves a great cup of coffee and should be visited if you are a coffee lover. When you first walk into the shop you'll be greeted by the great aroma of the coffee and wafts of sugary goodness from the Lucky's Donuts that are part of the shop. The motif could be best described as heritage-rustic as presented by white painted rod iron, wooden tables, and baby blue cups of coffee served on wooden boards (when ordered to stay in). The cashiers at 49th Parallel on 4th Ave have always been upbeat and able to move the line quickly. However, and more importantly, the baristas have the knowledge and know-how to pour a great latte, cappuccino, etc. Although a good cup of coffee take some skill to pour when espresso based, it really comes down to the beans and roast. However, it doesn't matter if you're getting an espresso based drink or a drip coffee, almost every roast is flavourful and not burnt tasting. The cost of a standard drip coffee will cost you approximately $2 while an espresso based beverage will cost you up approximately $4.50 depending on how "fancy" it is. So, the costs are about average for a cup of coffee, but the taste definitely makes it work while. In addition to the coffee, a Lucky's Doughnuts shop is incorporated into the store. I have gone to the the Lucky's Donuts on Main Street and wasn't too impressed. However, the Lucky's Donuts on 4th Ave is significantly better and addresses many of the issues I had with the Main Street location. At 4th Ave location, the doughnuts are bigger and have a larger variety of flavours that are almost always available such as root beer, peanut butter and jam, maple and bacon apple fritter, pistachio old fashioned and many more (which also included classic doughnut types). Additionally, the prices of the donuts are cheaper than when they were first introduced at Main Street. The most expensive doughnut is about $3.50, which is pricey for a doughnut, but with the size, quality and specialty flavours of the doughnuts, it's comparable to getting a piece of cake or other baked good from a bakery. With a charming setting, large patio, fantastic coffee, good selection of donuts and cookies to satisfy a sweet tooth, and not being as crowded with people as the Main Street location, the 29th Parallel Coffee shop on 4th is not to be idly passed by. read more
