Okay, this certainly wasn't one of the fanciest cafes that I have been to, but honestly, the problem I found with Central London is that many of the cafes weren't open, so that ended up really being my only option. I certainly appreciated it for that. They did actually do a decent coffee, which I ended up sitting at the table over the road from the place. Mind you, I probably shouldn't be all that surprised that many of them don't open until later because, well, it turns out that they are pretty close to the city. read more

My husband and I LOVED this place. We had breakfast two days in a row. I would love to try their pastas. I noticed other reviewers complained about the small seating area. It is true, but my hubby and I found a spot both days. If we were ever in the area again, I would probably get the dinner and take it back to our room where we could enjoy it with a bottle of wine. Can't speak to their pastas, though. Breakfast was perfect, and service was good. Close to many hotels, too. read more

If you're not here for breakfast, you need to be aware of one thing: this is a pasta restaurant (for hot food) or a sandwich shop (for cold food), so you need to dig past all the breakfast reviews. I stopped off here for dinner. The prices are very reasonable and service is good. It's cafeteria-style, meaning you order at the front, then they bring you your food when it's ready. They asked me if I wanted the pasta menu (hinting that that's what smart patrons do), so I ordered the Carbonara. As with some of the other reviews, I found the pasta very good (fresh, al dente), however the protein was overly salted. BUT, for its price point, I frankly expected much worse. Yum! This place is miiiiles better than the other chain-like cafes in this area. I have been past a few times when there was a queue coming out into the street...so I had a feeling it'd be nice. I chose a massive ciabatta roll, stuffed with mozzarella, perfectly ripe avocado and sun dried tomatoes. There was so much filling, that it was pretty difficult to get my mouth around it (that's what she said??). The generous filling also meant I was a hugely messy eater as avocado kept sliding out! This was recommended to me by someone who works down the road and comes here regularly, and I can totally see why she does. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and served up some delicious lasagna with a side of veg - lovely broccoli. I think you can mix sides as well and it's really nice to get some proper vegetables with lunch. Good value and they snuck in a bonus banana as well! A modest but fully serviceable cafe. Most of the menu is sandwiches. I have not had their breakfasts - and cafes live and die on their breakfast. So this review is necessarily partial. Daily specials are particularly noteworthy. I have had a first rate (and huge) plate of roast pork with excellent vegs and sides for practically nothing. Small restaurant with big flavors. My friend and I chose 49 Cafe as our first breakfast spot in London after arriving here and we weren't disappointed! Their breakfast and lunch menu had so many mouth watering food to choose from but we ultimately went with the breakfast menu. I got the 49 Full English breakfast (£5.50) and it came with perfectly cooked sausage, a heaping amount of beans, sunny side up eggs, yummy mushrooms, and some bacon to finish it. Everything about the dish was amazing. Eggs were phenomenal and mushrooms tasted fresh and well done. The only bad thing I have to say about this restaurant is that it's so tiny you can barely squeeze 2 people next to each other. There's not that many seating either so you'll have to wait a while if it's a busy day. We sat really close to another table to where our elbows are really close to touching. I'd definitely go back here to try out the rest of the menu! There's also a nice little coffee stand nearby with really inexpensive coffee (~£1.50) and hot chocolate (~£1) so give that place a go too! read more

Glad I found this tiny cafe! Note: it's small! We didn't think we would be able to snag a table but there's one hidden close to the back so we were set up for a nice late breakfast. Coffee was great, tea was fine and the food was great. I think the husband had a traditional but I had the healthy breakfast of yogurt, fruit, and granola. It was nice, plus extra pastries ;) Service was attentive and nice, and it looked like around lunch a lot of people were ordering takeaway which is a great idea for the parks nearby. read more

This was a nice find. We stumbled upon 49 Cafe a couple of weeks ago while visiting London. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We felt at home right away. I had the honey, lemon, ginger tea, which was very basic, yet really delicious! I also had the fruit, yogurt, granola dish and was very pleased. My son had the crepes and loved them. This is a great example of a simple little cafe that just works! Been here a few times and enjoyed the food every time! Over lunch time during the week, the queue will be out the door but it moves pretty quickly! The staff get things going and are ready to help as soon as you step through the entrance. There is a wide variety of sandwiches/baguettes/bagels and the like with various fillings (I've only had the various chicken fillings-of which there are many) and lots of salad/pasta options. They have a little notice board at the entrance with some of the specials which are very popular! Once ordered something savoury, you can try some of their sweets like great muffins, very rich, chocolate covered short bread and other little pastries. It's a pound more to eat in and there is only about 5/6 tables inside so you might be out of luck but on the flip side there is a nice little garden walkway opposite with benches and if it's a nice sunny day, you can soak up the rays whilst enjoying your lunch. read more

I'm vegan so there aren't many options for me, but if you're vegetarian then you have plenty of options. Also, you can build your own sandwich/meal so I made mine vegan. I ordered a ciabatta roll with rocket a.k.a "arugula", grilled zucchini, sauteed onions, and hummus. It was delish and they should actually add it to their menu and name it after some random tourist who came in with his son "myself" The Davis lol. If you're interested in it, make sure they grill it. I also ordered a soy latte, which was also good. 49 Cafe is a hidden gem, so if you're in the area, be sure to try it out. read more

Super smiley and friendly service, mix of generously portioned and nicely priced pastries (variety of croissants, muffins, cookies but also cannoli, pastel de nata, and other moreish and moorish goodies) During the time I spent reading over a zesty orange-coconut muffin the ladies were totally accommodating to all the customers' requests. Seems they'll pretty much make whatever you want with whatever they have - fresh breads, sliced or cured meats, fresh and grilled veggies, avocado, cheese. Mixed salads, jacket potatoes, pasta, eggs. This place is my favorite cafe for getting breakfast, they are fast efficient and the food is everything you could want in a British cafe - there is butter and it is delicious. I worked in Bloomsbury for nearly 5 years and I came back here again and again. I only discovered this little gem after trying out a (considerable) number of other lunchtime venues in the area, thank goodness I did! There is nearly always a queue out of the door here which should give you an indication as to how good it is (or how small but more on that later!). The cafe does a range of sandwiches made on the premises with thick cut focaccia or ciabatta with pretty much anything you like in them and they are DELICIOUS! They also do salads with again, pretty much anything you can think of, roasted vegetables, pasta, greek salad etc etc. They do a range of hot food too such as pasta carbonara and lasagne. They also do a selection of pastries including the famous Italian Cannoncini and Cannoli's. (See Sopranaos for reference!) The food tastes as good as anything and the portion sizes are huge! The staff are friendly and smiley, if a little abrupt (but they do work at top speed!). The cafe itself is absolutely tiny, I mean ridiculously so, so it can feel very hectic and no one is entirely sure where the queues begin and end. If you order a sandwich they send you to the front to pay so it feels like you are skipping ahead of the others waiting for salad but it all works somehow! Bloomsbury isnt cheap. I'll lay it on the line, you would be hard pushed to find somewhere (other than Tesco's) that offers a cheap lunch and this isn't any different, but, its part and parcel of Central London working. If you want more for your money then I can totally say you will get that here. Everything is around £5-7 per thing (salad, sandwich etc) but you do get a free banana!! Fantastic café, I love the tuna melt from here, really creamy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Some can be small and soggy, but this is freshly made, grilled to perfection and more importantly made quickly - so no having to wait around and huge queues when you need to appease your lunchtime need. The size of the sandwiches very filling, and I also find the price to be very reasonable. I'd love to try some other options and be able to report back on those, but it's a long walk from the office and I usually only make it when I have a craving for this. People usually seem happy here, and it's always bustling which is a good sign. I also like the atmosphere of the place. The staff are always approachable, you can tell the people here work hard and know what they're doing. read more

What a great find during my visit to London. Liked it so much it was our daily breakfast spot where we dined on the full English breakfast and a splendid Flat White each morning. We found the 49 Cafe on the first morning of a week long stay in Kings Cross-and had breakfast there every day of our stay. Their pastries were excellent but the rest of the menu was outstanding. The Breakfast of Champions (scrambled eggs on a soft cheese covered slice of thick, whole grain bread with avocado and veggie) was awesome but the full English breakfast will satisfy your American breakfast needs-no potatoes though. My wife had either the Healthy Breakfast (yogurt, fruit, granola) or the Champions. Our last morning we both had the French Toast, light for that kind of dish. It would have been perfect had there been an option to add a sausage and a couple of eggs but I didn't see one and neglected to ask. We didn't have the Eggs Benedict but that was our choice. They also offer fresh pasta dishes. read more

Lunch review. I stopped here for the reviews and great rating. Unfortunately it must be breakfast they excel at. Friendly and attentive staff service a very small tabled indoor area. Taking food to go here is most likely primary business. Very fast and attentive service, but sadly the food was mediocre. Club sandwich featuring focaccia bread that, although tasting good, was flat and lacked the spring focaccia bread boasts. The chicken was way too salted as well. My companion ordered pasta which was a bit bland, and unfortunately over cooked so the dish was a bit mushy. This is sad considering that this restaurant is certainly Italian owned. So my suggestion would be to stick with breakfast, or opt for one of their several interesting salad options for lunch. read more

Mixed feelings with this one. In a nutshell Pros: - nice range of omelettes, e.g. salmon and eggs, neatly garnished with salad, chives and cherry tomatoes. Seasoned with olive oil. Interesting combinations with avocado available, too. Also, French toast and other treats. - really good bread, bordered with a crunchy crust, as it should be. - Intense tea, not bitter, with fresh milk. - Good and fast service (but then again, I was there very early in the morning). - Great value - Free WiFi Sounds good and appealing. But.... lo, the cons: - the omelette and salmon bread looked good but was bland. No spices, no spread on the base. The salad carried no marinade and the olive oil lacked aroma. I am sure there is better olive oil that can be used. - Little space: Tables and chairs were rather small and seemed crammed together. Also, some were placed in badly lit corners, which does not confer at all the crucial atmosphere you need as support in the morning to actually wake up. - Deserts were greasy and lacked the flavour of "yum!". If the cons could be worked on, like spicing up the omelettes a bit, I see no reason why not to go again. read more
