If you want anything soybean-related, come here. Their highlights are the tofu pudding and soy milk using the soybeans they grind fresh every day. I've also had their turnip cake which is equally as delicious--it makes a perfect breakfast to quickly steam or pan fry at home. They also have a selection of joong which I haven't tried yet. Stopped by here as I was drawn in by the homemade goods. I decided on a soy milk and lotus wrapped rice. The soy milk was a bit on the sweeter side but nicely chilled and bottled which was convenient. The lotus wrapped rice was a small portion (but also cheap price of $1 so I'm not complaining) with rice and mushrooms (the cashier did mention that there was no meat but I think the mushrooms were a good substitute). I think I'll definitely stop by and try some of their other goods like the fish skin chips and cakes! read more

This used to be Fong Inn, which was my go to for ho fun, dried shrimp rice rolls, fresh tofu, and bean sprouts. I'm glad to see there's still a place in Chinatown selling similar items. I only tried the ho fun this time, but they were nice and fresh. My only complaint is that they only sell these in two, so it's a lot of noodles if it's just you for dinner. Yes, we should all support this shop and its staff, because they and their manager, Patrick Mock, are fighting for the survival of the Chinatown community, have been providing free meals to those in need, even while they struggle to continue. But also - go for the food - it is really good! I only recently started going to the shop, brought in by the thoughtful handwritten sign on the front window, about the effect of kindness and thanking people for not forgetting about the small businesses. That first visit I bought some fresh rice noodles and veggie sticky rice in banana leaves (zongzi). I hadn't had zongzi in many years since i stopped eating red meat and pork and they're usually filled with meat. The veggie ones have mushrooms and are very tasty! They're smaller than the traditional pork filled ones but are 4 for $3.50. Since then I always stop in when I am in Chinatown and get the veggie zongzi and rice noodles, and have also tried the frozen shrimp dumplings (ha gow); tofu pudding - which is so fresh, smooth and silky, I like to add a little maple syrup in addition to the molasses syrup it comes with; and chicken bao. The chicken bao are huge, steamed bread buns filled with a mixture of chicken, chicken sausage, and half hard boiled egg. Just tried one and yum! Good amount of filling, very tasty. They come in a package of four in their refrigerated section - I think around $7 - they are huge, well worth it. Even though it will take me a while to go through them (and all the other food I bought in Chinatown this trip), the nice woman who helped me said they can be frozen, so I may stock up :o). I walked past this place a thousand times before I noticed the little worn down little Zagat sign and decide if to go in. Thankful I did! This place specializes in desserts noodles and baked goods. The cashier was extremely helpful and recommended a specific type of noodles I was on the hunt for after I told her I was trying to make mushroom ho fun. The portion, she said, was big enough for two maybe three. But I'll tell ya, for 2 bucks the noodles they gave me could probably easily feed 3-4. It's a great deal. What a staple in Chinatown! Recently just went back to get their turnip cake and Malay sponge cake (steamed) and as always it was exactly what I needed. First off let me say that I knew it was not the original owners. Whatever controversy regarding their name and the fact they opened a soy bean place in the same place doesn't really bother me. I wanted to try them simply because there is a lack of quality tofu pudding in Chinatown and they never presented themselves as original owners. And if it was the original owners- I probably would have not have shopped there since the quality went way downhill in the few years before they retired and closed shop. So now back to this new store. I asked to sample a few things since I wanted to see the quality and the price. I got a large soy bean pudding (Dow foo fah), brown sugar cake (wong tong go) and a small soy bean milk (Dow jeung). Honestly- this is prob the best I've had in a while especially the pudding. It was smooth, silken and the syrup that came with it is the authentic ginger syrup instead of the generic sugar syrup. The cake is right amount of sourness and the soy bean milk was refreshing and not too sweet. The owners were friendly. The only con is that they are more expensive than other shops- my large pudding cost 5 dollars. However if you appreciate good quality and authentic food,I'd rather pay a little more and like what I get. Even my elderly inlaws agreed with me that the quality of the goods I bought over to their house was tasty and flavorful. So regardless of whatever press they are getting for their name- I went in there not cuz it was based on the old owners reputation. Classic hole in the wall Chinatown joint. No frills no thrills. They sell house made radish cake, taro cake, herbal jelly, and classic Chinese sweet desserts, zong zi, duo hua, and fresh soy milk. So much more affordable than buying them al la carte at the dim sum restaurants. A lot of the reviews complain about not having specific items but it's Chinatown. That means you need to get there early! Get your butt here early-like the morning or early afternoon or else they run out and there's none left. If you don't read Chinese that's okay because they have English translations right next to the items. I didn't expect I could find the White Suger Cake in NY. This is a very traditional Chinese dessert and it usually served in the Dim Sum spots in China. I used to come here when it was under the old name so this review is for my experience under the new owner. I love a great tofu fa and it's always such a hassle to find a great place. A place I can come back to over and over. I recently tried their tofu fa and it was so good! I've had a lot of tofu fa in my life and they all taste about the same. But when I took my first bite of the tofu fa here with the ginger syrup, I was pretty amazed at how good it was. I'm not sure if it was the syrup or a combination of the syrup with the tofu fa. All I know is, it was delicious and I will definitely come back when I am in the area. Something to know is that the quart here is $5 so it is a bit steeper in price compared to other places. The small herbal jelly is $2.50 each and that was another winner. They don't make them in big containers. I wonder why? I also got the herbal drink - ha gu cho and that tasted a bit different than I expected. It wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be so this is perfect for someone that doesn't like it too sweet. It's more herbal like. A big bottle goes for $4.50. I also got a big container of the soy milk and that was really good too. It is $4.50. This place takes credit card so that is another plus. I am really happy this place is still up and running despite Chinatown going through a rough time. Easily overlooked store on Mott Street with amazing quality foods. Soy products are great (soy milk, sweet tofu). But for me the baked roast pork buns are the best! I have had many from other places, often the dough is too sweet or they don't put enough pork. The ones here are smaller but the ratio of meat to pastry is perfect. Great for parties. However, the cake is best made when the master is around. This rings true for the yellow sugar cake as well. While he is in China, there has been no malai cake, and the yellow sugar cake is not as good. I also enjoy the way the new owners make their sweetened soy milk. It is just the right amount of sweet. Whatever drama that went on with 46 Bakery and Fong Inn is irrelevant now. I'm a younger generation of Chinese and I really enjoyed the food at 46 Bakery. The Wong Tong cakes are delicious and unique compared to other desserts around the area. This bakery is not the most aesthetic or most modern bakery in the area but it is one of the only remaining authentic Chinese bakery we have here. I've tried their wong tong cakes twice and both times, it did NOT disappoint! The workers are friendly and always smiling. People that are complaining about the Fong Inn drama needs to get with the times. The fact is Fong Inn decided to move away despite it being around for so long. 46 is here to stay and so far they are doing a great job! It's not easy having to live up to the standards of Fong Inn since Fong Inn has been established for so many years. Despite all the drama and controversies, 46 is doing a great job as a new bakery and I really see them only getting better. read more

I get the mushroom and tofu zongzi here and they're so good. I can never find savory vegetarian zongzi anywhere and the ones here are so rich and flavorful -- they taste just as good as meat zongzi. They're filled with thinly sliced shiitake mushroom and spongey tofu that tastes like mock meat (which makes it even better), all wrapped up in a lotus leaf. Highly recommend! read more
