There's no better way to explore Chinatown than to simply wander around. I was craving a zongzi, but it was difficult to find online. As luck had it, and just when I was about to lose hope, I stumbled on this shop. I poked my head in and found, to my delight, the treat I was looking for. As soon as I came in, I had a good feeling about the place. The shop owner kept the zongzi in a steamer, so it came to me piping hot. The lotus leaves were fragrant. The rice was hot and sticky. The pork was delicious and so was the salted egg. The peanuts added a nice, nutty texture to it all. I'm so glad I found this place. Navigating the tight space can be a challenge and always makes me feel more rushed when all I want to do is slowly savor and peruse their goods. A Super hole in the wall! It looks nondescript with single item menu papers hanging around. They're known for their soy bean milk, lotus wrapped rice balls and mochi like desserts. Also! They sell bags of frozen dumplings if you want to stock up on some yummy dumplings at home. Whenever I go to dim sum, my favorite thing is lo mai gai so when I saw the variety of lotus wrapped rice here naturally I had to try. I ordered the vegan one mushroom/tofu and the pork peanut combo. Both are super sticky and flavorful. I just wish the mushroom one was bigger! It's a tiny drop but with a ton of mushrooms. So if you're going for that one, get a few:) so delicious! I also tried some desserts. The herbal black sesame mochi in a shape of a flower and little dumplings filled with custard. Both were just okay. The soy milk was pretty good though but next time I'll try the herbal tea. Love that they have the non sweetened options. Overall very tasty! We have since been back numerous times for noodles, frozen goods, fresh soy milk, and pastries! Everything is fresh and well-flavored. We got the wintermelon pastries yesterday and were worried about it being too sweet, but it was just right! Prices are also very reasonable (we purchased the wintermelon pastries, which come with 3 small pastries, a pack of rice noodles, and a soy milk all for $8). It's been so long since my last visit. I hadn't been since the 2020s, when I worked downtown, pre-pandemic, so I was thrilled to see #46 Mott not only open, but thriving! The zongzi circa 2024 were exactly the same as they were circa 2020: restrained, made with excellent rice and filled in our case with peanuts and a bit of pork ($3.75). It was delicious, but not decadent -- true to this shop's form. We found the lotus leaf wrapped rice ($3) to be even more fantastic, the rice looser than in the zongzi and imbued through with the fragrance of lotus leaf, all generously stuffed with your choice of fillings. (The vegetarian mushroom was truly excellent, the pork very good.) My favorite, though, may have been the soy sauce / tea eggs, which were thoroughly marinated and deliciously briny. It took some self restraint to not order the dou hua (silken tofu custard), which we like to take home and dress with savory toppings like soy sauce and toasted sesame oil, chives and cilantro -- a perfect warm weather dish -- or the soy milk. We've really enjoyed #46's versions of these in the past! But sadly, I was already laden down from shopping and couldn't handle any more weight. They accept credit cards without a surcharge IIRC. The young woman working at the counter was courteous and conversed perfectly in English, Mandarin and several other Chinese dialects by the sound of it. There's no seating in this tiny, narrow takeout only operation -- but a high concentration of good eats! I love. My friend first told me about 46 because I wanted to find a spot that sells frozen sticky rice to take home. I am now a fan of their mushroom sticky rice and have 20 of them in my freezer! The regular pork ones are good too. Through Yelp I found out that their specialty was the tofu pudding, so I had to try it and I love it! I usually come here for their mung bean or peanut zongzi but have noticed that they've gotten a bit more expensive compared to other locations that sell zongzi. Their zongzi is also quite small in size though they are yummy! I've also noticed that this location has recently become quite popular with tourists which could explain the price hikes. The place is also cash only. The past weekend, I came here again to try their traditional chinese rice pudding cups (boot jai goh) since I saw that they had matcha ones! One would say I'm loyal to 46 ... and I am for good reason. Tofu Pudding - fresh, soft, silky, and delicious hot or cold. I can eat this anytime of the year in any weather. Soy Milk - if I'm going to be out and about, this is my on-the-go drink if I can't pick up the tofu pudding. They have both sweet and unsweetened options. Herbal Grass Jelly / Herbal Tea - similar to the tofu pudding and soy milk, very fresh and delicious. Sometimes I do prefer this since the herbal flavors are quite refreshing. They also offer a wide variety of items to pick up from the counter that I loved including, but not limited to, Bozai Cake, Brown/White Sugar Cake, fresh rice noodles, etc. Open up the freezer chest and you'll find a variety of frozen goodies like dumplings and siu mais. In the mood for something hot? Try their Zong Zi or Lo Mai Gai. If you can't tell by now, but I frequent 46, and you should too. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while after hearing about their tofu pudding. While I was passing by, I saw that they were going to raise their prices in December, so I thought it was as good as a time as any to try it. I got a large tofu pudding as well as an herbal jelly. I wish they had more sugar syrup options than a plain brown sugar as I prefer ginger syrup with my tofu pudding. Despite that, the tofu pudding was amazing. So soft and smooth. The tofu was silky and hit the spot. It comes warm because they leave it in a rice cooker and scoop it out from there. There is a little too much condensation and liquid that comes with it, but you can always pour it out at home. The herbal pudding was great too. It was a classic herbal pudding, and it wasn't more than $5 for each of the portions. Even if they raise the prices, I can't imagine that the prices would be exaggerated. read more

Feels like my sister came on an off day for them. She was in the city and was craving for something sweet so she came to get a large quart of tofu pudding to bring home to share. Generally speaking, my family enjoys eating tofu pudding so we were excited to try theirs. In addition to this, she also got some soymilk to try. First the Tofu pudding just didn't seem fresh- from the looks of opening the container, I did not feel excited to have some because the tofu pudding itself did not look silky as we are used to seeing it and it was more lumpy. We scooped out half a cup each for everyone first. Their ginger syrup was great but it certainly does not make up for the tofu pudding that was not soft and just not great in general. Also, for $5 a quart, we expected something more but it was pretty disappointing overall. I've scrolled through pictures and did see that on other days, their tofu pudding does look silky and fresh but I guess their quality is a tad inconsistent? The soymilk, which I did not try, I heard was decent so at least that was great.
