Solid 3.5 stars. We brought a 6-pack (there is a liquor store directly across the street on Union Ave) and dined here last night, which was when we we realized by the high volume of people coming in and out that this is more of a take-out joint...but no big deal. As you walk in the door, that enticing aroma is gonna hit you. I like how you can watch the guys tending to the rotissiere meat right from behind the counter. I had the 1/2 chicken, very JUICY and delicious, with yellow rice and red beans. My fiance had the whole order of mixed pork and beef ribs, also very tasty. I wish they offered better hot sauce though, when we asked all we got was some pretty generic Frank's hot sauce type stuff. We also took home a piece of their "ice box cake" which was pretty good, and we're not even dessert people. The value is outstanding, $32 total and we both had plenty leftover for lunch today. Been here now 4 times and although the food is decent, the wait times are always longer than they say for pickup. Sitting here right now, 20 mins late. It's irritating. And it seems as though it's been +20 mins every time like they're doing it on purpose for some reason. But they've never got it out on time. Be honest about wait times or somehow address this issue and I'll change my rating and actually talk about the food. read more

This place generally has good food but they just hiked up the prices because they extended the take out business and added dine in which sucks. Plus any time we order food from them, it's never ever ready on time. I'm also not a fan of a big tray full of rice (who eats like that?), I usually end up throwing out a lot of rice. When I was living in Bound Brook this was my go to spot for a big meal. Nothing could stop me from ordering the beef ribs w/ rice, fries, and black beans. I never received beef ribs from this spot that wasn't succulent and full of flavor. The rice and beans are great as well, but I come here for the meat! I recommend using the hot sauce, it not only gives your food some heat, but it pairs well with the marinade they use for their meat. My downside is the parking is limited considering how packed this place can get. If you're in the Bound Brook area I would recommend this place if you're looking for good Portuguese food. read more

Is it good Portuguese food, Yes. Is it great Portuguese food, no, it is not. The place provides serviceable food for a decent price. The pork spareribs are some of the meatiest and juiciest I have tried at a Portuguese restaurant. However their chicken, which should be the staple at this place, is dry and the dark meat is often inedible. If you need a quick, tasty dinner, feel free to stop in and you won't be overly disappointed. read more

I've been here since they opened up around 10 years ago? Back then it was a great deal with an order of ribs with rice and beans for $14 (tax included!). Over the years the prices have gone up to the point the last time I ordered it was over $21. The food isn't that complicated, but most comfort food aren't. They're just delicious. I don't think these are the original owners. Chicken is very tough and seasoning off. Ribs were okay . Potatoes were awful. They would give you olives and Giardiniera salad but not anymore. The tray sizes are noticeably smaller. Prices are very high for small amount of food. Very disappointed. We gave it three tries but never again. The orginal owner was the son of the man behind Grove BBQ in North Plainfield. I may try them again even though it is further away. Sad was a really great place. read more

28 BBQ Is the only barbecue place I will always go to, even tho it's 30mins away from home. But they have really fresh & great steak. I love there salad topped with the house dressing. But one of there main plates that I will never stop ordering is the Garlic Chicken, it's very delicious. read more

Typically, I don't like to write updates, but I am going to on this one. I had this place rated as 5-stars, but I try to be very selective with my 5-star ratings. I have lowered 28 BBQ to a 3-star, but that is still a very respectable rating. When I first started going here, everything was always spot on but I have had some pretty so-so experiences on my last few visits. The new dining room they built is nice - it gives you another indoor space to eat. I feel like the service is hit or miss - some are better than others but it is usually decent. On to the food. The garlic shrimp app is awesome - they give you a ton of shrimp. This is my favorite item on the menu at 28 BBQ. I usually go with the chicken and pork ribs combo for my meal. My wife usually gets a house salad for one of her sides and I really like the salad. They have a great house dressing - it reminds me of almost like a raspberry vinaigrette. I really like the chicken here - it is always spot on. But, the ribs have been so off the last few times I have been here. They have been incredibly dry and almost overcooked. There has also been a ton of fat on them - leaving very little meat on to eat. I was pretty disappointed by that. The portions are huge - but, there is an absolute ton of rice and who is actually going to eat all that rice? I always like the chicken but the ribs have been off. Salad is good and they also have good fries. Prices are very reasonable, almost cheap. I am not going to stop coming here, but I may just stick with the chicken or give something else a try. read more

BBQ 28 was a recommendation from a friend and to my surprise I was rather disappointed with my visit. Rather than a Portuguese roll, I was given white slice bread, chicken was dry and not falling off the bone as in the usual Portuguese BBQ joints in Ironbound area and beef ribs were tough and tasteless. I ordered over the telephone and was told 20 min. I stopped 20-25 min later and gave my name and number to the girl. She announced my name to the staff and made it sound that my order would be right out. In the meantime, other customers came in without having called and were given their take out orders before me. 30 additional minutes passed and I still did not have my order ! A total of 50 minutes passed from initial call and no order. I informed the girl to cancel my order. Very disorganized service. The food may be good but 1 star for lack of service. The rice was delicious and authentic, the chicken was well seasoned and perfectly cooked. They have a take out section, and a dine in area. We ordered from here twice once the picanha the steaks were as hard as a rock, very dry, rice was very salty uneatable, the second time we ordered chicken and ribs the same thing very very dry could not even pull it from the bone. Portuguese BBQ. Very neat and scrupulously clean little restaurant. Excellent food in large portions at a VERY reasonable price. You won't leave hungry! A real find and convenient off street parking. On my list to return to sample more of the menu. The Portuguese sausage appetizer is very tasty. Spare ribs and short ribs are very good. Got very busy with families at about 6:30 the Friday night we ate there. Worth trying!!! read more

The absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced (no exaggerations.) Was not even acknowledged for 20 minutes upon arriving when I finally made my way to the counter one woman ignored me when I asked about my order and the owner told me that I wasn't helping him by asking about whether the order I called in an hour ago was ready or not. This BBQ is Portuguese so don't expect tomato based sugar sauce. Their version of BBQ is meat, seasoned and grilled or roasted over charcoal, and is delicious. Gf and I split a full chicken with rice & a side of beans, plus a side of fries and a couple bottled iced teas. I think we were out of there for less than $25 including a good tip - I forget exactly. I do remember the full chicken with rice and a choice of other side was $14; you could get a half for around $8. Portions were great, we were full and still brought some home. It seemed the only drinks they had were bottled brands, but there was a nice selection. They even had unsweetened iced tea in a bottle. Pure Leaf or Gold Peak or some such brand. No alcohol. Don't know if they have BYOB policy. There is some outdoor seating. The restaurant has 2 doors: the right side is takeout and the left is the dining room. We went at lunchtime on a Tuesday. There was a family with small children there as well as an older couple. Also a couple of single diners. Evenings when I've driven by there, the parking lot has been packed. Decor was simple but clean. A few Portuguese cultural accents, a small gallery of guest children's "artwork," and a couple TVs with the sound turned off. I forget what they were showing - maybe sports? Not a cozy romantic room, but a nice clean place for some good food and conversation. There were two waitresses and they both served us and everyone else. They said they work as a team. They were very nice, and eager to make sure we were satisfied. I think someone else reviewed them as rude and difficult to communicate with. We did not have that experience at all. They both had excellent command of English. When they presented us with the check, they also gave us a comment card and urged us to fill it out. They said they were looking for ways to improve their service. The restaurant is dirty and unsanitary. Chicken and ribs had been heated in the oven with no Bbq flavor. Fries were not cut fresh, they were frozen in the bag Below average food. I will never eat there again, and do not recommend at all. read more

Very solid Brazilian BBQ joint. Huge portions good for big party. If you ordering full dish expect full tray of food to go. Mostly rice but plenty of meat and whatever else you are ordering. Good for 2 people. We always order too much. I love their sausage and my wife loves their garlic chicken ( lots of garlic). read more

I won't be coming back. We spent $100 for 4 people to eat dinner. Our meat, ribs, and chicken were so dry. The rice was dry, and so was the tres leches cake. I was so disappointed, especially considering the price for each plate, which was around $20 each. The waitress brought my daughter her plate of wings and told her sorry you asked for your sauce in the side but they poured it on top. They knew it was wrong but delivered it anyway. I had to ask them to make it right. Our appetizer didn't come out. We were told it was going to come out with the rest of the meal. Not sure why, it's an appetizer. Anyway, I'm usually very easy to please, but in this case I had to air these complaints. First time checking out this place and wasn't sure what to expect thanks to varying reviews. However the bf and i enjoyed the food and we will be back. We stopped by today for lunch around 1:30. We walked in to a clean establishment run by a couple of friendly servers. Based off the reviews we ordered the garlic shrimp app, whole chicken with rice and beans, and a small order of fries. The app was delicious along with everything we ordered. Chicken was well seasoned and juicy, rice was flavorful, and fries were crispy. Including two ice teas our bill was $34. The portions are huge so we took a good amount home for another meal. One item i didnt like: fruit flies made it a bit difficult to enjoy the meal. This place always delivers with good food, ckn is tender, everything with the food is good. The problem is with the take out service. No matter what time you call, they say 20 minutes, but they do not start cooking your food until you get there. So a pick up order can take a total of up to 45 minutes. They won't change their ways. For example, today I was in a rush. I called and placed my order and said please have it ready in 20 minutes because I need to run in, pick it up, and go. So over the phone I said please start cooking, don't wait for me to get there.... Well they didn't listen to me.... They did not start cooking and I ended up waiting another 20 minutes while I was there while I already said to start cooking. I tried this in the past and I got the same result. My friend was a huge fan of this place and so he got my husband to cater mu birthday with 28 BBQ. Every one at my party was salivating when they realized it was 28 BBW. Very affordable, tasty and huge portions. Cannot review service but we enjoyed the roasted chicken, rice&beans, and beef short ribs. No complaints except i wish i had eaten more. :) read more

This is good, cheap Brazilian rodizio. Chicken is the best. The beef is authentic, but can be a little tough and grislty for the average gringo. The side dishes are huge. Definitely try the soups. This is also the only place around to get decent tres leches. read more

Based on three visits (take-out) the food here is good but not great; I prefer the shrimp, also the bbq chicken; but I thought the ribs were ordinary. Big portions, good sides - french fries, beans and rice. It is usually busy which makes the small dining area crowded and noisy. Outside seating would be OK. Prices are reasonable. If I was to BYOB at this place I would leave the wine at home and bring a six-pack of Corona. read more

I've ordered take out from here a couple times already. I usually get platters of rice, bbq chicken, bbq pork ribs, and french fries. I always used to have to travel to Newark to get this, so when I found out there was a Portuguese place in Bound Brook that had them I was excited. They are just as good as the platters I'd get in Newark. I highly suggest trying this place if you love Portuguese food. The staff are also very friendly when you walk in :) read more
