So we stayed at the hotel over the weekend. Great hotel!! The restaurant not so good we got the fish and chips. The fries were perfect, fish tasted like trash. Very expensive food. Save yourself the disappointment and head into town for a meal. We paid $101 for 2 fish and chip meals and a couple drinks... went to Appalachian brewing and spent the same amount and got 3 appetizers, 2 delicious meals, 3 bar drinks and a dessert for $101. read more

We had arrived at our hotel which was next door to the Wyndam. Since we were tired, we decided to check out the Wyndam's restaurant, 1863. A quick check showed decent reviews but on the pricey side. We were here at 6 p.m. on a Wednesday. At that time of day, the restaurant was surprisingly dead. There was only one person sitting in the dining room. We were given a table by a window. One thing we did notice was that the furnishings were beginning to look shabby. Our server was prompt and friendly. She took our drink orders. I had a lemonade, which was quite good, while my husband had a Yuengling. After looking over the limited menu, we both decided to try the prime rib. The menu listed a queen sized portion and a king sized one. We asked our server how big the queen sized one was. She didn't know and said she would check. That told me that she hadn't been properly trained when it came to the menu. It turned out that the queen size was 12 ozs. while the king size was 16 ozs. We both opted for the queen size. While we were waiting, she brought us some bread and a side of spreads for it, one of which was honey. The bread was just about as hard as a rock. The prime rib came with mashed potatoes, a few asparagus spears and a couple of whole carrots. We both agreed that the prime rib was tough, even though it was cooked as we ordered (medium rare). The whole meal was a let down---especially considering that each entree costs $30. My advice---if you eat here, skip the prime rib. Maybe some of the other entrees are better but we'll never know. If we are in the area again, we will give this place a pass. read more

They have great help that are WAYYYYY understaffed. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. You can do better with a drive into Gettysburg.

We were staying at the hotel where this is located so it was quite convenient. Service was prompt and efficient, food came in a reasonable time, drinks were good and the food was tasty. No issues, except for the hours... there was a convention at the hotel, it was full or mostly full, opening time for this restaurant on a weekend night should be much earlier than 5pm. read more

I had several meals here over a visit to Gettysburg. We stayed at the Wyndham Hotel. I really liked breakfast overall. They need to work on the toast (not crisp) and the hash browns (no flavor). Thumbs up on the pancakes and scrapple. I had the Adams County breakfast and the American breakfast. I can't say I enjoyed the one dinner I had there, the prime rib. This review is just for the hotel restaurant. I really like this hotel and its conference facilities. It looks classy too. The food served during a conference is better than at many other PA hotels. But now after two separate dinners at the hotel's "fine dining" restaurant before the conference began, I won't dine there again. Why? High prices. Slow service. A "corporate" attitude. "Corporate policy makes us do it this way." High service gratuity pre-added--which wasn't earned, making a simple dinner ridiculously expensive. Over $60 for just me. The prime rib was good. Potatoes were not edible. Wine prices way too high. Now the bar of the hotel is very fine. Great happy hour deals and wonderful bartenders. So I like conferences at the Wyndham and a cocktail at the bar. But my tip is drive into town for a more affordable meal. read more

Great food, great service! We stumbled upon this place spontaneously today. The restaurant was empty when we got there, but then again it was 1:30pm. We were greeted by a very nice host, who ended up being out waitress too. The manager even came out to greet us at one point, which was very nice of him. Overall, the service was excellent. We ordered the oyster po' boy, ham and cheese omelet and the crab, shrimp, and mussels flatbread. The omelet tasted pretty average, but the po' boys and the flatbread were really good. The po' boys had a nice twist to them; there were pickled veggies in the sandwich, which added a nice tang. The oysters were of decent size too. I would definitely recommend trying this restaurant if you haven't already or are in the area! read more

Another fantastic Mother's Day buffet! This year had a Spanish theme with plenty of charcuterie and artisan cheeses. The other room had several carving stations but my favorite thing by far was the bouillabaisse which is a French seafood dish popularized here in the states by none other than the the iconic Julia Child. This recipe did not disappoint. Lots of seafood with a savory broth. Yum! I went back for seconds! I almost forgot the desserts which were amazing works of art. The team at the 1863 certainly know how to craft an artful menu and deliver culinary excellence. I highly recommend a visit soon. You won't regret it! Oh..and Mom loved it too! read more

Firstly, the water was amazing! Then came the bread with the honey, butter, and bleu cheese. With the exception of the honey; sort of tasted like it came out of a cask from 1863. The bleu cheese and butter was perfect to ease the hardtack they served with it, they are so authentic with the historic times of the battle. Then came the drinks. She ordered Tito's lemonade, was good. I ordered a double shot gin and tonic to be served in a tall glass. When it arrived, in a short glass, it was good and strong. The appetizer came, calamari, layered over a scanty dollop of marinara. The calamari was a mixture of chopped tentacles and baby octopus deep fried in some type of oil that clung tightly to the aborted babies bodies. We both ordered the filet mignon. It was an easy choice out of the whopping 8 items to order from unless you want a sandwich. FYI, I seen a whole table of sandwiches come out and they looked like a few slices of lettuce with deli meat with a whole lot of tackbread. The chunk of meat came with a scoop of mashed potatoes with asparagus and carrots also a small carafe of aus jus that had a lot of nutmeg swirled in it. We both ate the asparagus and carrots first. Not bad but really, you can't mess those up to badly. I ordered mine Medium-rare and hers medium-well. I cut a piece of the steak off and ate the tasteless, well above medium-rare, meat. She did the same cutting into her bleeding chunk of meat. We obviously realized that the waitress must have sat the wrong dish in front of us, so we exchanged. However, in the waitress's defense, we believe she was a little stoned and covering it up with all of the perfume that you could taste in the air. After we cut into the center of each we realized they were the same. Not well or rare could be found. The aus jus came in handy as the meat was in keeping with the tradition of the period food, tasteless, dry, the most awful "filet mignon" I have ever eaten. The mashed potatoes were slightly cold with the taste of instant potatoes, really. The water, butter, and bleu cheese were top-notch along with the drinks from the bar. Everything else, to include the service, wasn't worth a tenth of the $140 plus we laid out for this rubbish. I figured they can have this type of crap service / food because the majority of people are tourists and it's a "one and done". Get the tourist's money and tough luck on the quality. As for us locals that would love a high quality restaurant to frequent... this is not it by a long shot. Breakfast 45 dollars for two people. You would except a high quality food on your plate. Not here where the chef is lazy. 3 eggs omelet using liquid eggs. Which tells me the corn beef hash is coming out of can. If you don't have time to crack 3 eggs you aren't making the hash from scratch. Mind you the 20 or so breakfasts he had to make today I understand not. The coffee was bitter at 3.95. Service was very good. You are ready to go to a real restaurant and make good money. The moral to this story is you have to crack some eggs to make an omelet do so. Stop buying liquid eggs it will save you money on your food budget. read more

I would give it a 2.5. Service was perfectly lovely. But... Two things not to order: 1. Pork belly grilled cheese. I love pork belly, but this was too much of a good thing. Thick slab of super fatty pork belly across the entire sandwich plus cheese. I happily take my chances with a heart attack for the love of pork, but this should come with an aspirin and an EKG. 2. Oyster Po'Boy - the fried oysters were good. But they add pickled kidney beans, cauliflower, and green beans. This was such an unforced error that I just don't have words. read more

After reading reviews we almost didn't go but we're staying here and the hotel is first class all the way. We were tired from the Battlefield and everything downturn is so touristy and busy so we took a short MEL and walked down ! What a great decision food is as awesome we took the suggestion of the hostess we got the prime rib AND the crab cake both excellent choices the bread was hot and sides were great. Great ambience, good food and awesome service. It was a bit quiet for an early Friday night dinner which worked out best having two cranky and tired kids against one adult. Our server was very accommodating, even suggested the roasted beet salad when I gave up on what appetizer to order. It had huge chunks of my fave red and golden beets, Brussels sprouts, candied pecans and cheese. I didn't care for the gigantor pieces of cracked peppers but overall, it was refreshing and quite filling for a salad. The salmon was nothing spectacular but the tasty crispy skin elevated the blandness. Everyone around us ordered the prime rib and it looked scrumptious, I definitely had order envy. read more

Only had lunch here, and by the time I tried to eat the restaurant section was closed so I had to eat in the bar/lounge area. The food is well made the staff is professional and polite. The lunch menu has a nice selection, the food was hot and looked/tasted fantastic. Overall, I recommend eating here--save yourself the trouble fighting the crowds downtown and relax after a long day. We went here last night for dinner. The menu is very limited-the only vegetarian option was a margherita flatbread. I would have preferred a salad, but this was actually very tasty. My friend got the seafood flatbread and thoroughly enjoyed that too. My husband's $15 Cesar salad was quite small, but he was able to fill up with the bread given to us at the start of our meal. My friend's husband got a burger, which he said was delicious. All in all, this place was nice. The service was excellent, and the food was good. My only advice would be to add more vegetarian friendly options, and some different salads for those people who don't just want a Cesar or house salad. read more

The food was great and we had Josie for a server and she was extremely friendly and was attentive to us through our meal. I would highly recommend for a great dinner out. Unfortunately it's not well advertised and there are no signs to let you know where the restaurant is. We had breakfast here while staying at the hotel for a weekend getaway and my review is for breakfast only. The food is mediocre and over priced. There were about maybe 8 other tables, so not busy by any means on a Saturday around 930am. We ordered breakfast and the waitress forgot some of the order and never came back to the table to check and see if everything was ok so we were never able to ask her to bring it. There were only 2 waitresses(including ours) that we saw and we weren't able to get the attention of either of them to bring the missed item. When the bill came the missing item was on it and I asked the waitress to remove it and she said why? I told her we never got the item and she said oh I guess I forgot. Also we noticed when she was carrying another tables food she had the tray on her shoulder to help balance ( not out of the ordinary) however her hair was in the food on the tray she was carrying. I would recommend possibly going elsewhere if you want a good and simple breakfast for much less. read more

As a local this is the best restaurant in Gettysburg. I work in the tourist industry here and advise 1863 to all who about a great place to eat. Our family always eat their Thanksgiving buffet every year since they open. Chef Claude knows how to prepare great meals. read more

We stopped in for breakfast a while ago. The tables were set with white linen cloths and napkins, the silverware was heavy and polished nicely and the entire ambience of the restaurant was lovely. Our breakfast cost $41. That MAY may have been (ok, it was) my fault for ordering a side of corned beef hash thinking it was a side dish. It wasn't! It was an entire breakfast. The food was very good. The service was good and as I said before, the ambience was lovely. It's not a place for active, screaming kids running around. It's a nice place for adults to dine as they greet the day with a nice cup or two of coffee. Enjoy! read more

This was one of the best meals I've had in Gettysburg yet. There were so many options on the menu. I was between the filet and the boneless honey fried chicken... I chose the chicken. It was delicious! The breading and the honey glaze were what set it apart. Another great thing about this restaurant is the service. I had Claire as my waitress and she was awesome! She has a warm and friendly personality, and was very knowledgeable about the menu! She answered every question I had about the menu, and made a great recommendation with my dinner. I never got around to our second visit to the 1863 at Wyndham. Why did we go again? Certainly, after reading the "good" reviews, we thought breakfast was a fluke...it wasn't! The next night we went for dinner. It's 6:00, they open at 5:00, they've been open an hour. Like breakfast, there's nobody at the host desk, the sign says please wait to be seated. So...we wait...wait...wait...wait...I see the host talking to the lazy head chef...he sees us...we wait...did I mention I'm a paraplegic with crutches? Like 8 mins or so, the host comes. Unlike the other people who give this place 5 stars, I don't know the first names of 7-8 people here, but I know it's the same guy that made us wait before. We are seated, it's 6:00, the place is dead, we are the only ones there. The candles aren't lit, there are people setting tables. We order drinks, an ap, a prime rib and a spaghetti squash dish. I say I want the rib medium rare and the server looks baffled, like...am I sure? Or like...we don't do medium rare here, but she says nothing. They bring bread, like breakfast, again the whipped butter is rock hard. The ap comes, we are eating, and somebody reaches over me to grab the flower vase and put fresh flowers in it, because this is a classy joint. Nothing I like better than fresh pollen on my ap. The flies are still here from yesterday, and I'm pretty sure they live here year round, or at least vacation here for the whole summer. Dinner comes, squash ordered by my GF looks pretty good and she says tastes pretty good. My prime rib is over cooked 2 1/2 notches, my guess is it was medium rare before they nuked it. Mashed potatoes are cold, asparagus is tough. All that doesn't really matter because this thing is gorgeously plated, it's magnificent! That is, unless you actually want to eat it, and like cold overcooked food. Wait...did I mention we are the only customers, and they only need to prepare 2 dishes, and they have been open for an hour? Our server has vanished, so I can't really complain about the steak. Our water glasses are empty, because everybody has vanished. Our server never comes back to ask if everything is ok. Did I mention we are the only 2 people in the place? Where's Stephen, Ashanti, Claire, Josie, Peter, Paul and Mary and John, George, Paul and Ringo that everybody else that gives them 5 stars mentions? Who knows? Have you ever noticed that on Yelp the people who rave about the food at a crappy place, usually have only 1-3 reviews, like they eat out once every 2 years? Look at the last two 5 star reviews for this place. One person has dined out twice in 2 years, the other twice in 3 years. But they always know the names of all the help at the place they eat and toss them kudos. They always take magnificent pictures and know every succulent ingredient in the food and it's "Oh, so yummy, num, num?". There's a reason for that! I would avoid this place, I can't recommend it. Drive up the highway to Top of the 80's in Hazelton If you want a good meal. Yeah...it's like an hour away, but trust me...it's 10 times better, 15 times better service, better views, AND cheaper!!! If you enjoy paying "fine" dining prices for cold food and bad service, the 1863 is your dream place!
