Nice ambience and setting. Service was very friendly, accommodating and generally attentive (although we had to ask for bread which is delivered to all the tables). Oysters selection was great but had a couple of them that were so small they were almost non-existent (even by east coast standards) but we overlooked that (we both said "we paid $3 for an oyster that's not really there"!). The "clams in the pot" were very good, we had the house one with the Italian sausage - probably the highlight of the food we had. Main dishes were pricey and to be frank, disappointing. I had a pork "bacon cut" with the bone-in "special" that was overlooked for such a thin piece of meat and drowning in sauce. My wife's scallops were well prepared but very small. We had a really good time but will think again about spending so much money on food that was good, but not that good. Maybe it was a slightly off night .... Since moving out of the city, the wife and I have had to drive back in for a great meal. 100 steps (and a teute heure) has solved that. The raw bar is fresh and delicious and really satiates cravings. The seafood here is quite good leaving nothing to be wanted. This is the place to go for fresh seafood! The tower was excellent and offered a little taste of everything. I split it with a friend. It was a little expensive but it was pretty impressive. Oysters, clams, lobster, scallops, shrimp and crab claws all in one! Everything was ice cold, which, when eating oysters, that's a must. The place is nice and new and the service was outstanding. Our waitress was super informative. We also brought our own bottle of rum and they were able to whip us up mojitos with fresh mint leaves. Overall, the food was amazing - flavorful and some uniquely creative combinations. Visited this establishment for my mother's birthday dinner a couple weeks ago and was very impressed with the quality of food and service. Oysters were some of the best I've had in the area. Actually, all of the the dishes were exceptional, everyone was very happy with their choices. Service was welcoming from the time we were greeted at the door by the friendly maitre d' to our lovely waitress who was very knowledgeable about the menu and also very friendly and attentive. My husband and I wanted to celebrate our anniversary and instead of heading into the city where we normally go, we opted to find a seafood restaurant nearby. I want to first commend the service - our waiter CJ was amazing and attentive. He answered all our questions about the menu and made sure to check on us often. The owner, who stopped by our table was beyond friendly and made us feel welcomed, just as if we were regulars. Now onto the food... as a table snack they serve these super yummy crackers that have a kick to them - I had CJ bring 2 bowls, that's how good they were, lol. We ordered the large seafood tower, and hands down would vote the BEST oysters in NJ. There were 8 different types of oysters, clams, jumbo shrimp, lobster and swordfish ceviche - fresh and full of flavor. As a meal, we split the Curry Mussels pot, and that was divine!!! I could have dipped an entire loaf of bread in the sauce, it was that delicious!!! But, it didn't end there... they brought out these "Parker" rolls, and they are the most amazing rolls I have ever eaten!!! I would go there just to eat them... 1 bite and you are hooked! Even though we opted to skip dessert, CJ stopped by the table with a plate of ice cream that had "Happy Anniversary" written on the dish in chocolate syrup!!! Definitely one of the nicest gestures ever! (THANK YOU again for that!!!) Lastly, we also purchased a bottle of their homemade hot sauce - it was fantastic, so we couldn't resist having a bottle of our own!!! First hour fans of ATH, but we are starting to really enjoy OHS...beautiful oysters..yum..lots of small plates that make it easy to choose something 'adventurous' without killing the night. With some bar seats for walk ins, u can actually decide last minute to drop in.. The august fluke ceviche was divine, the current clams and pork incredible as usual! Always love coming to OHS and it never disappoints. My wife and I enjoy sitting at the raw bar because we don't need a reservation for these seats and its just fun to watch the shucking in action. We are not big oyster fans so we opt instead for the shrimp and crab claws. The shrimp are def best around and the crab claws are tasty and just something u don't see too often. If there is a must order on the OHS menu it is the shrimp and paprika small bite. The sauce is to die for and nothing tastes better than dunking hot fresh Parker House rolls into it. Yum! Tonight we also tried the spring onion hush puppies appetizer and it was really good too. The crunchy corn meal with some sauce was a really nice combo. We then moved on to our main dish which we split. We chose the Monkfish over mashed potato and celery root. Another new choice for us and a good one. The monk fish was done just right and the mash also had a spicy kick to it. To close out dinner tonight we chose the dark chocolate and orange ice cream with a tasty biscotti and a cup of coffee. No better way to end a meal than with a great scoop of ice cream. This meal was just a home run but I would be remiss if I didn't mention how great the staff is. From the time we were seated to the time the check came we were treated with high caliber friendly service. Our server was there when we needed her yet gave us our space when she sensed we were enjoying each other's company. We always have a wonderful meal at 100 steps. We like to try the new menu items each month. We had the pimento cheese and fritto misto to start. The shrimp and meatballs are a staple and everyone should try. Can beat that is a byob. You have to make a stop if you like oysters. read more

We had a very nice night out and thought the food was great. The owners are so great and friendly and came over to the table more then once to check in. I love the fact that its a BYOB like ATH but was very shocked by the prices. Due to the small plates, you really have to get 2 per person and they are each the price of an entree at another restaurant. This restaurant came highly recommended amongst friends so I was very excited to surprise my husband for his birthday. We started with the oysters, it is a raw bar after all. They were the best part of the meal. I would return for the oysters alone. The potato parsnip soup was perfectly balanced. Slightly sweet topped with spiced walnuts to balance out the sweetness. Just right. We had a mixed greens salad with bleu cheese and pancetta. It would have been decent if it weren't for the "briney" dressing they doused it in. My husband ordered the steak sandwich with fries for his entrée and I have to say it would have been the last thing on the menu I would've ordered, but it was fantastic. The broccoli and horseradish pesto was to die for. However...not worth $22.00. I had a pasta dish with duck because I particularly love duck, but it was swimming in broth. It should have been a soup and not even a tasty soup at that. Any flavor that was potentially there was completely washed out and the pasta was mush. It didn't taste like they even salted the pasta water. That was highly disappointing. Dessert ended the meal on a pleasant note. The coffee ice cream affogato was delicious as was my decaf coffee. Nice and strong. My husbands espresso was just right and his sticky toffee pudding cake was decent. The frozen yogurt it came with really made it though. Alone I wouldn't have taken a second bite. Overall I felt like the quality didn't match the value. I'm only giving three stars because my husband rated it a three and it is his birthday. I would've given two. read more

Jim & Andrea Carbine have done it again! The amiable owners of the highly successful A Toute Heure have just opened a new restaurant that is 100 steps from their current hit restaurant. Their star chef, Kara Decker, has moved across the street to the new restaurant and she shows once again why she has earned her Best Chefs of America honor. My wife & I dined there last night during their initial soft opening. The new restaurant is beautifully constructed with a gorgeous raw bar, and a nice selection of fresh raw oysters and clams. Some of the outstanding dishes that we had for dinner were a seared and chilled scallop crudo, with lime vinaigrette, fresh chiles, capers, smoked cauliflower and creme fraiche. This was the best crudo I have ever had. The subtle smokiness was sublime. Another not to be missed dish is the cockles, with smoked bacon and benito broth, salt cod croquettes, fennel confit and chile oil. I could take a bath in that broth, it was so yummy! We also had the amazing rabbit ragu, white bean ravioli, with crispy copa, & parmesan. This was a delicious hearty dish and the rabbit was so tender. I highly recommend that you give this restaurant a try. If you liked A Toute Heure then you will love 100 Steps Raw Bar Supper Club. read more

We had a wonderful dinner at OHS last night. We had top notch service from the second we walked in the door - everybody seemed truly genuine, welcoming and happy to be there. We had a nice selection of oysters and some delicious shrimp cocktail to start. We are used to small plates at Bin 14 in Hoboken and OHS had significantly larger serving sizes. That meant that we over ordered big time and had to cancel our entrees midway through our meal. But the butternut squash crostini and octopus toastada were unique and delicious. The meatball was good as well and a large serving size (all the servings were larger than we expected). My favorite dish by far was the curry mussels. I wouldn't have ordered that if I had not read about it in reviews but it was really tasty and unlike any mussels I have had before. We were celebrating my birthday and I was really happy with this meal - it was special and we won't forget it! (We are still remembering our new years eve dinner at a toute heure across the street - that was outrageously good too). read more

If you are looking for a good small plates place, this isn't it. I'd recommend Circa in High Bridge over this place any day of the week. I visited 100 Steps last week with a few friends. The menu looked interesting enough, but they aren't kidding when they say small plates. The menu is divided into Small Plates, plates and pasta. What they don't tell you is everything is small plates and I mean small. We started with a goat cheese board which came with 4 cubes (and I mean small cubes) of cheese. The board had crostini also. Then, we got bread on the table with olive oil which was delicious. After that bread came more bread, this time, it was foccaccio bread. I figured out they keep filling you up with bread because you'll never get full on the food. We ordered the braised pork shoulder. For $18, I would have expected a fairly sizeable piece of meat. What we got was barely the size of a deck of cards. Then we ordered the sea bream. Again for $18, there was barely anything on the board. The other dishes we ordered aren't even worth mentioning. Still hungry, I decided to order the mushroom dumplings. For $16, we got 3 little dumplings. After almost 3 hours (yes, service was horrible) and $33, I left hungry; came home to have a bowl cereal. We ate at 100 Steps last nite. Upon entering the noise level was so deafening that we found ourselves shouting at the hostess to identify ourselves. It proceeded downhill from there. I never write reviews but I'm really sick and tired of going out for a dinner with friends and having an experience like we had last nite. Aside from the unacceptable noise level, the menu was hard to navigate. Our cheese plates were TINY TINY portions of "eh" cheese with TINY pieces of stale bread. We ordered meatballs and some mushroom glop as small plates and they were seriously mediocre to bad. I've had better meatballs at Lenny's pizzeria down the street for 1/3 the price. Our entrees were very average-won't go into details. I will say that dessert was very good. Prices are average and it is BYO. I think other people must feel the same way because on a Saturday nite this resto was empty when we left at 9:30pm. I would urge anyone who wants to have a really nice dining experience (including converstation with table companions) to boycott places like this. It is time that we as diners stand up and demand a better overall ambiance - we deserve it! read more

Tried this restaurant last night with good friends who had already been and love it. We are foodies with an appreciation of really good food and this restaurant was spectacular!!!!! The chef is brilliant, Jim the owner made us feel so welcome and Jessica our waitress was a doll, couldn't do enough to take care of us...and we kept ordering! The oysters were so fresh and the best I've had anywhere and we tried several different kinds...great variety!! We then went on to share and taste one thing after the next and every bite was absolutely delicious beyond what I can find the words to express. You can literally taste the layers of flavors. We had..the shrimp, served with these little bread buns for dipping...no words to describe the sauce, like a warm tomato chutney with layers of flavor....the octopus tender and succulent, the meatballs incredible...there was a polenta appetizer...sooo delicious..and then we shared the tile fish entre' which melted in your mouth. I'm running out of adjectives here ....but now let's get to dessert!!! There are no words for the banana pudding and the crusty cookie that waits for you at the bottom of the sweet blue serving glass...resembling the most elegant, finest vanilla, buttery snickerdoodle type deliciousness!! Then there was the mint chocolate chip ice cream infused with the flavor of farm fresh home grown mint leaves....THERE ARE NO WORDS!!!!! We live a distance away but my family is more local to Cranford. My father is an oyster lover and cannot wait to share this restaurant with more family and friends. Bravo!! read more
