Chung's Cuisine is another one of those trendy Cantonese restaurants that endeavors to separate itself from the traditional food scene. The interior was open, spacious, and contemporary in design. The menu included traditional dishes blended with a twist of creativity. It is the in the top tier of the large Tao Heung restaurant conglomerate in Hong Kong, which owns about a dozen different brands.
Although it was located in the prime real estate of Times Square in Causeway Bay, its prices were actually very reasonable and competitive, especially given the high quality of the food.
We ordered a banquet for 12 people which included expensive delicacies such as bird's nest soup, individual abalone and steamed live fish, and the special weekday price was HK$2,888 (which is only approximately US$30 per person.)
There were a total of 10 courses including steamed dessert buns, as well as a course of 6 dishes of amazing appetizers to start the party.
The abalone was paired with a delicate black Chinese mushroom and some green vegetables and was served individually (see picture). We were given knives and forks especially for this dish. The abalone was sweet and tender, and the flavor was rich and natural.
I also liked the golden fried chicken, which was a small home grown chicken fried to a perfect golden brown. Its meat was moist and flavorful, and you could tell it's not one of those frozen chickens. It also came with a somewhat tangy dipping sauce.
The bird's nest soup was good stuff, flavorful but without the after taste of msg. The steamed live fish, however, was a bit disappointing and was over-cooked. Most other dishes were good - some were more memorable than others.
Serving sizes were large (by Hong Kong's standard) and we needed to-go boxes for the leftovers.
Service has been prompt and friendly throughout the night. Our group ordered a lot of drinks (nobody had to drive) and they were always brought to us quickly. The two really cool servers made this wonderful meal a truly enjoyable party.
Chung's Cuisine has a banquet special every month with a different menu and is priced competitively. I highly recommend that you check it out if you are with a large family/group and happen to be roaming the streets of Hong Kong. read more
