Food (**** out of *****); As long as their head chef is in, the place is legit and will serve up…read moresome of the best seafood equal in cooking skill to the big restaurants. If you're going on a holiday or Sunday, be sure to ask if their head chef is in before you decide if you want to go there or not. I've been there many times and their head chef has never disappointed me. When in Sai Kung, I advise you to skip the restaurants that the touts will bring you to because those restaurants are much more expensive than but not better than this little mom and pop restaurant. Also, skip the big tourist trap restaurants on the main drag for the same reason. The owner "Michael" also owns a live seafood stand in the wet market behind the restaurant. Ask the owner to show you which seafood stand this is. Then, go and pick out and pay for the live seafood that you want them to cook for you. Take this seafood back to the restaurant and they will cook it for you for a small fee, This fee varies, but it is usually the greater of 200HKD per person or 100% of the price of the seafood. Many times, it is much less than this. I don't know how he figures how much to charge me as my Chinese speaking ability is crap, but he's always been fair and honest with me. This is a stupendous bargain, because I have a relative in the food industry and he informs me that most restaurants charge 200% of the price of the groceries as the profit margin to charge you. On this trip, I had the live abalone, living scallops, pissing shrimp (mantis shrimp), fresh razor clams, and chicken. All of the seafood has that fresh, sweet, sea taste that only living seafood has. None of it tasted "fishy". BTW, you have to tell them how you want it cooked, so if you're not a major foodie, bring a friend who is or it will be cooked wrong, through no fault of the restaurant's. I had the razor clam stir fried with hot peppers and black bean. It was not too spicy as to overpower the natural flavor of the razor clams. There was only a tiny bit of sand in it. On a previous visit, I had the razor clams steamed with garlic, ginger, onions, scallions, and wine. There was zero sand in it on my previous visit. I like it steamed more than the stir fry method. On this visit, I had the live scallops steamed with garlic, onions, scallions, ginger and wine. It was divine. The abalone was steamed with special sauce. Both the abalone and scallops were not rubbery. If you overcook these shellfish, it will be rubbery and it is very easy to overcook. The chef here is very skillful. The pissing shrimp (mantis shrimp) were stir fried in cheese crust. It was fragrant and slightly pungent from the cheese. All the seafood was excellent. The ginger chicken was average. I don't know what I was thinking, ordering a chicken in a seafood restaurant. Duh. Service (***** out of *****); Unlike most Cantonese restaurants, the waiters here will check up on you to see how you are doing, they'll change out your dirty plates, and the manager will also check up on you. Atmosphere (** out of *****); A typical mom and pop mini-restaurant. They have some photos of celebrities who've dined there before proudly displayed on the walls, but they have no decor and the front door is often open when the weather is nice outside, so you might have to fend off an occasional fly or mosquito. I did not see any flies at all on this trip. Conclusion (***** out of *****); The tally is 4 stars, but I gave them an extra star for value. They have no English menu, but it is not really necessary. All you have to do is point at the seafood that you want and then tell them, "tsing" (steamed), "chow tseow yeem" (stir fried with salt and pepper), "hu dow see tsew" (black beans and pepper), "cheese" (with cheese), or "chow" (stir fried). This is a hidden gem on the side streets frequented by locals, away from the tourist traps. For the best seafood in Hong Kong at a very reasonable price, go directly to New Tak Kee Seafood Restaurant. P.S. some unscrupulous seafood, mushroom, beef, and dairy vendors sell radioactive stuff from Fukushima and the surrounding regions in Japan. This is a big problem in Hong Kong because almost all food is imported into Hong Kong. My crazy S.O. actually tested all the seafood here and it is all within safety limits.

Truly one of the better seafood restaurants in Sai Kung. But, be warned, it is very expensive…read more The first thing to know is that Loaf On is not one of those touristy spots on the water. There isn't a pretty view of the sea. Instead, you will walk up two flights of very narrow stairs to a pleasant dining area and excellent service. The walls are decorated with their Michelin one star awards over the years, which is an accomplishment. My wife and I came for lunch. The set price lunches have a lot of food, but cost just under $3000 for two. I didn't need a banquet. So, I skipped that. Instead, we shared fried tofu as an appetizer. It was hot, creamy and light. Definitely the right choice. Then we shared grouper prepared two ways as the second course. A wise decision. It was delicious, had contrast, and emphasized the fresh fish flavor. That cost $880, but well worth it. Much better than the seafood places nearby.

I'm guessing because we're paying for the Michelin Star, and the cleaner, inside, tableclothed setting. I can attest they also have clean washrooms! I have to dock a star though because of all the nickel and diming they do even after charging more for their dishes (e.g. higher tea charge at HKD $18/pp but at least they exempted my toddler, another HKD $10 for providing 2 wet naps, for market priced dishes they charge not by dish for prep but by number of people at the table, etc). The server also gave my mom some attitude when she asked to see the Mantis Shrimp we ordered live before cooking (which is usual for Chinese restaurants to check the freshness and size), and said bluntly that they're already cooking it. We came to try how they do their Mantis Shrimp so that was the star of our lunch. We had it prepped fried with garlic, pepper, salt. My hubby liked the natural sweetness in the meat. I found it just OK. We ordered the Fried Tofu with Chili and Garlic that others seem to enjoy, again hubby liked it, I found it OK. It came on a pile of orange rice crisps that had no flavor and added nothing to the dish. Our last dish was the Braised Pork Belly with Pickled Vegetables which was pretty good with ample meat that was very filling. My favorite of the 3 dishes. For a restaurant located on Sai Kung's Seafood Street, its also interesting that they're famous for their Crispy Skin Chicken, which you have to reserve in advance or you're out of luck if you try to order it there. We did not reserve ahead... :/ When looking for the restaurant, note that they are on a street not overlooking the waters and have no fishtank display outside to show you their fresh produce like their neighbors. So keep an eye out for their signage. Their dining area is up a flight of narrow stairs but I think they might have a table or 2 on the street level though I didn't get to see since they directed us upstairs though an outside entrance. Service wise, at least they carried our stroller up for us.

Fair warning, if you are planning to eat seafood, expect you pay a pretty penny. The nice thing…read moreabout here is that you get to pick your own seafood. My recommendations: lobster noodles (yee meen) with cheese, razor clams with vermicelli/garlic and geoduck sashimi. We came in a big party so we were able to order 6 different types of seafood. Of the 6, everything was really good but the top 3 were phenomenal. The lobster noodles with cheese was my favorite. You can't find this in America and my friend specifically chose this restaurant for this dish. The cheese that they used went perfectly with the lobster and noodles. Almost made the noodles like a carbonara. I have never had razor clams before but it's just a long clam. The meat was soft and chewy. Who doesn't like fresh garlic and noodles? The sauce that was on the clam and noodles was delicious. Lastly the geoduck was used for sashimi and soup. The geoduck was sliced thinly and dipped with wasabi soy sauce. It was super fresh and you can't just stop at once piece. The soup that was prepared with the head had vegetables and tofu. It was rich and really sweet. The one thing I wanted to try in Asia was the mantis shrimp. They may look big, but it hardly has any meat. The flavor was spot on though. Service was good and they came around to change our plates frequently. Our bill was 6444 HKD for 7 dishes.

This restaurant has all live fresh seafood that you can pick any seafood and quantity you want,…read moresome of seafood is by piece or by weight. And then there is a charge to have all seafood cooked to whatever seasoning. We ordered mantis shrimp, it was deep fried there isnt much meat, scallops were steamed with rice vermicelli noodle and soy sauce, scallops were over cooked, and crab was deep fried with fried galic and green onions spicy. Cooked just right, and a fresh live fish was steam chinese style with scallions and soy sauce, fish steamed perfectly. They have indoor and outdoor seating. There is no pricing for the seafood than has to be weight, and there is a fee to cook each seafood item that choose, it will add up bill quickly. After receiving bill we were charged for tea and anything extra you requested. If you need to splurge once when in Hong Kong it is ok, pricing will be on the high end. They also have on far left a restaurant with same name. And on right is another restaurant that has same fresh live seafood restaurant. So chose wisely.

Firstly, I want to call out the amazing service here. I was sitting outside but there is indoor seating and an upstairs. A boy came here with crutches and his table was upstairs. unfortunately they don't have an elevator but the host offered to piggy back him up which I thought was amazing. The host also kept giving people a heads up whenever the nearby lot had a cop giving out parking tickets. You can just tell that the staff was very customer first by the type of personal and unconventional service they provided which I, myself have never seen anywhere else before (literally in the world). Location wise, it's right on the water front on sai Kung, so the view is quite pleasant while you're enjoying your meal. After you order your dishes, you can go over to the giant fish tanks to pick out the fresh and live seafood. Literally every dish I had was absolutely amazing in flavor and super fresh. There's a few other Michelin Star rated seafood restaurants within walking distance but I've been told that the flavors here are unparalleled to. Here are some of the things we ordered in no particular order and hopefully somewhat correct names: Fish soup (5/5): surprisingly my favorite most memorable dish. Strong flavors without being overwhelming Fried squid cake (3.5/5): not as special as other items but great texture, crispy on the outside, similar to a deep fried fish ball Geoduck sashimi (5/5): super fresh ! Fried tofu (4.5/5): on the house and probably one of the best fried tofu I ever had. Crispy on the outside and the softest tofu ever inside. Fried abalone (4/5): great deep fried flavor. My only complaint was it was a little chewy but that might also be the natural texture of abalone Fried bigass shrimp whose English name I don't know but directly translated to "pee itself shrimp" (5/5): one of my top dishes, as large as a lobster. Tasted like lobster, deep fried flavor to perfection, but difficult to remove the shell from *update: mantis shrimp is the name* Uni fried rice (4/5): fried rice was cooked to perfection but I had to knock off a star just because it didn't really capture the uni flavor Crispy chicken (5/5): full of meat and flavor was on point, I was amazing at how they were able to make the skin on chicken so crispy as if it was Peking duck Red striped crab cooked in egg white (4/5): a little bland for my liking but the crab meat resembled the middle ground of king crab and singleness crab. Very simple flavors for those who like that Stir fried surf clams in black bean sauce (4/5): good flavor, cooked perfectly, but very similar to regular stir fried clam I would totally come back again on my next visit to Hong Kong! It's a shame that it is a bit of a journey and the best way there is if you know someone with a car, but worth it!

The pineapple buns with butter are served warm so the slab of butter in between the bun melts as you work your way through it. The top crust is so crispy while the interior of the bun remains soft and fluffy. This is incredibly hard to achieve. But most importantly, the flavor balance is everything. I admit it's almost like a heart attack in a bun, but they somehow don't make you feel guilty eating it. The butter just melds with the bun in a way that's not disgustingly oily? I've been on a hunt for pineapple buns with butter that are as good as this place but I haven't been successful. I also got their garlic bread, but I think you can skip it. It's very crispy and big, but not particularly notable. You should try their Portuguese egg tarts though, especially if you see that they're fresh out of the oven! They also sell hot and cold drinks here, like almond drink. Don't be shocked if the workers display an attitude... this is a well-known problem among HK service workers, so don't take it personally.
