I visited this restaurant on two occasions - both for dinner. I was recommended by relatives that live in one the complexes above Maritime Square, telling me it was a good place for a simple wonton dumplings in noodle soup, any time of day. It took some time to be seated when we arrived on both occasions, as the entrance is not always attended to. Also, they are short staffed, meaning available tables may not be ready for patrons. Be patient - but assertive.
The first visit we got the afternoon tea specials (right at the 5:30 deadline!) for an early, light dinner. We ordered the wonton dumplings in noodle soup and fish balls in noodle soup, which came quickly in acceptable tea-time portions. The wontons and fish balls were tasty and the ratio of dumpling to noodles made sense. We were adequately satisfied without being bloated. The wontons were fresh and well-sized, thin skins and lots of filling. The fish balls were chewy and not spongey, indicating dense meat without too much filling.
My next visit was only a week or so later, and this time we got their dinner set special for four. Available Monday to Friday, a set price will get you four servings of soup (served individually, not in a pot/large bowl), four bowls of rice, a plain cooked green of your choice (seasonal options), a three-item platter from the roaster (standard options available), and two dishes (3 daily options available). If anything it was a full standard Chinese meal. I was thoroughly pleased with the portion sizes, and all the items came out quickly - an advantage of getting the specials of the day no doubt. Soup was a bit on the salty side, but still had resemblance to a good home-cooked taste. The bowls of white rice are large, in good proportion to the accompanying dishes.
The crunchy roast pork, roast chicken, and charsiu we selected for the roaster platter were tasty and the portion was larger than we expected. The items were a bit dry, but tolerable as part of a combo meal. There variety available made up for the average taste, and recognizing they're a general Chinese kitchen and not specialized. Everything had good colour and texture, though the charsiu was a fatter cut than I typically prefer.
For our two dishes we got steamed egg and fish cake. The steamed egg was smooth and just cooked enough - a classic home-style addition to the large bowl of white rice. The fish cake came with a fresh raw oyster sauce - for those not too into fishy tastes, standard yellow mustard works as a good alternative sauce to give the fish cakes a kick. The fish cakes were crunchy outside and chewy inside, and came piping hot.
Overall the meal portions were sufficient for say four adults comprising of two men and two women. The dinner set is a really good deal for the variety and the home-cooked feeling it provides - almost like ordering in-home cooking or home-cooking meal deliveries. The dinner set and afternoon tea sets make this a go-to for simple Cantonese food on any night of the week. Cons for me are that there is a cost for tea per head, no matter what meal of the day, and the service was scarce. The tea didn't strike me as anything unusual, and it was only house tea anyways. As previously mentioned, they're short staffed so you'll have to be extra vocal from the time you're trying to be seated. read more
