It tasted like one of those savory taro pastry in dim sum (芋角). The texture of the mushy taro pairs well with the crunchy cashew, adding different layers of texture to the dish. Coffee flavored chicken: who would have thought coffee will go with chicken. It actually does. This is their way of fried chicken with a coffee based brown sauce. But my qualm is the rice that accompanied the dish. You can taste the chicken in the first bite of rice, but for some unknown reason, it had a very strange plastic-y kind of after taste that did not sit well on my taste buds. I tried to mask it with the soy sauce, chili sauce and ginger condiment and it only mediated that odd after taste ever so slightly. The Singaporean-style Char Kway Teow came with a large prawn in the center. It looked very impressive, but how did it taste? It was a solid plate of noodles, with a variety of thick and flat noodles, but the prawn was overcooked. After tasting this dish, I realized that I preferred the Penang-style CKT with a little spice kick and fried egg. To each his own. On the other hand, the Beef Rendang was very tender. If I return, I'd definitely order this again. We were served four large beef patties and the rendang sauce was 5 stars! Probably best in HK that I've tasted. We made reservations a few days ago and had spent substantial time looking through the menu, we were excited for this meal. Upon arrival tonight, the hostess refused to let us in, saying that we did not have a reservation (even though I have a confirmation email) and that someone actually booked the entire venue so they did not have a table for us. We argued with them for some time and were prepared to show them our confirmation, and they actually claimed to not e associated with the site Quandoo. Upon pressing more, they told us that they actually had a reservation and had contacted me to let me know the venue was booked and they were unable to accommodate us. This did not take place and I have no missed emails or phone calls from Petite Oyster. They did not so much as apologize for screwing up and we ended up having to scramble to find another restaurant in Sheung Wan last minute for my last dinner in Hong Kong.
