My dad's ancestry is Fujian, but he had never had Fujianese food before, so he wanted to try Fujianese food while we were in Hong Kong. Putien had a reputation for serving authentic Fujianese food, so we stopped at the one in Tsuen Wan when we were there shopping.
We went for the afternoon tea special, which was an incredibly good deal. For the price of a two person meal, we got vegetable soup, seaweed salad, rice noodles, braised fish, and complimentary taro dessert with nuts.
Let me begin with the seaweed salad. The seaweed salad was very pretty, with a cucumber slice wrapped around it. It had a bit of a sweet and sour flavor, and was overall very well seasoned.
The vegetable soup was very light and springy. The rice noodles had a lot of seafood and seaweed in them, which gave a nice sophisticated flavor. I did not try the braised fish as I don't like to eat bone on fish, but my dad thoroughly enjoyed it - it was braised whole fish, head and all.
The dessert was actually one of my favorite parts of the meal. A lot of desserts in Hong Kong can be a. It too sweet which makes an already filling meal just a bit too filling, but the taro and peanut soup was very light and cleansing. The taro had a mochi like texture, and the peanuts helped absorb the sugar of the soup and balance out the sweetness.
I can't comment on how authentic Putien is, as I've never been to Fujian to actually try their food. But the meal was very tasty overall and I enjoyed their use of seaweed to add texture and flavor to almost all their dishes. read more
