It's not what you think it is…read more It's the Cantonese pronounciation of the restaurant 福來居, but to make it more confusing it has another name embedded in as 福來居(牛記)海鮮飯店 (Ngau Kee) Seafood Restaurant. There's something about this place that gives me a "je ne sais quoi" kind of vibe. And that is, there is some intangible quantity and quality, that really makes this place totally awesome, provided you have the right minded set of dining companions with you, who share a love of great no nonsense local food. If you want killer stir fry in the hood kind of eats, with a decent seafood selection that is not entirely off the wall expensive, yet full of local flavor, FLK is a very sound choice. It is within very easy walking distance from Prince Edward MTR station, and is very near the roasties shop famous for roast crispy skin pig (still using charcoal) 永合隆飯店 Wing Hap Lung Restaurant. Started off with a bottle of ice cold Tsing Tao. I forgot how large the bottles in Hong Kong are. The Tsing Tao's in the states at Chinese restaurants are generally dwarf size bottles in comparison. So if you have 4 or more in your party, one bottle is good to start. They chill the glasses, a little extra attention to detail to make your "Cantonese izakaya" experience better. Too many good things on the menu, FLK has this dai pai dong esque vibe, and while it is indoors, the atmosphere and food is close enough that you can have an awesome time in here. 豉油王煎中蝦 - soy sauce supreme (Maggi) pan fried medium prawns. Incredible umami and flavor, but where are the heads?? Even the shells can be eaten! 薑蔥桶蠔 - ginger scallion stir fried oysters. A touch oily, but these are to be expected. Really awesome otherwise! Oysters are either from Canada or United States. 清蒸瓜子斑 - steamed melonseed grouper (wild fish). We arrived close to 8 pm, and by then the seafood selection from the styrofoam tanks were dwindling. At most maybe 3 to 4 kinds of live fish, and this melonseed grouper 瓜子斑 is certainly not a cheap specimen....but cheaper than having a kinki shioyaki at a local Japanese eatery! An extremely solid choice, well executed. The flesh came off the bones with ease. This is why when you travel to HK, eating fresh seafood is a must. It's a far cry from the farmed American fish at Cantonese restaurants in the USA. 上湯蒜子大豆苗 - large pea sprout with garlic in superior broth. Really hard to go wrong with this prep. Stir frying uses more oil, so this approach is healthier. 豉油王炒麵 - soy sauce supreme stir fried noodles. Haha back to stir frying because we want to equalize the guilt! When having seafood like this, ending the meal with a killer plate of carbs is a must, and soy sauce supreme noodles 豉油王炒麵 is a solid choice. It is also perhaps the de facto method of testing wok hay (the other tester dish is beef chow fun, but we're at a seafood restaurant). This rendition is very solid and intense. It's a touch on the dry side which is what I prefer. Oh, I believe they stock Yu Kwen Yick chili sauce, so you can ask for a little bit to make the noodle experience jump a few notches. Fruit platter for dessert (included in the meal), which was an extremely nice touch. Watermelon, pineapple, and papaya. Refreshing even on a mildly chilly January evening. Great food that soothes and satisfies. Even recommended by local celebrity Chef Leung of Hoi King Heen on his FB page!

Moms aren't always right and Kowloon City is known for its Teochew food, but with its wonderfully tender goose slices (although portions are a bit small - those stealthy tofu hunks at the bottom!), Ban Chu Hin is definitely a place that I would recommend.

Ordered: Goose slices - Thinly sliced and has so much flavor. Meat is juicy and has a thin layer of fat. Underneath the goose are marinated tofu. Perfect with a side of rice. Beef Ball Soup - So bouncy! The beef balls almost crunch with every bite. There is so much flavor in it..unlike the frozen ones you get for hot pot. Even the soup itself is packed with meaty flavor and the cabbage inside has soaked up the broth that it is delicious all on its own. Scrambled egg & oysters - Fresh ingredients. The oysters were cleaned correctly - no sand. The mix of scrambled egg and oysters were placed evenly, so that each bite had a little bit of egg and oyster. Almond soup (dessert) - My uncle is diabetic and was able to order a sugar free bowl of almond soup. The sugar one we had was delicious. Smooth and silky. Clean, great service and open late (22:00?).

Fatty char siu: I thought this was the best dish that I have had in this restaurant. The fat isn't hard which means it will melt when it goes straight into your mouth. Roast goose: This was pretty good too. I liked the flavor of the skin and the meat. Sweet and sour pork on rice: This was a great dish. The pork seems fresh and the sauce isn't too sweet or too sour. They have achieved the balance. DINNER... We ordered most of the same things, but I will only describe the new dishes. Scrambled eggs with shrimp: This was very nice. I think this place adds butter or milk to their eggs. Couldn't stop eating this dish. Tofu with fish: I wasn't really a fan of this dish. The texture as well as the flavor of the fish seemed off. I liked the tofu though. Overall, I think this place is worthy of my services. I'll be back.

The meal was a whole order of magnitude more excellent than what we expected. We had (our usual) wonton soup, but also fish congee, beef noodle (without soup), spicy pork noodle (no soup), hot almond pudding and cold mango/sago pudding. We had the usual choi sum (needed a few minutes more on the stove). We also had sweet and sour pork which I dreaded given how disgusting this dish generally is in the US. All I can say is that we inhaled all this food. Amazingly the sweet and sour pork was a standout for me. If you decide to try this restaurant you should know it is extremely popular and extremely noisy. The Cantonese do consider noise to be a vital component of enjoying a great meal, and the noise level matched the wonderful cuisine. Also, you are almost going to be the only non-Chinese diners at Praise Noodle, unless my wife and I happen to be in attendance. See you there!

Since we had no idea which one of these Chiu Chow places are good, our friend's recommendation will be for us to try and see! The interior is a throw back to the late 60's 70's decor, very clean and neat, with bright lights and also booth seatings. Sliced Chicken with Szechuen Peppercorn: Succulent slices of boneless chicken fried to perfection and then tossed in a peppery sauce! The fried green leaves give the dish the authentic flavour! The directions to get to the boat where we would be eating was both vague and intriguing. The taxi / uber will drop you off at Typhoon Shelter Causeway. When we got there no one else was there but it got busier. If you book out the entire boat / have a large enough party...you will not have to share the boat. Amazing view of Victoria Bay and the neon lights and skyscrapers. Very little rockiness from the water. The most difficult part was using the bathroom & having to scoop water from the bay to force flush the toilet. My brother came over to make sure I didn't fall out of the window & my kids were laughing. 5/5 hilarious core moment 1) Steamed prawns and snails: prawns were perfectly cooked and lightly seasoned. Snails just seemed boiled and had no seasoning; pass. 2) Gizzards & cold chicken appetizer: tasty but nothing to write home to. 3) Roast Duck: Skin was not crisp but the flavor was there. 4) Garlic clams: savory, flavorful, tender and fresh! 5) Razor clams with glass noodles: loads of garlic, pre-scooped out clams and savory noodles. My favorite dish. 6) Chow mein: a wonderful surprise to what I thought would just be filler for the kids. So flavorful, generously portioned, and nice chewy noodles 7) Lobster & noodles: sauce translated to "cheesy" but did not taste like cheese, was a thick almost cream sauce. Came with cracker / claws which was great for the kids. Meaty lobster, perfectly cooked. 8) River shrimp: translates to "pee shrimp" and were cut down the middle to get the shrimp out. These were my husband's favorite. A mix of lobster x shrimp that was the size of my 10 y/o's face. 9) Garlic fried crab: crunchy garlic bits were the best, I had a hard time eating the crab even with the cracker / claws to help. 10/10 would recommend. One of a kind experience!!

This restaurant is a bit out of the way and the kind of place you wouldn't know about unless you knew a local. I learned of this spot from my aunt who lives in HK and has brought me here for dinner a couple times. The storefront does not have an English name so you will need to look for the Chinese title. Look for a red color sign. The restaurant interior has a feel of a hole in the wall. When you enter, grab a table if there is one open. Though be forewarned that you might need to share it if the restaurant fills up. It is best to get in early (5-ish) before the crowd at dinner time. There isn't an English menu, so it helps if you come here with a Chinese speaker. But there are menu item photos plastered over the wall so you could simply point to what you want here. The signature menu item here are their dan dan noodles. They are also a very good deal since it is just HK$24. This dish is spicy, though you can ask for a less spicy version but it is a bit watered down in flavor. On my recent trip, I had a few other items in addition to the dan dan noodles and all four of them were great. They have this fried fish appetizer which are crunchy that I couldn't get enough of. Then there were the two Sichuanese standards, chili green beans with ground beef and ma po tofu. The green beans were nice and crisp with plenty of garlic and chili pepper. The ma po tofu was silky and comforting. They also have xiaolongbao here which are HK$50 for an order of 8. For a restaurant that does not specialize in Shanghai cuisine, I thought these were quite good. Not the best I have had, but solid. The service is great here. And the chef was quite accommodating despite all of the special requests we had.
