Mixed seafood fried "la mein" noodles
Umesh T.

Located on the basement of the Times Square building, the restaurant was bustling with life --- smartly dressed professionals in their business attire probably catching a quick luncheon or a working lunch. There were a smattering of the non-professionals --- shoppers and tourists --- but we were outnumbered during this hour. There was a small line outside but I was lucky since I was coming in as a solitary diner: I had zero wait as I took the offer to be seated at a bar-stool high-seating section (more like sitting at a bar; except, this was not a bar). I started out with the Pork and Chives dumplings. It took a while to arrive but when they did, there were juicy, piping-hot, and delicious. I presume they came straight out of the steamer. Nothing like piping hot food on a cool chilly winter's day. Although delicious on it's own, don't miss out on adding the slivers of ginger and soy-sauce with every bite of this lip-smacking dish. For the main meal, I decided on the mixed seafood la-mein noodles. The noodles were of the thickness and consistency I love in chow-mein. It was covered in a layer of sauce, sprouts, and mushroom - probably Enoki and Shiitake mushrooms. The seafood in it -- shrimp, baby scallops, and salmon (if I remember correctly) -- was very fresh and 'popped'. The noodles were a little on the greasy side which made me wonder if it was made to cater to tourists; after hearing on numerous occasion how authentic Chinese cuisine (which province? no idea) is low on oil and grease. Nonetheless it was delicious! The service was a little lacking as I had to try and wave down a server to get their attention, and succeeded only on my third or fourth try. But it wasn't too bad as they were really busy, and the food more than made up for it. I was surprised to find that it is a sister concern to the Crystal Jade Jiang Nan at the Embarcadero in San Francisco; I should try this one for comparison's sake, but it seems to be priced higher than it's Hong Kong cousin.

We often think Hong Kong is all about Cantonese food, but it's not just that, in the 1940s, during the civil war, many wealthy Shanghainese moved to Hong Kong. Think the BAFTamA 2001 movie "In the mood for love," which happens to be my favorite love story of all time, it had a lot of people speaking Shanghainese. That's the number one thing one must remember in looking for good Shanghai food. Don't just go to Shanghai, go to Hong Kong. My last meal in Mainland today was with my uncle and aunt, who are from Shanghai and was in town for the Chinese New Year, suitably we ate Dim Sum and then chitchatted about Xiang Long Bao, aka Shanghai dumplings. Nanxiang is still good, my aunt speaks with a strong Shanghai accent, and there are others that local elderly go, but by and large, Shanghai has become a super wealthy people's playground, and for that matter, I had not returned in 10 years, though I spent many summer holidays there as a child. All that talk got me thinking to take my bet at this nearby Shanghai dumpling house. It has two things, dumplings, and hand made noodles, which made me remember those days of visiting Xi'an. The wait was 15-20 minutes, not to bad considering it's a Saturday evening. Waited a bit before my number is called. During the time while standing outside and waiting, I had studied up the menu and knew the basics, Shanghai dumplings and Sichuan hand made noodles, with some Northern pancakes. Food arrived within 10 minutes. Very efficient. Price is comparable to what you'd expect to pay in the U.S., which by Hong Kong standard, is super cheap and affordable. The noodles are very chewy and super tasty, the broth very creamy like you'd expect a pork flavored ramen broth would be, the Shanghai dumplings were the best I'd had this trip, including the times I ate at Shanghainese restaurants in China. A keeper.

Service was very slow, flood came out just as slow. Some items were excellent like the wonton noodle soup and the xiao long bao. The crispy rice was good except for the tomato soup that accompanied it was quite weird. Not sure we will return.

pan fried XLB 3.5/5

3/5 stars Eh, my expectation for this place was super high. I expected so much more, but was a bit disappointed. Ordered: 1) XLB: 3/5 The skins were so thin--we tried to pick them up carefully, but 75% of them teared before they went into our mouths. 2) Spicy peanut sauce noodles: 3.5/5 This was good, but a bit spicy for my palate (I don't normally eat spicy food) 3) Pancake: 2/5 yuck 4) Pan fried XLB: 3.5/5 Standard and good. I get annoyed of HK custom..the check is returned to you and your waiter stands right there waiting for you to sign it...

It was not the worst food I ever had but it wasn't good. As others have noted, the service was poor. Maybe I ordered wrong, but the food was mediocre at best. I got the Ma Po Bean Curd, which to my dismay seemed to have some type of minced meat in it even though it didn't look like it did (or mention that on the menu). Not being one to send food back (not that anyone came to ask me how it was anyway--I had to flag someone down just pay), especially when it's my fault for not double checking, I ate it and tried to pick around the meat. Overall I definitely wouldn't go back. I came out and saw a deli place across the hall for 1/2 the price with better looking food. My fault for stopping the first place I saw. If you do go, make sure to clearly CONFIRM if something is vegetarian (or any other dietary restriction); don't expect attentive service and be ready to really flag someone down when you want something; and know that they will bring you a tea--regardless of weather you order it and will leave it before you have a chance to say anything--and be prepared to pay for it in addition to the 10% service charge, bc they will charge you for it. The drink is not super expensive, but I find being charged for something I didn't ask for pretty annoying on principle.

I had a good experience here. Attentive service where they refilled our teas and came by to make sure our food came out right. XLB was juicy and skin was thin. They do have service charge and also $6 per head for tea.

4 colour 小龍包!!

I come here whenever I go to Causeway Bay and I love all their dishes! Very similar to Ding Tai Fung! Their soup dumplings (小龍包)are super yummy, my favourite is the truffle one. Their hand made noodles are also a must try! Very tangy and flavorful. Service is just like any other restaurant in HK, quick and efficient. Gets really packed during lunch and dinner time though, so be prepared to wait in line!

Very delicious Shanghainese food. The Xiao Long Bao and the noodles are the best I've ever tasted.

Yum.

If you are near here, eat here!…read more We were the only westerners in the restaurant, which gives a good hint about local quality. The menu had a LOT of items, each numbered and with short descriptions in English. Everything was, as you'd expect, served family style. We had the hot and sour soup, some veggie dumplings, shredded beef with vegetables, shrimp in chili sauce, all served with tea. Each was fantastic! Seriously. Not good. Not great. Fantastic! There was enough soup for four, which magically disappeared from our table for two. We cleaned every plate, and not because the servings were anything short of generous. The service was also great, while a bit hovering as they seemed worried about how we might handle everything. For one, I was happy they noticed us struggling while making a mess trying to shell the shrimp, bringing us a knife and fork (and extra wet-wipes). Interesting to me, this was the first time we each had two sets of chopsticks. Thankfully, the internet quickly taught us that one set was for serving ourselves from the community plates, and the other for eating. Don't use the eating pair for serving or the serving pair for eating -- it is bad form, especially with COVID being so huge here. Note: they are happy to bring serving spoons, forks and knives if you ask (or appear hopeless). My other mistake, in addition to the shrimp peeling fiasco, was not tipping. When I saw the 10% service fee, and knowing tipping is totally optional and not expected in Hong Kong (and most of SE Asia), I still should have left a bit more, especially considering how helpful they were.

Review #300 is dedicated to a very special dish - The Drunken Squab…read more "Drunken" poultry is a famous Shanghainese delicacy that is often served as a cold appetizer. Drunken chicken is the most popular dish and is readily available even in the US, especially in areas like the SGV. Drunken squab is a lot more difficult to find in the US. Heck... just any good and fresh (not frozen) squab is hard enough to find in the US. Despite its name, this dish won't make you drunk, as the proper way of preparing it is to boil the wine first before using it as a marinade so that all the alcohol is evaporated, and the wine is properly reduced. Also, boiling the wine with some coarse sea salt and spices greatly enhances its flavor. The drunken squab here at Wu Kong was the best one that I have ever had. Period. The squab itself was fresh and the meat was flavorful. It was perfectly cooked so that the meat was tender. It was marinated perfectly so that the wine enhanced the natural flavor of the meat rather than overwhelming it. The wine was high quality premium stuff - very smooth and gentle to the palate -- and it was reduced properly to produce a rich flavor. This is a squab lover's dream come true. Before I forget... Everything else that we ordered were good. XLB's - They had the largest juice pockets of any XLB's that I've ever had. Each one contained at least one to two large soup spoonfuls of juices. The best way to eat them is to wait for it to cool down a bit (so you won't burn your tongue) and eat it in one bite. If you must take more than one bite, eat it over a small bowl so you won't lose those yummy and precious juices. Fried Dumplings - Also very very juicy. Be careful when you bite into it so that the juices don't squirt out. Scallion Pancakes - They were quite unique and were shaped like a donut rather than the thin pancake style generally found in the US. They were absolutely yummy, pan-fried to golden brown on the outside, moist and slightly chewy inside. Amazing. Cold Noodles - A great idea on a hot summer day! It was beautifully presented with 3 types of shredded meat on top and came with a nice setting of sauces, which included chili paste, a sweet soy sauce, peanut sauce, sesame oil, etc. Shanghainese Chili Stir Fry - Sweet and mildly spicy hot, this could be served with noodles, steamed rice, steamed buns (man tow) or scallion pancakes. Absolutely yummy and authentically Shanghainese! This place is quite expensive ($$$) but I assure you that it's worth every penny. If you decide to open up your wallet and spoil yourself with some of the best Shanghainese cuisine in the World, then this is the place. A solid 5-star experience, even by Hong Kong's high standard of Asian cuisine.

The pancake is of the dry and thin type ... much better than what you will find at Peking Garden and a little bit less authentic compared to those in spring deer restaurant in TST. *Hairy crab set dinner - very very delicious. Every dish is covered with a lot of 蟹粉! *Fried rice with egg white, conpoy and Chinese kale - delicate and balanced. Just the right amount of everything. they peeled off the "skin" of the Chinese kale so everything feels good and chewable in your mouth!!! In addition to having a strong local following, it is also conveniently located near the F1 exit on the MTR in Causeway Bay. I am 100% in favor of any major city offering a late night Shanghainese option, let alone one that is open at all hours. While the awning looks like it would be an entrance to a proper restaurant, this is like any typical noodle shop in HK: small, cramped, and a liability for 3 or more people at a time. I love that the staff is constantly doing food prep which makes sense if they're feeding people non-stop at all hours. The smell of the cooking makes me appreciate the family business feel of the place. Overall, I like the food. It reminds me a lot of the NYC Chinatown Shanghainese scene, which is also good, but sometimes tastes like Shanghainese food if it were cooked by Canto folks. This is really not that different since it doesn't really remind me of the flavors that one would get in Shanghai (#2). That doesn't make the food worse, but it takes a slight ding on the authenticity bit. I still am enamored with the concept of this place. They offer a lot of my go-to items: salty / sweet soymilk (咸和甜豆漿), stuffed rice sticky rolls (粢飯), lion's head meatball (獅子頭), vegetable rice (菜飯), dan dan noodles (擔擔麵) and dumpling classics like soup dumplings (小籠包) and shengjian pan fried buns (生煎包). The former are frequent items for practically diners here (especially the salty soymilk with fried bread sticks), but the latter two are a tough sell for me. It's not that I don't love the meat or broth in the XLB or SJB, but that it's just a little too doughy for my tastes. I was pleasantly surprised with their mackeral noodle soup (醺魚上海麵), which was hearty and simple. I think the service pulls no punches. They're not the warmest folks, but hardly anyone is here for the service. One can only rock Canto fare for so long, so having a Shanghainese inspired spot that is open all day and night is a concept I'm happy to support. ____________ (#1) At least in Causeway Bay.
