We originally wanted to eat at Maxim Palace for Dim Sum lunch! Unfortunately the one day we wanted to on our 3 day trip, Maxim Palace had a private event at the Central location!
We instead came to this location for dinner time since we were in the area. We went for the set dinner menu for 4 people, which was $768hkd (~$100usd).
It was a decent amount of food. It came with
- bbq pork and roasted duck pieces
- thick conpoy vegetables with crab meat
- sautéed prawns and zucchini with candied walnuts
- sweet and sour pork with pineapple
- and steamed grouper with mushroom flower
Perhaps because we had bbq and roasted goose that knocked it out of the park the night before, we weren't too impressed by the roasted duck/pork. The "sautéed prawns" and sweet and sour pork were just okay as well. It was minimal meat in the sweet and sour pork fried pieces, and the sautéed prawns were small shrimps with a starchy sauce that lacked flavor.
The crab meat soup was yummy and tasted well, and the grouper was the group's overall favorite. Great flavor and marinade.
The service was okay overall. No one was rude to us as tourists. It definitely helped that someone in our group spoke Mandarin, but even then there was a staff member who only spoke Cantonese, so they got another member to take our order.
Since we are Americans, we requested 4 bowls of rice - this took a long time to come out and we even requested it with another staff member. We got 2 rice bowls, but had to remind them we requested 4 (they added a total of 4 rice bowls to the bill). By the time we got all 4 rices, we were nearly done with all the food. Crazy that it was also ~$3usd for each rice bowl! I thought that was only American overpriced standards, apparently they do it here too.
I wonder if the experience and food would have been better had we eaten dim sum here, but who knows. I wouldn't recommend highly Maxim Palace for dinner. read more
