Shu Mai combo
Jen H.

Definitely not the best dim sum HK has to offer by any stretch of the imagination but Canton's is one of the few places that's open early (8am) on a weekday morning. The shu mais are decently plump and tasty. The Cheung fen has a nice delicate texture. The bean curd wrap on the other hand is pretty sad- lacks flavor and is on the dry side. Service is nothing to write home about (but then again, you don't come to places like this for the service). Had to wait a bit (15-20 min?) for the food even though it was an empty weekday morning.

While the food here is pretty good, it didn't blow me away at all. If this restaurant were in the U.S. then it would get 4 stars but there are just so many good and cheap dim sum places right around the corner. The prices here aren't that cheap in comparison to the nearby restaurants. It's not a bad option by any means but nothing really stands out as exceptional here, you can find better close by.

Menu

There was a mandatory tea that they did not serve to me. Paid $10 for something i did not drink.

Nothing opens early in Hong Kong! Luckily, we found this place while walking around! The interior is very nice and clean. Menu on the outside so you can see offerings. They have dim sum, noodle, and rice dishes as well as lots of side dishes. I had dim sum and it was good, light and tasty! Also got a fish ball noodle soup that was good. 5 dishes cost 17800 Hong Kong dollar.

Came across this corner dim sum shop while walking through apliu flea market in prince Edward stop on the MTR. They had seats and it seemed crowded with locals. Food is good esp the crispy shrimp rice roll. Their dumplings are huge such as ha-gao (shrimp) and fun-gor (water chestnut). Even the chicken feet tastes like how it was 30-40yrs ago. The down side is you will be battling the gnats and flies as they swarm over your food. They charge for tea but no service charge.

We met friends for dinner and actually went to the wrong restaurant, for there is another Star of Canton just up the street at I Square too and we went there by accident. This restaurant has an expansive and striking view of the harbor, high ceilings, big glassy chandeliers and is very spacious. There is a stage and so much room that it seems like the appropriate spot to have a banquet or wedding. It is one of those large Chinese restaurants that serves a lot of people and thus the soft goods (carpet, chairs, linens, etc) seem warn and need updating. Although I did not do the ordering and did not pay the bill, in addition to special orders of hairy crabs at an additional cost, we had a set dinner with like 7 courses for around $400HKD (which seemed like a great value, knowing all the delicious food we had). The set included their highlighted dish of Braised Whole Japanese Oma Abalone, in addition to marinated sea cucumbers, shrimp, sticky rice, a great soup with bean curd on top and although small and at the very end, a seasame rice ball that was really spectacular & a party in your mouth. Found in 1998, Star of Canton insists the tradition of the canton dishes with less oil, less salt, no MSG and no artificial colour. I like that and it is a niche in a sea of Chinese restaurant options. We had a good experience and liked the ambiance of the place, so we would reccomend and absolutely go back.

The dishes I must order here are their cheesy lobster with longevity noodles and their pepper salt pissing shrimp. Oh so good. My mouth is watering now just writing about it! And that night I went they also had razor clams as well! Yum! Service was great. The people were really friendly. The restaurant was busy on a weeknight as well. It's easy to find, near Jordan station located inside a plaza. Just take the elevator 7/F I think? and it'll take you straight there. Most of all their prices are very reasonable! You can't get this quality and taste for this price anywhere else; that's why I keep coming back. Writing this review makes me happy because I can relive this meal. :-)

We did not know it was a 2 star Michelin restaurant, and I was a bit apprehensive at the beginning, because we did not want to spend too much money on food on this trip. Upon our request, we were seated right in front of the Harbour view and were able to see the light show that start around 8pm. The most beautiful view of HK at night! We opted not to order the duck, which needs to be ordered 24 hour in advance and although I am sure quite delicious is quite pricy (HK$1,438+10%). Reservation in this place is a must! Highlights were the Wok-fried Wagyu with Green Peppers, Mushrooms and Garlic, Wok-seared Chicken Fillet with Lemon Sauce The server was so kind as to give us half servings so we could "sample" some of the more expensive items, add fried rice for substitution with the meat dishes and free desert. This flexibility in providing half portion and substitution is something i've rarely experience in a Michelin restaurant. Overall, we payed $US240 (1,900 Hong Kong Dollar) which includes the 10% service charge for two people for a michelin 2 star restaurant for an unforgettable meal! If I return to HK, I will definitely come back and try their dim sum.
