It looked more like a take out kind of place but we saw tables in the back and started to enter the shop, but the floor was so greasy, we were seriously thinking about making a 180° and skip this place. I don't know if it was the look on our faces or that we were a bit better dressed then the uncles in their white tanks with legs propped up on stools or what, but the kind lady proprietor suggested we eat at their "nicer atmosphere" dining room a few doors down. The dining room greeted us with nice A/C and floors our shoes had better grip on. The food is ordered here and they will prepare the soup, noodles, drinks, etc. but all the siu mei still comes over from the other shop. The roasted meats we're tender and tasty, no lie. I'd say even skip all those starchy fillers and go straight for the roasted proteins. The portions here are very generous and we felt a little guilty leaving some pieces uneaten. Hong Kong definitely has no shortage of siu me shops and I'm glad the tasties they offer remain classic and unchanged. Looking forward to finding new gems.

I've tried the three treasures one, the 崩沙腩 kind (the one that was listed first in their beef brisket descriptions that apparently sells out really fast), and the fingertip brisket one, and they have all been good. I especially liked the 崩沙腩, but you won't like it if you prefer your beef to be very lean. All the beef has been super tender and flavorful. The intestine in the three treasures one was too chewy, so I prefer going for just brisket. You get to pick from a few different types of noodles but those seem pretty standard and don't seem to be made in house. I always go for the wider egg noodles if you're looking for a recommendation. All the noodles come with scallion and a few chunks of turnip, so I also recommend ordering their seasonal vegetable dish if you want some greens. Service-wise it's overall very standard for HK. Apart from the noodles, the drinks are also all standard and good, but everything is on the pricier side (~10+ HKD for a drink if you ordered a bowl of noodles, ~70-93 HKD per bowl). Compared to Sister Wah around the corner this place's beef is more tender and the broth more unique, and it's also Michelin recommended. The lines here tend to be smaller, too, and the portions reasonable and much larger than Kau Kee's. No clue why this place isn't just as popular as those, but I'm more than happy to spend less time waiting in line.

That's good enough visual for me to wander into this restaurant specializing in jook (congee). The beef jook was very tasty and filling. The beef chunks were thin and tender, and the jook consistency was smooth and thick. It's not the ideal breakfast for a warm and humid October morning, but the fresh cold soy milk was mildly sweet and refreshing to help balance the temperature. On the side, I had the rice noodle-wrapped fried doughnut. Drizzled with a bit of soy sauce, it was a little on the salty side. However, the rice noodle had good texture (not too sticky or chewy) and the fried doughnut was chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Overall everything tasted very fresh and delicious! This shop may be small, but service was quick and friendly. Despite a line, you'll be seated within a few minutes. This is a great place in Mong Kok for a satisfying meal for under $40 HKD.

My local friend brought me here while we were in the Mongkok area and this is just a little mom and pop shop on the street. I had the sliced pork jook and it was really nice on the palate, not overly salty as some places would make it. The taste of the pork was clean and flavorful and came through instead of being hidden by white pepper and salt. The fried donut wrapped in rice noodle was among one of the best that I've ever had. The donut was lightly crispy with a chewy center. The rice noodle was warm and embraced the donut. The sweet soy sauce soaked in nicely and made every bite super tasty and savory.

The location is quite good in the quieter area of the Minden Avenue. The place is bright with at big window front. The setting is simple and rustic. Service is efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. They have a decent drinks list including sochu, beers and different mixed drinks. The food menu is extensive including some really good salads as well as rice and noodle dishes. The salads are fresh and crisp, the dressings tasty not overpowering. I love their avocado and their potato salad! Their uni rice is amazing, the spicy ramen as well! If you like plain rice to go with your meal, they use rice from Japan cooked to perfection! The star here of course is the meat especially the beef. The different cuts either come from the US or Japan. You get them marinated or en nature. The quality of all cuts is superb. My favorites include the Angel karubi, Diamond Karubi, seared beef on uni and the wagyu ribeye. The ribeye you have to order in advance and they put on a good show presenting this cut. A few waiters will loudly introduce this when delivering to your table and they will teach you some Japanese words to loudly response. As many guests order this, the restaurant will not be quiet at any time making a buzzing, fun atmosphere. Depending on the cuts you order, they will cook the beef to perfection for you at the table. Imho this restaurant is not overly expensive. You can spend below HK$ 200 per head including drinks if you don't go for the best cuts. Even if you do that you end up with around HK$ 400 per head which is worth every penny. I'm a huge fan of this place.

I couldn't even finish it. This restaurant is always busy. We debated whether to eat here or at another nearby restaurant that was practically empty, but we made the right choice. During our short stay, we came here twice for dinner and once for breakfast. That said, knowing what to order makes all the difference. The table next to us at breakfast ordered a dish that looked amazing, but I couldn't find it anywhere on the menu. Maybe it was a secret menu item, or perhaps you have to be a local to know about it. One thing to note: Yelp isn't always the most reliable source for Hong Kong restaurants since many listings and reviews can be quite dated. Google Reviews tends to be more accurate, but it's still worth double-checking because restaurants frequently change ownership, relocate, or close. Thanks to Jando (former HK CM) for adding this spot to the Yelp map. I came across it there and immediately recognized it! Of course, always carry cash. This place accepts WeChat as payment.

The English name, Yung's Tangerine Peel Roast Goose Restaurant, might seem strange to most, but it is a literal translation of the Chinese name: 榕哥陳皮燒鵝. My experience was like many others: a packed house full of hungry locals shooting for an excellent rendition of traditional Cantonese roasted meats. Located on Lockhart Rd, this Yung Gor version is semi-large but fully packed during prime hours. Table sharing is highly likely in small groups, and the service works quickly to get orders started. The menu is in both Chinese and English and features a nice selection of meal sets to take the guesswork out of ordering. The prices at 50-68HKD seems reasonable but for folks fixated on the traditional bbq will pay anywhere from $55-180 depending on the order. I chose a 3 meat platter consisting of roasted siu yuk pork, char siu bbq pork, and roasted goose (燒肉叉燒燒鵝). The roasted goose was as excellent as advertised, juicy and tender all throughout. The char siu bbq pork was sweet enough to be a star on its own but the siu yuk roasted pork belly stole the show. The crispy skin was some of the best I've ever had. It was wonderfully fatty and went so well with the accompanying mustard condiment. I washed it all down with a iced lemon tea but couldn't help but think about the amazing platter I had. While I've heard excellent things about their Yau Ma Tei location, I am convinced Wan Chai really is worthy of a goose chase throughout the neighborhood. I am already plotting my next trip back and will absolutely include this place as a part of my must-eat rotation.

I'm lucky or an unpunctual eater or very late to the Kau Kee club as I've never waited in a line. Know that long queues have been said to be the welcome. The first time I visited was thanks to its Michelin recommended status. At the time of writing this review it has since been awarded the Bib Gourmand. The experience was quintessentially Asia. The two of us sardined on a table with a family of four who were either local or no stranger to the land and culture. Normally patrons respectfully dine quickly in silence and leave. This group was indeed quick with typical stoic expressions but also gifted us a smidge of their efforts when looking up from their bowls for the slightest seconds, pointing at their drinks: cokes with lemons, wordlessly suggesting we try some and gesturing their hands to show us how to. Lemon first on the ice, coke poured on. Of course we copied and it was the most extravagant part of our meal. ;)
