My friend and I came here on the day we were leaving Hong Kong for Tokyo. We both love beef brisket and figured we needed to get some before we left. We walked past Yuen Kee several times since our hotel was on Kimberley Road.
When you walk by you can see beef brisket in the window stewing in a huge pot and roasted items.
This is one of the few places that is open pretty early in the area. We came in and sat down. Asked the waitress what was good to get and she said noodles. Well we should've just listened and only ordered noodles. We stupidly ordered wonton noodles, cuttlefish ball noodles, milk teas, veggies and a 3 meat combo platter which included beef brisket, tripe and tendon. We ordered the 3 meat combo thinking it would be huge since it cost $148HKD which translates to about $21USD. That was our mistake, should've listened to the lady and only order noodles.
The cuttlefish ball noodle soup was standard. The Veggies were drenched in oyster sauce which was fantastic. The 3 meat combo, well it looked really big in the picture, but in reality it was probably 2 noodles portion of meat. So instead spending probably $12USD on the same portion of meat that would have come with noodles we spent $21USD...
The beef brisket, the reason we came here was egh... It's quite possible they gave us old beef brisket or just crappy beef brisket. We expected to have the skin and tendon and all that other chewy goodness but that's not what we got. Granted my Cantonese accent is not the best, but when I say 牛腩, I'm pretty sure it cannot be mistaken for something else.
I suggest only ordering stuff under $100HKD unless you want to regret it like my friend and myself and also take advantage of their breakfast menu. Saw the breakfast items in the tables next to us and was quite intrigued. read more
