Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

We got here fairly early, so we didn't have to wait for a table. Service was as expected - quick, efficient, and no nonsense. A tell-tale sign of a good HK cafe. The food just hit the spot for me, bringing me right back to my childhood memories of eating this on weekend mornings at our local HK cafe. Note that they don't accept foreign credit cards, so be prepared with cash, Octopus, or Alipay.

Along a small side street, we managed to find some "parking" for our bikes but were told by the shop staff to not block the entrance. The shop was continuously busy, with a steady flow of people coming in and out, even mid-afternoon. One step inside and it feels like you've been transported to old HK. The interior has been well preserved, with the vintage yet familiar white and green floor tiling, old wall fans in each corner, and handwritten menus framed on the shop walls. It is truly a rare gem that must be protected at all costs! When it comes to ordering, you better be familiar with the HK chachaanteng classics - iced milk tea or lemon tea, pineapple bun with butter, french toast, or how about macaroni with ham? There didn't seem to be an English menu available, so we had to decipher the Chinese menu on the walls to our best ability. 1. Pineapple bun with butter: good carb-loaded snack, but didn't quite hit the spot for the best boluo yau 菠蘿油. 2. Macaroni soup with beef: might not look like mucj but tastes soo good! It came out steaming hot with tender slices of beef. It healed my soul. 3. Scrambled egg and corned beef sandwich: holy moly, this is the endgame sandwich. Who would've expected it'd be here in Sheung Shui!? It tastes like heaven in your mouth, well-flavored egg and beef sitting in between slices of buttered bread. Mmmm! 4. Cold lemon tea: a classic drink but the tea was not as strong as I'd hope; it was a bit diluted. The staff were super friendly and not pushy at all (like at other CCTs in HK). One of the ladies even complimented me on my photo of the pineapple bun, haha. I will definitely return to try other items on the menu and go for the milk tea next time!

This location has a little bakery on the outside that sells egg tarts and typical bakery food. On weekend mornings, you'll see a long line at the bakery section because the pastries taste great and are really affordable - hk$7 for a pineapple bun and hk$10 for a pineapple bun with a slab of butter, which is a hk staple. They also sell Mexican custard buns, which I realized are really popular at these chain hk cafes, but I've never tried them. I did try the egg tarts here for just hk$6. They're so good! Flaky just the way I like it, but not as sweet as nyc egg tarts. Mind you, these bakery items are available not only as to go orders but to stay orders. They make great breakfast food or even an afternoon snack. The first time I ate here was for breakfast and I ordered one of those set meals. I got the beef with pasta in tomato soup. The set included a hot drink and two buns with egg and ham. The meal wasn't that memorable but I came back for dinner cause the food pics looked so good. I love hk baked minced beef over rice/spaghetti, and the ones here are unbelievably good. I love how perfect the egg they add on top looks and it's runny! I'm not a big eater but I'm usually able to finish the whole dish because that's just how tasty it is. I've also had their soup noodles here before and the portion is huge. Honestly, you won't regret coming here. There's a wide range of items on the menu to suit everyone's tastes and budget.
