On one of the last few days in Hong Kong, we were looking for a new place to have a Cantonese style breakfast and stumbled upon Sun Fat Jook Deem (SFJD).
This is a hole-in-the-wall establishment that was very intimidating at first. It wasn't appealing from the outside but when we noticed how busy and popular this was with the locals, we decided to give this place a try..
For our party of 6, we snugly squeezed into a small round table where the waitress semi barks at you asking what you'd like to order.
I opted for TANG JAI JOOK (fisherman's congee). But when eating with foodies, it doesn't stop there. We also had sides of plain cheung funn, plain joong (glutinous rice) and ngau lei sou (deep fried bread).
The food was above average. My bowl of jook had raw meat on the bottom but when adding scalding rice soup inside and stirring, the meat cooked instantly. Adding some white pepper elevated the flavor. I tried the sides and they were really good. The deep fried bread wasn't greasy and as expected, the joong was rich and heavy. Nonetheless, tasty.
Our food came out within several minutes. Service here is super fast. Utensils and condiments are on the table so you eat quickly with convenience. Perhaps a business strategy to turnover the tables faster?
Breakfast is not complete if you don't have soybean milk. Our group likes their soybean milk warm but I ordered mine cold. It was very refreshing with a subtle sweetness.that completed my Hong Kong style breakfast.
Perhaps the best part of the meal? The cost. A bowl of jook is approximately HK$20-$25 (US$2.55 to $3.20). Such a great deal that doesn't make a dent in your wallet.
If you decide to come to SFJD, remind yourself it's about the food. Not the ambiance nor the decor. Quick, good quality and great value. read more
