First time visiting after the remodel and... OMG.. this place is AWESOMMMMEEE!!! They've added a ton of gaming areas (which was desperately needed) and made them look medieval (bonus points for creativity!). I love that we can come and play demo games to try them out before buying. Their "pub food" is delicious (had the fries, mozzarella sticks, dragon droppings, jalapeno poppers) and drink list has gotten larger. The staff is always super friendly and they have a good selection of games for purchase too. Prices are comparable to online, so I prefer to buy my games here to support my local business!! read more

Matt deserves all the praise in the world for putting together a shop that can compete with the likes of Mox Boarding House due to his excellent customer service and extremely personable attitude towards his customers. It's got a lot more of a mom and pop feel than a place like Mox, but don't let that fool you. This place is a series board game store - take it from somebody who owns nearly 700 games. If he doesn't have what I'm looking for, he'll order it. But if it's a new release or a favored classic, he's generally got it. The atmosphere is fantastic. The amount of time and craftsmanship that went into his hobbit hovel/tavern theme is an indication of a true work of passion. If you want to sit down to just play a few games, he's got over 100 opened games to choose from that you can just grab and play. He won't make you buy anything. That's the difference between Zulu's and some other retail shops. Zulu's is about the gaming community. The staff is helpful and informative. The owner's demeanor clearly rubs off on them as they are caring and charitable (several times I've seen them give people things for free if it is a small purchase). The food, while basic, is actually surprisingly good. Whenever I'm planning to be there more than an hour, I always grab a bite to eat. From burgers and salads, to side dishes like fries, tots, or hummus - there's healthy choices, hearty choices, and everything is full of flavor. I've become a regular at Zulu's and it's become my primary source of board game purchases. Due to my interest in promoting the hobby and the community, I always buy local and rarely from Amazon or other online retailers unless I truly can't find something. This is a great place. There's a large library of board games to pick up and play. You can also buy boards games and cards at the shop, or pick up some drinks and food. There are regular meetups that happen here, and they are a good way to spend a few hours on a weekend. I can also say that the staff is fantastic. They are outgoing and attentive. Everyone who works there is incredibly friendly and helpful, and they are very knowledgeable about games and eager to recommend wonderful new games based on games you like. Came here for the first time last Thursday. First of all when I heard of a board game bar/ café I was excited but thinking monopoly, rat race, clue ect... this is more of a dungeons and dragons type place. The people all seemed super nice. I played a game called Catan and one other that had pandas in it but cant remember the name. The first game was fun but missing a couple pieces (numbers). I love this place. It has that Green Dragon Inn ambiance and decor, and an authentic 600 year old castle door gracing the main entrance. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to go back since my first visit soon after they opened, so I can not comment on the food or drink available, but the staff and owner are as friendly and welcoming as they come. The themed game rooms were incomplete when I visited, but coming along nicely and I look forward to seeing them when they are done! They also offer to teach games and try to help folks find groups to game with... which is my one complaint when it comes to their competitor MOX (both Ballard and Bellevue). Unless you are there for Magic or something weekly such as D&D, you are on your own. I can't wait to go back to Zulu's and see how it has changed over the past month or two. read more

This place was so cool, they have tons of free board games to play, a great indoor seating area and outdoor seating area with a fireplace. We came here one chilly night and played games with friends by the fire and got yummy appetizers to share. Cons I have come in multiple time when all tables were full and/or reserved and had to leave. This is the worst aspect of this place. Once, I lost my physical seat to a birthday party reservation and, although I had a table, had to leave because there was literally nowhere left to sit down. Plus, there is an entire unused coffee bar in the corner, stacked with boxes, the space for which could be used for seating. Reservations seem disorganized. For example, I recently overheard something about an overbooking. A perpetual reservation was trumped by a pre-existing one, but no one (apparantly) called the usurped party. I feel like this place needs a business minded person to come in and tighten things like this up. Parking is difficult, even on weekends Downstairs smells moldy Employee interactions have been mixed. Sometimes people are very friendly, other times they are aloof. Once, someone seemed to become perturbed when I asked to add jalapenos to a grilled cheese. Really? Pros It has games, for sale and to try Fairly cool owners (I think they're the owners) Staff run MtG classes at local schools Upstairs is nice when there's space Fried food is reasonably tasty, albeit unhealthy. They do have salads, though. All in all A game cafe should make more room for first come/first served seating and be better about actively organizing table reservations. Around the Table and Cafe Mox seem much more accomodating and organized. I hope Zulus gets better once their expansion is complete. Rating may go up at that time. read more

Our friend brought us here to play while we were visiting Seattle. They have a great selection of games to play and a great menu of pub type food with vegetarian options (and vegan cheese!). Really fun board game cafe. They have a great selection of games to try and buy. The staff are friendly and knowledgable. I also like that it's a place I feel comfortable taking my 5 year old to. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is that their food is so-so. my brother and i are very picky eaters. like, VERY picky. my brother also has low blood sugar. one long trip to visit our family later, and we were both very cranky and in-need of food on christmas eve. no one was open, but then we found this place, and oh my god, this is like a DREAM. seriously. the food was incredible, we had the hydra thingies. there are board games everywhere, board games you can test out, theres dice, and everyone is SO nice. you need to come to this amazing absolute wonderland of a place as soon as possible. i live two hours away, and i will be making that trip as often as i can just to come here. absolutely amazing. read more

Been going to Zulus for years and it's always been a great experience. After having tried out several other board game cafes in other cities, I can safely say Zulus is an absolute S-tier. Not only is it my favorite LGS, I can say it's also one of my favorite places to just eat/drink and hang out. The aesthetic is inspired and comfortable, the staff is experienced and clearly knows the nuances of what gives their clientele space and enjoyment. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. Yes I am a gamer, and that is part of the charm. But it goes well beyond that, the reasons I love Zulu's are: 1. They change the menu and make things better all the time. It is bar type food, but I consider it upscale bar type food, well thought out and good tasting. 2. They use local sources for things like beer, the bread for the sandwiches, and probably more. Those are just the two things I know about. 3. The owner is very involved in the business. I have been there quite a few times, and the owner is always there working, talking to people, interacting with his employees. 4. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. They found friendly geeky people to work there. 5. Good local craft beers on tap, the owner enjoys a good brew and takes a special interest in finding unique drink to offer. 6. You can drop by, borrow a game, eat and drink and walk out the door for very little cash. 7. Lots of tables to play games at, a good selection of games and cards to buy. It is a great addition to the downtown Bothell area, and I fully support this business. It has a much nicer vibe than most game stores, and the food is way better (and more affordable) than places like Mox - plus they showcase awesome local beers. They have really nice, knowledgeable staff and you can get really good deals on games during their annual sale.
