I really like my dentist in Lafayette, so I feel I am supporting him, and possibly his kid's education when I visit this fine establishment. I actually do really like the place. They've helped me stock up on humorous energy drinks (Duff, Zombie..). Their candy selection is pretty immense and unique. The kids have loads of fun here. They get -1 star for their lack of any real organic candies (they've only had 1 type last visit), or lack of any healthy sugar alternative candies; with stuff like Xylitol or Erythritol... not Splenda, Sacchrine or Aspertame x-P. read more

Candy heaven, for real though. This place is the best. Barrels of penny candy, and a glass case with all my favorite European candies. Yes please. I seriously implore you to find some sweets that you knew as a kid that they do not carry here... just wont happen. they also have an awesome selection of gelato that is pretty well priced. on a hot day gelato is awesome! The only downside is that its expensive. dont go here for run of the mill candy you can get at safeway, it will be twice as expensive, but instead save this place for the special items like the 8oz gummy bear that is bigger than a softball. read more

I LOVE this place! I had some time to kill waiting for a ride in Lafayette. My step-daughter's 6th birthday was coming up and I knew they would have lots of unique things she and her super sweet tooth would like. I didn't realize they weren't quite open for business yet and the door was propped open when I walked in. The staff was busy dealing with a minor operations issue but I didn't get any attitude, as mentioned in previous reviews. A clerk apologized and said that they still had a few minutes before opening, but after the manager checked her watch, she said it was close enough and let me browse early. Sweet! This place has floor to ceiling displays filled with all kinds of confections and novelty. I grabbed a giant Pixy Stix and an awesome flying fairy toy for her, as well as a package of RARE chocolate Twizzlers for a friend & a handful of those super melty chocolate Ice Cubes for myself! This trip set me back about $30 but it WAS $20 just for the toy. I got outta there cheap, considering all of the stuff I put back after coming out of the candy frenzy. If I could dream up a perfect candy store..... Powell's would be it! From the moment I walked in I felt as if I had walked into Willy Wonka's factory and was lost in a dream! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE! The owners and staff are wonderful and helpful! Smiles on their faces and a willingness to help everyone who comes in! The place is spotless and clean and so organized, it's almost like walking into a perfect movie set! It's just amazing to see what they have done! The way this store is layed out showcases one remarkable thing after another....it's just fun to go in and take in all the visuals that are packed into this store. Candy galore and stuff I never knew existed! Old school candy from my childhood was so fun to find everywhere! I didn't even realize some of the candy still existed! My favorite is the theater seats they have in the middle of the store with a flat screen continually playing the original "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"! Movie posters signed from the stars and pics of the "grown up" kids from the film are fun to see! So.......... I would HIGHLY recomend just walking into this place to be able to leave and have a huge smile and to bring back all those wonderful childhood memories we so need to cling on! Sure wished the owner would have greeted us when we first walked in since we were the only ones in store. The friendly staff made up for the owner being so odd. But back to the store. Great selection of items. Very high prices. Be sure to check the expiration dates. Many of the British candy was well pass their expiration date. Quick update since I started to write this review. I would double check as best you can, that the hard candy is not broken and shattered. I purchased a variety of candy and as gifts and upon opening many were shattered and broken. This candy/toy shop is really fun to walk around with tons of things to see! They sell gelatos as well as tons of other trinkets! This place really brings me back to being a kid again with some classic candies to some more exotic weird candies! They also have the old willy wonka movie playing on the side and a bench if you wanted to watch! They also open pretty late and probably one of the few places left opened at night if you are strolling around downtown Lafayette (besides restaurants). Definitely worth checking out! read more

Every child's, chocoholic's and candy-lovers dream come true! located in the heart of Lafayette. A real experience. There's nothing else like it. PROS: overwhelming selection of soft and hard candy, commercial and hand-made chocolates - even some well known (at least to those well traveled) and hard to get UK and European chocolate treats. A great place for browsing and exploring. CONS: the staff... sucks! untrained and unmotivated college-age kids slouching behind the long counter with bored post sugar rush looks on their faces. I take my kids there for some treats (great excuse) about once a week and the staff seems to be getting worse each time. what a shame. Powell's is the kind of place that would thrive if they had some fun, high energy sales staff, someone with personality and passion for the job. Also, the price for some of the imported stuff is exceedingly high. But hey, it's Lafayette and it helps with those New Year's resolutions ;-) read more

If u want to find a great candy shop for very low prices, then don't go to zoonies. They used to be the spot for hanging out and eating delicious treats but not anymore. You may know that in recent years they changed their names from Powell's to zoonies. This change of the name also impacted the environment in the shop and made it seem such a negative place because the letter z is bad. read more

The employee at Zoonie's sits in the back on his computer when customers enter. When asked if they have a specific very popular candy, he says no. After purchasing something different, said candies he claimed the store didn't have were packed into literally 10 tubs seen on the way out of the store. Ever since Powell's opened, I've been going there to get the special treats for my family. My kids are grown up but we all love the assortment of retro-treats and delicious sweets. We also love the gelato! The Creme Brulee is to die for. I haven't been to the Rockridge site yet but will next time I'm in Berkeley. Unlike others, I have found the service to be wonderful. Amazing little candy shop that I've been told has made its way to the shop we visited in Lafayette. We were in the neighborhood for some of my fiance's errands and to also get some pizza at Paxti's, so we followed the sugar trail into Powell's. As mentioned, an amazing selection of new and old school candies. The store manager provided excellent suggestions and extended customer service at its best. The drive from Berkeley proved to be well worth it. She had competitive pricing, gave a few gift certificates for raffle prizes and the entire staff joined in, going on and beyond to make our purchases fun and stay within budget. I went here to do some LMS for Valentine's Day shopping. (LMS is for the people like me who wait till the last minute) I was in search for Chocolate Truffles and the City was too far way. I usually go to Coco Bella in the Westfield Shopping Center SF. Powells was the perfect solution for the long commute. I also was aware of the Gelato they have at Powell's. I was apparently not the only LMS guy in the place. It was actually a bit crowded with families and kids, and couples. I was bummed that there was not any Chocolate Gummy Bears, but they was so much candy variety to choose from. Dip sticks to Big League Chew to Vintage Lunch pails, they cover all the bases for Nostalgic candy. With Willy Wonka playing in the background, it's kind of hard not going nuts picking up all the goodies to take to the cash wrap. I avoided the Jelly Bellies and grabbed some candies for the lil' ones. After some Carmel Popcorn and Wax Lips and Vampire Waxed teeth, I made my way over to the Truffles. When I was ready to order, Soudkaina the cashier was very helpful while I picked out some Decadent Truffles. I bypassed the Gelato but got a Chocolate Moonpie to go. After $18.00 worth of candy, I made my way home to surprise the wifey. In less than 1 hour, my small one ate 2 1/2 of the Truffles I bought my wife. Happy Valentine's Day, yeah right? Not only is this place adorable and do they have incredibly good gelato, the staff couldn't be nicer. It was 8:10 on a Sunday night and we found the doors locked. The employees told us they closed at 8:00. When I said it was my birthday and I really wanted gelato, they opened, served us AND sang happy birthday to me! WoW! This place is so amazing. You walk in and are completely overwhelmed by everything in the store. Powell's has every single candy or sweet that you could possibly imagine (gummies, chocolate, taffy, candy bars, rare sodas, lollipops, literally EVERYTHING...they also have ice cream. It definitley evokes a feeling of nostalgia among all ages and there is something for everyone. Great place for kids, but if you are just going yourself--beware because there are TONS of screaming kids, so just prepare yourself! I love candy, and Powell's is THE place to go get it. Dangerously close to my house, this place stocks candy in some pretty impressive displays. One thing to say about this place is that it is a visual experience. Candy EVERYWHERE. The gelato is top notch, and their display case of S'Mores, Chocolate Covered Honeycomb, English Toffee, and Peanut Butter cups the size of a cupcake are worth a mention. I love Powells. We love Zoonie's. Yesterday we had a Witches Walk as a fundraiser supporting La Clinica de la Raza. Zoonie's made up little candy boxes for all of the witches. The popularity of this place for anyone over age 9 is a mystery to me. The quality sweets (and there's not much) are quite expensive, and so on a relative basis is the huge selection of very low quality candy that I suppose I'm expected to remember fondly from my youth. Well, yes and no. I guess if you still prefer Root Beer with your fries, you'll love to go back in time at Powell's and eat some Pez while watching the endless Willy Wonka re-runs. That's what Powell's is for me - just perfect for those who need more Gene Wilder. The store itself is very nice, as are the people who work there. But if you want some very good candy at terrific prices, the Trader Joe's is 3 blocks away. read more

I went into this shop to get some jelly fruit slices to decorate happy birthday lemon bars. The manager was so nice and made sure to pick out only perfect slices for me. This place is a veritable wonderland of candy; you can even buy single color M&Ms in bulk and edible chocolate birthday candles! Their gelato is absolutely delicious, with many flavors from which to choose. They also have some novelty items such as jacks, small games, and goofy hats. A candy shoppe for the young and young at heart (oh okay, its for the old at heart too), they have an incredible amount of variety of candy/toys/junque, plus tasty gelato....You could spend hours if you were to really look at everything that is here, and it would be hard not to purchase something from here. Sure, some of the candies you can get at the 99 cent store at less than half the price, but some of this stuff you will have to look far and wide for before you find it elsewhere. Very big gelato variety compared to most places! Peanut butter cup is a great choice, next time I will try pumpkin and the fudge they have available. Service is fast and friendly. The inside of the store is clutterd with candy from all sorts of era's and countries as well. Now it's time for me to get candy! I go to the gummy isle and grab my self some sour blueberry strings and those were so delicious and to top it off they have gelato! Okay their gelato here is perfect, it's not to sweet and taste homemade. I love it. Plus this place isn't to pricey like some other candy shoppes ( I won't name drop!). Stumbled upon this cute little shop after having dinner next door. Glad we did! They have all sorts of candy. Literally everything, I even saw candy we use to rave over as a kid.
