Remember I-Go? it was a really cool non-profit community of like-minded people who needed to share cars for a low price. The hourly rate was cheap and there was almost always minor body damage on the car but no one cared because the prices were low and it's hard not to get body damage in the city. We just cared if the car ran so I-Go didn't put a ton of money into body repair. If people were rude or inconsiderate with the cars the community would hold each other accountable. it was at really great thing. Then Enterprise bought them. The community was replaced by lots of marketing from Enterprise Carshare for your own good ie every time you called you had to verify all of your account information but it was for your safety. Annoying on a cold, Chicago day when you're outside trying to get into your car. Then Enterprise Carshare opted out because they weren't making mountains of money and I had no place to go but Zipcar. I'd give it 2 starts but it's the only game in town and I need them. Their marketing is silly - each car has a silly name. The fleet of cars is so so. It's hard to get a hold of them. I called today and was told the wait time would be 5 minutes. I'm not looking forward to that on a cold Chicago night. Reading the other reviews I see I'm in for mediocre customer service. I may just go back to what I did 20 years ago and rent cars for the day. A day at a full service rental agency is 24 hours. You can get a lot done and get points if you play it right. I have been a member for well over five years and this is the first time I have been irked by Zipcar. Living out in the suburbs of Naperville area without a car is not the best; however, I was happy that Zipcar had two cars on the North Central College campus; now they only have ONE. One car for a college campus is pretty INCONVENIENT. There was much more flexibility with two cars but now since there is only ONE car, I'm thinking what is the point of paying for my membership for another year? At least with car rental there will be a car, I do NOT mind paying for convenience and it looks like I will be going back to that as I do not stray further than 20 miles and pay for car rental. I definitely expected better from Zipcar, but since the economy has slide down, I guess Zipcar decided to go with it. Absolutely disappointed! read more

Worst car rental experience I ever had. Here's what happened: I needed a car for just a couple hours and Zipcar seemed like a good deal, so I registered, received the card and booked a car for 2 hours. When I arrived at the car, I was able to open it with the card, but I was not able to start the car (and yes I do know how to start a car). I tried to call customer service several times, but could not get anyone on the line. I cancelled the reservation (paying a cancellation fee), booked another car, with the same problem: the car would not start, customer service still not responding. I tried contacting Zipcar since then by e-mail to be refunded for these 2 reservations, with (surprisingly) no answer. Will update if I receive an answer. EDIT: I finally received an answer to my e-mails, Zipcar is refunding the 2 car reservations. If they don't answer to the phone calls, at least they read their e-mails. read more

So I signed up for Zipcar almost a year ago. For about 8 or 9 months I've used the service 2 or 3 times a month. Now the past three reservations, all of the sudden I've had claims that I left the car dirty or damaged. The email they send you to tell you that someone has reported this damage or problem is completely unclear and in no way specific. Today when I got an email stating that I left the car damaged I cancelled my membership. I'm really glad that because someone claimed I left the car dirty during one of my previous three reservations I took pictures of the car for my most recent reservation. It's quite ridiculous that you should have to take pictures to prove you didn't damage a car or leave it dirty. Zipcar customer service also takes forever to get back to you about these issues and then they don't ever tell you the exact problem. But they still find the time to tell you that as a member you should be sure to review the etiquette document. I'll be using Enterprise from now on. read more

Surprised by all the negative reviews on Yelp. Zipcar has been nothing but fantastic, and their cust. service is phenomenal. We had trouble with the gas card when trying to refill the tank, and it made us late to return the Zipcar. We had to pay for the refill out of pocket, plus we were concerned about late fees. In our rush, we pocketed Zipcar's gas card on accident. Not only did Zipcar IMMEDIATELY refund our gas $, but they took off the extra 1/2 hour they charged us for, and then booked us another half hour window for us to return the gas card (without charge). Considering it was probably user error with the gas card issue, their immediate apologies to us for the trouble and immediate offers to take off charges and help us out makes Zipcar a top-notch company in my opinion. I had a terrible experience with the application process. On their site, they mention that you can be "approved within minutes" and that in some cases it may "take longer." Nowhere on their website does it specify it could take up to a week for your application to be processed. Moreover, the site and application specify that you begin using Zipcar right away by accessing the app. I found out after staying on hold for customer support for an hour and a half, that in some cases, you cannot start driving Zipcar until you receive the 'key' in the mail. Next, they surprise you with a $25 application fee that they do not specify is non-refundable. After I called customer support numerous times to inquire why it was taking a long amount of time for my application to be approved, they finally informed me that there was some wrong with my account which was causing the "hold" and they "did not see it" until I called. When I requested to cancel my application and receive my refund, they informed me that it was non-refundable. Again, this is wrong in their contract because the fee is only supposed to be 'non-refundable' if you are processed as an applicant. Customer support is awful and when you ask to speak to a supervisor/manager, they cannot get a hold of anyone. Long story, short- save your time and money!!!!!! read more

When I first found out about Zipcar I thought it would be a great service, convenient without the hassle of owning a car and dealing with all the associated costs. Instead I have found the opposite to be true. Often the cars are unclean because they are used by others who do not own them, they do not look after them. If the car breaks down or the gas card doesn't work, it is your problem. You have to wait around for hours for them to come fix it, or prepay for the gas and wait months for them to pay you back. The final straw for me was when my credit card expired and they only contacted me via emails to my gmail account which I never check. I did not receive a letter, I did not receive a phone call, they did not prevent me from making reservations. None of this led them to hesitate within a two month period - after being a good paying customer for over a year and a half - from reporting me to a credit rating agency and ruining my credit. I had worked hard to develop an excellent credit score before Zipcar ruined it right while I was in the middle of negotiating a mortgage. Thanks for treating your customers so well Zipcar. I hope you go out of business soon. read more

A warning to anyone that wants to try Zipcar, apparently Zipcar feels that it is your responsibility to either push your Zipcar out of the snow drift that it is parked in or to stand in zero degree weather at 7 AM to call and reserve another car (and then walk a half mile to that car and hope that it is not parked in a snow drift). Phenomenal customer service Zipcar...needless to say I will not be using your service ever again!!! I didn't even mention the fact that my car had no windshield wiper fluid so I practically had to stick my head out the window just to see where I was going on the highway. read more

Been a zipcar user since they started in Chicago. Overall, satisfied with their service. Mind you they may be "big and corporate" but they are still not making any profit, and I just hope they survive. I can almost always get a car when I need, most of the time with little advance notice. I have never had a problem with a late fee (ok, once, but I called and they waived it with little convincing). I use a prepaid membership (75$ a month) which gives a discount on hourly rates (probably 10%). I admire the people who want to support "local, and hybrid" etc, but for me it is what is most convenient if not cheap. Car-sharing is environment friendly per se without driving a hybrid. read more

Since I moved to Chicago, a car-sharing service seemed like the best way to get around the city and not spend all my money doing it -- using Zipcar, I could get several errands done in a matter of a few hours, without all the hassle of paying for cabs, tipping, or waiting for buses and trains. It is handy to have a car available last minute if something comes up and I need to get somewhere fast. I got my membership with Zipcar in December 2009 and have had no problems with their service -- I always return on time, the car is always clean, etc. However, when I took the car for a whole day (spending $90+) to drive to the suburbs, the Gas Card was missing leaving me only one option, which was to refuel the car myself and wait for compensation from the company. Now, this isn't the end of the world -- but didn't I get a Zipcar membership so I don't have to trouble myself with those details? The next time I took a Zipcar a few weeks later, I reserved one (as I always do) with an Ipod adapter. When I got in the car that morning, the adapter was broken, like someone had tried to force the plug into a smaller outlet, and it was unusable. Again, I picked the car for that specific capability, and it was irritating that it did not come prepared. This last time, I reserved a car this morning to be used tonight at 630p. I confirmed my booking by clicking the "Yeah, Book it!" button, and went to my reservation at that time. When I got there, my card wouldn't work, and three guys told me it was their reservation and got in the car and drove off. I was late for my appointment, spent twice as much on a cab after standing out in the rain trying to hail one down, and when I spoke to their operator, she told me I clearly had not pressed the confirm button and insinuated I had made a mistake and had not reserved a vehicle. After repeated attempts to speak to a supervisor, and relaying these repeated problems, I was told that I must have booked simultaneously with the other customer and that their reservation had gone through while mine had not. The only resolution the supervisor could offer is that my issue was documented and would be forwarded to the home office. I joined Zipcar to eliminate hassle and make getting around easier. In the last three months, using their service has given me more headaches, cost me more money, and their customer service department has had no interest in taking responsibility for these repeated problems. I am recommending to my friends and family, when choosing a car-sharing service, to go with iGo. read more

I received an email from member services, which I requested from a manager I spoke with at customer services. After I responded to this email, and essentially demanded my $25 application fee refunded, it appears that they responded to this and refunded that money. I'm glad to have all of my money back and be completely done with this ordeal. I really hate having to argue with these companies as to why I deserve a refund! I think this is a really great idea! At first I was weary, but I decided to give it a try, because they had a deal going on during the Oyster Fest. I got a 1-year membership for $25, which also included $50 driving credit. The first time I used zipcar, I was a little annoyed because the person using it before me was running late, due to traffic. So then I had the choice of waiting for this girl, or walking to another location. Luckily I didn't have to go too far though, and still got the car at around the same time I had it scheduled for. And I got a half-hour credit put on my account for the inconvenience. I think it's pretty cool that gas and basic insurance are included in the hourly rate. I don't own a car, but I have 2 roommates that do. So if possible, I borrow one of their cars to run errands. I try not to rely solely on zipcar, because it would get expensive, it's hard to plan exactly how long you'll need a car with traffic and everything, and there's always the concern of getting into an accident and having to deal with all that mess. I think this is a good idea, but I personally would not use it more than once or twice a month. read more

I travel a lot. I don't need a car payment, parking fees, insurance statement, and gas bills for the 10 days a month I am in town...Enter zip cars. I spent so little last month. It is not for you if you are trying to take advantage of their set rules. I had to pay late fees on standard rentals at the airport for being one minute late. WHOA!!! I rarely write reviews but folks need to be aware of how Zipcar REALLY works. I used to think Zipcar was amazing. And as long as everything runs exactly as planned, it is. My guess is that anyone who gives it 5 stars hasn't used it long enough. I'm a weekly renter. I just had my last bad experience with Zipcar and I'm switching. The problem is that when you're renting a car for a short period of time, things invariably happen... traffic, late returns, emergencies, items left in the car and so on. And think about it, if you're renting a car, chances are you're a renting a car to do something important. If you have a problem with your car rental...then you're really going to have a problem. And that would be ok if there was someone to help you. With Zipcar, there is NO reliable customer service. I have used Zipcar for three years. I have had several incidents over that time and Zipcar has never given me satisfactory customer service... not once. For example, I'm supposed to get the car back by 6pm. There is an accident on my way home that brings traffic to a stand still. I'm 13 minutes late getting the car back but somebody else has it rented starting at 6pm. I'm charged 50 dollars for a late fee for something beyond my control. It has also happened to me where I've been left waiting for a car that wasn't returned on time. Zipcar rents their cars back to back. No car there... you're out of luck. When you do need customer service, there is no one to speak to in person. You call, listen to Zipcar advertisments and are put on hold in queue. This is usually done with a cell phone because you're out on the road or at the garage trying to get assistance with the car, throw in a dropped call now. ugh. This is a community car service... there is no individual customer service. Its great if you can't afford a car or have no alternatives. But there are always alternatives. this place is 5 star but I cannot get the stars to poulate :) I rented a Zipcar and found I was blocked in by a an out of city driver. (Dude! pay for parking or move here and get a sticker). I called Zipcar and explained the situation to "Monotone Mary" who, without an empathy told me I would more than likely pay 50.00 an hour. WHAT?! I am callign two hours in advance and you are hijacking me 50/hr? No way sister; this is America and you need to take voice lessons and use fair market practices. I called back and received a normal person,( sorry no name remembered), she advised me to call the Sipcar office on thenext business day and not to worry. I didand spoke to the lovely Katie . Cars were always in need of maintenance. A car I reserved in an emergency situation was damaged from an accident. I got ticketed for cars having expired tags... and their customer service agent double charged me for a replacement vehicle. Really horrible. I wouldnt bother. Stick with lyft. read more

I have been a loyal zip-per for 5 years and unfortunately their customer service has taken a nosedive. They are now outsourced and the reps have useless scripts they read off of. It's impossible to get a manager or anyone with authority on the phone to quickly/meaningfully resolve issues. Combined with declining car maintenance (called them 3 months ago about an expired registration which still isnt updated) and rising fees compared to Enterprise and it just doesn't make sense to keep using the service. read more

At first I was very happy but as some review people mentioned the policies at zipcar are designed to fuck the customer. If you are late, even if you call ahead, you are charged $50. That would be understandable except they take the $50 and will not do anything to compensate you when the previous renter is late. How is zipcar hurt when the car is late? The next renter is hurt and they get nothing from zipcar. If you use the online or mobile system beware. I was charged for being late even though I extended the reservation. After arguing with customer service for 15 minutes I was able to get a manager on the phone who admitted that many customers using the mobile website have been charged for being late when they extended the reservation. The only response I received after that conversation was a denial of the managers admission. They will not return calls or answer any questions about the conversations other than to deny any ongoing problem. When I probed customer service further they also admitted that the web log showed that I attempted to extend the reservation but that they didnt have a confirmation. When I asked the customer service rep to walk me through the process he got it horribly wrong. When I then asked to speak to his manager he laughed. He laughed and started calling me names like he was in highschool or something. It was only after I said I wouldnt hang up until he put his manager on that he finally went and got the manager. That was the manager that admitted the mobile website had problems. Somehow the manager of their entire customer service department had it completely wrong when she said that their system was having problems. By the way.. IGo is no longer and option. Zipcar bought the company that owns IGo so very shortly it will all be integrated. There is only one choice for such a service in the USA and Zipcar unfortunately is it. The service is a great idea and would be awesome but the corporate management sucks ass. They could give a shit about anything other than wringing another dollar out of you. read more

Very supportive customer service. They were very prompt in addressing my queries and were courteous to refund my cancellation fee that was charged by the system because I was just few minutes outside the cut off time. I don't know about other cities but the cars are clean in the locations around my area and its really a hassle free service. My feedback is that they should give some flexibility for return time; and the rates should be adjusted to provide incentive for customers renting for long hours, instead of flat hourly rates. read more

Fishy Business with ZipCar.... A friend came with me to Seattle to take my daughter to college a couple of weeks ago. We (all three of us) used her Zipcar account (2 hours) to get her college stuff to campus. My friend the account holder had a tremendous headache and asked to be dropped off at the hotel (two blocks from the Zipcar parking lot) and I return the car on my own. Yes, she should not have asked me to do this as I am not a Zipcar member. We were 20 minutes early for the end of our rental time and made it to the lot without any accidents or tickets and tried to put the car back in its spot. Strangely, there was another Zipcar in its place. Not knowing the system or what to do, I called my friend for advice. She suggested looking for the parking garage attendant or going across the street to the Zipcar office and ask for help as she was not up the task. Of course there was not any attendant, so I went across the street. I explained the situation to the woman at the desk. She informed me that I should not have been allowed to drive the car, in not such a nice way, because I am not insured by Zipcar and that my friend would be penalized for allowing me to do so. It didn't matter that she was ill and no damage had occurred to the car. The Zip lady said she would be contacting my friend. Meanwhile, some guy comes out from behind a screen/wall and offers to take our Zipcar without a home and put it away for me. I did not pursue it any farther, as I am not the member and could really fight my friend's fight. I think it is very fishy that there was a different car in the spot for the one I was driving. If we had returned the car right before the allotted time was up, I bet they would have charged my friend an extra $50 for the late fee! Ironically, if that car had not been there, this situation would never had happened! The next day, we learned that the punitive measure Zipcar decided to take was to force ME to sign up for a Zipcar account by deactivating her account until I get signed up. Personally, I have no interest in a Zipcar account what-so-ever because I own two cars and am fully insured by State Farm (which also covers rental cars in case I am in an accident). She has apologized and has learned her lesson. She has begged them to fine her instead to reactivate her account. They will not relent (I suspect it is the blonde lady in Seattle causing the problem). I have read over the account holder agreement since and see that it does state that a non account holder can not drive a Zip car. It makes sense and my friend, who thank god is still a friend, has certainly learned her lesson. What I can't believe and really ticks me off is that they are blackmailing my friend and me to either get their new member numbers up or extracting money by using our friendship as a tool for their ends. I believe this is absolutely wrong. Yes, she should have bit the bullet and driven all the way to the parking lot and walked back to the hotel before she could get her pain medicine. Who would have thought 2 blocks would have caused both of us such a pain in the butt? Frankly, I think this situation is worthy of a complaint to the Washington State Attorney General's office, the Better Business Bureau, Seattle Chamber of Commerce and a possible Class Action Lawsuit. read more

I wanted to say this zip car deal works in Chicago. I do not have a car and it's expensive to own one in the city. I use Zip Cars 2 times a week on average and it's a lot less than owning a car and paying for parking, insurance, gas, payments. What is really cool is there are so many places in the city to get one. Almost every building now has Zip Cars. You do not need a car in the city if you have ZIP Cars!!! read more

I would give a zero if possible. I looked into joining, the $70/yr membership for Chicago says cars starting at $7.50/hr. I called customer service to confirm this is accurate as when they began I remember the rates being higher. After a thorough conversation about this I applied for membership ($25 fee) and $70 membership. A few days later I got a notice blocking my membership saying I owed $50 annual fee from 2011. I couldn't join until I ok'ed this. Back in 2011 when they first started I did some 3 month promotional deal to try them out and did not renew. I really wanted to get hooked up with a car share as my beloved I-GO/Enterprise was no longer operating so I figured I'd dispute that charge after I became a member. After waiting 8 days for my card to arrive, not 3-5, I went to book my first car and guess what? The cars began at $11.50/hr for the tiniest car midweek. I called Zip and they told me prices vary in the city. Anyway after many, many heated phone conversations, so much time and aggravation!, they refunded my $75 and $50, but refused to refund the $25 application fee. I think the pricing is misleading and I caution anyone who joins to be prepared for the actual prices you'll see once you have already paid to join. Good Luck! read more

Generally, I like Zipcars just fine, but today I learned of a problem. Got a notice from them that a redlight violation had been issued on the car when I was driving and they'd paid it and would charge me the cost plus $20. Okay. Their site says if you have a problem with ticket you have to contact the issuing city. Okay. But when I looked at ticket online, it seemed contestable to me. I may be right, I may be wrong. But it doesn't matter, because ZIPCAR DIDN'T NOTIFY ME OF THE TICKET UNTIL 9 DAYS AFTER THE FINAL DATE TO CONTEST IT. So I'm left with a $120 ticket cost 'cause they've got a uselessly slow notification procedure. Not happy. read more

Completely disappointed so far. I've been hearing about Zipcar for years, today I finally decided to check it out because I needed a vehicle today. Through the app it said I could drive today, so I opted to do that. After uploading photos of my license three or four times without success, I called customer service to help me solve this. A rep told me that I could apply online through the website and would still be able to drive today through the app. I did that and my application was approved. I logged into the app to be told that my account was inactive and would need to call to "get back on the road". I called to find out that quote "the other rep was misinformed" and because I applied through the website I would not be able to drive until my zip card arrives in the mail. A complete and total waste of my time, and I was mislead to start a subscription today based on the misinformation from a customer service rep. Complete disappointment. Very poor first impression. Haven't even been a member for 2hours and I am all ready to cancel my membership. I signed up because I figured this would be a quick easy service with immediate access to a zipcar. What I did not know, is that it supposedly takes 3 to 7 business days to obtain your zipcard, which is the only way to access a car. I am furious!! had I of known that you do not have immediate access to a car, I would have never signed up and just stuck to my plan of renting a vehicle. Now I am out the $25 application fee, which is non refundable and I cant even rent the damn zipcar when I need it, which is tomorrow. Future not looking so bright for Zipcar! read more

Very difficult company to work with. It took a month just to deliver a membership card. I sent in multiple queries about the card on e-mail, which all went unanswered. Eventually I disputed the charge on my credit card, and am still working through resolution. When I filed the dispute, someone from the company did call me. But when I returned the call, I got an answering machine and my message there also went ignored. I have no interest in using a service with a company with such poor service. Extremely poor customer service. Will frequently charge you fraudulent fees so check your credit card statements. I was once charged for two speeding violations they claimed were committed while a car was in my possession. They claimed to have paid the fee on my behalf and they charged me nearly $300 for the whole ordeal. When I asked to see the violations, they literally told me that they lost them.... I was offered to present my case (in writing) to a "panel of Zipsters" who would judge whether or not I was responsible. I suggested that I resolve the speeding tickets with the police....since they were actually able to do something about them legally. The whole ordeal was a nightmare -- insulting customer service and rude people in call centers claiming they didn't have to help me because they already had my money. Luckily, my bank flagged the charges as fraudulent and reversed them. I was able to cancel my membership and, because Zipcar is so extremely disorganized, they only realized they didn't get any money from me until THREE MONTHS LATER when they started to harass me again. They repeatedly asked me to log back into my account to pay my fees -- an account I no longer had. This place is a total nightmare. Yes, it is convenient if you only use it in rare emergencies. Otherwise, just borrow a friend's car and save yourself the drama. read more

I wanted to like Zipcar, but in the end, I felt very nickel and dimed as a customer. Charge upon charge upon charge with no email explaining what it was. I get that it is a car sharing community and it's important to have the car back on time. However, I returned my car 1 minute late and got a $55 dollar late fee charge. That was it for me. I didn't feel valued as a customer. I was basically told too bad when I called to ask what the charge was because an email was never sent telling me why I have $55 missing from my bank account. RUN AWAY!!! Do not give these idiots your money. If you ever have an issue, they have the worst customer service on the planet. Once, our zipcar was over an hour late being returned, and it was a very cold day in December. We had to sit on the floor of a parking garage on the phone trying to get ahold of Zipcar. They told us to keep waiting... and waiting... and waiting. Finally, we had to BEG for a small bone for our troubles. They gave us $10 in free drive time, which never showed up in our account and we had to call MULTIPLE TIMES to finally get added. Each time we called to try to get this credit, they gave us attitude, like we were causing a disservice to them. Next, we had a promo code we wanted to use on an upcoming trip, but forgot to enter it when making the reservation. We emailed to ask if they could please apply it (so we didn't have to cancel the reservation and wouldn't lose our car and spot), and crickets..... we emailed again a few weeks later to ask if they would please honor it, since it had now expired, and they forwarded us some scripted directions on how to use a promo code. Didn't even bother reading the email. As a last straw, we had a minor billing issue where $8 of credit hadn't been applied to a trip, like it should have been. They refused to deal with this over email, so I called to get this very easy and minor thing taken care of, and they refused to deal with me, but instead needed to talk to my husband, the primary owner of the account. Really? Over an $8 credit that is your fault to begin with?! My husband works during the day, and it's an inconvenience for him to have to call, would just be much easier if I were able to take care of it. Forget it. High stakes security on this account, apparently. I CANNOT WAIT TO CANCEL THIS MEMBERSHIP! Will never ever ever ever take a Zipcar out again, and encourage the rest of you to avoid these guys too. Normally if u scan 14 minutes before reservation then you are fine. So I scanned 14 minutes earlier to drive the car 2 days ago. But after I got the email shows the scan time is 15 minutes earlier. Which mean "1" extra minutes but system charged me for another half hour money. I called them and begging them to waive that half hour charge. But they were acting very rude.. First rep said that's the policy, you must be follow and loudly. Second rep said we did the same thing to you last time which was 8 months ago...., I told both of them it's just one minute. Does that really matter to zipcar? A million company argue 1 extra minute charge with a 2 yrs loyal member. Can you believe it???! And I called Local office with the same issue. Guess what did I get? They told me if I wanna cancel my membership they can DEFINITELY to help me RIGHT NOW!!!!! And then hung up my call right after that. I really can't believe... Is this zipcar? Once nice zipcar?
