I had some cautious optimism going in and it's possible that helped me. Calling ahead I called ahead of my reservation (about an hour and a half) to confirm I was planning to pick up the car. I was pleasantly surprised that someone picked up. Though I did confirm that I did indeed speak with local rep. When I arrived, I talked to that same rep and he knew who I was and said it was good I called ahead. Lines and availability: There was a long line ahead of me (two parties). There was one employee (not the one I talked to on the phone apparently) and while helping the folks ahead of me, she walks to the garage saying, "let me check if there are cars". Not what I want to hear from a non-airport. Fast forward to when I go to the garage to get my car, I see two other cars ready and about four in line for a wash. There are several employees back there washing the cars. Analysis no one asked for: So I arrive at 11am on a Friday, with two parties ahead of me, finding most cars were being washed and weren't ready yet. In chatting with the employee, he said it was a slow day! I bought the extra auto insurance through Avis which cost 3X more than the car itself. Ultimately the car broke down in a rural, high elevation area (far from any body of water) and left me and my family stranded. Rather than accepting that the car had an issue or that the Avis insurance should be applied, they are billing me $6000 for the breakdown and claim I drove the car through a large body of water which is not at all true. Without an insurance company to represent me (Avis controlled the insurance), it is just me, a formerly loyal customer against this international company. Avis is using its power to pressure my credit card to bill me. Rather than doing the right thing and work with their insurance company or the car manufacturer, they have disempowered me and are coming after me as an individual. I've had bad experiences at Hertz in Chicago before, especially the one at 401 N State, but this was exponentially better! It was convenient as I could drop after hours with no additional charge, and it was an easy process. Only issue was signage. The location is new. The entrance is actually on the State Street side, and they threw the poor man in a broom closet, but it actually ended up being the best rental I've had in a long time.
