I was excited to go to this cafe in my new work neighborhood. It was Friday, got through morning traffic from San Leandro, found a parking space nearby, and got to Zing at 7:50am. Although the cafe was open, I walked in, the lights were off, and no one was at the counter!? They're supposed to open at 7am. I don't know if it's under construction because I saw some random workers going in and out, and one of them was nice enough to tell me that no one was working. WTF?! Stopped here daily while I was in Berkeley visiting my daughter. You walk in to a great eclectic vibe and the staff (namely Hugo) is welcoming and cheerful. I stopped by Zing Cafe for a Lox Bagel. The price seemed high, but you get a ton of veggies and salmon - so much so that it's served open face, they don't even try to make a sandwich out of it haha (and that's a good thing!). The veggies were fresh, the salmon had great flavor, and I really enjoyed the bagel. The service was excellent, the barista was friendly and my bagel was prepared perfectly. I took my breakfast to go, but they have a decent amount of seating. read more

I stopped in for a healthy snack and wifi and was absolutely delighted with this cute spot. Hugo and his brother were so welcoming and friendly, Hugo created a lovely customized pita snack plate for my veggie craving. The portion was generous, prices were low, and the veggies were very fresh. I'm Greek and was very pleased with the homemade pita and amazing hummus! I enjoyed the Philly cheesesteak sandwich quite a bit, but note that it is really nothing like a Philly cheesesteak. The steak was thinly sliced and there was a good amount of cheese and grilled onions and peppers, but also fresh spinach and tomato and a spicy chipotle sauce (it gave it quite the kick!). On ciabatta bread the sandwich was delicious and I did enjoy all the fresh veggies, but I didn't find the sandwich very reminiscent of a cheesesteak so I would rename the sandwich. I thought the place was cute, we ate at a table outside (not tons of seating inside), and service was very friendly but a tad slow. read more

The man who made my delicious sandwich essentially let my "build my own" because I wanted different ingredients from different sandwiches. It was so delicious but so filling that I was determined to save it for later. He wrapped it up nicely for me so that it wouldn't make a mess. They're open! Yay! I work with a business next door (Trackers Earth) and we've been anxiously awaiting their grand opening for months. Finally they're here, and best of all, they're great! The coffee was decent (haven't tried espresso drinks yet) and they have a gigantic selection of tasty baked goods including cronuts and cronut holes. (We're basically doomed.) There are also sandwiches etc. for savory things. The family that runs it is super super nice and had to jump through a ridiculous number of delays and hoops beyond their control to get the space opened up. It is a cute cafe and the location is nice. I wanted to support a local business. I ordered a roast beef panni sandwich to go. The guy was very friendly and chatty but it took a very long time to make my sandwich. It wasn't busy, I was the only one waiting, maybe he was just new. Unfortunately it wasn't until I got home I realized he made the wrong sandwich. Being hungry, I ate the ham sandwich instead. Later in the afternoon, I had such a bad stomach. Zing Cafe is a zinger! So pleased to happen upon the grand opening today and meet the family who runs the newest sweet spot in Berkeley. This corner of Ashby between Emerson and Essex badly needs a pleasant lunch spot. It is across from Ashby Bart, down from the Ed Robert's campus and is nestled next to popular wellness and spiritual center Terra's Temple. There is a lovely, flower filled terrace and limited inside space. The menu is small and growing with well priced $7 sandwiches on crunchy rolls, my pal Carin had a pesto turkey melt. She's a pro chef and gave the expert thumbs up. The baked goods choice was large including maple croissants and dainty pastries. Davy enjoyed the gelato selection! Did I say great coffees and fast service.They accommodated the opening day lunch rush with ease and had time to cut the ribbon and accept the local priest's blessing and well wishes. First time here. Tried the tuna sandwich which was fresh but very boring. My friend got the salade nikoise which was like a salad nicoise but with feta and no egg, I believe. I come here infrequently for the sweets. When I do, I always love the cookies and cronuts (I'm a bit reluctant to buy such a nicely crafted croissant that's turned into a donut, seems a waste, no?). I also like the people who work there. Very friendly. They definitely make my day better with their check-ins and how-you-doing's. This friendliness is what I like most about this neighborhood shop. Always a pleasant experience. I have been to Zing Cafe a handful of times. The barista is helpful, the food is always tasty and the drinks are good. What finally inspired a review is the barista today actually put too much cream cheese on my bagel. I feel like those are words I may never utter again, 'too much cream cheese'.
