The interior of Zhang's Kitchen has been remodeled a bit, although not by much. It's clean and organized, and definitely looks new. The workers in the front were super friendly and excited, which made the purchasing experience welcoming (Fluent in English/Mandarin/Canto)! Food wise, Zhang's is very standard. For anyone who's grown up eating Chinese food, there is nothing new here that will blow your mind. We got the Traditional Buddha Delight (for veggies!), the tofu with beef, and a seafood dish (blanking on name). All the dishes were mediocre but not terrible. The tofu was a bit crudely cut and overall none of the dishes really appealed on the presentation side of things. The buddha delight had a good mix of various veggies, but it was a tad on the bland side for me, and I also wished there were more greens. My dad wasn't too impressed with the dishes at all though, but he's a bit more picky. I would say bottom line is --- if you just want asian food, Zhang's will get the job done. If you are looking to be amazed, I would suggest looking elsewhere. read more

By far the BEST Chinese food in Plano. I used to think the previous restaurant (JS Chen) was not bad. But the new owners have elevated this restaurant by mountains. I ordered the Beef Crispy Noodles, Orange chicken, and a custom sweet pork in bun (that the owner made up for me). Everything was so delicious!! I'm from Hawaii and am always in search of good Chinese food. Being part Chinese myself, I longed for my grandparents authentic cooking. This meal took me home and then some. Definitely recommend! Looks like it was originally called J.S. Chen's. Their sign is still up and there is a banner outside under the previous name saying Zhang's Kitchen. Conveniently open until 10:00pm! Great for people like me who suddenly crave Dim Sum at night. We went around 9:00pm and the place was empty. We didn't try any of the food from their Menu. Just Dim Sum. When you first get seated, you will be handed a menu, laminated dim sum check sheet, pictures of dim sum dishes and a Expo white board marker. They didn't really explain to us what to do, but we figured you're suppose to write in the quantity of the orders on the laminated sheet. This took us a while.... first of all, the name of dishes on the pictures and the laminated check sheet has DIFFERENT names!! We pretty much had to guess and hope that we were ordering the right thing. Secondly, the laminated check sheet is divided into small, medium, large, x-large sizes. They show the tier of prices for dishes. The pictures of the dim sum is in no particular order so it was time consuming looking for what we wanted. Some of the names were not your typical dim sum names. For example, the Fun Roll is called Rice Noodle w/ Shrimp. By the way, the purple on the laminated check sheet means THEY ARE OUT. But the purple is laminated over.. meaning they will never have it? hmm... The food came out fairly quick. Some dishes were great and some, we had to make a mental note of not to order agian. I was not too impressed with their Fun Roll (Rice Noodle w/ Shrimp) and Xiao Long Bao (Dumpling w/ Pork & Ginger). The Fun Rolls sauce tasted a bit watered down, and their shrimps were so tiny! I was really shocked of how small they are. The Xiao Long Bao was over steamed or something, because the dumpling skin was hard and there was no soup inside the dumplings... The meat inside a bit bland too. The Crab Meatball and Pork Dumpling was delicious! We enjoyed the Roasted Duck too! The tables come with sugar, chili oil (spicy! house made?), soy sauce, salt and pepper. I wish they had vinegar too. I usually mix soy sauce, chili oil and vinegar for my dumplings. Overall, we left full. Probably will not be our top choice of late night dinner. PS: Restrooms are located at the front of the restaurant. Not the back! read more

Pleasant service for an authentic dim sum joint, but the items were frequently bland and poorly constructed (e.g., dumplings falling apart at seams, wrappers peeling off, rice paper being too thick, etc.). Sunday morning had barely any customers and cart service was slow. Prices were not cheap, though not horribly expensive - unless you count the expensive of not particularly enjoying the food. Edible, but not worth a second trip. P.S.: One of the servers upselled some of the food, which was off-putting. This is a decent restaurant, but the supposed star of the show - the dim sum - is something I am undecided on. It tastes fresh, but it is falling apart and the peels are too soft. I am a huge dim sum fan and thought I would like this, but it is just ok. The sesame chicken was cold on the inside, but on the bright side, the Singaporean curry noodles were great! Last, service was stellar. Overall an ok but not great restaurant. You will probably find something on the menu that you like, but I would not recommend the dim sum. read more

My new favorite Chinese restaurant!!! The hot and sour soup is served in a generous 2-person bowl and is as tasty as any I've had in Dallas. The dim sum selection is vast and their preparation is delicious (try the salted egg bun). Their regular menu has dishes to satisfy any appetite (the roast duck has a mouth watering flavor). Combine all of this with a very friendly and attentive staff and you have South China in North Plano. I'll be back once a week to try more selections. read more

I am updating this review as promised after they changed the sign, and I walked in. I am glad to report that the staff and service is excellent, and that they've absolutely no relation to that horrible JS Chen. So 5 stars to start with. I ordered a simple 1-dish lunch, and so far the quality is good! The premises look clean and tidy, and of course the staff service, is excellent. Having a chat with the owner, they did confirm that the dim sum is house-made, so I'll be updating this review when I get the time to go there for a dim-sum. But so far, Mr and Mrs Zhang is off to a good start! -- I am giving a neutral review, and hopefully when Zhang finally decides to actually remove reference to JS Chen, then we will finally pay a visit, and fairly update this. Come on Zhang, its been more than 3 months and you are still using a temporary banner, with the JS Chen permanent signage! I don't know what's the politics history, whether Zhang is the old staff or chef from JS Chen that had a fall out and bought over that horrible JS Chen at this location, but surely keeping that JS Chen signage is actually doing a disservice. Yes, like many others, we had a horrible experience with JS Chen when they were at this location, that seems to continue after seeing the same complaints as recently as Dec 2016 at their existing location near Jusgo supermarket. It was poetic justice when it finally closed down. I see below there are good reviews, and most of all, many praising *new* friendly service. So, there is hope. With that, I would encourage people to try this place out, based on the so far positive reviews, and maybe I would too after affirmation that Zhang really is a breakaway from JS Chen, and can get their act together to at least put up their own brand and be proud of a new chapter. So please, Mr. Zhang - get rid of that JS Chen sign, and the temporary banner. JS Chen is a bad name, and is costing you potential customers by having any association with that horrid brand. I didn't know I could find such authentic dim sum so far away from home. The chicken feet and Siu Mai were especially savory and delicious. The chili sauce they make here is also better than alot of the dim sum places in Cali. Service was stellar. The server was highly attentive and accommodating. The owner even stopped by my party's table to see how we liked the food. I would go back here again anytime but If I could go only one time during the week, I would go during the weekend brunch. I think I have found a new gem in Plano. This was another Chinese restaurant that had changed hands and now serve very good Dim Sum. The chef here has a knack for dumplings from Shrimp dumplings to various iterations of sea food and meat dumplings. The key to good dumplings is the wrapper and this chef has done a great job with some of the best, not too thick and does not stick or fall apart. Taste nothing better than the frozen stuff you get from any Asian market. No freshness at all! Then when it comes to dessert, it gets worse. What the heck is a bistro? This seemed like a restaurant. You sit, you eat, you say "ah" then you pay and leave. Meals were reasonably priced and the sauces were tastefully aromatic, not so heavy as to mask the ingredients. Can't say enough about the veggies, so I won't. I've been eating dim sum pretty much my entire life and I've had the luxury of trying a lot of dim sum joints. This place is honestly at the bottom of my list and I don't think I will ever return to this restaurant. The staff was very unpleasant, uncaring, and frankly didn't give a crap about their customers. We were here maybe 1 1/2 hours and the wait staff only came by a few times and it was mainly to bring our food out. The restaurant itself is very lackluster and they had paper table cloths over actual table cloths but you can tell the actual table cloths haven't been cleaned in a while. The food was okay but nothing really stands out as great.. we ordered the shu mai, shrimp dumplings (ha gao), vegetable shrimp dumplings, bean curd pork, shrimp fun cheong, fried taro, fried shrimp balls, and a few others. So, they didn't have the fried taro, okay fine whatever. The shrimp fun cheong never made it out, with no explanation. The shu mai took about 30 minutes to make it out of the kitchen and were steamed too long (over cooked). The wrappers on the vegetable shrimp dumplings were undercooked and didn't have any flavor. Though they didn't bring out the fun cheong and they ran out of the fried taro, they somehow made it onto the check. Like, how is it possible to get charged for something that we never received? I've had dim sum all over the county and in many Chinese cities. In my opinion, Zhang's is the best dim sum in the metroplex. If you know of a better dim sum spot please let me know. I've tried them all. Zhang's has carts on the weekends but has their dim sum menu available every day. If you have not been here give them a shot. Eh, it was just okay. The service and pricing however is top notch! We ordered a bunch of dim sum, and that was okay, honestly, nothing great but nothing terrible. It was your regular middle of the road dim sum, but you can order at any time, which is a plus. We then ordered the salt and pepper squid and salt and pepper pork chops, and this is where the disappointment set in. Both were over cooked, over spiced (and not in a spicy way) and just had no life left in them. I was comparing to Kirin Court's version, so perhaps I'm just spoiled by their cooks? I don't know, but I do know that I won't be ordering either again. The service as I said though was top notch, as we ordered quickly, got our food quickly, it was hot and we got our check quickly. The pricing was wonderful as well, as we spent $35, which at Kirin Court would have been $80. So come, try it, perhaps try different meals than we ordered and let me know how you like it.
