My husband and I were celebrating our one-year wedding anniversary and this was just the special-occasion-type-of-dinner we were looking for. The restaurant was able to accommodate our vegetarian needs and truly, I think this was the best meal of my entire life?! Twelve (!!!) vegetarian courses of dishes and flavor combinations I never could've dreamed up. Throughout the two hours, we were constantly surprised and impressed by the food and the service -- shout out to Casie & Megan. Towards the end, I was so full that I had to get up from the table to walk it off a little. I was then met by the host who offered to give my husband and I a tour of the property. The tour ended in their drawing room where they had moved our belongings and drinks, brought out dessert, and surprised up with champagne for our anniversary. I won't lie, it was a very expensive dinner. But there was alcohol involved (and truffles!) which brought up the price. Thankfully, we had a $100 dining credit which we received through a promotion when we booked our stay at the hotel (which I also gave five stars). Simply put, this is one of the top two dining experiences I've ever had (with the other being a Michelin restaurant in Sapporo, Japan). We ordered the chef's tasting menu and were blown away by some of the dishes presented to us. There were flavors and foods that I've never tasted before (and I consider myself to be quite eclectic in my choice of cuisine). Out of all the dishes, there were only a couple that I found to be mediocre, but the vast majority of the food was spectacular. My particular favorites were the Wellington, which was cooked to perfection, and the Tres Leches, which could've easily been the best dessert I've ever tasted. The texture of the Tres Leches paired very well with the crunchy honeycomb that was placed atop. And the flavor... well, I wouldn't do it justice by describing it with adjectives. It's just something you have to experience for yourself. All in all, one of the best meals that you can find anywhere. The final bill was on the pricey side, but hey, we're on vacation. New favorite Charleston restaurant! On our latest weekend trip to Charleston we came here for happy hour cocktails/charcuterie and ended up trying the most delicious truffle burger ever. This burger stayed juicy and melt in your mouth every single bite. We were told that they only prepare 5 per night so obviously had to order it. Afterwards, we immediately booked the five course tasting menu for the following night. Every time the server delivered a plate he would explain a complex course description. I honestly can't remember a single one other than to say that every course was unique, artfully prepared and even more delicious than the last. We tasted a bit of oysters, shrimp, caviar, fish, venison, etc. My absolute favorite was the dessert, and I swear I experienced a moment of heaven in every bite. Besides the food, the cocktails were incredible. The bartender was a true artist. I also loved the cozy, at-home vibe of the building. It made me wish I could go back in time to experience the history. All in all, we will make this a regular stop on our Charleston visits and may even venture to stay at this hotel exclusively. By far the worst high end meal I've had in Charleston -- and therefore severely overpriced. We went for a birthday dinner and ordered the tasting menu. Each item had us searching for the genius so prevalent in these reviews and left us stunned at the end of the night. The meal was spectacularly flavorless and served at room temperature or cold, which made me feel like they just did it in batches before the dinner rush. We had dinner reservations at 8:00pm and by 9:00 had been shuttled between three separate servers who were pleasantly impersonal. The high point was the sommelier, who took a thoughtful approach in helping us digest the wine list and chose a bottle nuanced for the forthcoming plates. The foie gras cigars which were tepid and bland. The deviled eggs were more reminiscent of a Sunday football gathering rather than a Saturday night downtown. The beausoleil oysters should have been left alone-- a thick, crunchy version of mignonette sauce consumed them. The main was Beef Wellington, which tasted as though it had been made a few days prior and run over the salamander prior to serving. I cannot recall the dessert that was served, outside of it being unremarkable. Ironically, the Chef sent out a signed copy of the menu for us to take home. read more

And the food... sorry I started daydreaming about it for a minute... tantalizing to the tastebuds. The chefs are so creative with the presentation and the flavors are huge. I literally received a mini flower pot with a tree looking thing in it and had no idea what was happening (and as you can see from my previous reviews I am no stranger to the finer restaurants). Well fun fact it was a radish and the "dirt" was quinoa and under the "dirt" was salted butter and herbs!! You're meant to pull the radish out and sip it in the butter! That was course 1! As you can imagine all the other courses kept to the creative flair and the excellent tastes. The ambience - wear bug spray. It's in a gorgeous, romantic garden with cute cafe tables and water features. This place is right off the main drag and you would have no idea. It's nestled behind a large wall and a part of a lovely historic plantation. This will def be our go-to place is Charleston for every visit. After going to many Michelin rated restaurants around the world, this may in fact be my favorite non-Michelin that should be a Michelin. After our second visit to this amazing establishment, my wife and I were left with only one question: how is this not a Michelin starred restaurant? I'm lucky enough to have dined at several of those spots, including a current 3 star restaurant (and Inn...you can guess which :) Our first experience at Zero was incredible. Amazing food, incredible wines, absolutely top-notch service, with 'zero' pretense (sorry, dad joke). We enjoyed the place so much, we snagged a table again, one year later. It's only gotten better. Any of the 'snacks' that start your meal could be a course at a lesser place, and it just gets better from there. Chef Petrillo nudges you out of your comfort zone without being pushy, delivers gastronomic delights without the weirdness that can pass for fine dining these days. The som, Anthony, is awesome. The guy knows wines like Einstein knew atoms, and he's answered my wine noob questions thoroughly for 2 years now. It's tough to justify spending serious coin on a single meal these days. Yes I did say you walk through the kitchen which is beautifully appointed and extremely well managed! The first spot we stopped after being greeted by the hostess was the bar for a before dinner cocktail. We had the Alter Ego and Red Scare off the cocktail menu and let me say they were both equally delicious drinks. The staff was friendly and quickly had us seated in a perfectly designed room, with only four tables! There was no over crowding or noise issue in this restaurant! It was romantic and the atmosphere was perfect. Now on to the tasting menu...we sincerely appreciate any restaurant willing to take the guess work out of food for us and could not have been more pleased by this menu if we tried! The food was DELICIOUS! From the presentation with explanations to the beautiful wine pairings, the whole experience had us in rapture! Had the most amazing happy hour experience here with friends on Labor Day weekend. The restaurant is in such a cute place surrounded by so many plants and well decorated houses. The service is so nice. Ambience level is great, so quiet and peaceful. It's great to walk or bike to this place. We got cava with a cheese board and deviled eggs. Soigné. Immediately, it is evident this is a boutique restaurant with a focus on pampering its customers. While it is easy to get caught up in the style, you can remove all the extras and at its heart, it is still a tremendous restaurant. I've spent many years in Charleston, but after joining the military in the late 90s, now only visit occasionally. The restaurant scene boomed after I left. Mike Lata, Jason Stanhope, and Sean Brock have transformed it into a national destination for the food, rather than just the usual offering of accessible tourist-friendly mainstays that dominated the landscape pre-9/11. Chef Vinson Petrillo caught my attention on Top Chef Masters and Chopped. He clearly has the passion of an artist. He stands out among hundreds of other competitors; something about his sincerity is impossible to ignore. It is typical for people to quickly write off chefs dedicated to artistry as "style over substance," this is lazy and not true at Zero Restaurant. Our tasting menu consisted of: "Donut" - While I'm not 100% certain, I believe these were butternut squash "donuts" with salmon roe and edible flowers. They were caramelized perfectly and slightly sweet. I prefer these to actual doughnuts. I don't have a sweet tooth, so these were a delightful addition to the meal. I could've eaten a half dozen. "Foieffle" The waffle was crisp and the foie gras was luxurious. It felt indulgent and left me wanting more. I tried a bite of the vegetarian version, where the foie gras was replaced with goat cheese. Different, but just as tasty. Deviled Egg - I enjoyed the caviar russe ossetra topping each egg. Potted Plant - Radishes in edible soil. I can't recall what the waitress said the soil was made of, but I believe she said a type of butter below the faux-dirt. This was an interesting concept and fun, but I didn't like the taste. It was one note, fatty. No real flavor. But I do appreciate the whimsy. Lightly Cooked Sea Scallop - Truffle, Yuzu, and Curry These were terrific. The citrusy bright yuzu scallop was clean and very good, but I was surprised by how much I liked the curry scallop. It seemed the least appropriate in concept, almost like pairing cheese with seafood. But the curry was so redolent and exciting that it brought the scallop to life. Wagyu Beef Cheek Anolini with the White Truffle supplement. The kitchen generously served a mountain of white truffle shavings on top of the anolini. Pine Nut emulsion, Dried Leeks, hen of the woods mushrooms, and elegantly prepared pasta...honestly the beef cheeks went almost unrecognized. I was blinded by the more impressive ingredients. This dish is savory, gentle, creamy, and perfectly sized. The pasta was perfectly al dente, not too soft and not chewy. The ideal level of bite. Lobster Grilled & Glazed in Yuzu & Chili with various textures of rutabaga and celery root This dish did not stand out as much in flavor as it did in concept. I love that the chef used a root vegetable like rutabaga instead of pasta. It's inspired and ode to healthy alternatives for breads/pasta. But, despite the yuzu & chili, the dish lacked a little punch for me. I wanted more seasoning, something to wake it up. It felt like it was missing one element to really make it memorable. Beef Wellington - Foie Gras, Carmelized Onions, Wild Mushrooms, and aerated potato I was concerned this would be too heavy for a dish in a tasting menu, but I all doubts vanished when the dish came and the beef was textbook medium rare. The pastry flaky and light. I loved the aerated potatoes, since I'm not a fan of starchy, heavy mashed or baked potatoes. This was truly a surprise, given I rarely eat beef and almost never order it anymore. Tres Leches - I tried a bite of the honeycomb. I liked what I tried. It reminded me of a crunchy honey graham cracker. My mother who was with me said this was her favorite dish. She loved the milk ice cream. In closing, most tasting menus enjoy the freedom to go over the top and serve people food they wouldn't enjoy more than a few bites of because they're expensive small plates most people only eat once. However, I would go to a restaurant and order these dishes again and again. The donuts, the foieffle, the beef wellington, scallops, and beef cheek annolini are all competent dishes that stand on their own. These would fit just as well outside a tasting menu and in an al a carte setting. That's not common. I was wow'ed by the food. The service is top notch. Very professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. You'll be treated well by staff that are genuinely invested in the success of the restaurant. read more

I crave attention to detail when it comes to eating out. Since I don't do so very often, I tend to filter my options pretty thoroughly before committing to a major meal. Zero Restaurant delivers, almost more than a person can handle. Our party spent in excess of three hours during our tasting menu experience, starting with cocktails at the bar at 5 pm and ending up outside at a table beneath the balcony in the pouring rain. The experience evoked for me stories of ancient Roman feasting, replete with richly indulgent food in such compact and succulent portions that by the time the point of satiation is realized, you have already taken your final bite. Pace yourself especially if you are a small sized person unaccustomed to such lavish, lingering foods and libations. If you are not staying the night at the hotel, an easy if unsteady stroll away, consider taking a cab or ride share home. Or even better: walk back to your room with someone you trust to navigate the streets of downtown Charleston. And even though you may be tempted to take it all in, be willing not to finish everything on your plate, as sacrilegious as that may sound. Sometimes, a meal of such epicurean proportions tests your willpower in ways you had not anticipated or truly realized. This is a gastronomic tour de force of food, flame, and expert presentation, but just as you can't see everything at the Louvre, National Art Gallery, or Museo del Prado in a single visit, maybe you should pass on that final sip of Spanish cava rosado or chocolate and marshmallow s'more. This isn't about getting your money's worth. You should not feel ashamed to leave the plate less than empty. The kitchen team here will not get the wrong message. They know you liked it. But sometimes they cannot help themselves when they lavish you with culinary love. Fast for this. Plan ahead. Do not take it lightly. But by all means, do not pass this opportunity up. This restaurant was terrific! The food was delicious. The wine pairings were great as well (one bottle of white and one bottle of red served amongst 6 people). I wish there had been more clarity on the website, because when I had paid $135 (each plus a prepaid tip) for a tasting menu, I had thought we were receiving all the items listed on the website; but it was actually only a few of them. To be fair it says "sample tasting menu" but I would think that some items may vary, not that some items would be excluded. In addition, I just thought it was extremely unprofessional to cut a beef Wellington and remove a piece of the side of the Wellington. My husband and I we're probably 10-15 years younger than the other 2 couples at the table, and their pieces were fully wrapped beef wellingtons. In addition, the chef cut the center piece claiming it "needed to be smaller" and proceeded to eat it, but yet my husband and I received pieces with parts of the side taken out of it. Overall, it was a great experience, but when the website claims it'll be a 2 hour experience with multiple courses, it should be a little more clear, and the chef probably should ensure everyone is getting the same experience. read more

My friend Peggy brought me to Zeros for dinner. There is lovely outdoor dining in the courtyard. And a handful of indoor tables at discrete distance from each other. The atmosphere is ideal for romance. The setting is intimate and subdued with indirect lighting. I had no problem reading but a member of our party used the flashlight function on her phone to read the menu. You are offered water, and are provided the option of flat or bubbly. I opted for bubbles and received a large bottle of San Pelligrinos. Exquisite start. You have a choice between a three or a five course meal. Each course is married with a beverage, chosen or mixed to enhance the gustatory and olfactory experience. We are asked about dietary needs or restrictions when they he reservations are made and again at the table. Chef Vinson Petrillo uses advanced culinary textural, and visual art skills to develop each individual component of each course. You are enticed visually by the colors, textures, and proportions. Each component of the dish is prepared to perfection, using techniques that I have only seen on the TV show Chopped, which the chef has won twice. One beautiful sauce was encapsulated into something that I do not know the term for, but the sauce is not free form. It is like an egg yolk, in a soft form without an exterior barrier. I think it is made by dropping dollops of the sauce into a liquid that forces a physical change without molecular change. It's just a fabulous sauce presented in a novel fashion. The hors d'oeuvres (which were in addition to the 3 or 5 courses) is a whimsical display of several different foods which include deviled eggs, lobster roll, and a flowerpot which is edible. You need to experience it to appreciate it, and I did. It was delicious. The beet tartare was whimsical and I dream of it. One dish I found unimaginabley delicious was the Parmesan tortellini in a mushroom broth. I breathed it in and savored the experience. I usually don't love mushrooms, but I eat them because they are good for me. I loved the depth of mushrooms Unami in this dish. The broth was light and infused with heavenly flavor and aroma. Just breathtakingly precious. Then tortellini takes your pleasure to a higher level. It is filled with Parmesan that has been liquified, which resulted in warm gush of yumminess when bitten. This was the first time ever where I loved the food so much, I didn't want to eat it. Of course eating was indicated, though not quickly. I savored every breath of this dish every taste. Each dish and accompanied wine and beer I tasted was masterful. The wait staff were knowledgeable and just attentive enough. This meal along with meeting the man who imagined and developed it, was a night I will always cherish. This is where you go for a quality, Michelin level meal. The space is super cozy and romantic, and I love the little open kitchen where you can watch Chef Vinson Petrillo do his magic. They were all amazing, but I recommend The Red Scare made with Tequila, Grenadine, Habanero Simple Syrup, and Cilantro, which is one of the most interesting, delicious, and complex drinks I've ever had. The offering is a chefs course meal so no real menus to speak of except for what is being cooked that evening. They offer a wine pairing as well. The food was absolutely amazing. We had a wonderful date night out at Zero Restaurant. I always love a good tasting menu-- the meal was already picked out for us, and we also did a wine pairing to go along with each dish. The servers were very attentive and knowledgable, and they explained each course thoroughly. The light bites to start were fun and creative-- we especially liked the fois gras + the beef tartare "cigars." The standouts of the evening were the wreckfish and the Dutch Baby COVERED in black truffle (this was an add-on you could choose with the beef wellington course--and we were so glad we did!) The pasta course was a little over-powering and didn't pair well with the wine selected...and the dessert was pretty good (the crunch added to the tres leches was a little overwhelming after the very-filling meal we had.) Overall, we really enjoyed the evening outside in the courtyard. The restaurant is quite pricey, so be ready to spend some $$$. It is the perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion. We are here about 3 weeks ago and as I recall the meal the only thing that stands out was the mozzarella with tomatoes. That was excellent. Everything else was good but not the exceptional....... please keep in mind when you read my reviews I judge on a tough scale. Matter a fact this night we were actually suppose to be eating at the French Laundry in Napa but had to cancel trip due to covid and it not being open. The oyster was nice, steak tartare was good, and the lamb dish was funky. I usually provide more details in my reviews but it's hard to recall and that a sign of an average meal. Communication with Zero Gorge was difficult due to you all not being open during the day we would typically get a call back the next day concerning our reservation and allergies plus the rain storm for the evening, We where to sit outside and did not want to get pushed into a room just to hold a reservation . As we thought we were lead down to the undercarriage of the house where multiple house guest would come and go as pleased being very loud and running what was to be a romantic atmosphere . The Staff was kind but closed off , The Food served was very nicely presented but the taste was plainly Awful , Nausea , we honestly kept waiting for the food to get better but where disappointed with each course . We stayed simple by not adding Caviar and Wago beef to the menu , not being big drinkers we waved the wine tasting . We left very disappointed not having a great experience for a 16 year wedding anniversary and $500 lighter . Incredible dining experience. Why not go out and have dinner where the chef has made all the decisions for you and does not allow you to mess it up by ordering for yourself. (Really 3.5). Atmosphere: 5, food: 3.5, service 3. Beautiful setting but most dishes weren't memorable beyond creative presentation. Our server was nice but there were several significant service errors that shouldn't be acceptable for a $500+ meal. - there was a large floor fan pointed directly at my back at the start of the meal (from about 3 feet away). A nearby table mentioned they moved because of it. I asked for it to be turned, and it was, but midway it turned back at me so I had to move it. - drinks took incredibly long to come out. It seemed as though they were forgotten. Neighboring tables had two somm visits before we got our first round, after the first course. - we ordered the caviar supplement. Server forgot and brought it out two courses late, after I checked. - the caviar supplement was tasty and fun, but it consisted of the waiter placing caviar on your hand to be eaten with him standing beside you. Our dirty plates from the previous course weren't cleared so it felt rushed and confused, especially for the price. Best dish was the dessert. Ultimately dinner was fine but a disappointment, and it didn't justify the price. We ate much better at the Grocery and Husk. read more

The opening snack of some sort of merengue dipped in liquid nitrogen burned my tongue and roof of my mouth, 24 hours later and it's still burned. Overall the food ranged from mediocre to good but the service left quite a bit to be desired. It was awkward and mistakes were made on our orders. I had requested that if possible fruit be left off my dishes or served on the side and there were a number of easy opportunities to acknowledge the request but not a single attempt was made. read more

A fantastic setting for the special occasions when you really want to enjoy the finer side of dining. I loved that the entrance is right at the kitchen, you can see the magic of Chef Petrillo as you arrive. The bar in the next room is very small, but perfect for just relaxing with your special someone. As we were seated all the staff welcomed us with a friendly hello. Then we were seated in a nice 2 top to the right of the fireplace. This intimate room was filled with many others enjoying their dinners. Our server Amy then arrived, she was also very friendly and engaging. We knew the menu was basically a tasting menu, and we were ready to enjoy. There were two 5 course tasting menus, the omnivore and herbivore, while the other side of the menu had full entree options you could choose from instead. Though they were limited to 3 courses, they were reasonably priced. We started with a cocktail, I enjoyed the Money Penny (a gin, elderflower, & lemon cocktail) while my husband took Amy's suggestion of the American Surrealist. He loved the NY whiskey sour, the bartender made. Dinner, was just way too good for me to describe in detail. It was served in an appropriate pace so we could enjoy the wine pairings with each course. Snacks included eggs w/caviar, Chef's version of a lobster roll, and a carrot macaron. All three were unique and flavorful. After that wonderful start the other courses included: Octopus a la Plancha, Ricotta Gnudi, Wreckfish steamed in brussel sprout leaves, Beef Wellington, and then Tres Leches (deconstructed like). WOW! We loved it, a delicious 2 hour venture that really was unique, surprising and memorable. This was one of the top 3 worst fine dining experience of my life. I am giving two stars due to the good service. However what should never happen is that the food service is started prior to receiving the drink order. Waiters started putting food on our table and we were still missing the bottle of wine we had ordered. The presentation of the food was creative and the technique was very high end but almost each dish lacked flavor or was not seasoned correctly. Multiple dishes for example the scallop dish were so sour I couldn't eat it. I am not sure what is going on. Wasn't the sauce tasted prior to plating? I really wanted to like this place. This is hands down the best tasting menu I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The staff was nothing short of perfection, every course perfectly timed, perfectly paired, and perfectly explained. It started at inventive, built to delicious, and ended with desserts so perfect that I was truly devastated I couldn't eat them both.... and I don't usually like dessert. Some of the wines they chose were absolute stunners! If you want to have a moment that makes you question all other food that has entered your mouth, this is that moment. Lastly... $135 for wine +food... I'm honestly shocked at the value. This place is a hidden gem, in 3 months they will have a 6 month waiting list and a publicist. Get in while you can. read more

This was one of our most disappointing dinners in Charleston. We started getting our food about 10 minutes before our drinks came. Which kind of made us feel like we were getting pressured along to start eating. Most the food seemed a bit gimmicky and lacked true tastiness. WOW! This was my first time to Charleston and I was so excited about the culinary scene there. I always do extensive research in preparation of trip to solidify reservations. Zero has been noted in many articles about being an outstanding culinary experience in Charleston, and it did not disappoint! The dining area is small, so be sure to plan ahead and grab a reservation in advance (I booked about a month out). We paid the extra money to do the wine pairing and it was so worth it. You get generous pours and yes, I absolutely left with a buzz! The wait staff is knowledgeable and give you a great explanation of each course (we had something called a "fois g'waffles" fois gois in between thin wafers. SO GOOD). We were stuffed by the end of the meal! The meal itself took about 1.5-2 hours since there are quite a few courses. I'm so glad we spent the time and money at this restaurant. I was blown away! a truly exceptional catered experience. the tasting menu was a masterpiece. the flavors as well as the presentation goes beyond 5 stars.
