We wanted to come check out this new restaurant serving soup dumplings! Walking in I thought it was quite authentic, our server was the sweetest/ cutest, we tried a few things to sample the menu. My thoughts on what we got: -Spicy cucumbers- simple and tasty! Not overly spicy but flavorful, add some chili oil from the table, very good! -Chicken soup dumplings- these are the first " real" soup dumplings I have tried besides the trader Joe's ones ( which are pretty good!) These were ok to me, very little broth inside and lots of dough -Shrimp and pork dumplings- surprisingly my favorite of the night! They looked plain when brought out but adding a little bit of soy sauce and chili oil brought these to life! Flavorful are delicious! -Dan Dan noodles- we didn't love these, but I had thought that the darker area was a meat sauce, it is not, its actually chili's and oil, resulting in pretty spicy, my lips were tingling! Dynamite dum sum. If I closed my eyes I thought I was eating somewhere in China town, NYC. This spot is super legit. Wife and I tried an assortment of steam dumpling options. From the cabbage and pork to the chicken and mushroom, fantastic. The show stopper, though, was the soup dumpling with pork. Not an easy dump to get right at most places that offer it. Easily the best I've had in years, let alone in Florida. The price isn't cheap but what is, escpially for a specialty spot? Had a great lunch at Zen Dumpling. This place is a God send. You must order the spicy cucumber salad, refreshing with a hint of spice. Their chili wontons are not overly spicy but warming to the soul. Their XLB soup dumplings came out piping hot and are served with traditional ginger and vinegar. They are very tasty. We ordered more food than we could finish but I highly recommend you stop by and give it a shot! Their service was absolutely fantastic. We ordered the sweet and sour baby ribs, shrimp and pork steamed dumplings, Mongolian beef and General Tso chicken. Both the Mongolian beef and General Tso chicken came with white rice. The ribs were so tender and flavorful. The General Tso chicken was some of the best we've ever had. Everything was excellent and the portions are large! Our last visit we tried the Spring Rolls, Soup dumplings (shrimp and pork dumplings and also chicken dumplings) and scallion pancake. We had seen rave reviews around this location and we wanted to try it. As we first walked in the restaurant was super cute and quaint, and had a warm welcoming atmosphere. The staff was super informative and so helpful when we made our choices for what we were gonna have for dinner. We made the choice to choose several different dishes to share for the table and they were all phenomenal. We had the Mongolian beef which by far is 10 out of 10 and the beef noodle soup. Also amazing. With the recommendations of a server, we made great choices around the soup dumplings, and how to properly eat them with the vinegar and fresh ginger. The cucumber salad was also a great starter dish. I would highly recommend recommend this to anybody and suggest asking for suggestions of what to try. We've been to Zen several times since they've opened and have to say, I am very glad to see this more of a 'specialty Chinese cuisine' type restaurants opening in Jacksonville. Zen Dumplings serves more than dumplings, but it's specialty is more of snack food where you'll see soup dumplings, pan fried or steamed dumplings, pan fried buns, pancakes, etc... The service was friendly and on point every time and the food is consistently good. This is also the only restaurant that I know of, that serves the pan fried buns in Jacksonville. The soup dumplings is pretty decent that you'll get a nice burst of broth (careful don't get burned) when you bite into it and the filling is flavorful. If you have never had this type of food, I think definitely give it a try and see how you like it. If you have had a lot of experience in this type of cuisine (i.e. had soup dumplings or pan fried buns in other cities or countries), likely you will not be wow'd (just being truthful, they are good, but not blow-your-socks-away good). In fact, from a price point, a lot of these dishes are humble street foods or stalls in say, China, Taiwan, or Chinatown in large cities. But again, I am just happy that I have a place in Jacksonville that I can get consistently good pan fried buns when I have am craving them. read more

So based on The Scoop Jacksonville - a Facebook group - that is usually the best way to find the newest restaurants, Zen Dumpling is the place to be in JAX for soup dumplings and boba. Since the owner of Season's Dumplings on Old St. Augustine retired last year - there was an opening in our list. Stopped in for dinner tonight and found a clean, fresh and minimally decorated space with attentive servers. Ordering is done on using bilingual picture menus and paper slips. Ordering appetizers or tapas is encouraged. We chose the edamame And the spicy sweet beef short ribs. Both of which were delivered to the table almost immediately. Other reviews suggested the brown sugar milk tea with boba. Love it when you can have your dessert along with dinner! Two orders of the steamed soup dumpling sampler followed in colorful pastry pockets. Picture missing on those because we were too busy guessing if the pastry color gave away the fillings within. Hint: the yellow dumpling is chicken. Zen Dumpling makes a nice change of pace and brings a new international flavor to the Baymeadow area. read more

Coming from Southern California, there is a lot of different asian joints to check out and I have had my fair share of dumpling joints. Coming to Jacksonville, I saw that there was a lot of different dumpling places and saw this one was on peoples radar. We wanted to get a good variety of items that we normally like ordering, so we ended up trying their soup dumplings, their green beans, beef rolls, and their beef noodle soup. My personal favorite had to be their soup dumplings. Their soup was flavorful and the fillings (we got pork and chives) was very standard and tasty. The rest I was back and forth on as they were technically good. They taste very traditional (like the beef noodles) while some were different takes that I have never particularly seen before (like their beef rolls which to me felt like a very Americanized version). Despite all of that, they still tasted decent and my partner enjoyed them better than I did, just not something for my own personal palate. Would def come for the dumplings when here! read more

We were hooked on soup dumplings back in Vegas and had the privilege of dining at Din Tai Fung in Cali, and we found Zen Dumpling to be just as good. We tried various soup dumplings, appetizers, and noodles and not one was a miss. My favorite item was probably the spicy chilli wontons. We were seated quickly and service was excellent. The staff are all super friendly and were happy to help with any questions we had about the menu. There's lots of indoor seating (though when we came on a Saturday night, there definitely was a bit of a wait as the night progressed for others) and the vibe of the whole restaurant is very bright yet cozy - I loved it. I had decided to check out Zen Dimpling instead of my regular place just to see what it was about. The customers services was nice but the food was subpar, spring rolls were mediocre and didn't have any taste at least not to me( spring roll not egg roll) my fried rice was sub not that much flavor at least not what I'm accustomed to and had a large amount of corn and no other veggies. I was really disappointed with the service at Zen Dumpling. The lady who answered the phone was extremely rude and unhelpful. We specifically called ahead and made a reservation, but when we called we were told we never had one, and the situation was handled very poorly with no apology or effort to fix it. While the food itself was actually very good and flavorful, the experience was ruined by the staff. The servers were unpolite, dismissive, and made us feel like we were an inconvenience rather than paying customers. I've wanted to come here since I saw they opened, and I'm glad I was able to. We had a large table for a team birthday lunch and had no problem making reservations. They seated us quickly and instantly got us started on drinks. Our waitress explained how to check what you want on the paper provided for those at the table who had never been to a dumpling restaurant. Since I placed myself as a pro (lol), I helped out the table with what to get. When I tell you the food came out so fast, I was shocked. Everything was hot and delicious. I started with some spring rolls and loved them. I also ordered the shrimp fried rice, and that was delicious. The portion was huge, and I didn't expect it, given how low-priced the item was. I got the XLB sampler since it was an excellent way to try all six flavors of soup dumplings they offered. And, of course, when it came out, I was so hungry I forgot to get a picture. I was so excited to try this place when I saw it was opening near my work. It did NOT disappoint. I had the beef pan from dumplings and pork soup dumplings. It was more than I could finish so I took the rest home and they kept well. The server showed me the proper way to eat the soup dumplings which was very helpful. It was all so delicious. It is a tad on the pricey side but you can tell everything is fresh. The atmosphere is very relaxed but modern. If you love soup dumplings, this is the place for you. The pork soup dumplings were absolutely delicious. My 9 year old son wasn't too sure about them at first, but by the end he was begging to drink the soup from all the dumplings and even polished off the last one! The sweet rice shumai were very interesting and much more savory than I expected, though still sweet. Pair it with the red vinegar on the table and it is 'chef's kiss'! The stir fry noodles were very tasty as well and not too salty. My son was very happy to have plenty of leftovers to take home. The scallion pancake added some crispiness to our meal and is a must as well. The ambiance is very modern and clean with lots of seating. My wife and I tried this place last night since it's new and we've been looking for more authentic Chinese food. I wouldn't call this place authentic, but it was still good food. It is, however, pricey for soup dumplings. We ordered the Signature XLB Sampler. Wrappers could be a little thinner and a bit more soup in my opinion. But overall, good. We also got the stir-fried green beans and those were good. Even though it looks spicy, it wasn't. We were going to get some Dan-Dan noodles, because I have yet to find authentic ones here in Jax. But we changed our mind when we learned these were vegetarian. That's not authentic. So we opted for the Zha Jiang Noodles instead. I felt they were a little bland, but my wife liked them. I would have liked it more if they made their noodles in house. Perhaps then the sauce would stick to them more. We ordered the Beef Noodle soup as well. Again something I have yet to find a really good version of here in Jax. This is the 3rd restaurant we have tried them. I'd say these are the best we've had here so far, but pale in comparison to some my wife had in California. The service was good and they were very attentive and nice. As far as the ambiance, it was way too loud in there. I had trouble communicating with my wife. They don't have any sound insulation (no drop ceiling and hard floors). It seems there is a domino effect when it comes to loud people. You get one party that is loud, so then people around them have to talk even louder to hear each other, and on it goes. Sounded more like a night club when it got busy. If you like bustling, hipster type places, then you'd probably enjoy this environment. There menu selection is not as large as say, S&R Dim Sum, so you won't find a lot of the classics on the menu. read more
