Despite our substantial lunches, we were still tempted by the baked offerings at Zehnder's Bakery. The selection is huge, so we first lapped the store before making any final selections. We were greeted with different loaves of bread, sliced and bagged; I had eyes only for Stollen bread. Other baked goods, seasonings, jams, salad dressings, and more were there. My friend and I both ended up at the bakery case, where we picked out some treats. I ended up with cherry and apple fritters and a pineapple hand pie. The fritters were okay; I had one at the end of the day and thought it was a bit stale. The pastry for the hand pie was a bit more like shortbread than pie dough so not to my taste. However, the staff at the bakery counter were friendly and helpful. The place was buzzing but they worked quickly to accommodate all of us, even the undecided. read more

A trip to Frankenmuth would not be complete without a stop at this wonderful bakery in the basement of Zehnder's. Whenever I make a stop to Frankenmuth with my family, I always make sure to stop here to grab a pound cake or loaf as a tasty souvenir. Unfortunately, I typically come in during the late afternoon or early evening so sometimes options are slim. I have previously tried the vanilla poundcake, as well as the blueberry poundcake and love them both. My most recent adventure ended with me trying he zucchini bread loaf and it truly hit the spot! Very moist and well spiced. Very fresh, too! They take a lot of pride in their food! My only complaint about coming here is that the staff seems very rude or standoffish . I'm not sure if this is because I'm coming in closer to the end of the day, but I have always been polite and understanding. Stop in during your next visit! read more

My parents brought me here when I was a kid. My favorite thing to get was the Butterhorns. My mom also made them and once in a blue moon I'll make them. Most people think a Butterhorn is a flaky rolled up tube like a cornucopia that is filled with cream. This is a sweet yeast bread rolled like a crescent roll and topped with a butter cream icing and walnuts. Zehnder's adds a brown sugary walnut paste to the middle. This place is the bee knees!! We spoke to Pam at the bakery who helped us cure all of our sweet tooth's. You could tell she truly loved her job. Not only was she a ray of sunshine but she was a great ambassador for the entire company. She praised how well they are all treated as employees. Regardless of quality of baked goods, this is always great to here, especially for a family owned business. Now onto the sweet treats! They have the most amazing dessert cases plus many other wonderful items. I always get stollen bread which is the fruit bread to take home to freeze as I live a few hours away from Frankenmuth. I really like this bakery! It has such good homemade breads and baked goods. I drive over an hour to get my favorites often.

Let me make this very clear - these folks know what they are doing. It was very apparent that these folks are absolute expert bakers. We had two donuts, a peanut crusted raised donut and a custard filled long John. They were made with completely different doughs and each very appropriate. The peanut donut was a more structured, yeastier dough. The long John was fluffy and airy. Both were incredible. Next we had the butter horns. A touch sweet but also great. My wife had a molasses cookie which she says was the best she ever had. The only slight disappointment for me was the raisin cookie. It was well made, but had a bit of a sour dough taste too it. Well made - it's just not my thing. All in all, a great experience. read more

Bad moods, not friendly, unhelpful, especially the cashier "Haylee" inside the marketplace store. Advice for management ~ Hire people based on PERSONALITY and people-skills. Rude behavior hurts you and your reputation. Your food/stock is fine, however, your employees act like they hate their job and take it out on your paying $$$$$ customers! It's a busy time of year, but still, if you're working with the public you need to slap a smile on your face no matter what. And the Napoleon we bought was so old we couldn't eat it. Zehnder's is not just a bakery, but a tourist complex that includes a huge restaurant, bakery, and gift shop. They also own a nearby golf course and water park. This complex is set on the main street in downtown Frankenmuth. For many people, Zhehnder's or Barvarian Inn (across the street) are the reason they come to vacation in Frankenmuth. Their self-proclaimed "World's Best Chicken Dinners" have their own cult following. The dinners include fried chicken, buttered noodles, mashed potatoes, and many other old world side dishes. Forget counting calories here. Zehnder's uses butter in the way other restaurants use water. I imagine this is what Paula Deen's heaven looks like. The restaurant on the top floor features a variety of themed rooms that all cater to family style dining. The lower lever features the bakeries and gift shops. The bakery includes every baked good imaginable! Cakes, donuts, bread, pies, and more! If you happen to be in Frankenmuth, this is the default place for dinner. For major holidays it can become quite packed. Even for lesser holidays, such as Mother's Day brunch, it will fill up fast. read more

I think calling this spot a bakery is somewhat of a misnomer! It's HUGE! Bakery, shop, restaurant, etc etc. Really fun visit. I only tried some of the baked goods and chocolates, but they were delicious and reasonably priced. The spot was packed even early on a Sunday. The staff was super friendly and accommodating and I liked that there were plenty of check out counters all over the place. We took a swing by the history wall upstairs and it was quite a good read! There isn't much to dislike as far as the Zehnder's Bakery is concerned (well, there is one thing I don't like, but more on that little tidbit later on). The baked goods are, for the most part, high quality and are worth the money (let's be honest, Zehnder's isn't exactly super cheap). If you're going to go out to Frankenmuth, a visit the bakery downstairs is often a "must." Encompassing much more than just a few baked goods, the bakery is part of the larger hodgepodge of retail shops located in the basement of the Bavarian Inn. Along with baked goods, there are various retail areas, including a wine and beer shop, a few chocolate confectioners and candy shops and a few different souvenir shops. The bakery is a big part of all this, selling freshly-baked breads, pies, cakes, pretzels, etc. For me, they bake some of the best Stolen bread around. It's delicious and I usually pick up a loaf when shopping. That stuff nearly qualifies as addictive. I love it and can't get enough of it. Many bakeries make Stolen bread, but usually they aren't quite as nice as Zehnder's bread. Their other fresh-baked breads are great, too. Most of the time, I check their sale rack just to find out what they have on sale, but it's usually empty! Darn. Even when the regular inventory appears to be low, just wait around a few minutes and bam, they will have more freshly-baked breads out to replenish their shelves. As for the cookies, I think they're great. They're usually working hard, baking up fresh batches. I absolutely recommend them, but not as much as the chocolate bark they sell. That stuff is amazing. They're always pretty free with the samples, especially of the chocolate bark. I never pass that up. I've only had their pies in the restaurant, but those are good, too, but their price tag on them in bakery case does seem a bit high. Honestly, I'd say they're good, but maybe not entirely worth the money. The one thing I don't care for (and maybe I'm odd for thinking this way) is their homemade pretzels. I don't know what it is, but they just aren't good. Maybe I'm weird, maybe I'm not, but I really don't like them. Every single time I get one, they are stale and tasted like they were made days ago. I don't get it, but it really is what it is. To each their own, I guess. To me, they are't worth the money and I'd rather get a super salty mall pretzel anytime. Go figure. I really don't care for those pretzels at all. If I'm weird, then I'm weird. I don't care. I'll take a middle of the mall pretzel any day. The service is usually quick and courteous, though not overly friendly, which I attribute to the staff just wanting to get people in and out. Don't forget to tour the rest of the shops. The wine shop is excellent and they have some fine chocolates in the candy shops around the corner. The rest of the gift shops run the gamut from kitschy collectibles, Bavarian gear, toys, and decor to jewelry, accessories, monogrammed merchandise, and clothes. read more

We were in Frankenmuth on a bit of a "spur of the moment" trip - so hadn't put a lot of research into things - read some brochures, looked on yelp etc., but hadn't noticed anything in particular about the bakery. Located in the basement of Zhender's Market Place, and way at the back, I'm glad we even noticed it - we were actually trying to find a place to go for breakfast, and ended up stuffing ourselves on pastries instead. Lots of choice and all the bakery items we tried were fresh and good. We tried apple fritters, sticky buns, cupcakes and oh! the ginormous brownie was great - big enough to split amongst 4 people and everyone would feel happy they got a good sized treat. The other counter in the area had chocolate type goodies and desserts. We didn't try anything, but we would have like to! Gotta go back. Coffee was fine. (We like really strong coffee - it wasn't anything special to us but at least it wasn't weak!). They only had one table to sit down and eat at - so it would have been nice to have a bit more cafe seating there. Would I recommend - for sure - if you like baked goods, it's worth the wander down to the back of the basement. Would I return - yes, and I'd allow time to browse through their gourmet cooking supplies, located next to the bakery too. read more
