Yes, there's not much room for in-store dining (2-3 tables) but if you come here on a Sunday afternoon, the odds are with you that you'll be able to sit down, smell the awesome aromas coming from the kitchen and enjoy a well-prepared meal that will transport you halfway around the world. But, yes, I would recommend take out. This is a VERY small operation, so delivery probably is not your best option. As soon as my friend and I sat down, the nice kid (he was young, not like 'call CPS' young, but, like 19) got up, asked us if this was our first time here and explained some of the more popular items of the menu. We told him that I was hungry, she was not and that we wanted dishes that represented what Zebda could do. He told us, 'no problem.' I liked the confidence. The meal began with a sweet mint tea. Made in-house, this tea is the blessed union of Big Mama from Jackson, MS and Tae Tae from the Middle East. Awesome. Minty Sweet Tea. Homemade. I could have drank a gallon. Get it hot or cold but just get it. For the lady, she ordered the kefta pizza. Topped with ample amounts of the lamb/beef mixture, this flatbread popped from the vegetables. Based from a tomato confit (what??), the potato and roasted peppers transformed this from a regular pizza to one that you need to try. Not being that partial to beef, I didn't have as much opportunity to devour her meal as I wanted. Slightly defeated, I was left to concentrate on my dish. Having had a hard time deciding, my young guide led me to the stuffed chicken and I am so glad he did. And before you roll your eyes at a chicken dish, let me inform you that this chicken was stuffed with a soft cheese (dgebna?), caramelized apples, roasted grapes AND walnuts. Did you read correctly? All of that stuff was IN the chicken? Now, can you get off my back about ordering a chicken dish? And this meaty masterpiece was served over a bed of rapini. I was truly blown away by the flavor combination. The chicken, which could have just been a vessel, was tender, seasoned and buttery. Cheese, apples and nuts are always a good combo and the texture/taste profiles only added to the meat. But the revelation, for me, was the roasted grapes. Perhaps I'm late, but I never thought to roast grapes. I've baked them but never roasted them. I'm a fan. I'm a big fan. I could have eaten a bowl of just the roasted grapes. If you get this dish (and, you should) make sure to add a bite of rapini with the meat. The balance is perfect. Stuffed and in a food afterglow, it was time to get the check and leave. But, our young gun had an extra surprise for us: free cookies! Much like my blue felty counterpart, C. Monster, I can't resist cookies. I can't. I've ordered from Zebda more times than I care to admit and what's worse? I order almost the same thing every time! I usually get the tandoori chicken wrap. The chicken is always cooked perfectly and I love the "bread" it's served on. The baked sweet potato with cardamom whipped butter is great. The brie cigars, umm...hello? Fried brie? Yes, please...with apricot chutney on top. I've also sampled a trio of spreads which were all pretty tasty. No meal is complete without dessert! I tried to order a lemon tart once, but sadly they were out. The guy who called to inform me was super sweet and gave me TWO dessert to make up for it! The madelines are wonderful. The chocolate mousse cake was decadent....I personally would skip the tiramisu though. Delivery is always prompt and super friendly. Yes, friendly delivery drivers DO exist in the city. I had ordered from there once before and it was really terrific, so a repeat performance seemed like a great idea. I ordered thru GrubHub, so I got the email notification of delivery time. After a bit, the phone rang and it was Zebda calling to say they would be 5 to 10 minutes late. He apologized and said he had put in a complementary dessert. I was blown away by the courtesy. I have had rather poor customer service experiences lately and this attention to detail was so refreshing. In reality they were only four minutes late. I would never have noticed. The food was delicious. Mom had the salmon salad. The fish was perfectly prepared and the salad base was so full of variety and unusual components like sweet potato and grilled onions amid the assortment of field greens. I had the Tandoori Chicken Sandwich. It was deeeeeeelicious!!!!!! BTW, the free dessert was stuffed dates and they were wonderful. That thoughtful gesture has bought them a loyal customer. The irony of having lived a block away from the corner of Elston and Pulaski for 40+ years, and then moving just before Zebda came into the neighborhood is not lost on me. Frankly I hadn't found much to miss in the old neighborhood over the last year (Taxco being a notable exception) but now that Zebda has opened, I think I'll be going back. Trying this place was a total fluke. Originally we were going to order from Shokran Cafe but found it no longer delivered, so we opted for Zebda and were repaid with a WOW-level meal big enough for four or five. We ordered "The Plate" a combo of hummus, falafel, Jerusalem salad and stuffed grape leaves, all of which were just excellent. The falafel I particularly liked as it was fluffy on the inside like the falafel from Couscous house, but quite crisp on the outside. We also had the chicken curry salad which had an amazingly well-balanced flavor and which was accompanied by caramelized figs, roasted grapes, toasted almonds and mixed greens with a balsamic dressing. There were also onions which were caramelized on one edge but which, in spite of being cooked, retained just enough crunch to make them really fresh and unusual. Entrees were Tagine aux olives, a slow-cooked braise of beef with olives and potatoes in a saffron sauce. I don't normally think of beef and saffron together but it worked, and the olives cooked that way retained their briny quality but also showed their true fruit nature quite clearly with a warm sweet undertone. Potatoes were browned on the outside, flaky inside as all good potatoes should be. Also appearing was the Apricot chicken, a very aromatic dish of chicken breast cooked with apricot-almond butter, making it sweet and savory by turns, and accompanied by rapini with preserved lemon and basmati rice. For dessert we split a Reine de Saba cake. Now I'm almost 60 years old and only once before had I ever seen Reine de Saba at a restaurant -- the Baker's Rooms/Ovens of Brittany in Madison Wisconsin, now sadly closed. I remembered it as a slice of heaven on a plate and while I recognize that memory can certainly play you false, I have to confess that Zebda's Reine de Saba was not what I remembered. It was damn good, in fact some truly excellent chocolate case with a mousselike chocolate cream on top, but it wasn't the Reine de Saba I remembered. However, it wouldn't be fair for me to mark them down just for not serving the cake of memory, so the restaurant gets full marks for what really was an awesomely good meal. I trust that tomorrow's lunch of leftovers will be really excellent, too. read more

I've eaten in at Zebda and ordered delivery. In either case you should know that it's a REALLY small joint, and their delivery is limited by the few people that work there. They did tell me that they try to be honest about their delivery time - and they were. On the other hand, they'll deliver anywhere if you give them time. Ok, now on to the food. HOLY HELL, IT'S DELICIOUS. It's like discovering that God is real. You want to go run and shake every person worshiping at the altars to their false deities and tell them that you have found the WAY and the TRUTH and the LIGHT. In a world where there is Zebda, you wonder why anyone else bothers. I've eaten my way through the cuisines of N. Africa and the Middle East. What's interesting about Zebda is the fusion ideas -- like a merguez panini or the couscous crusted salmon with preserved lemon butter. It's all familiar ingredients and yet prepared in a way that tastes like very little else on the culinary landscape. So you could go somewhere else. Or you could have the pastilla, a sandwich on m'semme and a flan for dessert. And maybe open yourself up to the above mentioned religious experience, combined something a little more sensual and maybe that feeling you had when you saw Episode IV in the theater the first time. Okay, so I want the Zebda that everyone is raving about! We found Zebda through Grubhub.com and fell in love with the menu and the reviews. We did not, however, fall in love with the food. Boo Zebda, boo.. We placed our order at 9:30 and the driver showed up at 11:00 (we were told 45 minutes). Perhaps the food suffered from the extended trip. The falafel were mush balls with zero flavor. I hate to say it, but this is the WORST falafel I've ever encountered (I think "gross" sums it up perfectly). On top of that the "sandwich" included a greasy, cold flavorless "pita." But all is not lost...I'm sure my boyfriend's brother can use it as a frisbee for his ultimate frisbee league. We also ordered the "platter" with extra pita. We did not receive the extra pita. Bummer. When we informed the driver he explained that the restaurant was closed and there was nothing he could do and then ran off. I mean really... Here I am...left hungry, angry and sad. I have ordered food from Zebda twice. Once for take out, once for delivery. The first time there was a lone woman working who prepared our orders. My friend ordered a veggie pastilla (stuffed pastry) and I ordered chicken. They both came with couscous. The preparation took a very long time, much longer than I expected. The worst part was that the interior is barren to extreme utilitarianism. No place to sit. Nothing to look at. Most of the display cases stingily stocked. Horrible. I get this is a small deli but please. Paint the walls, put the piles of papers away...do something! When we got to my friends house, the pastillas were exactly the same. Good, but when you are expecting chicken its a little disappointing. The couscous was absolutely delicious however, so I gave them a pass on the error. The second time we had delivery. This time we order the brie cigars (tasty, but small). I get the chicken tandoori sandwich. Delivery took over 90 minutes, and when we did get the food it was almost cold. The driver blamed traffic and that we would get "a discount" the next time we ordered. Well, I havent ordered since then so I would be interested to know if this discount exists and how much it is for. So far things have just been very mediocre. Excellent food and great value. Primarily a takeout spot but there are two tables and a couple of chairs to eat in, which is what we did. We got a pretty decent spread of stuff. Started with goat cheese appetizer that was excellent, really enjoyed the fig spread it came with. We also got a variety of dip type spreads including their babaghanoush (tasted better the next day, Salmon Spread (tasty and would actually be great on bagels) & something else was also good maybe veggie something. Picked up food from here for Valentine's Day. I still remember this as one of the best meals I've had this year. There are a couple of tables here, but this is really a takeout place. Our order took a little while, but it was worth the wait for fresh food. I'm a big fan of Middle Eastern and North African food and this did not disappoint. I tried the eggplant sandwich, wild mushrooms and spinach salad. Everything was delicious. The wild mushrooms had a sweet, not salty, taste, perhaps they were sauteed in a vinaigrette. Amazing. Zebda is AMAZING! We've been here 4 times since discovering it driving down Elston a few months ago. Ordered carry out thrice and ate in once. While it's handy for carryout, eating there is much more appealing. They have a cozy little restaurant with friendly staff and a case full of delicious and homemade sweets to tempt you after your meal. Highlights: the veggie pizza, Merguez sandwich (yum!), lamb couscous, beef tagine (outstanding, garlicky, zesty olive based sauce!!!), chicken sandwich, and white bean soup. Can't wait to go back and try their salmon plate, lemon cake (also homemade) and a cup of black tea w/ honey. Aside from the quality of the food and the atmosphere and staff, we appreciate how affordable and honest this place is: it's modest, tidy, and the owners actually care about your experience. Unlike so many new restaurants around these, they're much more interested in the customer having a good meal than they are about making a hefty profit. Eventually I will actually visit this place and then I'll be able to update this with a review of the location/staff/etc. Right now I can only talk about the food because I've only ordered delivery from here through grubhub. They have a $10 delivery minimum and a $2 delivery charge (at least on grubhub). Definitely not bad and you can get a good amount of food from that. The food is DELICIOUS. I have only had one thing that I didn't like - the brie cigars were basically just fried something with little flavor and no sign of the creaminess of brie. Mostly, though, the flavor combinations are innovative and wonderful. Some of my favorite dishes: Pastilles, Trio of spreads(i like smoked salmon pate, eggplant caviar and hummus), couscous salad, grilled chicken panini, and their Kefta pizza which I ate over the course of 3 meals and was $5. The portions are large and it's so yummy that writing about it made me feel like one of Pavlov's dogs when the bell rang. read more

Last night I ordered the grilled veggie pizza and selection of dips with crudites via Grub Hub. On Grub Hub, I asked if they could substitute the crudites with pita bread (they have done this successfully before). So, it's time for the food to be delivered and they are a no show. They do finally they show up. The "roasted veggie" pizza had only chopped mushrooms and zuchini and was cold. And of course, the crudite came with not one pita in site. I really cannot say enough good things about this place. This is definitely a place for carrryout or delivery but it is WELL worth it. Hubby loves the "The Plate" appetizer, he usual orders this as his meal. On our previous visit I ordered the Stuffed Chicken, it was delicious, flavorful and moist, loved the Rapini that it comes on, the whole dish is well balanced and very yummy! However, this time I tried the Balsamic Glazed Steak Sandwich and I almost went into a food trance, this sandwich was so good that even as I sit here almost too full, I would be tempted to go get another one. Firstly, it was huge, you could easily share though, I encourage you not to for fear of family breakups over who gets the biggest half! The baguette was nicely crisp on the outside, yet soft and chewy on the inside. The steak is nicely charred yet juicy and flavorful, the mushrooms, onions and tomatoes are nicely carmelized and you get a nice tang of the vinegar. I also ordered the Roasted Saffron Potatoes, which were nicely flavored with little bits of roasted garlic and it was a nice sized portion. I strongly encourage you to try this place, it is not the cheapest but the quality and portions of the food more than make it worth it! So I was super excited to find a well reviewed Mediterranean place that was relatively cheap, in my neighborhood, and also delivered. I was less excited about the food. I tried the chicken wrap, the falafel sandwich, and the trio of dips. The chicken wrap was the best part of the meal actually. The falafel were huge and really bland, actually the entire falafel sandwich was flavorless. For the trio of dips, we got the eggplant caviar, the hummus, and the goat cheese. They were all nothing special, and the goat cheese one was way more of cream cheese. The bread that the sandwiches were on was very good, however. I wasn't ready to try Zebda's main lunch items, so just sampled a couple of their side dishes: hummus and a dip of spinach and sun dried tomatoes. I was offered a choice of pita bread or pita chips and chose the pita bread half-rounds. After I got them home, I waited until they got a little closer to room temperature before tasting them. The hummus was surprising and disappointing because it was extremely chunky, with almost no smooth, ground chick pea mixture to bind together the whole chick peas, garlic, chunks of orange rind (?) or perhaps a root vegetable, and small strips of a stalk vegetable like ramps or leeks. So it was nearly impossible to eat in the traditional "dipping" method that I've always eaten hummus with; using torn pieces of the pita bread as almost a spoon. Instead, had to gather the mixture with a bread knife and then spread it on top of the pita. The hummus also had a very orange color and had a very bitter after taste. Not the most appetizing hummus I've ever had. The so-called Spinach and Sun-dried Tomator DIP, was like the hummus, more of a spread rather than a dip. Again, it was extremely chunky, with the same stalk vegetable chunks as used in the hummus. This time, the binder was a off-white, but seemingly non-dairy spread, which had a starchier texture. I'm planning to take the remainder of each spread and put them through the blender separately to get a smoother mixture. I'll give Zebda another try and taste their main dishes next time. read more

I have a little trouble understanding how people can give Zebda less than five stars. In fact, I'm a little irked that I have to give them less than six stars, because Zebda is certainly better than many of the places which have earned five stars from me. Zebda describes their food as "gourmet." Seems like a pretty meaningless term, but I'll tell you how I felt when I first opened the container and saw what sort of food they had given me. I felt sorrow. I wish I had nicer plates and glasses. In fact, I wish I had nicer furniture - Zebda's food is the sort for place settings and candles and soft music. But we ate our food with gusto, sitting cross legged on the couch and off my mismatched corningware. And what wonderful food it was - perfect lamb kebabs over white beans with a sweet date chutney on the side, caramelized salmon with roasted sweet potatoes and red peppers and tomato confit on a pile of fresh greens. The side of marinated grilled vegetables, still warm and flavorful - the perfect ghribia with a touch of salt in them, firm buttery bread with a good hard crust. And they didn't cheat, even a single bit - they didn't dump extra virgin olive oil or butter or goat cheese over everything for taste. They didn't skimp or take shortcuts, either. Just perfectly balanced, flavorful food. Their famous Reine de Saba, unfortunately, is unavailable - the chef that makes it is in Morocco, and I've been told they're not even sure if he's coming back. And though they have recipe, they've decided no one can make it as well as he can, so they won't serve it. I respect their decision. Zebda closed for a few months for an unknown reason, but they are OPEN again. I'm not sure why they closed, but when they did I went through major withdrawal. In the Irving Park/Albany Park area there are not a ton of great delivery options. Zebda was always my healthy/tasty/impress my friends delivery option. It's a little place you may pass without noticing, but I have to say that the food is quite good! A girlfriend and I checked out Zebda because we were looking for somewhere between our neighborhoods. I walked in and was surprised by how busy it was at 6:30PM on a Thursday. There was one table open, so I sat there waiting for my friend. I was the only one there not of Middle Eastern/African descent (just speaking the truth so nobody is surprised when they walk in), but a staff member came up to me and made me feel welcomed. My friend arrived and we ordered the tandoori chicken sandwich and the grilled chicken panini (don't you LOVE friends that you can split dishes with so that you can try more than one dish?!). They came with sides, and we got the hummus and their soup. The sides were amazing! The pita bread that came with it was warm and perfect. I enjoyed the grilled chicken panini more than the tandoori chicken sandwich, but I will admit I was almost full by the time we switched plates...so that may make me slightly biased. They have amazing looking desserts, but I had absolutely no room. Next time, I'm going to make sure I have room! Oh and the crowd slowly left, so by the time I was leaving around 8:30, we were the only ones there. P.S. I checked in and it had a 10% off coupon, but Zebda staff report that it's an error. I just had a holiday party for 54 guests in my home. Zebda catered it. The food was fantastic, the guests loved it all, and very reasonably priced. The chef, Katie Garcia, was easy to work with. She understood my needs (and budget limit) and offered creative choices. We love Zebda food for dinner any night - the healthy, fresh, TASTY salad , the creativity Chef Garcia brings to every dish - so many vegetarian-freindly choices. Since the food was delivered right on time, and attractively displayed, I'd give Zebda 6 stars if I could. read more

Zebda is phenomenal. I used to live about a half mile from here, and I loved that they were still open when I got out of my night classes. The food is consistently surprising, in a great way! I usually got one of their chicken sandwiches and a lentil soup, for about $6. (You can switch their seasoned fries, which are also good, for a soup.) If you happen to go on a night where they have tiramisu in their pastry shelf, GET IT. Their tiramisu knocked me out of my socks. Some of the other pastries were very unusual--I got some kind of Moroccan, bright pink donut that was very dense with a core of honey inside. Also, it had edible glitter on it(??), lol. I've never had anything like it before or since. Sadly I never got a chance to try their coffee, so I'mma make a point to do that soon. My go-to delivery place. The price to quality to quantity of food ratio is perfect! I love the curry chicken salad (i get it as a side...total left-overs), the kefta pizza and the reine de saba (the fact that this amazing chocolate cake has be unavailable for several months has tested my loyalty!). The stuffed grape leaves are actually slightly sweet (yum!) and I wish you could get the Jerusalem salad as a side! Honestly, no matter what I try, I've never been disappointed. It not exactly the place to dine in- there is a table and chairs and the staff was very nice when I did take out, so it is an *option*, but the feel of the place is a take out counter. read more

$7.80 for a grilled chicken pannini, potato salad, & flatbread The pannini had grilled chicken, brie, carmelized shallots, and fresh spinach. Doesn't it sound like something you would get at an upscale restaurant? It tasted like it was, but without the prices. The sandwich is big enough for 2 meals and the food doesn't taste heavy. I'm very particular about potato salad and this was one heck of a potato salad! Creamy & very flavorful. The homemade flatbread was also very good. It was flaky and chewy. They warm it up on a press for you and it goes really well with any of the sides. It can be easy to miss the humble looking store bc there isn't a big sign. I love places like this because it just goes to show that you don't have to pay a lot for really good food. I'd definitely go back and try the other items. read more

I was feeling too lazy to cook this weekend and decided to finally give Zebda a shot-after all they even deliver to my place (rare and awesome!) I was NOT at all disappointed. We ordered the Brie cigars with fig and apricot chutney, the falafel sandwich, the lamb brochette and the meatball sandwich. They were all amazing. I accidentally stumbled upon this gem as I was looking for food late at night. I absolutely loved the hot roasted sweet potatoe. I also love their chicken salad. My husband loves the tajine and the bread is freshly prepared goodness. If the place wasnt always packed with locals(mostly men)who order and sit for hours....this place would have 5 stars. read more

I live in the neighborhood and have ordered quite a few times different items off the menu which were all really, really good. I will agree that their falafel is not the best, but that's the only flaw. Their prices are super reasonable, they are friendly and delivery is fast. read more

Zebda is excellent. Period. I discovered Zebda through GrubHub when I was sick at home one day, and even in the shape I was in the food made me stop and think "Wow... this is *really* tasty!" I order delivery from them frequently now, and the food has always been fresh, tasty, and very reasonably priced. The Tandoori chicken sandwich is definitely good, but you should try the others as well... The chicken panini with brie, caramalized shallots, spinach and dijon was very well done, and has become one of my favorites. As to the comments about it not being a dine in place - well, it is billed as a "Modern Mediterranean Deli" . Deli's usually are a take-out kinda place with few tables... Seriously though, do yourself a favor and try Zebda out. It really is worth it! read more

I've ordered from Zebda via GrubHub twice. Both times I got "The Plate", which has hummus, tabouleh, two falafel balls, Jerusalem salad and stuffed grape leaves. It comes with pita bread. I forgot from the first time that the Jerusalem salad seemed to have yogurt in it, so I didn't eat it. Everything else on the plate seemed vegan-friendly though. You could order each of the items as individual sides instead. The steamed rapini side dish, which I've also ordered both times, is delicious. It has garlic and chunks of preserved lemons. Maybe next time I'll try something new. There is a grilled eggplant with baba ghanoush sandwich that sounds pretty good. A few of the items seem almost vegan, but not quite. The dressing on their falafel sandwich has cheese in it, and I couldn't figure out on my app how to request no dressing. They have a chickpea soup, harrira, made with chicken stock. Their grilled tofu Caesar salad has a non-dairy dressing but parmesan croutons. Overall the food seemed to have a little more of a gourmet touch compared to some other Middle Eastern/Mediterranean restaurants. I'd order from here again. read more
