My family came here after a day in Yellowstone Park and none of us enjoyed our entrees. We had nachos, enchiladas, and a fajita salad. My salad could hardly be called a salad, there was so little lettuce, and the nachos were buried under an insane amount of lettuce. And the "nachos" didn't even have any melted cheese! The enchiladas had an odd spice and we didn't finish them. We liked the chips and salsa, and the queso was pretty good. The service was ok, but we had to ask for straws and utensils. The food here is a great and the only thing better is the service. The menu has numerous options for whatever you are feeling and the drink options match. The only reason this isn't a 5 star is the price of the food. I understand that Cody is a tourist town and prices tend to be higher... but the price doesn't match the quantity of food you get, IMO. This restaurant has changed ownership and they seems to be struggling to maintain the quality of the previous owner. The food is not up to the standard of the previous owners and has increased in price. We have tried it twice now and will not be returning. We are here visiting Cody for 8 days and the first day we arrived after a 4 hour trip we were hungry. We saw Zapata's on the way in and read some of the reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a try. I ordered a strawberry margarita that came out looking more like a smoothie and boy was it good. My husband ordered the Baja fish tacos and I ordered the chicken flautas. We weren't disappointed. This place totally hit the spot after a full day flying to Wyoming from the New England. It offered a large menu of quality "Tex-Mex comfort food" and most importantly, margaritas and ice-cold beers. The service was great, thanks to a friendly waiter who gave us lots of sightseeing tips, along with advice for what to order. Went there for my birthday and the waiter was rude to my husband the whole time which ruined the experience. So we thought the food would makeup for it and when I asked the waiter about the food in an arrogant way he said everything was excellent. Waitress was overwhelmed with several tables and it took a while to get our drinks. Had chips and salsa way before our drinks ever came. There was not a lot of items on the menu to choose from, but don't ask for anything special on the menu as the owner will not have it. You only can go by what is on menu. If you want cheese on your burrito you have to pay extra for a bowl of cheese. God forbid you ask for more chips and salsa as she wanted to charge us for them. . The Owner definitely needs a lesson in customer service. The poor waitress felt bad but she didn't want to loose her job. My niece and her boyfriend ordered two Margaritas which were 2 for $10. All I can say is wow! Sometimes I go on yelp and I look at the 5 star reviews and also the 1 star reviews and see what others say about the place. I never ever read reviews before I eat only after and many times after I post my review so I am not biased or persuaded to say things I really don't mean to, but this place is terrible. It is almost like they say Hey I dare you to go somewhere else and eat because they no the place across the street is not much better. We were not impressed with the rude waitress that we had or anyone else that we had came across. It wasn't until I made a comment to my wife about how our waitress had issues that she heard me and started to at least try and smile. Every time we asked her about something on the menu she didn't have clue and she would barely speak a word to us. We got our chips and they appeared to be right out of a bag and it must have been an expensive bag because we only got one bowl everything after that was extra. Drinks were nice and cold but don't expect more then 1 refill without having to pay. I got the ice tea so I had unlimited refills. I ordered two tacos, one beef and one chicken and it came with beans and rice. Wife ordered fish tacos. My tacos came and I took a bite out of the chicken one. It was the most unflavored chicken I ever had. I wonder if they ever heard of chorizo or chili powder or maybe salt. I swear it tasted like the chicken I boil for my dog. The beef was very good I must say. The taco shells had a rust color to them and I took a bite out of the taco and it totally fell apart, both tacos did the same so now I had nachos. Now here is the worse part. I looked at and tasted my rice and I immediately thought how much it looked like and tasted like boxed rice. I was like no friggin way that cant be. My wife took a bite out of her rice and we both laughed. She said it was Zattarains boxed rice. Both of us thought the same thing!! So I look at it like this, either they were making boxed rice and that is totally silly or there rice is so bad it resembles box rice which might even be worse. The beans were also pretty nasty, almost like from a can of pintos. The servings were a mere two or three table spoons of each and that's a good thing because I wouldn't want to waste when I threw away. I asked the speechless waitress if the owner was Mexican and she said she used to live in New Mexico, well that makes no sense. I am sure many many people that live there cant cook and she was one of them. OMG maybe perhaps the worse food I ever paid for. I tipped that gal, because that is what I do, but it was so dang hard. Just finished a wonderful lunch served by a great waiter, Shanny. My Chili Verde with Pork and Rich's 1800's Style Chili Rellenos were wonderful and the sides of Mexican corn and pinto beans were excellent as well. The chili was thick and rich and loaded with green chilies and pork and just enough melted cheese on top. Rich's rellenos were different than we've ever had - a two-egg omelette with a hatch chili inside and green sauce on top. Mmm. Next time I want to try the fish tacos - they sound great. We have had Mexican, Tex-Mex, and New Mexican food i in 33 states and this was some of the best yet. read more

The service was excellent from the hostess to the waitress. Everybody was so friendly. On the other hand, the food was not that great. Everything my table ordered was bland with the exception of the poppers; they were pretty decent. I ordered a taco salad with shredded beef and just didn't have the flavor I was expecting. To be honest, I think Taco Bell has more flavor than this food and I don't even like fast food. My one friend ordered some beef dish for about $20 and barely touched it. He said it wasn't edible. Mine was, so I would say the food is just average. The waitress asked us how the meal was before we left. We were honest and told her it wasn't that good. She apologized. My first time in was during the Fourth of July and we got to have the most delicious breakfast burritos with the best salsa. Super fresh and perfectly spicy. So... I thought about that burrito for about 24 hours and then had to go back for dinner ASAP. We got to sit outside which was nice and we had an awesome meal. It would be hard for one to go to a Mexican Restaurant in Cody with high hopes, but Zapata's but a happy surprise. The first thing that was nice was the salsa. They make it themselves, and it was a delicious and spicy. In fact, it was so good, I bought a bottle to take home. The waiter was attentive without being pushy, and helpful, which is always nice. I wanted to change up the menu a bit by making fish fajitas instead of fish tacos, which they agreed to do. They weren't amazing but were still pretty darn good. Fist things first, I'm in Cody for work, if I wasn't I would not come to this town. It is a putrid scab on the landscape of Wyoming. If you are heading to Yellowstone, go through Jackson Hole (Only slightly better) or Bozeman (much better). It is ugly, devoid of any authenticity, every building is a stucco strip center dressed up in kitsch trying to be something its not. Add to that the sneers of the locals who dare you to say anything bad about their lord and master Trump or Merica! and you get the picture! I had the misfortune of wasting money at Zapatas, I would have been better off going to Taco Bell (which I hate) the food would have been better. The place is dirty, has corny nick knacks thrown up all over and staff that are trying but the term lipstick on a pig comes to mind or even better, mutton dressed as lamb. The staff is only as good as the management and the back house operation, and both fail miserably. They try, but you can tell they are not paid well so the effort is minimal. It ain't cheap either. I was given the chips and salsa but don't you dare eat more than 1 basket because they are not botomless. I like a better quality tequila so I ordered the top shelf marg.....Sweet Jesus, all saccharine and no substance and at $13.75 it was robbery. Took 15 minutes to get too. I ordered the enchiladas which weren't actually enchiladas, just soft shell tacos limped over on their side smothered in a watery green chili along side a teaspoonfull of dry rice and runny refried beans. If you call them Enchiladas, ffs make the effort and make actual enchiladas not soft tacos on their side. This type of laziness just about sums up this dump. Enough to get the tourists in, the serve them slop and rip them off. They most likely won't be back. It sums up Cody too, by the time the rubes get there, they don't have much choice, its hours to anywhere else so the Hotels will rip you off, the restaurants will rip you off, and the Locals will piss you off. We just had a great meal at Zapata's. Our server, Logan was exceptional. We were in a party of 8 people and everyone enjoyed their dinner.

The amount of food on fajitas for two was less than a single at every restaraunt I have been too. My son ate the chicken fajita for two by himself and asked to stop for a burger after. Barely got 3 fajitas wraps!! The southwest chili was worst I have ever had. My dads steak burrito had one piece of steak in it Overall very poor taste and quality. Not Good. I have been to a lot of Mexican Restaurants over time. And there are a few in Cody. This one is the worst. I am local to Cody, and gave them a try a couple years ago. I don't remember what I got, but I know I didn't enjoy like the food. Being as fair minded as I could be, I gave them another chance. This time I got the taco salad. How do you mess up a taco salad? Well, they found a way to answer this question in spades. It just wasn't good. I've talked to others and they don't like the food either. Their patio is often busy, and I don't understand it. I can only chalk it up to tourists that don't know any better (eat there, and never go back). Zapata's shuts down during the winter, although other places in town do too. The smothered chimichanga was good. Staff wasn't super attentive when I arrived, but it was during a slow time of day in the middle of the week. We were just had they were open. Went into Zapata's for a late lunch on Saturday while vacationing. Hostess seated us right away and made sure table would accommodate my wife's wheelchair. Waiter showed up right away. Took drink order a brought while we looked st menu. No lunch menu. Menu was pleasantly limited. Had both specialities and combo meals but only around six of each. I ordered enchiladas. One shredded beef with red sauce and one chicken with green chili sauce. Wife ordered chicken flautas with red sauce. Food came in under 15 mins. All products had generous portions of meat. Flautas were crispy. Sauces were well seasoned on the medium hot side. Waiter was attentive but not pushy. Overall an excellent experience. Caution: this isn't mexitex commercial mass produced Mexican food. It's much better! read more

We chose this restaurant partly because it was within walking distance of our hotel. We were not disappointed. The decor is attractive and the staff does a good job. The hostess kept us informed about the status of our table and the server was friendly and efficient. The portion sizes are moderate and the prices are moderate. The enchiladas are worth the price. Beef enchiladas actually contain shredded beef and pork enchiladas actually contain chunks of pork. Our only complaint is that the menu does not contain any kind of combination plate. read more

Absolutely the worst Mexican food experience ever in my 45 years of life!! We are from Highland Park, California----where they have real Mexican food!! Driving through and visiting the Cody Museum and Mount Rushmore, a family of six, looking for some good food, good service, as we were tired and hungry from lots of driving!! The chips were cold, out of a bag from Von's I think?! The cheese in my daughters enchilada was not even melted. The salsa tasted like ketchup with onions and salt added for an awful flavor. We were one of the last families served, but that is no excuse for the awful treatment our family received. Our complaints were shrugged off. It was as if we were lucky to be getting food anywhere and they made sure to make us feel that way!! They were smirking, knowing we were from California, and making us NOT feel welcomed at all!! My wife gave them a tip.......I had my son grab it before we left!! I love food!! I love restaurants!! We pride ourselves as being a family of six that knows how to act in a restaurant!! This place gets my lowest rating possible......if there was a zero stars I would select that!! I have never had a worse eating experience in my life at Zapata's. Better than across the street, tourist prices but not bad for WY. Save ur money and eat Taco Bell . We ordered a pathetic $30 pitcher of margaritas and it came in a vat that would not pour correctly. Your better off getting a bucket o beer., it cheaper and tastes better. The food was average Mexican, nothing to extravagant. Frank's Red Hot Sauce looked ancient. Gloppy, odd colored...gross. Despite my concerns. I ordered a safe sounding taco. The beef was flavorless, corn was weird. Enough said. our party had a wide range of dishes, all were very blah. there was a lot going on on the plates the tastes were not there, in fact everything tasted the same, ....tasteless... service was fine, nothing great and cody is well known for terrible service, but the food was nothing t make you finish your order much less ever go back. we had eaten the night before at La Comida and wish we had all just gone back to La Comida!! HILARIOUS that the owner thinks she waited on us and remembers us not being happy with the food!!! NO, sweatheart, we are ANOTHER party that wasn't happy with the low quality food! I never changed our order mid stream, we let our friends order for us, they think the food is good, we never had been there before and will never be back.
