New to the Hatch street area, Zambrero looks great inside. Food with a mission, buy a meal and they donate a meal. Like Toms for your belly!
On their first day they were giving their food away. No better way to test out the service, iron out any wrinkles and get the staff trained up in burrito construction. Who am I to say no. The response was massive, with people queuing for over an hour for some burrito noms. We arrived relatively early, so only needed to queue for 20 mins, yay.
Back a second time on Monday for lunch, I had to part with some euro so my critical Yelp hat was required, heh.
I opted for the smaller 10" burrito with the beef filling. I stuck with the white rice, as the black rice was extra and I had already decided on guac, also extra. I passed on the lettuce, as it didn't do anything for the burrito first time round, possibly took away from it. No fault of Zambrero as I have found this to be the case in other burrito bars too. Also thrown in was some sour cream, cheese, jalapenos, chopped tomato, sweet corn and their hottest salsa.
The beef was grand, but the guac didn't really add anything, so may skip this extra next time. The jalapenos saved it for me, as they added a kick to it all. The hottest salsa had a bit of a kick also, but was way too sweet - at least I assume it was this that was so sweet in the burrito.
I agree with Emily, the tables do need some sauce bottles on them to add some extra flavour. Not sure why they've not done this yet. All the other burrito bars do.
Some one else in our group had the quesadillas, which looked tasty. I will definitely try those next time I am back.
And I will be back, my job is right next door. And after a few weeks of business, they'll probably gain a star or two.
