Anyone who is familiar with the Chipotle chain from the US will recognize this immediately -- same styles of burritos, same meat choices, same salsas. Even the font on the menu looks the same. Now, given that Chipotle isn't available in Dublin and good Mexican food is tough to come by (save Cafe Azteca), that's not at all a bad thing. This place is open late (11pm weekdays; midnight Fri-Sat), reasonably priced, and oh-so delicious! Order at the counter: pick the style, meat, and extras you want. It will be prepared right in front of you and then off you go with a little bundle of deliciousness. I had brown rice, black beans, and barbacoa and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The service is great and friendly as well...really nice feel here. They had a 2-for-1 promotion running and allowed me to partake even though I hadn't printed out the voucher (environmentalism for the win!). To top it off, they have Cholula hot sauce available (where oh where can you find this in Dublin?). As far as I remember, Tolteca have been here for quite some time and I've passed it a zillion times but never actually went in. So, I decided to give it a shot on Friday as I wanted something a little different. I'm allergic to hot sauce so I went for a medium heat veggie burrito and it was good! Quite big portion. The staff aren't the smiley, happy people I would expect working at a restaurant like this but I'm gonna say that they were maybe having a bad day? Maybe it was the weather? Who knows. There's not much customer seating available so I had to take mine to go. Probably best, though, it's a messy aul thing to chow down on and sitting beside some randoms while I try to graciously gobble this down wouldn't have been my idea of fun! When I finally got around to eating it, I was very happy with it. It was huge, very tasty and filling. If the staff were a little more friendly and there was more seating, this experience could have gotten a 5*! read more

Tonight we stayed in and used their delivery service. We ordered a vegetable burrito, beef tacos, carnitas tacos, chips and guacamole. The highlights include: Took an hour and fifteen minutes. Food was cold, not slightly warm, actually cold. The burrito was really soggy, impossible to hold. Added onions to the tacos with the order, weren't in the tacos but in a tiny a plastic container with some cold, slimy onions and peppers. The tacos, also soggy, were really bland and although one set was pork with the corn salsa and the other beef with the hottest salsa, they actually tasted identical and not exciting in any way. They forgot to deliver the chips and guacamole. When I rang there was no apology, we were offered a refund but we preferred to get it sent out. This took another hour and fifteen minutes. I can understand it being Saturday night but when speaking to them on the phone I was given the impression that they could care less that they made an error and their food was well below an acceptable standard. It seems like they tried to copy Chipotle and got it all totally wrong, evident by the mediocre food and incompetent staff. I will never eat their food again. read more

Being a keen burrito fan - Tolteca is able to fulfill my MBCs (Monday Burrito Crave) with the simplest of ease, and how can they not! Getting a burrito the size of mini rugby ball and weighing in at a generous 1lbs - I wasn't able to move afterwards. The ingredients are always fresh and cooked to succulent perfection. The variety is simply outstanding and it's this what separates Tolteca from it's competitors. Sure you can have a chicken burrito or a nice steak one but if you're one of those people who is extremely difficult to please; why not make it a half and half? And why stop there... If you're not in the mood for a burrito (check yourself out as soon as possible) then Tolteca can fix you up with a nice burrito in a bowl, you know for those who don't like the extra carbs ;) and because the menu is so varied you can get oh so much more. I can sit here and type all day but I'd rather not give everything away so if you are in the vicinity and would like a Mexican experience like no other (in ireland) then definitely check this place out, with their prices being fare and not too steep on the pocket you'd be mad not too and I'm sure even the most non-avid burrito fellow being could be converted to this amazing lunch endeavour that puts a smile on my face every time I have it. read more

This is very similar to Chipotle in the states! Like Chipotle, it's easy to order a vegetarian or vegan burrito or burrito bowl here. I got a vegan burrito bowl and enjoyed it! The ingredients tasted pretty fresh and the guac was my favorite, as per usual. You guys still have a long way to go. Sure, since the last time i was there the quality has slightly improved, but I had to forgo some of my most favorite things: sour cream and spicy salsa. What is wrong with you? I can't even fathom how sour cream could have been sweet. It says "sour" right in the name, how could you get that wrong? Absolutely officially one of my new favorite places in Dublin. This place reminds me of an American chain, Chipotle. From the set up, to the interior, even the font and color of the menu boards is identical! For quick Mexican, this is as good as you can get! Whether you fancy a burrito, tacos, a burrito bowl, you can get it all. The best combo yet is steak burrito, black beans, white rice, chunky tomato salsa, corn salsa, lettuce, guacamole with a tiny bit of cheese. A tasty, (slightly) healthier burrito option for those who aren't close enough to a Boojum. I usually get the bowl with wholegrain rice and chicken. The staff seem to instinctively put less cheese and sauce on when you choose this option to make it a 'healthier' option, which is appreciated. While it is more expensive than it's competitors, the food is still great. I'd recommend checking this place out for lunch or even a quick dinner if the option is available. read more

Rubbish to be honest. I only had a burrito but it lacked pretty much any of the character I expect from a good burrito. And to top it all off, it's very expensive, far more so than the competition. Not a patch on: Burritos and blues, boojum, Pablo picanté My advice is to eat almost anywhere else. A sandwich from Tesco next door is preferable. Been here around 10 times (which says something) but there are unquestionably better burrito spots in Dublin. The meat (usually I get carnitas) is sometimes quite watery and often ingredients could be fresher but if you are looking for something to fill you up for a good price then here is a good spot. Service is efficient and I love the free refills. The place kind of reminds me of Chipotle in London/America. You can't say no to a burrito and an unlimited refills drink for a fiver!! I was looking forward to another addition to Dublin Burrito Revolution, but Tolteca doesn't quite cut it. A damn expensive steak burrito (€9 makes it the most expensive take-out burrito in Dublin, I think) but you do get a massive lump of a thing for your money. Very filling. However, I ordered the second least spicy (I like to be able to taste the ingredients, and not have them masked by burning chillis) and there was no kick at all. Rival burrito joints have at least a jolt. Ingredients were fresh but overall the flavour just wasn't there. Also, in both of our burritos had lots of rock-hard rice. Not sure if it was uncooked or over-fried but either way it would crack a tooth, so not too happy about that. I would give 2 stars but am adding an extra due to what I'm chalking up to teething issues. But honeslty I'd go elsewhere unless I'm in Dublin 4 and desperate for a burrito. read more

Delightfully different....?? Was here not too long ago for the first time. First impressions were quite good. Nice place, well looked after, clean, plenty of seating even the staff were chirpy and friendly. But that's really not the reason I go to a Mexican Burrito place. I was impressed first of all by the options available to me, and the fact that you can pretty much make your own burrito from scratch. Nice touch. They seem to put on one big spoon of everything, seems decent until you bite into it, and find that there's a lot more rice than chicken. Which is a pity really seeing as the chicken is reached good! Nice grilled taste to it. You do get a filling burrito however, something that will keep you going for hours but it just seems to me that it's missing that fiery Mexican zing! I find their beans a bit watery and rice a bit undone (but that's just me) others seem to enjoy it and the place is relatively busy during lunch time. THIS IS NOT CHIPOTLE PEOPLE. A lot of people have asked me if I've gotten homesick at all living in Dublin for 3 months now. I can call up my friends and family, but my relationship with Mexican food is definitely suffering. I've yet to find a good burrito bar in Dublin, but I'll keep you posted. And burrito bars are really the extent of Mexican food here.... it's heartbreaking, really. In all fairness, Tolteca is VERY similar to Chipotle. What a tease. I wondered whether it would be difficult to avoid gluten in Ireland and so far so good thanks to Chipotle clone Tolteca (among others). I ate the Carnitas burrito bowl while my wife had the same with barbacoa. I found the carnitas to have plenty of flavor, if not quite salty enough, and the rest of the ingredients were fresh, particularly the guacamole. My wife said the same about the barbacoa. I frequent Chipotle in the U.S. and it seems to be pretty consistent with what I'm used to. Given that I kind of expect food prices in Dublin to be a little higher than most of the U.S., I think it's a good deal and certainly enough food. If one is expecting to find the same Mexican food one is eating in Chicago, Texas, California, Arizona, (not to mention Mexico) etc. then this won't be it. But that's not really the business plan. I'm looking for tasty, affordable, healthier food that's gluten-free. This is it, and I'll be back. read more

Had the steak burrito with the works, everything was great, although the rice was a little hard. I tried a bit of a chicken burrito, and it was just as good. The place is a bit small, so it can get crowded, but there are parks nearby so you have options. Definitely try the hot sauce! This place is conveniently near my work, so I'll be stopping by often enough :) read more

I LOVE this place for burritos. Mainly because, I'm an American expat living in Dublin, and this place is essentially a copy cat of Chipotle from the states. It is so good, I eat here AT LEAST once a week. All of their food is fresh, and they actually care about the ingredients they put into their food. Whenever my husband and I go there, he always goes into a food coma after eating the burrito because the portion is so large. I usually get the a fajita burrito bowl with chicken, and it is amazing! They recently opened a location on Suffolk street (which I have also been to). Both are amazing! If you like burritos, go here!! Good little lunch spot if you looking a spicey alternative for your mid day meal. Like most places on baggot street it's does get fairly busy around the 1-2 time frame, if you can get there earlier I would recommend. It's a narrow space with just 2 benches for people and 2 tables outside, on all the tables at bottles of hot sause which I highly recommend that you drowned your burrito in. The burritos are great ! I normally go fir the steak with the mild salsa, but you can get half and half of meats either, you can also get a bag of tortilla chips for a extra euro with your meal and they do student meals too! read more

While travelling between work and an office on Baggot Street I came across Toleca. The layout and modern design of the building itself really stands out and is pretty cool. I stopped in and found they even had some lunch specials, so of course I stayed to sample the food. I had a couple things actually, because they all looked so good! I was well impressed - the tacos with shredded beef and chipotle salsa were spot on and the pork burrito with green chili salsa was equally as amazing. read more

Tolteca is a good place for a burrito. They have a 7.90 deal for burrito/tacos/salad/fajita + soft drink or water. For a couple of euros you can add tortilla chips and guacamole. Differently from Pablo Picante, Tolteca asks you to choose the ingredients yourself. There's a good selection, and all meats are tasty enough. I find Tolteca to be less tasty than Pablo Picante, but it's easier to appreciate single ingredients, and meats stand out in particular. I recommend giving it a try. I've been going here since this place opened about 18 months ago and thought it was a bit pricey but the food is usually tasty and portions were always good.. however in the past few weeks (I usually get 1-2 meals here a week) portion sizes have been severely reduced with burritos effectively turning into diet burritos overnight ( its not a burrito if u can comfortably fit the burrito diameter in a normal sized mouth!). I realise this may be a cost cutting venture with a new place opening in the city centre or to do with the arrival of compulsory calorie counting menus which are here from jan 2013 but as far as I can see it is company suicide for a place with such a loyal customer base who've gotten accustomed to a certain size of portion to go and shrink portion sizes the way they have.. This isn't just a gripe over getting one burrito a bit smaller than usual; this is some statistically significant numbers with me having personally gotten 3 in the past 2 weeks as well as a number friends/colleagues (who I incidentally turned on to the place) complaining about being still hungry after eating one which for anyone who was there pre-december 2012 would never have been heard uttered. In any case, just thought I should vent my frustration somewhere on the web rather than contact management as I don't really see it as my place to complain. Brown rice, black beans, chicken, little bit of corn salsa and a LOT of lightning salsa (full ladle please) - I say this order once a week and once a week I experience joy like no other. Why is Tolteca the best burrito place in town? Three main reasons 1 The rice - the brown rice is cooked to perfection - it has texture and bite, you aren't just eating a wad of gloopy overcooked white rice. And they must infuse it with lime because it is incredibly flavourful 2. The Chicken - I only eat free range chicken, pork is too fatty for me and I don't care for red meat - so in every other burrito place in town I only have vegetarian options. The chicken also has a great char-broiled flavour and is always tender and succulent but not greasy. 3 LIGHTNING SALSA - Dublin is a lonely place for a spice lover - not in Tolteca though. The lightning salsa isn't only wonderfully hot it is also incredibly flavourful - it is smokey, rich and hot - and they never say no to my requests for more. Because I enjoy this combination so much I haven't ever tried it any other way, although my husband routinely goes for the steak and raves about it too. Their guac and chips are also great. My only complaint? The salt levels could probably come down by 50% and there would be no adverse impact on the flavours. If my waistline and wallet could handle it I would eat here multiple times a week, but as it is, what a fantastic weekly treat. read more

I do enjoy a good burrito! Tolteca is quite handy for me for a treat at lunch as its only 5 mins from the office. I usually opt for a burrito or a burrito bowl (in an attempt to be healthier). This is your standard Mexican place and if you're not on the lookout for anything special, it's fine. A couple of things wouldn't cause me to go back too soon. One being that the sauces on the burritos all seem to be the same level of spice, and none of them are at all hot. The again I have always gotten the burrito so other options might be different. So. I agree with the other reviewer this is identical to Chipotle in the states- except the prices are higher- typical! We tried the burritos last week as we had a coupon for buy one get one. I had the chicken burrito and did not have beans in it. It was simply yummy. Burritos are big and I thought I would eat half and save half for lunch the next day.. hmm I ate almost all of it in one sitting. The taste was fresh without too much extra flavor going on. My boyfriend had the carnitas fajita burrito and he enjoyed just as well. I have to say this is my favorite burrito in town as it reminds me of a burrito I would have back in America. Im from Los Angeles and am VERY familiar with chipotle! This is absolutely nothing like it, you might be deceived by the decor, but the food is HORRIBLE! Ugh! I don't think I have ever NOT finished a burrito, but I took 2 bites and threw this away! It was sweet, Mexican burritos should not be sweet! The only redeeming factor was the guacamole.
