While I thought Pablo Picante was as good as it gets for burritos in Dublin, Tolteca has set a very high bar, one that I am sure no other mexican place can beat. The closest comparison which I can make for Tolteca is Chipotle in the US. Fresh ingredients and options made right in front of you. Beef, Pork, Chicken or Steak, Pinto or Black Beans, Three kinds of Salsa, Other great stuff. The burrito bowls are awesome and the chips and guac is unbeatable. The staff are also very friendly and helpful and they have a great lunch special too. It seems like they always have a good special going on, although all are advertised solely through Facebook (check-in and get free chips and salsa), right now there is even 4 EUR burrito bowls this week. I would eat at tolteca every 2-3 days or as much as I can and everytime I am in town. every single time I would order a carnitas (succulent pork) burrito with rice, guacemole, mixed salad, lettuce, cheese, salsa hot sauce and sour cream! defiantly worth a try! Maybe it was just the day or me not choosing sour creme with my burrito - but I'm afraid I was close to just giving two stars. It was very busy when I arrived and preparing the burrito took some time. Which is fair enough but I didn't like that the hot ingredients where on the tortilla for quite some time so were cooling down. So I ended with a cold dry burrito. Obviously the choice of ingredients is up to me and my mistake if I'm not happy. But other than that it was a nice enough experience. I just had better. Its good if u are HUNGARY and in a RUSH, you can get food in about 5 minutes. Burrito or salad box - which is huge, or tacos, lots of tacos, yumm :) Don't be shy to ask for MORE vegetables, different sauce or to ask for 2 different types of meat! So a few months ago I posted a review for Tolteca on Baggot Street and my review for Suffolk Street has to be nearly identical (although I am writing a new one) I love Tolteca. The concept is identical to Chipotle in the States, which is probably why I love this place so much. Not only do they use fresh ingredients, they also source as much as they can locally. All meat is source locally and on their menu it gives you from what farm and location each meat comes from. Due to the fact that it's an eat fresh concept, the veggies, beans, meat, sauces are being replenished frequently which means you really are eating fresh. Burritos, burrito bowls, salad, chips and guac, you can customise your meal to the exact way you like it. Do you like it hot? Spicy? Mild? No salsa at all? You get to decide that as well. I am definitely writing this review with a heavy heart. What I thought was my favorite burrito bar in Dublin, really let me down today.The whole idea of this kind of place is that the ingredients are fresh and its prepared in front of you. Today I went in to the Nassau street location and ordered two burritos. The rice I wanted on both was almost gone. Instead of the worker getting a fresh pan of rice (which he had to do anyway as there wasn't enough bottom of the barrel rice for both burritos) he scraped the bottom right in front of me! I had chicken in one of the burritos and carnitas in the other one. The girl that put them in the bag tried to write with a ball point pen on the tin foil so that I could know which was which. I know she was trying to do something nice, but a ball point pen on tin foil? I'm sure you can guess what happened when she did that. Yep, pen ripped the tin foil and went straight through onto the burrito. All I have to say is, "Come on guys! You can do better than that!" Tolteca is the place to go for some good Mexican food! This restaurant served local meats that came from grass fed animals. It was delicious! I ordered a burrito with barbacoa meat. The meat was super tender and flavorful. The burrito came with a salsa topping, veggies, rice, beans, cheese and guacamole. The service here was fast and friendly. Prices were affordable. As a bonus, it is located in a popular area and has a restroom downstairs to freshen up before heading out to roam the best of Dublin. read more

I don't write reviews usually, but this food is so bad if I could save one person from spending way too much money on horrible food, I thought I should. I work in the city and walked past them enough times I thought I would give them a try. The food was really bad. I got a burrito bowl, all the ingredients were stone cold. Fresh lovely limey guacamole, delish beans and veg and great salsa, I think these guys may even have the edge for me over Boojum with their brown rice option. The only negative I have that that I frequently have had to ask them to add more veg to my *vegetarian* burrito bowl (cost cutting perhaps?) a few strands of peppers and onions just doesn't cut it if you're not getting any meat. Hmmm. A little let down if I am honest. I reckon I was expecting too much from all the great things I had heard about Tolteca and the tastings we had of their salsas and guacamole at the Yelp Backyard Bizarre. That said, the offers here are fairly incredible. We got two for one on the mains, we both went for a burrito. There was also two for one on bottles of Corona. That's pretty awesome too. And refills on soft drinks appear to be free. The burrito was OK. I went for the same as my partner, shredded beef. The number three salsa had a little kick, but not enough. So next time I'll try their hottest salsa and see if that hits the mark. The biggest let down for me was the messy tables were left un-cleared the whole time we were there. There didn't seem to be anyone working the floor. You cannot depend on customers to clear their table after themselve. Even if they do, there is bound to be some rice and other food left behind. I had to clear the table we used before we ate. Other than that, the decor is cool. Airy and bright. I will be back. Fingers crossed for next time ;) read more

In my neverending quest to find the perfect burrito I frequented this establishment on Suffolk Street one sunny afternoon. It has the usual gimmicks you'd expect to find in one of the many burrito joints in this city; open floor plan, authentic ingredients in cabinets, postmodern decor and lots of students on both sides of the counter. Forgive me if I sound a little jaded here but that's because I am. There's an awful lot of style over substance in city eateries. Especially when most of these places aren't as unique as they think they are. I've been searching in vain for a simple honest to goodness Mexican place without ironic knick-knacks on the walls and a pretentious menu. Maybe I'm just getting old before my time... Not sure I'm into the whole "copying" of another restaurant concept...even down to the food. Someone actually went to Chipotle in the states and took pictures of the store, took all the marketing direction and then ordered everything on the menu just so they could copy it. Even the font!!!! We aren't ok when fashion brands like Louis Vuitton or Gucci are copied, so why is this ok? Food was just ok... so at least I can say, they didn't capture the true taste of Chipotle. Tolteca's burritos are expensive compared to similar burrito places in Dublin. Not by much, mind, it's €7 here compared to €6 elsewhere. They're pretty solid, it has to be said. Good quality and about the right size. The constituent parts combine well, all very good. I'd imagine it would be a bit too dry without gaucamole, though. They charge €1 extra for guac, if you can afford this, get it. Their guac is one of the better quality ones I've tasted in Dublin, and it adds enough wateriness to the burrito to make it perfect! Been here around 10 times (which says something) but there are unquestionably better burrito spots in Dublin. The meat (usually I get carnitas) is sometimes quite watery and often ingredients could be fresher but if you are looking for something to fill you up for a good price then here is a good spot. Service is efficient and I love the free refills. The place kind of reminds me of Chipotle in London/America. You can't say no to a burrito and an unlimited refills drink for a fiver!! I was hungry and my bus not turning up making my trip home an hour longer made me weak... I changed buses outside Tolteca and the possibility of a burrito made me question my resolve to eat at home! My burrito history is mostly a love affair with Boojum, would Tolteca sway my fidelity? After this brief fling, the short answer is No! It was pretty late so maybe being the end of the day affected the quality of the contents, but things just were quite as good as I'd come to expect. As a student in Trinity college right next door to the Suffolk st Tolteca, I have to say nothing beats coming out of a long morning of class and heading straight over for one of their amazing burritos. 9 times out of 10 I get the chicken burrito with brown rice, peppers, pinto beans, corn salsa and sour cream and cheese. Tolteca gets 3.5 stars from me. It's a great spot to get a quick bite to eat and they offer the healtheir option of a 'burrito in a bowl' which is right up my alley. The pricetag is a wee bit high for the amount of eats you get but it tastes pretty good (I got the chicken with all the fixin's...) What made my experience a bit less 'palatable' - so to speak - was my visit to the restrooms. I backed out and headed to Brown Thomas instead. The dining room could use a bit more frequent clean-up of table tops as well. (These two points are very fixable and should be at the top of the priority list for any type of eating establishment.) Not a bad burrito place. They offer a good student deal for 6.50 which is all the food and drink it worth in my opinion. Free refills ftw. The actual food is fairly tasteless and the burritos just taste like a big bland mash. The rice is usually dry. No chipotle sauce usually. However they offer big portions! The bathrooms are pretty shit to be fair. But the eating area is nice and big. The staff don't bother you when your eating and its a very good place to chill after your food for a while. The restaurant - Nice combination of small and large tables, I like the bench seats on the larger tables, great for squeezing in large groups. Almost universal in the states, but rare over here, is the serve yourself soda fountain, so you can get your own refills. Typical burrito bar menu, lots of ways to mix and match. They were temporarily out of brown rice, and the only other choice was white. That seems to be the hardest part for the so-called Mexican food places here, getting proper Mexican style rice. The burrito - I ordered pork, rice, pinto beans, cheese, lettuce, sour cream and paid extra for guacamole. "They're two for one though." - Okay, I'll have two then. "Anything else?" - Yeah, some guacamole and a Corona please. "Great, that will be 11,55 please" - Can I have a stamp in my Yelp Passport too please? "Oh, you are with Yelp? - I am. We're sitting at that table in the middle there. "Well, in that case, everything is free today. Enjoy your meal!" And that was my first experience of eating at Tolteca. After finishing my food and my first beer, I went back to the counter and asked, more as a joke than anything else, if Corona was two for one as well. To my surprise, it was, so I went back to our table with an additional 2 cold Coronas. Experiment succesful! Oh.. I guess I have to say something about the food too now, right? Well, the food was very good. The burrito was big enough to serve as a meal, the ingredients complimented well and the meat was juicy and tender. Basically, it was everything you look for in a burrito.I'm not even going to throw in my pet peeve of the salsa not being spicy enough because it appears there is only one place in Dublin that can effectively set my taste buds on fire so far. As far as value for money goes, this was a champ. 2 meal size burritos, a pot of guacamole and 3 Coronas for a grand total of 4 euros. It doesn't get better than that. I wasn't a fan of the first Tolteca to open up in Ballsbridge. I thought it was over priced and not particularly good and I haven't been back since. This one on Suffolk street however is a very different story. The place is large and more than that, it's a very pleasant place to sit down and have a burrito. They have a free refill on fountain drinks setup, something that's still very rare in Ireland. Even better, they have bottles of Cholula hot sauce, the best Mexican hot sauce there is. It's not particularly hot as such, just lovely. The burrito I had was excellent and the only thing I would say against it is that the hottest sauce on the menu is just a medium to me. That said, it makes it a much friendlier experience the next day if you know what I mean. It's an excellent location, right by O'Neil's. It's not quite the best burrito place in Dublin but it's in my current top 5 for the burrito itself and certainly might be in the top 3 for the restaurant experience. read more

I had the steak of course, in both, varying the condiments slightly, just to keep things interesting, ladies..;) As I plowed through the first one I began to understand my peers assertions of Tolteca. Having grown fond of my local Mama's Revenge, I never felt the need to go further afield, as is the banality of conservatism. However, I'm extremely glad I took the journey. This was what I had thought a burrito was suppose to be. An almost intimidating onslaught of variety in condiments nearly left us flustered and sweating at the till while the regulars built up a cue behind us, sniggering at our amateur, tourist like bewilderment but we persisted and were rewarded with flavor. Tolteca is another pretty good stop in Burritoville. It's a bit of a 'does what it says on the tin' type place. Nice and spaciously decorated, with big square tables that you can either share with friends or (hopefully!) friendly strangers. It seems to be based a bit of the Chipotle chain in the States, though nothing wrong with that. I really like the fact that the meat is all sourced from local Irish farmers - big plus for me. Excellent guac and chips. No beer, boo. Pro Tip: Check in with your Yelp app here and you get 2 for 1 burritos. Nice! I've eaten here lots of times and do like the food but I had a very bad experience here a few weeks ago and this wasn't the first time and I worked with people who have also had a bad experience. MY biggest complaint here is that I emailed Tolteca to let them know the issue, to which I received no reply. A few days later I made contact through Facebook to which I received a reply. I then explained the issue and have not received any reply even though there has been lots of activity on the Facebook page since. I just feel like then have ignored the issue, I had not looked for any compensation or anything, just acknowledgement would have been sufficient. Below is part of the Facebook message I sent. "I had sent an email through the website, I had filled out a comment form on the contact page. Basically I had said that I had eaten in the Suffolk street branch on a Friday afternoon. I hadn't eaten anything else that day either before or after and I had bad d******a all of that Friday night which was an inconvenience as I had an important event which I had to attend. I had mentioned that this wasn't a one off occasion as I used to work in Xtravision across from the Baggot street and myself and other members of staff have been ill after eating there. On one occasion I got chicken which was pink and I went back to be told that some people like their chicken pink the same as steak! I tried to explain and I hope the guy listened so that it wouldn't happen again" I'm disappointed as I do love the food, the portions are too small but it's tasty which kinda makes up for it read more

Tolteca has a nice space, it's a wide room, open, very inviting for small-medium groups due to its big tables and benches. But maybe because of this it can also get a bit noisy - not too much, just enough that you notice it. Everything was nice enough but I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have some of the ingredients available. For instance, the brown rice tray was empty and I even tried asking if there would be more. Sadly, that was no. They (almost) made up for it by having some delicious red and green peppers, something I don't remind seeing anywhere else. The meat was somewhat dry, unfortunately. I was left under the impression the ingredients were not being cooked as often as they maybe should and were also left there for a long time, getting less fresh. That being said, the burrito was a good size and was well wrapped. My scores were very close to the four stars (Restaurant - 3,8 and Burrito -3,5), but Burrito's Blow Out stop #4 is going to end up with 3 stars because it's a very decent place serving very decent burritos, but nothing in particular stood out for me. Sometimes they have super cool offers, like buy one get another one free - I'm actually waiting for this offer to come back ;) I think they have a great variety of burritos flavors, beans, rice, but I do not think they are very tasty. Well I can see why this place is popular with the students nearby, the two for one offer is as tempting as they come. It was full of them on a Tuesday evening, hungry for their dinner. I went to the end of the queue, where each member of staff tended to a different stage of burrito making. I chose the black beans, chicken and the brown rice - I regretted not choosing a spicier sauce. The fella at the till was very smiley and friendly. The burrito itself was a lovely juicy texture and the meat was lovely and tender. There wasn't really enough flavour to it though, and at one point all I was eating was rice for several bites. A 2* rating is harsh but necessary. Yes there is burritos yes there is ample seating areas and yes their is a student deal. (Student deals :P) But alas the quality of ingredient is less than up to the expected standard of a joint with such a distinct reputation. Think burrito place think tolteca but think burrito (spot the difference) think somewhere more Mexican somewhere more friendly and with a less conveyor belt impression. The tables are excellent and I've yet to cross a burrito bar with such a tolerance for young adults having the craic but for burritos. I think not. You don't have to walk very far to find a burrito place in Dublin. There are shops dotted all over the city and the one I frequent is Tolteca for no other reason than it's closest to me. The burritos are fairly tasty but I have a few issues with the place. 1: The burritos are slapped together, literally. There's little to no effort put in to mixing the ingredients so I often find myself eating whole mouthfuls of guacamole/cheese with little else. 2: The staff don't wipe down the serving area nearly enough and so my veggie burrito frequently rubs off chunks of meat. 3: The staff member who wraps the burrito and whose hands come in contact with everything on the menu doesn't change their gloves when wrapping a veggie burrito. From a cross-contamination prevention and mixing of ingredients perspective Tolteca would do well to follow rival Boojum's lead. You don't have to walk very far to find a burrito place in Dublin but you do have to walk a little bit further for a good one. read more

Normally I love my burritos from there but the one massive problem with Tolteca is the fact that they don't have lids for the cups. Last week I was getting a student meal to go and obviously I was hoping to avail of the drink that comes with it, when I asked the staff if they have lids they just got confused and said no so I asked I could get a bottle from the fridge and he said yes but I'd have to pay for it, in addition to the meal price. I was never more annoyed, I had to pay nearly €2 extra all because Tolteca don't supply lids! Pretty accurate to American Chipotle. A great burrito in the middle of our Ireland trip!

If you're from the U.S., this is basically a Chipotle, with the seasoning adjusted for local palate - slightly sweeter and less spicy. I'm not a huge fan of this at home in New Mexico because - duh, I can get better Mexican food - but I was super hungry and equally homesick, so this was amazing.
