I went to both Zabar's cafe and the actual market after hearing about it from family who live on the UWS. I ordered the Signature Nova on an everything bagel. It was some of the best nova lox I've ever had. The bagel wasn't the best because it was a bit hard, but the lox more than made up for it. I also ordered a regular coffee, and then went into the store to buy a bag of beans. The experience of getting coffee beans was cool -- they have someone who will weigh and bag the beans for you based on how much you want, and there are a variety of options to choose from. The market had a ton of freshly prepared foods, so this is a great spot for both groceries and for picnic supplies! read more

So....to begin with, I have been a customer for decades, which suggests I really like Zabars. And that is true, I like the food, the service and the people, some of whom I sent birth announcements to...a long time ago. Why ? because Zabars was the equivalent of my small town grocery store, I shopped regularly and knew many people by name. But why am I reviewing Zabars now ? Because this year, we didn't want to cook a turkey for Thanksgiving. That posed a problem because I really love turkey and rarely get to eat it. So Thanksgiving morning I went to Zabars and bought several small packages of cooked turkey. I expected it to be good, but it was not just good, it was fantastic.....so delicious and not too salty (as prepared food often is for me). We tasted it as we deboned the pieces, exclaiming "oh, this is so delicious, so delicious." I am happily eating it for the second night in a row. Ah Zabars ! You do not disappoint ! Came here for the cafe! We waited in the fast moving line to order a bacon, egg and cheese on a roll and a sesame bagel with cream cheese. Really cannot argue with the simplicity of a well done bagel with creamy delicious cream cheese. The sandwich on a roll was also delightfully filling. This review is purely related to online ordering and delivery. I was out of the country for the holidays and thought of ordering a little bundle for my elderly parents. When placing order on Thursday, I chose Monday to what I thought to be a delivery date. The delivery cost is $20+, the carrier was not clearly mentioned and by analogy to ordering flowers I thought Monday will be a delivery date. I received confirmation email with no information on tracking. I started getting nervous on early Monday and called Zabar's ordering service. I was told that what I thought was a delivery date is actually a shipping date and it will take 2-3 days to get an order (like it would walk itself from Manhattan to Brooklyn). I was not offered any further help other than someone schooling me as a child and ended up hanging up. In a few hours I got a notice of shipment (it was almost noon of Monday) and discovered it was a UPS carrier we try to avoid due to extreme difficulties like having packages "lost" or "delivered" with no trace of it in site. Right now it is a Wednesday night and the package is still not delivered citing no answer at the door (my parents are elderly and during last two days had not left the apartment). I understand the order was not for a $1K+ or not for Central Park area, however, I found both order interface and phone assistance to be unhelpful beyond acceptable. I do not believe I'll order again. I think I have such a bad aftertaste that I won't be visiting or recommending on line order to anyone else. Ahhh, Zabar's. A truly iconic NY store. Me love you long time! It's ALWAYS crowded. And can be confusing. I had to ask someone where to find the spices. They're not near the baking or cooking aisles. They're by the elevator, on two racks against the walls, closer to the rather small produce section. But you don't usually go to Zabar's for produce. There are two stands on the street nearby, and Fairway is a couple of blocks away. No, you go to Zabar's for FOOD. Glorious cheeses. The best smoked salmon/lox/nova. Tuna salad. Chicken salad. Fishy salad. Green salads. Grain salads. Bakery goodies. A butcher shop. Ready-made sandwiches, salads, and entrees. Shelves of gluten-free pasta (also difficult to find. Behind the coffee roasters.) There is a private-label coffee selection that is the stuff of dreams for coffee fiends. They sell some already bagged (whole beans), or you can order coffee bagged in the amount that you want from huge barrels. Many of the limited flavors were sold out, but I snagged a pound of Cappuccino Fudge (TDF!!!) and it was ground by a cheerful, smiling man. I grind my own beans at home, but my mother gave the coffee grinder that I gave her to my brother. Pffft. There are housewares on the second floor, and checkout is swift and efficient. I LOVE their bags. They're sturdy and come in two sizes. This last visit was solely for coffee, but I usually buy a sandwich for lunch on the plane the day that I leave. I didn't have to this time, because after Southwest canceled my flight, I ended up flying first class on United. I wish that there was a Zabar's here, but perhaps it's a uniquely New York thing and wouldn't do as well in Colorado. I'll look forward to returning on my next trip :) read more

Now, I was deeply impressed by the selection of foods not otherwise easily found at your average grocery, deli or specialized supermarket. The selection of oils and vinegars, smoked fish, coffee, jams and cheeses was quite impressive. However, I am not easily impressed by dirty floors, rude customer service, and even less impressed by the water dripping from the ceiling. Each of these elements individually could be attributed to bad weather, bad timing or bad luck but together they were to me a signal of "we don't care, we have got plenty of customers anyway" kind of attitude. Not sure I'd come back for more of the same. I love Zabar's so much it isn't funny. Yeah, it's like difficult to navigate and some things are wayyyy overpriced, but the prepared foods just simply cannot be beat. They're like restaurant quality, delicious foods at a fraction of the price. Their sandwiches rival Katz's for quality and are $14! It's unheard of. I also love their beet salads, their amazing pickles, and the variety of spreads, especially the whitefish and salmon. Their babka got amazing reviews from a friend that I brought it to for a party. The employees are always super nice and happy to answer questions. Their bagels are unusually good, probably the best in the area. The cafe has limited hours but is really good and is so dirt cheap. But better Nova? It does not exist. Your Fruit and dessert platter was great. And the surprise hit was your egg salad! Who knew it was so scrumptious? Include it for your diabetic guests who should not even eat bagels. I keep Mission Zero Carb tortillas on hand for even my pre-diabetic guests. Gift cert finally arrived on 1/6/26 in a torn and open package, and detailed tracking info shows it shipped with an invalid address. Called Zabar's, who pulled the paper file (!!) to confirm that address mis-entered by their staff, causing gift to bounce around UPS for three+ weeks. Zabar's said I should feel "lucky not to have experienced delivery problems in the past, because they happen all the time!" Manager I spoke to next shared this "yeah, we caused a problem, but so what?" philosophy. First saw this place on Somebody Feed Phil and had to checkout this place for a good deli sandwich. A great Jewish delicatessen and a lot of heart goes into the food. Kind service and hospitality. Just know what you want ahead of time, it's fast paced! The sandwich I got was the number 1 (pastrami, cow tongue, corn beef with provolone and Russian sauce) and are these portions so generous for $16! I highly recommend buying something from here. Zabar's was my favorite food shop in New York. Unfortunately, with the passing of the great Saul Zabar in October 2025, things are beginning to go downhill as prices go up. I was surprised when I noticed that a product I've been buying regularly went from about $7.50 to $13.50 in a matter of a week. (There are other examples like that as well.) I asked at the manager's desk if it was due to tariffs and was told no, that it was due to Mr. Zabar's daughter, who is going around and raising all the prices. It's an institution. Good bagels, good + nova. You can get it cut at the counter, however you can get the same nova for $10 less / pound prepackaged right across the fish counter. It's cool to watch them hand cut it. I haven't tried the prepackaged stuff, so I don't know if there's a difference. I but my bagel ingredients at the grocery section and make my bagels myself. However you can get cut bagels at the Zabars cafe next door. read more

I got the classic Zabar's nova and it was $14.50. You can choose the type of bagel you would like + cream cheese option. I also got the Vietnamese styled coffee. The coffee is basically cold brew drenched with a bunch do sweetened condensed milk. It is not good lol. It's just a spin off of Vietnamese coffee, but I would pass on it because it just tasted like sweetened cold brew. The bagel was fine, it wasn't amazing or bad it was just mediocre imo. I wouldn't say this place is so good that I would recommend anyone to go out of their way to come here for a bagel BUT if you live in this area and you're craving a lox bagel, then it's good enough to satiate a craving. read more
