I had stage 4 breast cancer in 2011 and was given 6 months to live. The good news is that I miraculously reversed the disease and am now cancer-free. The bad news is that I went $500,000 into debt from cancer treatments that were not covered by my insurance. This led to me getting behind on my mortgage payments, which resulted in being forced to sell my beloved house that I owned for 12 years, and find a place to rent with my boyfriend Jeff. Moving is considered to be one of most stressful human experiences, so as you can imagine, this particular move was extremely emotional for me.
We were living in denial about the upcoming move, which we had known about for months. In fact, about 4 days before our move-out date, we hadn't packed a single box. I decided to go on HomeAdvisor.com, where I've found many great service providers before, and typed in our request for bids from moving companies. Five different movers contacted me, and I got estimates from three of them. I already had an affinity for Z Movers, because my nickname throughout college and graduate school was "Z". It felt like kismet. Kevin and Peter came over to give us a free estimate, and Jeff and I sat and talked to them for a long time. They were both such genuinely kind and caring people, and even though this was a new company, they both clearly had wisdom and experience with moving. They listened to me talk about how emotional and vulnerable I felt about this move, and they assured us that they would take great care of our belongings and treat them as their own. I asked tons of questions, and every answer instilled more confidence. I had never hired a moving company to do the packing, so I was very concerned about that process. As a recovering clutterer and a very private person, I don't like people looking through my stuff or touching it. Understanding all of that, they looked through the house, room by room, and were not at all judgmental about any clutter or mess they encountered. The estimate they gave us was considerably less than what the other two companies quoted! And they use sturdy green plastic eco-boxes that are reusable and better for the environment than cardboard. It was an easy decision to hire them, and we had complete faith that it was the right choice. We knew they'd do a great job. They showed up a few days later and spent all day efficiently but carefully packing up the house where I had been living for the past 12 years. I was surprisingly calm and didn't burst into tears once during what could have been a deeply traumatizing event, seeing my entire life in my beloved sanctuary being put into boxes. They treated everything reverentially and covered anything fragile or valuable in bubble wrap or shrink-wrap. They also labeled each box with what was inside, and what room of the house it was from. When they were done for the day, we felt so blessed that we had hired them to do the packing. It was the smartest choice we could have made, and we were beyond grateful. It would have taken us a month to do that by ourselves! Jeff and I were in awe of how deftly they accomplished the overwhelming task of packing up everything in the entire house.
We got a good night's sleep, and the next morning they showed up smiling and ready to go. The move was a huge undertaking, but they handled it with ease and grace. We were astonished at the stamina and diligence they displayed ~ it was exhausting just watching them! The move went smoothly, nothing was damaged, and there was even laughter and camaraderie. When Kevin and Peter drove away that night, we felt like they were part of our family. Hiring Z Movers was absolutely the best decision we could have made. They made the whole process joyful and fun. We have nothing but praise and gratitude for Kevin and Peter. Thanks a gazillion ~ you guys are the BEST! read more
