The food is so good! I ordered the fish and chips and it tasted fresh and crisp like it should. I had a beer and enjoyed a nice evening dinner outside on top. the customer service is good and the atmosphere is relaxing to just talk and enjoy each other's company. The portions are well sized for what you pay for (good quality). Dog driendly, and they have outside heaters near the tables if it gets cold. I like the location and how its set up to the side of everything in the back. If you're looking to have a nice dinner out, I would recommend eating here. read more

Buyer beware ... we ordered a bottle of Frank Family Cab 'Reserve' 2014 off the menu and the server brought us a bottle of Frank Family Cab 2016 (not a reserve). She poured all our glasses without allowing us to taste the wine and it turned out to be a bad bottle (Perhaps exposed to heat or something). No one at the table could drink it. That caused is to look at the bottle. When we pointed out to the server that the bottle was not only the wrong wine, but the bottle was bad, she said, this is the only Frank Family Cab we have, we no longer carry the reserve and the menu is out of date. We pointed out that the price of a 2014 Reserve would be more than a 2016 non reserve and we got a shoulder shrug. We went ahead and selected a 2010 Syrah as a second option and she brought us a 2014 Syrah and told us they no longer had any more 2010 in stock. We asked what the price was for the 2014, and she said they would have to charge us the price listed on the menu because that is what the price in the computer would be for this label. Ummmm... I think there is a bit of an integrity issue here as the servers are passing off lesser expensive wines as more expensive versions listed and priced on the menu from the same winery. They don't carry the more expensive versions but charge the same price. This felt very fraudulent to us so we just had our dinner without wine and left. Totally blown away that they didn't seem to want to make any effort to remedy this. It seemed like a case of 'it is what it is' and 'you are the first person to mention this so what's the big deal?' I feel bad for all the clients who are either not paying attention or are ordering a glass at a time. They are not getting what they think they are getting and are likely over paying as a result. Ok. We've been to this place three times this week alone. It's that good. First impression: we came through the bottom entrance and to be honest, I thought we were in an art gallery. Turns out we were. Lol. That's what makes this place so cool. We went upstairs and found the actual restaurant. I loved the fact that our waiter was so helpful and helped me come to a decision. I settled on the tri-tip smothered in mushroom sauce, veggies and mashed potato. My SO settled for the stroganoff burger. It took a while to get our meal. I think they were just really busy. But when I got my meal, it was perfection. My husband was to busy stuffing his face and hardly spoke to me during our meal lol. So if that's any indication.... The next evening we went back. Wednesday's are 2 for 1 on their burgers and it's definitely worth it. They serve drinks and water out of mason jars and I just like that. I think it's kinda cool. We had the white chocolate raspberry cheesecake for dessert. Omg. I was In heaven. They are also really patient with kids. You'd have to be to get my business since my children are rambunctious lol. We are going back on Monday. Taking a friend to experience this with us. Also, we are moving from the area so it's a fitting goodbye. But we will be back whenever we can! read more

Z cafe is best described as a "hidden gem". You could drive on the 76 though bonsall everyday and never realize it was there. It's tucked back in the shopping center but it's worth looking for. We have found that it's a great halfway (ish) point between Oceanside/vista area and Temecula. Now onto the food.... we typically go for breakfast, they have great omelets, pancakes and a tone of options! They also have Mimosa and beer. They have a wide variety of options for lunch. Sometime I found surprising is they have several Hawaii option and they are done very well. Z cafe is great place for groups because they have a little bit of everything! read more

This is our local restaurant. The staff is super friendly, the food portions are large. There is a limited menu for Vegans...a teriyaki brown rice bowl, vegetable sushi, and I use to order their black bean burger but I suspected it was cooked on the same grill as the other burgers and, it is. So, I don't eat the black bean burger any longer. The atmosphere and decor is nice and they have a great patio with heaters. I would give it 5 stars if it had more plant based options. read more

This breaks my heart to write this review because Z cafe has one of the best chai lattes ever but, I am forever scarred after breakfast there this morning. This morning my sister and I met at 11 am and ordered our usual chai lattes and they took forever to get to us and we're luke warm. We were a little bummed they were not piping hot as usual but ignored it. We both ordered the bonsall burrito and just as I was about to finish my first half of it a cockroach appeared from the crack in the table. I repeat a COCKROACH! The little guy danced across my plate and I stood up with a napkin to catch him and he dove back into the cracks of the table. I grabbed our waitress and told her so she grabbed a napkin to try and find him. I showed her where he was hiding in the crack of the table. My sister and I could visually see him and the waitress literally told us " I do not see it, I don't know what to tell you." My sister and I both pointed at its antennas poking through the crack in the table and she still ignored that it was there and asked us " what do you want me to do, I can move you to the bar." She motioned to grab our plates and move them to the bar and I told her again the cockroach walked across my food and not to bother. My sister and I sat at the bar and finished our visit. I asked to speak with a manager and the waitress instead came back with the bill and told us the manager was too busy.... To top this buggy experience, we opened the bill and there was an ant crawling across it.... We paid our bill like honest people but we will not becoming back to Z Cafe. Went on a Sunday morning! Wait was about 15 minutes... was seated on the patio! Lots of things on the menu sounded good so the choice was hard... also the prices were very affordable! We just discovered Z cafe last week and have already been there twice. First I was impressed with the whole look of the place. Feels classy yet down to earth. Walking through the Art Gallery downstairs was also an added plus. I loved the food. So far everything I've eaten has been totally delicious. Big portions, affordable. The staff and bar tender were super friendly. We instantly felt welcomed and we're looking forward to joining the crowd for their happy hour on Tuesday $1 tacos! Oh and they're open all day unlike some places that close between lunch and dinner. The best part for me is that since living way out here in Bonsall, it's been a challenge to find a decent place to eat nearby that I actually want to hang out in. I came to Z Cafe for the first time for Sunday brunch with family. My future brother in law recommended eating here for some local eats since he is from the area. Z Cafe is located right off of Mission Road in the back of the River Village shopping center so it is a bit difficult to find. I was surprised that no one was parked in what I thought was the front of the cafe only to see a sign saying that there is parking in the back on a hill with a bridge leading to the main entrance to the cafe. That's were everyone parks! The decor was an interesting rustic meets mod with their faux taxidermy and tree branches. I was looking around the restaurant and saw randomly placed painted surfboards and looking down the stairs I saw that there were more random art pieces which didn't really go with the rustic decor. I realized that they were displaying art from local artists which was really fun! On to their menu.... They have the standard breakfast choices. Omelettes, pancakes, bacon, sausage....etc... and the standard lunch options salads, sandwiches, and burgers. What I did see on the menu that was special was that Z Cafe had Hawaiian dishes (Loco moco, portuguese sausage dishes, Hawaiian marinated meats). The fiance ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs and I ordered the french toast combo with sausage and eggs. Both were good and very standard breakfast choices. The only downside was that I found some egg shells in my eggs! Luckily I did not bite into them and when I told the server she was very apologetic. The loco moco and chicken teriyaki bowl that my brother and sister in law ordered looked delicious and they both enjoyed their meals. I think that Z Cafe is A-OK and I really would give them 3.5 stars because aside from that mishap with the egg shells the service here was great and the staff were very friendly. The restaurant was also very clean and their prices are reasonable. If I'm in the area I would love to come back and try other dishes. I love Hawaiian food and since my family is from the island I would love to try some of their Hawaiian dishes. read more

I went for dinner one night with an acquaintance and fell in love with the steak salad they had it was a 10 in every way but I went at a later date with a few friends and realized the menus are not the same. Not the biggest fan of their lunch menu and waiting on the sushi bar to open was a little disappointing plus they don't serve hard alcohol (margarita lover here) so that was kind of a bummer as well. I do still recommend them for a nice dinner, their outside rooftop dining was gorgeous just be mindful of the time that you go. read more

My friend and I popped in for lunch and were happily surprised by our experience. First, the atmosphere was very cool and immaculate. We had excellent service and the food was of exceptional quality and quantity! I ordered the Eggs Benedict with hash browns and my companion had a platter of sweet potato fries. The portions were huge, but because everything was so incredibly delicious, we had no problem joining the clean-plate club. To top it off, our tab only came to $12.00. My family and I just found this place last week and we love it! We were ignored by one of the waitresses who was rolling silverware 20' away from us so it took a few minutes for us to be greeted and then a few more to be seated. Thankfully she wasn't our waitress. Our girl was on point! We came for a very late lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and food. Not very expensive at all and the food was great. I really wanted to like this place. If you live in Fallbrook you are aware of the severe lack of decent dining choices. So we gave this place a shot. In the beginning it was cool, more knowledgeable, normal bartender, decent service. A few months later and now it's filled with 19 year old girls either frantically running around or chit chatting with one another. The last time I was here with my mother the waitress was so absent minded and that couldn't even be justified with it being busy... because it wasn't. She failed to do anything beyond merely handing us our plates. On the food side of things. We once ordered their Mahi which was served covered in some weird sauce (and I mean absolutely smothered) it was obviously old fish that they were looking to get rid of. My husband ordered a craft beer on tap and with no explanation was served a warm Shock Top in a bottle. The most redeeming quality about this place are the Sriacha and Teriyaki brussel sprouts. I'm editing my review. Seriously, what restaurant would mess up on a meal 3 times and still charge you??? I ordered the eggs Benedict. It came out cold and the spinach wasn't cooked. It was raw. So I sent it back. It came out again...cold and the English muffins weren't toasted. The third time it was finally done right but the owner didn't really apologize and they didn't comp that part of the meal. Another problem: They don't manage the hostess desk very well at all. You can put your name on the list and the next thing you know someone sits down without doing so and they don't say a thing. This has happened to us at least 4 times. The last time I ordered the avocado like salad. Dressing was bland. Chicken was dry. Salad was bitter. Staff is usually nice so it's a bummer to write this bad review. Seriously if this restaurant was anywhere else where they had competition by geography, they'd either have to make essential improvements or go out of business. I'll only go back under duress. Previous review: There isn't much in Bonsall restaurant wise, so it's nice to have Z Cafe as a place to meet friends for a meal. Food is usually good and the atmosphere is comfortable. The food is always very good here ...but I was so disappointed in the staff following covid guidelines. They were wearing " masks" but they were mostly flimsy thin bandanas - open on the bottom. One waiter had it below his nose. The only one I saw wearing a good mask properly was the bus boy. I feel like restaurants should enforce proper mask wearing...especially when they are handling food. I completely understand this is a difficult time...but if restaurants want us to support them...they need to follow the rules and make us feel safe. read more

Please note: Sunrize Cafe has become Z Cafe and has moved to the two-story building (which used to house Rio Rico) in the northern portion of the River Village shopping center. We celebrated a birthday at Z Cafe last night and have mixed reviews. The place was pretty busy but not packed; I'm told this is normal, especially for a Friday evening. The hostess was friendly and reliable throughout the night, which we know because we had to summon her several times as our waitress, Lord love her, was a hot mess. We waited ages for drinks and at one point had to go to the bar to ask for water because our waitress had been MIA for nearly 30 minutes. We ordered one appetizer, the nachos, which took almost 45 minutes to arrive (and the waitress was two plates short for us to share and didn't even pass them out individually) - right on top of our entrees, which emerged from the kitchen not two minutes later. Food issues: The Hawaiian chicken was extremely dry and came with dressing-less salad when it was simply described as coming with "vegetables;" the toothpick holding the turkey/avocado/bacon sandwich together was broken, which called for taking the sandwich apart to ensure the diner didn't chomp down on the broken-off tip; there were bones in the Philly sandwich meat; and the stem bit of the avocado was found (in mid-bite) in the guacamole. The waitress also completely mis-ordered one diner's entree, which had to be sent back and resulted in a good 20-minute wait while the rest of us ate. I wish I could say some good things about our waitress, I really do, but she was inattentive, forgetful, and often nowhere to be found. She was friendly enough, but that just didn't cut it. Near the end of the meal, the waitress (about whom we had just finished complaining to the manager) asked if we were ready for our bill. We reminded her that we'd brought a birthday cake, then before we could give her the candles to put on it, she disappeared to the kitchen. She then re-emerged with separate slices on individual plates; the plan had been to put the candles on the cake, sing the requisite birthday song - the whole shebang. The person in our party who had brought the cake had really been looking forward to that bit as a nice surprise and was disappointed. I was told the owners of Z Cafe also run the Hukilau restaurant at Fallbrook Golf Club. This doesn't surprise me, as we've had nearly identical complaints about the Hukilau. Don't get me wrong: The food is pretty good, depending on what you order. But to me, that doesn't justify having downright awful service. read more

We eat here a decent amount. At least a few times a month. We've been for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Z Cafe feels very clean. The service is usually pretty on top of things. The food is good. Not the most amazing flavor, but it's definitely good. The Hawaiian bowls are what we get most. They are really good about 80% of the time...and then 20% they have an odd flavor. Maybe they happened to just clean the grill or something but it has happened a few times. The burgers have always tasted good. The breakfast items we've gotten have all been good as well. We've never had anything that tasted "bad"...just the few times the Hawaiian bowls tasted odd. I will say their coffee is weak and they don't have a lot of dessert options. It can also get fairly loud if it's busy. It's never been a problem in conversation, but it's noticeable at times. The prices are decent, the portions are filling, the restaurant is clean, and the staff is friendly. This is definitely one of the top places to eat in Bonsall/Fallbrook as far as sit down restaurants go. read more
