I've been going to YY for around 7 years and would follow Nick and Robert anywhere. Nick is a color genius and knows how to get my platinum blonde highlights perfect, without any brassiness or yellow. Robert has surgical precision with his haircuts, and despite my extra challenging hair (fine, thin, weird waves), he always makes it look and feel thicker, healthier, and beautifully styled. Beyond their incredible talent, the atmosphere at YY is always welcoming. Michael, who handles the front desk, is so friendly and kind. I love the entire team here. From the moment you step in, the staff is friendly, attentive, and professional. If you're looking for a salon that truly invests in your hair's health and style, I recommend YY highly. read more

I am new to the area and i was looking for a nice hair salon just to get a haircut and styling, i came across this place online and i made an appointment. I feel bad for leaving a bad review but i am going to attach pictures so you can see the disaster they did to my hair. I had HEALTHY LONG BEAUTIFUL hair! I just wanted to cut a little bit the ends. She cut maybe half my hair off, and did some curls. BIG MISTAKE. IF YOU GET A HAIRCUT SEE IT FIRST WITH STRAIGHT HAIR. i left the salon kinda annoyed they cut more than what i originally wanted but it looked good. Two days later i washed my hair and with STRAIGHT hair i ALMOST CRIED when i saw the TERRIBLE HAIRCUT. It looks like i cut it myself in the bathroom with the f lights off. I do not recommend this place at all. read more

I love this salon. I've been getting my hair colored by Nick for 3-4 years, and I've never left disappointed. I have platinum blonde hair so I've had some absolutely terrible experiences at other high-end salons in Richmond and DC. When I first came to the salon, Nick went above and beyond fixing previous stylists' mistakes and coaxing my hair back to health. It's really rare to find a colorist as skilled as Nick in bleaching hair. Prices are more than reasonable for the level of service the salon provides (I've paid twice as much at Katie Blue for color that looks half as good.) Keyla also does a consistently excellent job doing my blowouts. Couldn't recommend the salon highly enough! read more

YY salon is amazing - from making appointment, front staff, the salon, the vibe, and of course Kara the stylist. Upon walking into the salon, it feels fresh, upscale, and relaxing. The salon looks simple but yet beautiful. It is also quiet so you feel very exclusive which I like. The staff will offer you complimentary beverages and snacks right when you check in. My appointment starts on time without waiting, which is important since it shows how professional a place can be. Kara is super down to earth kind of person. She listens to what I like, gives her professional opinions, and then proceeds to cut my hair. It does take a little time for Kara to do my haircut since it's my first time with her. However, she is very patient, and happy fix my hair until I am happy. I really appreciate it since many stylists do show frustration when I keep asking to cut a little bit more or asking too many questions. Kara also writes down the products that she uses on me and gives me samples to take home. I also love this is a strict non-tipping salon. So there is no awkwardness at checking out. The price is fair considering how much time and effort Kara put into. They do have royalty program. You get half off haircut after 7 haircuts. What a deal. Also, a complimentary bang trim in the middle of two haircut appointment. This is the best haircut and also the best salon I have ever been to. I feel like a million bucks walking out. read more

Great salon. I've been here a few times now for color as well as a cut and I think it's safe to say it's my go to place here in RVA. Great service, tips are included, and a loyalty program put YY over the top. Good stuff! read more

Another great cut & experience at YY! The new renovation is absolutely gorgeous, natural light in every space. I had my first cut with Keyla & she did a fantastic job, I love it! Also not to miss- the new product lines they're carrying, davines for hair & Clove + Hallow makeup. (I purchased the Clove + Hallow hydratint blush in "Nakey" shade, highly recommend!) read more

I love YY. Owned by Michael Wood, this is one of the most New York hair experiences you're going to get in Richmond. The salon has a chic, clean atmosphere, and you'll mostly likely get one stylist for cut and one for color. Only problem, great atmosphere and talent doesn't come cheap. Women's cuts start at $100 and men's start at $75, and that's assuming you're seeing the lowest level stylist. Color starts at $100. When I get my hair done, I like lots of colors, creative cuts and upper level stylists. This means lots of money! I've gone to the awesomely talented Matt and Nick a few times, but just can't afford to make them my regular stylists. Along with the hair services, owner Michael Wood has also created his own line of hair and bath products and cosmetics. These are way cool. I'm particularly in love with the YY conditioning styling products. Tree of Heaven and Winterhazel are two different strengths of styling products that have plant derived emollients, vitamins and oils built into them so you get another layer of conditioning when you style your hair. I also really like the Sweet Gum shine spray. It gives a nice gloss without adding oil. All the products are naturally derived and have great unisex earthy scents. Michael recently debuted a new natural makeup line, which is also really cool. You can create customized palettes of eyeshadows or powders, blushes and eyeshadows. I particularly like the selection of highly pigmented sparkly shadows. Stylist Nick Cohen also sells a line of totes and yoga bags there. So, even if you're not there for a cut, stop in and check out the product selection! The salon keeps regular business hours. read more

My first haircut in RVA and it was stellar. I'm a little picky (high maintenance?) with my salons, so I was nervous before I entered YY. My fears were assuaged as soon as I walked in the door. I booked a cut with Kara at $65. She thoroughly examined my hair, asked me what I liked, and what I was going for style-wise. Since I'm not adventurous and cannot pull off a cool pixie like hers, I kept my long layers. Fantastic haircut! The atmosphere is really cool: lots of white furniture, candles, and mirrors...almost a warm, mod feel to the place. Not only are they a no-tipping policy (I was kinda bummed about this because yes, while I can't afford a $100 haircut, but I really did want to tip Kara generously for the great work she did). They're strict about this policy, too. The stylist said they appreciate the gesture, but they prefer to be the type of establishment that doesn't expect or accept tips. The warmth didn't stop there: they gave me a full size bottle of the shampoo they used on me free of charge...I didn't ask for it and mistakenly thought they were pushing product on me. Turns out, it was freezies! How cool is that? Highly recommended. Edited**3.15.12** Still love Kara; wasn't too crazy with my highlights. Got the color corrected (first time I've ever gone back to get something redone); she did her best with a crazy scenario (the color didn't take to my hair). Kinda annoyed that the color washed-out so quickly. Oh, well. I don't take it personally, but my wallet does. It begs me to look elsewhere for my next coloring experience and I'll have to follow it (you can't pay in hugs). If you want a cool cut, I'd still highly recommend Kara. read more

Big city innovation and skill in little old RVA. After being spoiled by the hair talents in Chicago for a few years, I returned to Richmond sure that I would never get a decent color job again. YY proved me wrong by doing amazing highlights and an awesome cut. (Used the most expensive stylist for color and one of the cheapest for the cut. After all, color can be a mess to fix. A bad cut grows out). The color job was one of the best I've had the cut was fab. I see some reviews cite cost. And true, it cost about the same as I paid in Chicago. But WORTH IT. What a gem! read more

I got the best hair cut and color of my life here. I walked out feeling like a million bucks. Too bad I can't afford to go there anymore! The guys here are sweet, funny and amazing. If you have an extra couple hundred, go there and get your hair did. read more

I have tried nearly every salon in Richmond, including the "best" ones on Yelp. But if you have platinum blonde hair, well, you know how hard it is to find someone who can get you there (without killing your hair). I've had some terrible situations at some of the most well-known salons in Richmond. My natural shade is about a 8-9, but I highlight it to an 11-12. Nick at YY is the first person who GOT IT RIGHT (and was gentle on my hair). I'm thrilled to have a place where I can have an ongoing hair-relationship, and know I'm going to get consistently great results. He's a great guy, and has perfect technical skills with hair. Kara cuts my hair, and is doing a great job of preserving length...as I'm trying to grow out my hair...but getting off the damaged portions from when prior stylists overprocessed my blonde. My bangs are in a funky in-between grow-out stage, but she's making them look much more blended and shaped. I am very happy I found YY, and wish I'd found them earlier! I could've saved a lot of hassle, cost, and frustration from the salons with uneven results. read more

I went here on the recommendation from a friend and I'm so glad that I did! Kara did a great job with cut and color. She listened to what I wanted, added her professional opinions and executed a new style with total confidence. See my before & after photos! read more

I have a stylist at another salon, so I didn't go to YY for that. I went for the hairspray! I love Balsa hairspray!

Like the other reviews, I just moved to the area and tried 10 different stylists with no luck... until I stumbled upon YY. Jennifer was fantastic! It was obvious that she was passionate and knowledgeable about her craft. She jokingly said this will change your life and she kept her promise. The BEST stylist I've ever had. Oh, and cost? I would pay triple. Thank you YY. read more

I love YY Salon. I have been a customer for 8 years now and no one does color better than Nick. I always get compliments on my color and always recommend a trip to YY. Kara, April and Jen are wonderful stylists always asking what you want out of the cut so you get what you want. Michael and his entire team are thoughtful, fun and easy going. Color me happy ! ;) Also, french press coffee and snacks... bonus! read more

Everyone at YY was very nice, so I hate doing this... but, well, it was a personal recommendation and Yelp reviews that influenced my decision to chose this salon, and my experience was not representative of the reviews here. So, in keeping with the spirit of what Yelp is all about, I feel like leaving an honest review is necessary. I have brown, naturally curly hair. I scheduled an appointment for a cut and color, and made sure to tell the receptionist that I was coming in to have my dark hair lightened, as I assumed this process may take longer than average. She recommended that I make an appointment with the master colorist at the salon. Sound advice, so I figured the bump in cost would be worth it. Turns out it wasn't :-( When the colorist asked what I wanted, I said that I wanted to cover my new grays and go "bronde" (a very common trend at this point). He didn't seem particularly interested in the interaction between skin tone and hair color. There was no discussion of cool v. warm undertones, etc., etc. He brought out a bunch of hair swatches for ME to choose from, which really threw me. At this price point and with the title of master colorist, I expected that he would be choosing which colors would work for me, as has been my experience in the past. I told him that I trusted his professional judgement and asked that he choose. I ended up with a dark chestnut brown interspersed with a few red-ish and yellow-ish stripes. Color me sad. The cut was done with an associate stylist. Based on my experience, this isn't the type of salon in which you can expect help with choosing a style. I asked for help with this and got a trim instead. I asked for it to be styled naturally with my curls, with the hope that I might be able to replicate it. She left it curly-ish on the bottom layer, but took a round brush and hairdryer to the top layer even though I told her I didn't know how to use that particular technique. It was at this point that I just gave up, went on friendly autopilot, and focused on not crying instead. *To be fair, I told them that I loved it.* They had no opportunity to correct the situation, and I'm guessing based on their personalities and reputation they probably would have offered to try to fix things. The thing is, I was getting ready to cry and I didn't want a correction. I wanted it done right in the first place, and I'd lost faith in their ability to fix anything anyway. I went in wanting lightened and styled curly hair, but I ended up paying $280 for dark brown hair with a few stripes, a trim and a half blowout. Not the end of the world, but certainly not what Yelp and the price tag led me to expect. read more

Beautiful new renovation. Light, space, great services. Mid century modern decor. Make an appointment and you won't disappointed.

Great salon experience. April does a wonderful job cutting hair, which was what I got. She is a great stylist and I recommend her to anyone wanting a beautiful cut. Their products are a bit pricey but they worth buying. Overall you get what you pay for($$$). I had a wonderful experience talking with the owner and the stylist. Great place! read more

So professional, great service, talented and incredibly nice staff. Have loved coming here for years!

I would recommend the YY salon to everyone of all races. The atmosphere is nice. The salon has a good energy and you feel the good energy as soon as you walk into the salon. Also the YY salon owners use and sell their own natural products. I have been using the products for over three years. I bought their products own their website before I started having my hair styled there. Hair Stylist April does my hair. She does well with all types of hair. I have ethnic hair. It is curly; and not all hair stylist can do my hair. I was pleasantly surprised the first time that she cut and colored my hair. I am always pleased with my hair. There is no waiting. It is a pleasant experience. read more

Not being a native to the area, for the past 3 years I've been struggling to find a stylist to replace the great one back home; you know how it is. April at YY was super fantastic! Not only is she confident, knowledgable and experienced, she is fun! I am so thrilled to have found YY thanks to Yelp. The staff really made me feel at ease and welcomed. Prices may be on the higher end, but a cut and color that I am completely happy with is worth it! read more

You get what you pay for here. Honestly, I was a little stressed out about the price, but I've been pretty disappointed with my cuts and color at my other salon. So... I gave it a try! Wonderful experience all around. I have used two of the stylists so far and neither one has disappointed. I get compliments all the time and really am looking forward to going back. I wish they wouldn't have moved from Carytown though. Unfortunately, I won't be able to go to them as frequently as I could with my past stylists because of the cost, but at least I know that I will get what I want on the first try! read more

In response to YYs reaction, I would say that my dissatisfaction with a salon that was relatively new was due to their poor representation in customer service. Not only was your service poor, but so is your attitude. I will never recommend this salon to anyone. read more

I went to YY for my first haircut ever--well not really. Before my first visit to YY I just used to get my hair buzzed at home- a quick pass of the clippers and I was done. I just started growing out my hair and wanted to get a cut done right and found YY here on yelp. The reviews and the fact that new customers got a nice discount plus free shampoo made me call in for an appointment. They were able to get me in the very next day and Dustin was very friendly and patient as I asked questions for my first visit to a salon. I arrived a couple minutes late and apologized to Kara who was super nice about it. She took me through the steps since I had no idea what to expect and had Dustin wash my hair and prep me for the cut/style. I was nervous at first because of the new environment but Kara and Dustin ]were chill and easy to talk to. The cut took only a few minutes and it looked great. Kara explained what I should be doing to my hair and informed me that I could come in at a later date for a free neck cleanup. There was no pressure to buy products or upgrades of any sort. They really make you feel comfortable at YY. Great first time experience and I'll be back in a couple months for my next cut! read more

The entire team here is beyond excellent! I went for color correction, which is very difficult to get right. Everyone spent as much time as was needed to get my hair going in the right direction, which it is! They never rushed through any process; instead, they took care that each step went well. Also, beside being highly qualified in technique, the YY Salon people are fun to be with and pointedly accommodating. Wonderful atmosphere and engagement! read more

If you are in the market for a new salon, this is the place to go in Richmond. I have been with Nick for color a LONG time, and have yet to find anyone better. That says a lot after having my hair done in New York and Chicago at the best salons. I don't even blink at the cost because it includes gratuity and is comparable to any other salon. The signature YY products are wonderful too so make sure to give them a try. read more

This review was long overdue. One of the best Salon's I have ever been to. I went there for a hair cut and I had long unbleached hair which I was hoping to donate to locks of love. The hair stylist (I forget her name) was so good and so patient in understanding what I am going for. She worked on my hair for over an hour (I have super thick hair) and gave me one my best hair cuts. When I was about to pay for it, she informed me that because I am donating my hair, the haircut was free! I was so pleasantly surprised and I was extremely touched by their action. I went there couple of times afterwards. Unfortunately, since then I have moved out of Virginia to Boston and I am on the search for that kind of service. They are a tipless salon so it saves me the anxiety of calculating how much should I be paying in tip, am I tipping less, am I tipping more etc. If they ever open a branch in Boston, I will be there in a second. read more
