I have never gotten my hair professionally dyed but wanted a little change. Valentina was great- she gave me a caramel balayage and some curtain bangs. She definitely listens to you and doesn't cut too much off and is really accurate with cutting only a couple inches off. The process took 4.5 hours but it didn't feel too long. read more

So happy I changed hair stylists. I've been trying to get this hair style for so long (the last time I had my hair cut this way was 2014 in GA). Hillary is amazing. Such high energy and chats with her clients. She has long thick hair like me so she knew exactly what I wanted. I showed her an image and she had me covered. Anna took care of washing my hair. I wish I could get that done 2x a week! The scalp massage was so relaxing. Hillary worked quick and was such a pleasure to talk too. She removed length, reshaped flowed my frown out bangs into layers and removed bulk after she dried my hair. I'm happy now to be a new client here and I adore the location. Pros: The salon is aesthetic and clean. Everyone I interacted with was friendly and helpful. While my hair color did not even approach what I requested, it did not look too bad! Cons: Birch Salon utilizes a staggered pricing system where the customer is charged based off the stylist's experience level. The lowest level is a trainee. This means that folks can get services at a lower price point, but customers may not wind up with what they requested. I suppose if you don't mind inconsistent results and are on a budget, this may not be the worst thing. However, the stylists who are ranked at the top have an above-market charge for coloring services. I mention this because it may constrain availability when booking if experience levels or price points are important to you. Another thing to note is that you have to put down a non-refundable deposit on coloring services at the time of booking. My experience: I recently moved and decided to try out Birch Salon. I had an appointment with a trainee (which I did not fully understand the implications of when I scheduled my appointment-- that's on me). I showed my stylist a couple of picture of the hair color I wanted (a very light blonde), which is one that I have had before. At the time of the appointment, I had partial highlights that had grown out and I was essentially looking to have the roots done and get a full highlight underneath that matched the top. My stylist said she wouldn't be able to get my hair color quite as bright as the photos I showed her in one session, but that we could get pretty close. At the end, she seemed a little nervous and asked if I liked it. My hair-- which is naturally a medium brown-- had barely lifted at all. However, to her credit, it did look natural and not streaky. In terms of styling after washing the dye out, she just blew it dry. There was a bit of a dent in my hair at the top and it completely frizzed up within 20 minutes of leaving the salon. I've attached a photo here and you can compare it to photos I've posted in the review I did of my previous salon, which I absolutely loved. I had to leave the next morning for an extended trip and didn't have time to come back for a correction so I just said it was fine. When I got home, my husband was confused because it looked like I didn't have anything done and he jokingly asked "Did she forget to put on the bleach?" Overall, definitely not the worst experience ever, but I prefer to go somewhere with more consistency. read more

I had very long hair and was nervous and apprehensive about cutting it, but Hillary was absolutely amazing. From the moment we began the consultation I felt at ease, and that is not something I can say happens often for me. I wanted a huge transformation for 2019, so finding Hillary was meant to be. She is experienced and understood exactly what I wanted. She literally transformed my lifeless locks into a style with body, shine, and movement. I already booked my full balayage with her. By the way, I couldn't help but to look around at the other clients and stylists to see what colors and cuts they were getting and it seems no matter who you trust with your hair at Birch, you will be pleased. The receptionist is sweet, accommodating and offers red wine (other things too, but red wine). I recommend my lovely gal Daryllyn for...anything, really. Couldn't be happier! I went there to get my hair dyed and cut slightly and honestly, probably the best haircut I have ever had in my life! I got a terrible cut a year ago and have been super apprehensive/cautious since then, but Erin did such a great job, and even fixed the super choppy and uneven layers I had! It now looks like my hair wasn't cut by a 3 year old, success! :) In terms of color I couldn't be happier too. Erin listened SO WELL to what I wanted, and even triple checked to make sure the color was right!! This was my first time dying my hair completely, and I was nervous but so happy I had Erin to do it :). She did an AMAZING job with the color, and it was so affordable too! Reviewing & sharing my experience with Birch Salon's front desk scheduling employee. On the morning of 5/25/21 at 10:56 am i called Birch to schedule an appointment. The front desk told me Katelyn had a cancellation on 5/26/21 at 3:30 pm and asked if I wanted it. I took the appointment and the front desk worker took all my card information to secure the appointment. At the end of the phone call she confirmed I was booked for my haircut & to call the salon when I arrived for my appointment. On 5/26/21 At 3:25pm I called Birch salon to let them know I arrived for my appointment. Unfortunately, they had no recollection of my appointment or my card information. ( so who knows where my card information went)....The front desk worker who booked my appointment said she had no memory of speaking with me. I was then told I couldn't of booked the appointment because the appointment was booked at 11:00am to someone else on the waitlist. I called at 10:56am. I realize accidents happen however, I wish they would of just owned up to overbooking. After taking a half day of work and driving an hour in total to be told that I hadn't made an appointment is frustrating ( considering I literally booked the appointment with the front desk girl ) They did offer me a discounted haircut in the future. However, I declined. This salons front desk workers lack organizational skill. read more

This is one of those hair salons that seems to transport you. It's not like a simple run of the mill hair place, and the aesthetics can you tell that on your initial impression. It's also been positioned in Carytown for awhile now, so they must be doing something right to maintain a location in such a hip area of the city. The owner, Hillary, is very personable; a great personality. The other stylists that I have had (only two others) are also really friendly as well, and everyone I've had has seemed genuinely interested in the conversation during the haircut as well. I imagine with such a small and tight knit team, it's probably true across the board. I am a guy, so I can't speak for the ladies, but the haircuts I receive there are always very classy looking and they take my personal qualms (no clippers) seriously. I do the standard shorter on the sides and long up top. Other places I have been in the past will hear me say no clippers but then resort to them as an easy out. I don't like clippers because when my hair gets that short it seems to stand up on end. That's not the case for Birch Salon. The prices aren't as cheap as a Hair Cuttery or somewhere like that, but the they aren't really much more expensive either. The quality though is incomparable as I haven't once left Birch thinking, "well, it'll grow back." I always feel confident when I leave. The moment I walked in, I was offered a hot coffee (since 9am is a little too early for wine) from the sweet receptionist and happily greeted by their junior stylist, Lindsay. Lindsay was amazing - I wasn't sure what style I wanted, only that I was prepared to cut off about 8". She took the time to thoroughly discuss what would work best for my face shape and daily lifestyle. My wash included a hot towel & massage - a nice way to start my Saturday morning! Prices are extremely reasonable. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that first time customers receive a 20% off discount - a wash, cut and style cost me $30 plus tip. I've received so many compliments on my hair - even a stranger stopped me in the street to compliment my cut. I highly recommend Birch salon and Lindsay! read more

Saw the very talented and down to earth Malia---suggest you do the same! This salon is such a gem, and it attracts the right kind of people. They fit me on in the fly which I totally appreciated, but the most important part is that I was able to say just a few things and leave the rest to the artist! My hair was ruined after going blonde and then receiving several not so great haircuts that totally changed the shape of my hair. After going to Birch Salon I finally look and feel like me again! I recently moved to RVA and was looking for a good place to get a cut/color. I got my cut from Hillary and she did a wonderful job. My cut was a big change for me (super short) and I couldn't be happier with my decision! Hillary looked at my inspo pics and provided great guidance on what cut would be best based on the photos I was showing her. I got a partial balayage from Valentina and she did an amaaaazing job. I called for an appointment with Jen, (who is absolutely great, btw) and for the second time was told that she had no availability (forever?), and I could put my name on the wait-list if I would like. For a haircut? Note to the reader, I've tried that before, and they don't call you back. Jen is really talented and should find another salon that understands customer service - or at least demand they do something about their receptionist. I recently moved to Richmond and still hadn't found my go-to hair salon. As someone who has worked in salon before and has been going to the same one for years now, I was a little skeptical and very picky to who and what salon was going to touch my hair. As soon as I found Birch Salon on Instagram, I fell in love. Their work is definitely something right up my alley with all the balayages and wavy tousled hair. I first went for a consultation with Anne who was very knowledgeable and we set a game plan for what we were going to do with my hair. Unfortunately, I had to cancel our appointment and it was hard to get an appointment with her as I work 8:30 - 5 during the week and it's hard to grab a weekend appointment. After months of going back and forth and rescheduling, I finally had my hair cut yesterday with Amanda who was great! She was so nice and really listened to what I wanted and gave me a great hair cut and my hair feels soooo much healthier. The prices at the salon are not too bad either- not too expensive but not exactly hair cuttery cheap either. I was in Richmond for a short-term job and feel SO lucky to have found Birch!! I had my hair cut by both Lindsey and Anne, both of whom did a phenomenal job. (If you're a Parks and Rec fan, I think you kind of have to give Anne Perkins a try...) I have lots of fine hair, and most stylists struggle to handle both thickness and fine strands - not so at Birch.
