Hannah gave me my facial and was great. Explained everything to me and checked to make sure the tools were not causing me discomfort. I've had facials, pedicures, manicures, and massages here. Every time I've enjoyed my service as it's a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. It isn't stressful or loud. It's exactly the vibe you want when heading for a self care day. The products they use are 100% house-made and organic. I've had skin reactions before, but never here. As a matter of fact, other spas have left my face looking red and inflamed after facials - I leave here glowing. Now I can't speak to any of the other massage therapists here, but Tsondu is who I see any time I'm seeking a massage. I truly feel like he is a healer in some way. Come here if you want to be cheated out of your money. I don't even know where to start. My husband and I made appointments for mani/pedi's 2 months in advance to celebrate our birthdays with some relaxation. We took off of work and were excited for some pampering. Then, 1.5 days before, I checked the website and saw that the type of pedicure I booked for myself was no longer listed and the price for his pedicure (the libation beer pedicure, now called "local brew spirited") had gone up 15%. The manicure prices had also increased. We'd received no outreach in advance to tell us that a service we'd booked was no longer available and were given no notice of the price change. I reached out about our concerns and was simply told that the services and pricing had changed and there was nothing that could be done except pick different services if we wanted. There was no effort from management and obviously no plan for the customers this impacted. Given the short notice, we didn't have many other options so we showed up for our appointments, keeping a positive mindset. We were gravely disappointed. Among other things, my husband's pedicure started 30 minutes late. We were charged $99 for his libation beer pedicure (estimated to take 1 hour) yet they somehow wrapped his up in about 30 minutes and we both moved to manicures at the same time. On top of that, he did not get what was promised on the website. His pedicure was almost identical to mine (despite being $30 more) except for one difference: He was given half a can of beer (he had no choice in the type) to drink and the other half was poured in his foot bath. I suppose the half a beer in the foot bath was what made it a "beer soak." but there was no "fresh lemon" on top. There was also no "draft beer nourishing masque." The woman used the exact same products and steps on his feet as on mine (from the same tray of products). For my manicure ($69), I got regular polish (non gel). I'm aware that this typically only lasts a few days but mine had significant chips within about 12 hours (they actually weren't perfect when I left the salon but by that point I was so frustrated I just left) including 2 nails that had completely peeled off. In that time, I didn't shower, do dishes, clean, etc... so there's no reason why they'd have such significant damage. I had lunch with my friends for my birthday and they were appalled. Completely shocked by the state of them after less than a day. I had to repaint the two nails that had peeled in a different color (which has managed to stay on without any chipping for 2 days now). By 24 hours later, there were even more huge chips/portions peeled off. I will be finding a new salon. read more

Great things to say. My top comment is the quiet atmosphere which is SO SO lacking at other nail salons where you go for relaxation and a little down time (and I'm going to be very candid) and staff as well as clients are screeching and guffawing loudly acting like everyone is interested in their personal events of the night before. Ugh. This is not that. Serene, tea, relaxing, but not sterile like a library but pleasant levels of conversation. Just right! (If this isn't for you then it's not but I love it!) Next i repeat, a wonderful tea is always offered. Lemon ginger last time. Also... organic so that's wonderful! The technicians are very good. The prices are reasonable. Parking isn't terrible for Carytown as there is a garage nearby. I have only gone for manicures but know they offer other services. The shellac manicure and herbal pedicure were both wonderful. The technicians were great and the atmosphere was so peaceful and relaxing.

Unfortunately, this salon seems to be going downhill. The first time I ever went it was really nice. My most recent experience (2/23) was not good. My friend and I went for a girls night out. We asked for dip manicures and pedicures. My nail technician did not know how to do a French dip manicure. Instead of telling me she did not know how to do it, she did a clear dip, and then painted the French with shellac. I told her that's not really what I wanted, but it was too late to change it. If she would've told me, then I would've made a different decision to not go with French. Once it was finished, I could see that the dip didn't even cover the whole nail bed. Plus, they were too thick with too much product and bumpy because she did not go back to smooth things over. To add insult to injury, when I checked out at the front desk, they charged me for the dip and a shellac. Plus they charge to soak off your previous dip! Absolutely ridiculous since there's no way to do Dip without removing the prior dip. My friends experience was even worse. She had two different nail technicians, one for the manicure, one for the pedicure. My technician at least soaked my dip off while I was having my pedicure. My friends technician did not do that because she was busy with another client. So when my friends technician started on her manicure, she used the cuticle tool to pry off the previous dip which caused pain to my friend. It was a ridiculous experience. I called the manager the next day, and he wasn't interested in making sure that we are repeat customers. He told me I could come back to have one or two of my nails repaired, but he would not redo all of them. We were disappointed and we will never go back. read more

Absolutely amazing experience from the moment I entered until I left. They have the most soothing and satisfying teas that will heal you from the inside out. So my day included a body polish, body wrap, massage, welcome drink, and lunch. I started coming to Perception about a year ago. I have now made it my regular spot to get my nails done, specifically with Thi. Thi is one of the kindest people and she has been a joy to work with. Many times I have requested a special nail design and she has gone above and beyond to meet my needs. I was not someone who regularly got manicures before meeting Thi and am so glad I was able to get paired up with her at my first appointment! The salon in general is always clean, smells great, and I'm always greeted by friendly faces at the front. The complimentary ginger lemongrass tea is delicious and a great touch to the visit. Cozy, comfortable, professional, relaxing - if this place was in my home town, I would go every time! Chloe was so helpful and friendly, she helped me pick a color and actually tried multiple colors on my fingers to help me choose! I was offered coffee, tea or water when I came in. The atmosphere was very relaxing, soft instrumental music played and it smelled nice too! (no acetone/nail polish smell like most places) I got the shellac manicure and an aromatic pedicure. Upon walking in I noticed a very relaxing aroma. The person that was going to be helping me was doing eyebrows and would be out shortly. I was asked if I wanted tea or water to which I declined for the moment. I just wanted to take in my environment. Moments later someone named Tee introduced herself to me and she would be the one helping me. She was extremely nice throughout the whole experience and she did a great job on the pedicure as well as the manicure. I gave it a 3 star rating because to me it was average. For the same price Escape Nail Spa offers more. They not only offer water or tea, they offer wine, champagne and delicious fresh fruit not to mention a neck massage, and very relaxing music, all included for the same price. Perception had no music playing so you just heard other conversations going on. Relaxing music could have helped with relaxation, and to drown out other people talking. I guess it depends on how serious you are about getting organic products for your nails. I am SUPER impressed with this place after my first time going. I have been wanting to get a pedicure but I'm definitely on the overcautious side of the COVID protocols and I didn't want to go to a salon with lots of stations. I did some research and found this place. I was able to book my appointment online which I liked. Before my appt I had to fill out a detailed COVID tracking sheet. When you arrive you call them and they tell you when you can enter. Your temp is taken and you are escorted to wash your hands. I was promptly taken back and besides myself there was only one other customer in the nail area. The employees all wore masks and the manicure stations had plexiglass separations. The pedicure stations did not but all of the utensils were autoclaved and the stations were sanitized before and after clients. The one thing I will say is it was more than I usually pay for this service, HOWEVER since I hadn't gone since Dec 2019 and the COVID protocols were the most important to me at thus point I felt the price was well worth it! read more

The jist: I requested a "gel manicure" and had to pay $67 for it to last less than 8 days. The detail: Made an appointment over the phone for 3 of us for 2 "gel manicures" and 1 "reg manicure" for 2:30pm on 11/22/19. It was all our first time there. Got to the salon and receptionist gave a friendly welcome, confirmed our 2 gel manis and a reg mani appointments, and gave us tea. The overall appointment was nice enough - the timing was a little funny with them staggering us and still not ending around the same time but it wasn't a big deal. After our nails were all painted, we each got an exfoliant, then got a hand clay mask into heated gloves, and a warm towel. It was a nice finish to our manicures but we weren't asked or told that they were going to happen so we assumed it was a part of their regular "manicure" package - because the technicians just did it without saying anything to any of us. Once we got rung up, the "reg mani" was $35, my friends "gel mani" with no gel removal was $62, and my "gel mani" with gel removal was $67. Seriously? I was so shocked I didn't even know how to react so I just paid it my $67 and that decision still haunts me. Hence, me now making this review. And why it haunts me so much is not the excess price that we were not told about (because I definitely saw on their site that a "gel mani" should be $42). It's because this wrongly sold gel mani lasted less than EIGHT days later (on 11/30/19), I completely lost paint on an entire nail and have major chipping. I've been doing gel polish every 3 weeks for the last 2 years and this was the shortest lasts gel mani I've ever received. And to be fair, looking now I see my one friends "reg mani" was the "detox manicure" which is accurately $35. And somehow the "gel mani's" for me and my other friend must have been a combo of a detox gel mani, which was not on the list. But if a place is going to add one or upcharges, we should be told up front when it was verbally confirmed three times that we wanted a "gel manicure" (once in the phone, once when we first got there, and another time right before we got seated). read more

A day full of pampering and this was one of my stops. I had the herbal pedicure which was the best, I've ever had! The foot massage was on point and the nail tech had my toe polish on point. The massage chair you sit in was amazing too. Next, I had the botanical collagen fresh organic fruit mask...soooooo relaxing! Final step, was a hot stone massage...much needed! The receptionist offered me either tea or water and I chose the tea of the day which was a detox tea. I love tea so I was really happy to have it as an option! It was absolutely delicious. It really helped me get into the relaxation mood right before my treatment. I was really happy with the polish selections too! All I need is a great pink or a deep red and I'm set. I tend to stick with those tones and they had more than enough colors to choose from. Although I'm not vegan by any stretch of the imagination, it is nice to see that they have that as an option. Had the same male nail technician for my dip nails on each occasion and he did an amazing job! They are beyond perfect! See photo evidence! The atmosphere is quiet with soft lighting and they have soothing background music playing. Very relaxing vibes. They always offer a beverage and even check on you halfway through your service to see if you need a refill or to see if you've changed your mind and want a tea or water. An amazing gem of a spa! My boyfriend and are came down for the weekend to visit family, and decided on a spur of the moment spa day. The spa itself has a cozy/zen vibe and was very clean. The receptionist was prompt and polite, and scheduled us for a couples massage at our desired time. Our massage therapists (wonderful young man and woman whose names are escaping me now) were caring, attentive, and really focused making sure we were having a relaxing experience. Pre-pandemic I purchased 2 massage gift certificates. My son attempted to use the first one in January, 2021. He was, at first, told there was no balance on the gift certificate. I was then required to provide proof of the purchase which was difficult because I had to research credit card statements to find it. After the staff was satisfied, I received an apology and an assurance that the remaining massage would be "on my account". My son called for an appointment several months later to use the remaining certificate. Again, he was subjected to scrutiny about the purchase and I again had to provide proof of the purchase. He was even told by an employee that "he could not show up every few months claiming he had a free massage". The inefficiency and poor attitude of management is unacceptable. The massages were excellent and I would love to remain a customer but I will not. read more

They require you to wash your hands frequently, which is great. There is plastic in place and all employees are wearing masks. **UPDATE: a few hours after posting this I have literally had 2 hard gel nails just POP OFF. I was working with papers in my office, nothing out of the ordinary.** I hate giving bad reviews but I have not had a worse experience getting my nails done. I tried this salon as the ones in Charlottesville are hit and miss and I have not found "the one" since moving here. I was in town to get my hair done and decided to make an appointment based on the great reviews. He did not prep my nails besides a quick pass with the sanding bit - I was wearing a clear polish and he didn't even remove that before starting (and no, the quick pass did not remove even MOST of the polish). He used grinding bits that were already used on another person - I don't know the health code in VA, but in CA we don't get to do that and it grossed me out... at least his file was new (I think?). I asked him for a natural as possible look to the shape and thickness of the hard gel and pointed out the natural shape of my real nails, he definitely was not paying attention to my preferences at all - the man barely spoke a word the whole time besides to his coworker next to him in another language (it feels SO alienating when this is done - if you need to communicate something that can't wait I understand, but they were just chit-chatting and laughing). My nails looked like thick square tips circa 2003. I asked him a few times to fix certain nails due to length discrepancies but I knew it was becoming pointless. At one point he broke the gel tip off my left ring finger and JUST LEFT IT OFF. I have 10 medium length nails and one short. The point of coming in for hard gel nails is so that they are more uniform looking. The paint I chose was a light pink and he left streaks on almost every nail, it REALLY needed another coat but by the time I could utter a word he was already applying the top coat. He grabbed a small fan and pointed it in my general direction and said "give it ten minutes" and walked away and immediately started working on someone else next to me. The fan needed to be adjusted and I damaged the paint on one of my nails. I was honest with the front counter when it came time to check out and she discounted the price from $60 to $49 and offered to schedule a time to come back to fix it as I was leaving to another appointment that moment. I told her I did not have the time that day before they closed (I was meeting friends for my birthday dinner) and I cannot justify a drive back to Richmond to fix this another time. I came home frustrated and took off the polish, REFILED ALL MY NAILS, and applied my own polish so I didn't look like trash. If I wanted a crap walk-in corner nail salon experience for $20, I would have stayed in Cville. I have already lost my pointer fingernail (the entire thing lifted while washing my hair this morning) and it's been 36 hours. EXTRAORDINARILY disappointed. read more
