Madeleine was amazing! I had recently cut my long curly hair really short and had balayage done at another salon. The cut however was a bit choppy and didn't work well with my curls and the color faded a bit orange. She fixed my previous hair cut and knew exactly how to cut my curly hair in beautiful layers. She also toned my color in a nice dark red/brown and got rid of the orange undertones I came in with. She gave suggestions on cutting my hair in a certain way and I'm beyond happy with the result. I went today for my first time and although everyone was great the outcome was awful. My hair looks nothing like what I asked my hair dresser and she trimmed significantly more, making me have to go to square one on growing my hair. It was pricey and now I have to find someone else to fix this mistake. I showed the hairdresser a picture as reference and we spoke about how I wanted the roots to remain my natural color and that I was not interested in a brassy color. However, I needed up with all over brassy highlights that have a very 90s feel. I feel like you really need to listen to you customers and if it's out of your scope to let them know so expectations aren't shattered. A treat turned into a a sad situation. Everytime I look in the mirror I feel the worst pang of sadness. read more

The silliest $30 I have spent in a long time. I came with a defined time of availability, which I made clear to the front desk associate - 45 minutes. My time restraint was ignored, as I was walking out of there an hour and fifteen minutes later. The blow-out I received was offensively terrible. My roots were hacked at with a teasing comb - now I have dozens of fractured hair strands. The teasing led to a heinous "bump-it" effect on both sides of my head. I had to go home and brush it out. What a waste of time and money. A simple blowout is too much for this juvenile salon to handle. For the welfare of your hair, don't go. read more

When you walk into Birch it feels fresh and clean, the receptionists greet you warmly and offer you drinks from water to wine to coffee. The owner Hillary is so amazing- her eyebrow waxes are the best I've ever had, blowdries last for days and haircuts are perfection. This review is really about Malia, one of Birch's stylists. I went in yesterday for the first time due to a referral from a friend. I only went in for a haircut because I was tired of my one-length, boring, flat hair, and Malia did an ammaazzzinnnngggg job capturing exactly what I wanted. I wanted a non-conventional, razored, layered haircut, kind of edgy and Malia basically took the idea out of my head and made it happen. I love my hair. I will totally be going back, don't even really feel the need to try anywhere else. I also thought it was pretty affordable with the quality that I got. Can't say enough good things about Malia. So many great things about Birch! The ambiance is lovely and i always enjoy taking in the decor... you just have to see it, very fun details! Hillary is wonderful (pretty sure she started the salon), and she initially helped Lindsay with my cut & color back in Oct '14 (when she was still an apprentice). They made a first time mom of a 3 month old feel brand new, with my snazzy swing bob (showed them pics off Pinterest and they got it just right)! I went back to Lindsay this month and I'm so happy with my cut and color! She was very patient, figuring out what color I really wanted (and didn't want!) and showing me samples. I love how she styled it at the end, a smooth Bob with just - right volume and great movement. I could write more, but sleep is precious these days, and you get the point... I went to Birch for the first time recently, and I am very happy. It was easy to make an appointment, everyone was friendly and kind, and there was no wait. I saw Lindsay, who was great; asking me my thoughts about the process as we went and making sure that I was happy with the plan. She was charming and easy to talk to, but most of all was great at her job. My hair was pretty rough before coming in, and she somehow managed to get rid of the unhealthy dry parts while maintaining length. I made my next appointment before I even left the salon. I believe it's only street parking, but that part of carytown doesn't seem to be hurting for spots. It's also worth pointing out that they take credit cards and allow you to put the tip on the card (in case you forgot to bring cash). read more

I've read great things about Lindsey, and I must admit she lives up to her reputation. I came here back in July for a simple haircut and it went wonderfully. Do note that you should make a reservation; the first time I walked in they didn't have any available times that worked with my schedule. A haircut with Lindsey cost me $30 (+$5 tip), which absolutely did not break the bank at all, considering my last haircut cost me over $70. She did a beautiful job! I showed her a picture of a style I wanted on Instagram and she did just that. The haircut includes wash, cut, and style as well. I also loved that she gave me a nice head massage during the wash. I had a great experience here with Maddie! I think this may have been the first time I've ever left a haircut actually loving the way it looks...I usually have to go home and fiddle with it or wash and re-style it before I like it. She took the time to style and dry my hair to reflect how I actually do it (usually air dry), so that she could layer it well. She paid attention to detail and took her time to get it right. I love the bangs she gave me especially. I was impressed with all the different techniques she used--I don't know anything about cutting hair but I can tell she knows what she's doing. Plus she was super nice and easy to talk to. The salon is gorgeous and in a convenient spot by Carytown. For the quality of the cut I got, the price was very fair! My view about Birch has changed so much. After a haircut I was unhappy with and a scheduling miscommunication about getting back to fix it, the owner Hillary contacted me directly. She brought me back in within less than a week, was super accommodating to my schedule, and gave me a great haircut! First of all this place is in a great location. I'm not sure if it's because I went in the middle of the week or what but parking was no problem. Everyone was very friendly when I came in. I got a curly cut by Maddie. It was my first curly cut and she explained every step so I knew what was going on. I LOVE MY HAIR! The curls have never looked so good. I absolutely adored my experience at Birch! I don't frequently "do stuff" to my hair but decided I wanted to get a lavender balayage. Lindsey was so great during both the consultation visit and the FIVE hours I spent sitting in her chair. The salon feels like a place you could easily go to hang out (one client brought his adorable bulldog in!) and it's so cute inside. I will give one word of advice: if you're thinking of getting a "fashion shade," don't underestimate how quickly it'll fade if they tell you it'll fade fast. I got my hair done 11 days ago and have washed it only four times since then (with the special shampoo/ conditioner for color treated hair that I bought at the salon) and most of the lavender/ purple is gone. When I called to ask what was up, I spoke with Amanda (Ashley?) at the front desk who was super sweet and very accommodating, stating that she was going to talk to the owner and Lindsey to see what was up. Ultimately she told me that I'd have to deal with it (MY words, not hers haha) because pastel colors fade super quick. I guess I didn't expect "fading fast" to mean "after 4 washes" but now I know! Still will totally go back as it was overall a great experience. Just think twice before dropping the serious cash on pastel colors! read more

I had a toner put in because my balayage had turned brassy. Malia was super sweet and did an amazing job.She made great suggestions and my hair colour turned out exactly how I wanted it to. Adding on to all the positive, happy reviews. I stopped by birch, as being a transplant to RVA, I had no go-to hairdresser. Birch did not disappoint, in fact, many of my friends decided to book and appointment shortly after my first one. Hilary has always done my hair, so it's hard for me to rate the other stylists in depth, but I will say this-- all my friends have ended up with great hair following their appointments. Hilary listens to what you want and can replicate it. Bring those Pinterest pics in, girls & guys, you'll get exactly that either on the first appointment or over time (depending on what you're going for). Hilary is conscious of hair damage and will give you her honest opinion of what is okay to do and what might not be, even with time. They do not push products on you, but will give you their opinion if asked. The atmosphere of the salon is chic and cozy! Please do go here if you're unsure of a place, I promise it will be worth it! When I first came here, Lindsay was my stylist and I was sad to find out she wasn't there anymore! However, I got an appointment set up with Anna and I was not disappointed! I have very thick hair so I'm quite particular with who I want to cut my hair. After reading reviews about Anna, I had a good feeling about her. I keep my hair pretty simple and she did a fabulous job creating long bob with layers. I even asked her to put some waves in it and she taught me how to do it, which I've slowly been practicing. I love this place! I moved to Richmond earlier this year and have been searching for a new salon. I tried a high end salon in the area and was not at all satisfied with the cut and the price was outrageous. I looked on Yelp for another salon and that brought me here. Anna cut my hair last week and the cut was exactly what I wanted! I have very straight, thick hair which can be tricky to cut but she knew exactly what to do and it looks great! She really listened to what I wanted and even looked at pictures on my phone of examples. Had an awesome experience with Malia last week! She took on my massive project with so much enthusiasm and grace; we cut off around 8 inches of hair, raised and detailed my undercut, did a full balayage and then created an amazingly perfect shade of pink to color with! She gave me an awesome cut and style that was fun and is proving easy to manage. Malia was great to work with from the consultation to the completion of the appointment, and I'm already excited to go back in! I went in as a blonde to have a balayage done, my appointment was with Madeline. I showed her a picture of what I was thinking. She applied color, After she shampooed my hair my entire head was dark brown almost black. She was very nice but realized something had gone terribly wrong. She worked on my head four hours trying to make thing right, when I left I was ash blonde from ears down and very dark brown from ears up plus some orange/copper on top. Nothing like I wanted, nothing like the picture. I felt bad and I know she felt bad. At the end of four hours she said she had done all she could do, I should have more highlights at the roots in a few weeks. This was Monday at 5pm, by Thursday when they opened I had decided I could not live with my hair looking the way it did. I called to talk to the owner, Hilary, she never spoke with me but told the person on the phone she would talk to Madeline and get back to me, they called again Friday and Saturday saying the same thing. Today is Monday a week later and no phone call! I guess I will go elsewhere and pay whatever I have to to get my hair looking normal. I decided to go to this salon based on the reviews and was very excited about having my hair done. It turned out to be a disaster and the owner doesn't seem to want to make things right. I've never been a person to commit to a Salon before - instead I would go from salon to salon, never fully satisfied with the service I received. They were adequate and nice, but something just didn't click. Birch has changed that for me. From the moment you walk in the door, the environment is serene and beautiful to be in. When you check in, the employees immediately see to your wants and needs; bringing you anything from water to wine to iced coffee. (The latter is my personal preference.) From my first appointment, Anne (Perkins!) really listened to what I wanted and made suggestions based on pictures I showed her and by getting to know my taste in a few minutes. Whenever I had questions about my hair type and how to maintain my new style, she had all the answers. She even showed me how to do it! During my latest trip to Birch, as Anne's last appointment of the day, she spent an incredible FOUR HOURS to make sure my new color was absolutely perfect. If that doesn't prove her commitment to the art of hair styling and to customer satisfaction, I don't know what does. This adorable little salon is where I have found my hair's new best friend in owner and master stylist, Hillary. After suffering through some pretty awful haircuts and colors over the years I made sure to get a consultation before setting my appointment just to make sure we were on the same page and get a feel for the person who would have their hands on my noggin. From the first greeting, Hillary was welcoming, kind, and absolutely knew what she was talking about. I immediately made my appointment for a full balayage and a trim. Well let me tell you what. I spent three hours in her chair (I have a lot of hair, y'all.) and it flew by because of Hillary's wonderful personality. We chatted like we'd known one another for years. By the end of the appointment I had EXACTLY what I had come in wanting- and if you know me and how picky I am with my hair, that's saying A LOT.
