This is the first time I went to get my hair cut and felt like someone really "got" me. Taylor listened to my (vague) description of what I wanted and rocked and rolled with it, told me what would look cool based on my hair texture and preferences, and gave me exactly what I didn't know I needed. I have been to this salon 3 times now. NEVER AGAIN! The salon's policy is absolutely frustrating, hypocritical and insulting. Firstly, I was required to sign a document that explicitly stated I would not engage in any form of harassment, misogyny, or inappropriate behavior. While I understand the importance of ensuring a safe and respectful environment, I found it deeply upsetting that they have such low expectations of their customers. The fact that they assume they need to specifically outline such basic standards of human decency is insulting. Secondly, they have a strict rule that if you're late, you get charged extra fees - fair enough, we all know time is valuable. I was 15 mins late and got charged $20. The stylist had left by the time I got there. So the trip was a complete waste of time. Upon my most recent visit my daughter and I waited 15 mins for the stylist to arrive. I was greeted with "oh you didn't check your text?" Like it was my fault! So if the stylist is late, nothing happens. No discount, no apology, no compensation. If they're going to charge clients for being late, there should be some accountability when it's the salon's fault. It's a shame because I liked the stylist, but I can't support a business that doesn't treat its customers fairly. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Luminary Hair Co. ! I was easily able to set up an appointment short notice to save my self-bleached/dyed hair job that resulted in orange, yellow hair. I was shortly contacted by Blake (my assigned stylist) to arrange my appointment and get down to my vision. My hair appointment was a success and gone was my orange hair, and I had my requested ash blonde hair, and topped with the perfect hair cut and blow out. Blake was so friendly and hilarious, and talked me through the whole process as I was clueless to anything hair related. Cannot wait for my next appointment! Highly Recommend! read more

Terrible customer service from front desk staff. Even after clear communication from my part asking about mask policy (which had changed from masks required to masks optional overnight), staff was not clear about mask policy which resulted in me being 90 seconds late. Because of being 90 seconds late, this resulted in a $20 fee while being rudely told "this is our policy on our website". Front desk staff was very rude and unaccommodating. Asked for a very quick trim as I have short hair and needed to get my hair cut for a business trip - but 18 minutes apparently was not enough time for this to happen even though I would have willingly paid full price and generally tip 50% to my barber. I wanted to be able to give this place and try and give it my business as I had been recommended it by someone years ago, but it seems things have changed. I'll take my business elsewhere as I know I'm appreciated and respected quite a bit more at just about every other barbershop I have been to in the Richmond area even at the same price point Luminary offers. Pine Street Barber took care of me, my hair looks great, and the staff were particularly nice, accommodating, and not stuffy nor snobby. Hard pass on Luminary; go somewhere else. I told my friend about how I had been treated as well and they lost another customer as she was shocked, since she had been treated so differently when she had gone previously. Whatever changed, changed for the worse I guess. On a side note, if you do want the mullet hairstyle with the very high fade on the sides, that cut that's all the rage amongst VCU art-kids in 2022, it appears that style is the majority of what they specialize in, so maybe go there if you would like that particular cut. Love, love, love! Richmond has so many individual hair salons, that it can be hard to choose. After lots of research, I chose Luminary based on other reviews, the positive vibe I got from its website, and gallery of past haircuts. I am so glad I came here! I called on a Wednesday for a Friday appointment, and when I arrived today, I was happily greeted by Abby. She offered me a coffee or a tea, and then my hairstylist, Caiti welcomed me to her chair. She asked me questions about what I was looking to get and was personable and kind. She gave my hair a quick wash and proceeded with the haircut. I will say that I missed getting a head massage that other salon stylists typically give. However, I got exactly what I was looking for! I will say I was prescriptive about length, shape, and style, and Caiti knew exactly what to do. My hair was a little past my shoulders and is slightly curly. Caiti used a diffuser to dry it out at the end of the cut to ensure the length met my expectations. She also maintained my layers by using a razor, and it really lightened up my hair. Throughout the experience, which took about 45 minutes, Caiti was conversational and dedicated to creating the look I was hoping for. The overall feel of the salon is also fun. At this time of year, there were Halloween decorations at each station. The waiting area has comfy couches. On my way out, I had a friendly chat with Abby, and Caiti handed me her card in case I had questions after leaving. It was so relaxed coming here! Before discovering Daisy at Luminary, I had given up on the idea of finding a place to get my nails done on the East End and had resigned to getting them done elsewhere in the city. I have been getting my hair cut by Tina for the past 6 months. She is responsible for some of my best hair days for sure! I have fine, wavy hair and she is very knowledgeable on how to cut it (dry cut, diffuses after she cuts it). Additionally, she is super sweet and funny! It is a little pricey ($60 + tip for a cut) but 1000% worth it. All of the staff are super kind. I would recommend luminary to anyone in need of a good cut. They offer $10 bang trips which is perfect if your bangs get too grown out but you don't want to drop $60 for a trim when you don't need one yet. read more

i never leave yelp reviews because i'm understanding and don't take things too seriously, but i had a very annoying experience here. i wish i could speak on the stylists, which seem great, but we never got to see one. my partner had an appointment for 1:30pm and we were told by the front desk that there was a 10 minute grace period. we show up and are speaking with her at exactly 1:40pm just to be told that we had missed the grace period. literally held up my phone to show her it had just turned 1:40pm. although she had a nice, seemingly fake friendly demeanor it was so stressful trying to question and make sense of how we missed the grace period when it was perfect timing. it made us not want to reschedule an appointment, (that we had been excited about) due to this.. maybe a new and more sympathetic/rational? front desk receptionist would help. read more

Everyone is very kind at Luminary. I love the aesthetics of the salon; it is calming just sitting there with a cup of complimentary coffee. My partner and I have both had our hair cut here twice by three different stylists. All three are good listeners but I think for my first haircut here I did not describe what I was looking for as well as I should have and it did not come out exactly as I wished (I think the same happened to my partner). This was mainly my own fault. The second time we went here I made sure to describe what I was looking for in more technical-hair-cutting-terms and everything came out as I wanted it to. This place is just a great friggin little shop to get your hair cut, done, did, done up, done down, styled, shaved, arranged and rearranged. The owner is lovely, the style is very cool, modern, comfortable. There's a lot of open space and it feels very roomy and clean and open. The shop is very inclusive for people of all identities and walks of life, and it's just frickin cool in there! Really nice staff, really nice shampoo, really nice haircut, really reasonable prices. Yeah and the free therapy session with your haircut is top notch. :P I know hair is very important to people, it is to me too, but I wouldn't hesitate to put my hair in the hands of Carly, or anyone she works alongside. I was all excited to find a new salon. After my last one closed down, this was the first one that appeared to be a safe space so I went ahead and booked an appointment. on my drive there there was a car crash in front of me and so I was 10 minutes late and they canceled my appointment and charged me the fee of it. Beware of strict late policy, I even called in right as I arrived because they told me that my appointment was canceled and I told them that I was half a mile away and I could be there in two minutes and they still said no. Luminary is a gem, and if you haven't been you must go! All of the stylists are incredibly talented. You can be confident whoever you book with can do it all. I've gone several times for blow outs and they transform my otherwise super fine, limp hair. My husband goes for cuts with Blake, who's so good my husband won't go anywhere else (he previously would just go as a walk-in to whatever random salons, but no more). Finding a hair salon for me is a big deal not because of hair coloring or cuts, but for experience. Before moving to RVA 3 years ago I had only gone to one hair salon, privately owned by the one stylist. The stylist increasingly made me more uncomfortable and at one point it felt like verbal abuse with her criticizing my political views and future career. Needless to say I was traumatized, because that person has your hair and your identity in their hands. I tried one other salon before finding Luminary. This space is safe and so beyond welcoming. If you've ever had a bad experience anywhere else, you can find refuge in Luminary. Every single human working there is incredible. I've even booked them for my wedding and I'm so happy that I will get to share that day with people I trust and know. I was scheduled for a follow up appointment in MAY from my appointment in Feb. I was never reminded of my appointment like they claim. They claim they sent the reminder on their end, but I never received. I was charged $127!!!! for not attending an appointment that I made in Feb and was not reminded of. My doctor's office does a better job of reminding me of an appointment, and they would never charge such an extreme fee for a missed appointment. Luminary has definitely lost a consistent client as they were not understanding of the situation whatsoever. Horrible customer service. I do not recommend. read more

I have had the privilege to be a client of Blake for about 4 years now. I have followed him all the way from the Nesbit days. As a person with thick wavy/curly hair, I never was pleased after a haircut. That is until I sat in Blake's chair. I have never once received a bad cut. I would never let anyone else cut my hair now. I am so sad and disappointed to write this review as I'd been super excited for today's appointment. That said, my experience was surprising enough (in a bad way) that I felt like others needed fair warning on the possibility of this occurring. Luminary recently added nail services which I was looking forward to because (1) I live in CH and love supporting local businesses and (2) I'd gone to Audra when she was at a different salon and really liked her. So much so, I made an appointment via their online scheduling service more than 6 weeks in advance. Imagine my surprise when I got an email and a voicemail at 10AM this morning saying they had to cancel my appointment because Audra wasn't accepting new clients and somehow I must have accidentally gotten through the system. Wait, what?!? I called back immediately and said that was unacceptable - it was not my fault that the system "didn't work" or that they didn't physically look at the book until hours before my appointment. At this point, their lack of attention to detail had put me in the position of having no option to make other arrangements. I suggested that since this was their internal issue, they should do the right thing and honor my appointment today (which was at 2:30). While they agreed to honor today, I find it disappointing that I even had to ask. This should have been an in person conversation and frankly if they were going to bring nail services to the salon but not accept new clients (I was told they had to have room for her existing clients), then why advertise it in the first place? In any case, what started as an appointment I was really looking forward to became a huge disappointment. I have been coming to Luminary since they opened in Churchill. The staff is professional and welcoming to people from all walks of life. I generally get my haircut by the owner Mrs. Carly Moenich.
