I've been going to see Jessica Johnson for more than 10 years at two salons, Immortal Beloved RVA and Imago Salon. She did a great job cutting my long, thick curly cut hair. I love the vibe and the art at Immortal Beloved RVA. It's always been top-notch until recently. Now, when I've gone in, they have a dog at the shampoo bowl and that's happened a couple of times. I asked them to not schedule me with the dog, since I'm allergic. I thought it was one of the customers therapy dogs at first. Now, I'm starting to think maybe it was one of the owners. That wouldn't be so bad if I was able to continue with the appointment that I scheduled. I tried to reschedule it because my car was in the shop and wasn't ready yet. I called on a Monday thinking that would be fine and just reschedule. Unfortunately, they weren't open on Monday I found out. I was still getting a text saying that I had an appointment Tuesday. So, I was able to borrow my husband's car. So,I called before I drove down there since I wasn't sure whether my appointment was canceled or not to double check since no one had called me back. Then, the front desk girl said that she had canceled it and we rescheduled it with her for another day. So, I said that was fine, even though a lot of my time was wasted. I didn't even get to go pick up my car because we're spending so much time going back-and-forth with the front desk girl about appointments that day. By the time I got off the phone with her, the car dealership was closed. So now I didn't have my haircut or my car. That sucked. Not very good customers service. At least if we could have rescheduled that would be better than nothing. so we rescheduled for May. Unfortunately, a couple days later I got a call saying that my appointment was canceled and to never come back. They said I was a chronic rescheduler and they're canceling appointments with me. I only scheduled about two appointments a year. I don't even remember them ever talking to me about that before. The lady at the front desk insisted that was their policy. I couldn't find that anywhere on the website. I don't know why we couldn't go forward with the appointment after knowing that in the future but they just canceled it completely at that point and they haven't returned any of my calls or texts. Even when I said I could come in using my husband's car at the time. They said it was too late. It's just ridiculous! I planned for all situations. I feel like I did everything I could. It's frustrating because I don't think that everything was given to Jessica. I never talked to her directly. It was only to the front desk. Clearly she wasn't giving them all the information. So, it was just really frustrating. I've been a long time client and to lose that was awful. She was my friend and I didn't even get to say goodbye to her. Then the head of the company never called me back either. So, they just blacklisted me with no recourse and no phone calls or anything. I called back and nobody returned my calls. Jessica was amazing. I'd found her & immortal beloved via a google search. I then stalked Instagram for some real examples of curly cuts & loved Jessica work. So I easily booked an appointment by calling! First kudos, I was able to book something 3 days later. The salon itself is huge, and the decor is so welcoming! As far as precautions, all staff and clients are wearing masks, there's plenty sanitize available, and I saw someone cleaning while I was there. Before getting started Jessica asked what I was looking for and examined my hair. Then we got to work. After the first pass of cuts I could tell the difference & was already satisfied. We did the bulk of cutting and shaping dry before going for a wash & condition. All the time Jessica & I were chatting about everything under the sun, she's a sweetheart! She took her time during the conditioning phase and gave me so many tips to love my curls at home. I ended up getting more cut than I thought I would, because it looked so good! Loved my experience here from start to finish! I was immediately greeted when I walked in, when she went to get my stylist..someone else took her place so she also greeted me and made sure I was taken care of. The place is huge, great style without being stuffy. Cool, relaxing vibes. My stylist, Lauren made the appointment so enjoyable not only by her great personality, but how well she took care of me, informed me of everything she was doing after we collaborated, and the final product with the cut and style. I am in love with my new haircut, and I can honestly say it's the best one I've ever gotten. Lauren was able to correct the thinning that was done at my last haircut (different salon). She also cut it in a way that it would work with when I wore it straight or naturally curly. The layers flow together so well, and it has great movement now. This was my first time at this salon, but it won't be my last. I live in Fredericksburg, but it will be worth the drive to come to Richmond for my hair appointments. I can tell from the way Lauren was, how she spoke about the salon, and what I observed that the culture there is one where they strive for a high standard in service to their clients, delivering great execution in everything they do, while also sharing with their clients great tips in caring for their new cut and style. read more

I have been living in RVA for two years and haven't been able to find anyone who could cut my hair without butchering it (I tried four different people), so much so that I would only get my hair cut when I was back home in Philly. Recently, someone recommended that I go to Elise here, so I decided to try someone new for a fifth time. I am so glad I did. I have a curly pixie cut, which can be incredibly difficult to cut, but I knew immediately I made a good choice when Elise said she was excited to cut my hair. I wanted a refresh on my hair before starting a new job and my home stylist wasn't available. I happened to be visiting Richmond for the day and got an appointment here. I know the DC location is pretty trendy so I was excited to see what the Richmond location had in store. The salon itself is the most aesthetic salon I've ever seen, super open and modern with greenery! I loved just being there. I got my hair glazed and cut by Nikki and I loved her so much! She was so sweet and complimented my hair throughout our whole session (flattery will get you everywhere with me...haha). I'm always super nervous whenever I get my hair done by a new person due to bad past experiences, but Nikki put me at ease. I was a little nervous that on the stylist's instagrams, there wasn't many pictures of Asian hair. She did an amazing job and gave my brassy hair a much-needed glossy dark brown glaze! She also didn't trim off too much which I really appreciated. An aesthetically beautiful salon with rude employees that are highly incompetent and unable to work with people of color Where do I start with this salon? I went to Britny for highlights the first time and it was fine. I used a little bit of organic coconut oil the night before and... The color came out nice and ashy, but it could have been better (for $450). Was not happy with the streaky and fake look, but I was very happy with the shade and my hair was mostly healthy (despite extreme dryness). I did not complain. She had another stylist helping her (named Linda) who was friendly and professional. I didn't mind because she really seemed like she knew what she was doing and they were working together. The second time I visited Immortal Beloved was a couple of months later. The experience I had this time around was wholly different (like night and day). I went back for more highlights, going for a more natural look. Britny and I discussed coconut oil and if it is useful for obtaining healthy hair or just a fad.... well, she was in the middle of telling me that it's a fad while she started to become nervous and call other girls over to access my hair. She started to say that it is processing way too fast and when I asked why she replied "the coconut oil is making your hair process faster and its turning orange." I was confused because I had used coconut oil when I went to her in January for the first round of highlights as well. Anyway, she continued to foil my hair and a few minutes later I felt my scalp heating up ad burning... so I told her and she goes "is it painful or just a light burn, because some heat is normal." I said "not necessarily painful but not comfortable either." Soon after, she was rushing me to the bowl to wash my hair out, and suggested that she bleach a few more pieces in the front to "even it out"...by this time, I had lost track of how many girls were working on my hair (2 blondes, one brunette... none of whom knew how to detangle or even shampoo biracial hair). The top of my hair came out reddish brown, so I asked for another toning. The blonde girl told me it needed to process for 13 minutes, but she left me sitting over the sink for nearly 30 minutes. This time, my roots over processed and were almost pitch black. One of her "assistants" kept saying "I need to go mix more toner" Why would her unlicensed assistants be mixing her chemicals for her. Oh, she claimed they are "highly trained and do not make mistakes" I had previously agreed to do a natural style after coloring to reduce breakage. They called it "a roller set." It was definitely not a set and no rollers were involved. One of the girls in her army of untrained assistants came and brushed through my hair as if she were scared of it. Then she slapped a bunch of random chemicals in it (not truss- the only brand britny claimed she used on my hair). My hair felt brittle and sad, then she proceeded to tell me to sit under this super hot dryer for 30 minutes. Midway though I was looking like an ad for soul glow (but without the moisture of healthy look). At this point I changed my mind, and asked for a blowout. "Nobody here has time to do a blowout, but you can come back at 2:30 and ___will do it! He is great." I am a full time student and had only come to town for long enough to get my hair done. By that time, I was very upset and I started crying because Britny did not care about me being unhappy with my hair, she never came over to check how it turned out or to ask me if im ok. Not once. I didn't see her face after this was all done. The manager just came out and kept taking messages to and from her to me. The manager agreed to come outside with me and take pictures of my now red tinted hair. I still have the pictures. After seeing them, I told her I did not feel comfortable paying 450 for that service and she continued to argue that I am also paying for everyone's time. I then informed her I was not ok with 5 or more people working on my hair, and im sure someone mixed the chemicals wrong. She insisted that nobody made any mistakes and that it was my hair having a chemical response to COCONUT OIL. For those that don't know, millions of hair stylists swear by using coconut oil before color processing and I spoke to multiple stylists that agreed with me. Long story short, I left without paying. The manager told me that I would now be blacklisted from the salon until I pay. The next day I decided to call and pay $250 (price agreed upon by manager) because I wanted my hair to be corrected. A week later and Britny still would not speak to me, but was sending messages saying she would do my hair soon. Every time I tried to schedule an appointment they said "we need to just talk to britny first." Which was confusing because they had her schedule. A few hours after my last conversation with the manager, Britny messaged me on Facebook insulting me and telling me to find another stylist. Well, thank God I have. Add pics l8r read more

Called Immortal Beloved on a whim to see if they had an opening for the next night and they set me up with an appointment with Nikki. She is seriously the best! I drove all the way from Northern VA to Immortal Beloved in Richmond to get my hair color and balayage done by a relatively new colorist by the name of DREW. He came highly recommended. He is a nice guy, personable and fun. I must say, despite our age difference he was so easy to talk to. Drew did a great job coloring and doing Balayage on my 73 year old locks. I have to preface this with saying I'm so happy with the job Richard Riffe has done with my hair, for years, that I had to follow him all the way from Northern Virginia to get a solid cut. I came here for a full balayage and haircut after my sister (who goes to the DC location) recommended it to me. I was absolutely stunned at how amazing my results were. The color was perfectly faded from dirty blonde roots to ashy blonde tips, and with proper care I have maintained a great color still! The cut was also perfectly flattering and simple, it felt natural and easy to manage which is exactly what I need as someone who works and goes to school. All I can say is WOW. This place is stunning! It's like nothing I have ever seen in RVA. Right now, the hair stylists and colorists are working out of the barber area but there's more to come because they are also opening up a huge, open and beautiful salon space in the near future. The space is so lovely, clean, light and welcoming. I was greeted immediately by the reception staff, checked in and asked if I wanted anything to drink while I waited. The waiting area is dimly lit with outrageously comfy seating. I was quickly greeted by my girl, Elise Troxell and the fun began! Elise is so fantastically talented, she always makes me feel so beautiful and is just as excited as I am about my ideas and hair makeover. I love her because she always knows exactly what I want without me having to say anything- she always has the perfect suggestions to fit my personal style and maintenance routine. Curly-haired ladies new to RVA -- this is your new salon. Having just moved here from Washington DC (and finally accepting that I can't go home every time I need my hair done) I was looking for a new stylist. I've been wearing my hair straight for most of my life, booking biweekly blowouts, buying smoothing hair products, and being basically married to my flat iron in an effort to mask my super fine, super curly, frizz-prone locks. Looking at my split ends under the fluorescent lights at work, I realized that I've been damaging my hair for so long, and decided enough was enough. I'm never going to have silky, pantene-commercial-esque waves, why not embrace my natural texture finally? I did my research and all signs pointed to Jessica at Immortal Beloved. She was described as the "curl master". I called to make an appointment (they don't do online booking) and the receptionist was so sweet! She quelled my pre-haircut jitters and was even able to get me an appointment with Jessica for the following day. I arrived a little early to the salon. It's so beautiful! The dark, sultry colors and leather/animal hide accents were perfectly balanced with gorgeous natural light from large windows, and plants. Everywhere. The receptionist checked me in and offered me water, coffee, or tea (always a nice touch) and came right back with a steaming cup of mint tea. I waited in one of two seating areas for Jess, who introduced herself and took me over to the chair. Jessica seems really genuine and kind. She listened to my hair history without judgment (even though I've been a bad curl owner), pointed out areas that needed the most love, and told me exactly what the plan was. Honestly, the moment I saw her crazy beautiful mane of red curls, I knew I was in the hands of someone who understood my hair type. She then cut my hair dry as it was. Afterwards, she shampooed me (and gave me the best head massage ever) and talked me through the products she was using and why, and gave me some recommendations for taking care of my hair at home. She scrunched some product into my hair and put me under the dryer. After I was set and dried, she made some more shaping snips and scrunched some more. Overall I think I was in the salon for an hour and a half. Guys. I had no idea my curls could look this good. She took off a lot of damage but left some length so that it's not a huge change. My definition is amazing and I don't have the triangle hair shape that we all know and love (not). My hair is soft and shiny and bouncy. I just feel so much lighter overall! Jess recommended some products to me but didn't hard sell me on anything which was nice. Overall, I'm super happy with my hair and will be singing the praises of Jessica and Immortal Beloved to everyone I know (curly or not). read more
