The dim sum here is decent, a little on the small side but a good value for the inexpensive price. Despite what the other reviews say, I found the dim sum to be pretty good. They have the basics - ha gow, siu mai, chicken feet, spareribs in black bean sauce, tofu skin rolls, etc. I was pleased to find that they still have the "shark fin" dim sum which is hard to find at other places. My favorite is the large combination bao, which is an extra large bao filled with a combination of lop cheung, hard boiled egg, a dollop of either pork or chicken, and a shiitake mushroom. Was craving for dim sum. They have all the usual offerings but it wasn't quite there. The shrimp dumplings are in the smaller side and is missing the crush of the bamboo shoots. The phoenix claw aka chicken feet was tender but the flavor was off, not spoiled but it just wasn't right. Also tried the steam pork buns and I'm not a fan. They accept credit cards but there's a small percentage charge to help cover their fees. I ordered the siu mai (4 steamed pork dumplings), har gow (4 steamed shrimp dumplings), tofu skin rolls (3 rolls filled with water chestnuts, woodear mushrooms and minced pork), and 1 ham sui gok (deep fried mochi dumpling filled with minced meat). Not bad for a quick and fast pickup at the counter. Street parking in this area is challenging since it's Chinatown, but you can be in and out for takeout orders. My favorite place to grab man tao and Malaysian cake. I highly recommend as they are not too sweet and is very reminiscent of your mom making pastries at home. They are super affordable and have tables inside for you to eat your dim sum or baos. I typically grab to go but their spare ribs rice or meat cake rice is also very tasty and something Chinese people love eating. The service is quick and the ladies working are very sweet. My favorite item here is their combination steamed bun, aka the dai gai bao (big chicken bun). The dough of their steamed bun is just the right texture. It's not too dry, and it's not too moist. The filling of their bao includes large chunks of chicken, hard boiled egg, Chinese sausage, and black mushroom. Located in one of the side streets next to the Asian Cultural Center in Oakland Chinatown, Yummy Dim Sum isn't a place that people will regularly wander into on a whim. From the outside, it's actually not terribly easy to tell there's a dim sum place here as it has an unappealing sign, and when you get inside, it's the same as well, but coming to Yummy Dim Sum will be for a very different experience than if you were to go to Peony Seafood Restaurant just a short walk over. What Yummy Dim Sum does offer though, is cheap and affordable dim sum, to-go (no sitting in at the moment). When you first walk in, there's just a couple of large menu boards on the left, and the counter to order is on the right. The staff here is going to be hit or miss, as this was literally the experience of one staff was friendly, the other one didn't really care about anything than getting us out the door. But considering it's a takeout only place, I guess service isn't really much of an expectation to begin with. First, let's talk about the price just to get that out of the way. They are probably the cheapest place that offers dim sum in this area out of all the places. Back in the day, there had been several dim sum places, and you had more options for an actual dim sum restaurant to eat out. Nowadays, there's really just one main dim sum place in this immediate area, and that is Peony. There's a wide variety of other restaurants though that will also offer dim sum, and other takeout only dim sum places too but at a much higher price. Yummy Dim Sum will off you the best bang for your buck if you just want dim sum. Food wise, because of how cheap it is, you get what you pay for. While it's not bad when taking into account how much you're paying, it's certainly not going to blow you away by any means. The portions are small, but not so small that it's no good, but also more like a taste of dim sum, rather than a meal of it. Again, price to portion, it's about what you would expect. Their ha gao is pretty good, their shu mai is not bad and actually has shrimp and not just pork, their shrimp roll is okay, and their pastries were pretty good. The baos here were hit and missing with the chasu bao and the chicken bao, but not too bad. They charge you on the pastries stuff per piece, while most of the other dim sum dishes are done in a tiny batch, like 3 pieces, but if you take into account the per cost, it's the same thing really. All in all, Yummy Dim Sum is a great place for those who are just looking for a cheaper option, eating food that's not bad and in some places pretty good, and want takeout. Naming themselves Yummy Dim Sum was certainly overreaching in the first place, so there was no chance they would meet that standard. However, I would still be comfortable calling them, Yummy Enough Dim Sum, which looking at this case I am all for. Pop on in if you're interested in some takeout dim sum without having to pay much more at almost every other place around in the area, at least nowadays. read more

Considering rising crime rates, asian hate, and the pandemic, this place raising their dim sum prices $1.25 dollar is no big deal among a trend of restaurants closing in chinatown. Their dim sum is very small. A few of the wrapped dim sum tasted sour, and even bitter; maybe it's not fresh? I don't recommend the rice-wrapped dumplings and rolls, definitely not the shrimp dumplings. The siu mai and shark fin dumplings were okay-ish. I do recommend trying the bamboo roll. Their $5 sweet rice chicken was incredibly mediocre, however it tasted like it was supposed to. Staff is reasonably friendly; albeit sullen. At the time, they only have take-out. Bag fee is 20 cents. I'm giving Yummy Dim Sum another try on a Sunday. I ordered Har Gow, Shu Mai, and Pork Spareribs. The pork and shrimp dumplings were okay. I found a piece of hard to chew pork tendon in the Shu Mai. The pork spareribs are a small serving. And they add chunks of taro that's the same color as the pork. Oh well, now I know why there's a big line at Ming's Tasty....1/2 a block away. read more

Sought out delicious dim sum takeout for Yelp's #LocalAdventureChallenge (https://bit.ly/EastBayLocalAdventureChallenge) and sadly Tao Yen and Sum Yee were both closed on Sunday (though both are listed as open all weekend). Despite the negative reviews on Yelp, I decided to give Yummy Dim Sum a chance hoping that they'd pleasantly surprise me. Unfortunately this is about a 2.5 dim sum experience, with their affordable prices being the most positive thing here (most items are $2.75). I guess this was a true case of, "you get what you pay for". I'm happy to report that none of the items made me feel sick, but having eaten dim sum my whole life, I could tell the quality just wasn't there. Nothing tasted particularly fresh, the beef balls were too soft and a little soggy, the short ribs lacked meat, and the siu mai and har gow were super small and tasted a little off. And my favorite item, the beef rice noodle rolls, barely had any beef in them. I might go back if I'm desperate for a cheap dim sum fix, but would definitely go elsewhere if other options were available. Note that the ordering process I went through was simply walking in and pointing to the menu and listing off items to one of the staff members. At first a little kid came and sat st my booth. I thought, hmmm, that's weird. Maybe this place has shared seating? Then the kid left. I was craving some dim sum and I'm so glad I stepped into this place. They had my favorite: pi dan zhou (thousand year old egg porridge / congee)!!! The porridge was thick, extremely flavorful, and some of the best porridge I've ever had. The shau mai were not bad. I went to a different dim sum place when i visited half a year later (yeah this review is super late) and I regret not coming here. My only qualm is that it probably tastes so good because theres a heck ton of salt in it... but it's worth it. This is my go-to place for cha siu baos. I always get the same three baos: - baked cha siu bao -- $1 - steamed cha siu bao -- $0.75 - steamed chicken + veggie bao -- $0.75 The baked cha siu bao is my favorite because of the sweet buttery glaze on top. I'm also a sucker for their fatty cha siu filling. I recommend coming early in the morning for the baked cha siu baos because they only make it once a day and they're best enjoyed when fresh. They don't keep them in anything warm so once it's cold, it's not as good until you reheat it yourself. They also run out towards lunch time. The steamed baos are keep in a steamer so they're warm when you buy them. I usually get more than enough of these so I can keep them in the freezer and microwave for 20 seconds whenever I'm craving them. I usually eat around 3-4 steamed baos in order to be full but for 75 cents each, this is a very affordable lunch option. read more

The Sharksfin dumpling was so so. The filling was tasty, but the wonton wrap was a bit thick and dry. Mind you, I ate it cold since I bought ut in the morning and ate them 4hrs later. I have yet to try their other dim sum. I plan to try every variety that they have. I don't recommend their rice cake. The taste was ok, but it the ones I got were a bit dry. I tried their rice topping with spareribs and chicken feet. I couldn't believe that I could still get a full meal at $2.80 until I tried it myself. They're open pretty early. Yummy Dimsum is one of the few spots in Oakland Chinatown open for pickup dimsum during COVID-19. They have a limited selection of items but everything is reasonably priced. Their food are average in taste but extremely small in portions. Some of the more popular items like siu-mai and shrimp dumpling are the size of a nickel. Especially with inflation, they keep their prices very affordable and I can buy an entire meal for my family of 4 for $20 or less depending on what I get. Their service is also amazing. Considering this is a chinese dim sum place, their english is very advanced. The ambiance is also very nice. The place is authentic to chinese culture and many chinese foods that are not offered elsewhere. They have authentic foods I have only ever tried on vacation and it taste amazing. Solid 3.5 STARS. This is not your ordinary dim sum store with cart pushers, fancy restaurant decor, and walking waiters. It is more like a fast food dim sum store. You read the menu off the wall or on a small sheet of paper tapped to the front of the ordering line and they either bag the dim sum to go or put it on a carrying tray for you to bring to your table. It has a hole in the wall feel, with a lot more space. Whenever we come my husband orders because his Chinese is way better than mine and their English is limited. Their dim sum is either displayed for you or located in these giant bamboo steamers that keeps the food nice and warm. Price point is very good it is way cheaper then the sit down places in Chinatown. However, you get what you pay for and as long as you have that in mind you will not be disappointed. Though their Baos are really moist with good texture and flavor and is SUPER cheap. Most of their items are either $2.30 or $3.00 which again is super cheap! We have tried the Sui Mai, shrimp rice noodle, beef rice noodle, fresh bamboo roll, spareribs, and the sticky rice wrapped in leaves, and Baos. My kids love the steamed char siu bows and this place delivers! Their bow is fully enclosed on the top (not twisted or knotted) so the moisture doesn't escape when you microwave it later. got a recommendation to come here because of the fast service and cafe style dim sum. Nothing worse than standing in long lines for dim sum on an empty stomach. This place had no wait and an abundance of dim sum pretty good flavors. But, cold inside and limited service. nothing worse than eating in a cold restaurant. Food was ok but also needed some hot sauce and good soy sauce. points for having fresh dim sum but def needs a couple tweaks. Th taste of Yummy dim sum brings back a lot of childhood memories. Each dish I ordered was delicious and was a pretty big portion! You got to try the chashu bao.
