Why does it take hours to pick up a small shipment from the dock? I went around 11am to pick up a single box from the dock and had to wait in a line of trucks for nearly two hours just to pick it up. Trying to ship a car to Big Island Ordered a flat rack 1 month prior to shipping car drop off time was 9am. Its noon and they dont have a flat rack available. Older guy working in office is not very helpful or personable at all. Waiting 3 hours for the flat rack at 11 they said oh they bringing one now before they go to lunch. 1 hour later still nothing....ask the guy he says they havent even started unloading the racks from another boat. I shipped a car to a neighbor island. They ran out of room and had to leave my car in Honolulu for an entire week before shipping it out. At least they were nice enough to call me first thing in the morning to tell me. When I called the next week to check if my car made it on the barge, Joyce told me "we don't track autos". ??!?!? I politely stated that last week, I received a call that my car did not make it on the barge but that I could call this number for follow up. She then put me on hold for a while and came back to report "there was no short ship". She was rather ticked at me when I asked for an explanation of this, but hey.... I have never heard this expression before. So much for customer service. Good news: My car did arrive later that day! Thank goodness. read more

The fact that everybody was nice does not make up for the fact that we had to wait for over an hour to pick up our boxes. Although it really seems like it's just a question of putting more employees down by the containers, maybe it's more complicated than that. Still, it was frustrating and I know it's not unusual. They deserve to go out of bussiness maybe there entire staff might change for the better the state should take this bussiness over and fire everybody also if u want to ship your car to the neghibor island your better off shipping it to California and shipping it back on the same boat to the neghibor island that's how long there appointments a month long wait. And if u mess up in anyways the day of your shipping they will make stuff up to not want your bussiness I accidently forgot to burn off the gas tank I had half a tank I burned most of it off to make it to 1/4 and still couldn't get it on the same boat appointment yea screw young brothers. Okay so here's my explanation for this rating. Recently I shipped a truck I just bought (used but in great condition). The woman had me sign the Vehicle Exception Survey before she inspected the vehicle. Which is how they do it every time (sign before you inspect? that way you can't say "wait, there are no scratches here, like you say.") First of all her handwriting is close to illegible. So I can't read some of the 'damages' my vehicle is claimed to have. The truck I shipped is lifted 10 inches. It has 33' tires and the reason I mention this is point out that it's bumper is far off the ground, so when they say that there is dirt and mud covering the damages (on the bumper) I have to question them entirely...my bumper is more than two feet off the ground. How does mud and dirt so thick, get that high up that you can't see the damages they say to be pre-existing. When I picked up the vehicle I noticed right away that the bumper was hit and the thick paint on it was no longer present down to bare metal that area is 2" x 1". I also noticed the valance or skirt under the bumper was hanging off and distorted or dented. I needed to secure it with zip ties and screws. When I told the customer service representative he denied it and said my Vehicle Exception Survey said the entire front bumper was "chafed and scratched all over" "scraped" and "dust and mud covered unable to determine other defects if any". The codes for these on the survey are CSA, SC, and DMC respectively. (I will upload the picture showing that they did this to my ENITRE vehicle.) I told him that was bull and it was obvious someone hit the right front bumper and valance. The rest of the bumper was fine. I did everything I needed to do for the claim turned it in and I was denied. They said it was pre-existing. I think that if you ever need to ship a vehicle go with PASHA. How can Young Brothers get away with just saying that my car, which is so high off the ground mud doesn't get in front of the bumper...is, "covered in mud and dirt" so that they can't see damages...that seems like just something to say so that they can cover their asses if something happens. Which is exactly what is happening to me. So now I have to dish out close to $1,000 to pay for damages that their insurance should be paying for. If you value your car...don't use this company. Or at least make sure you have full coverage insurance so you can go through your own insurance company which they did try and ask me to do! What a trip. read more

I sent a small vehicle to Hilo. Booking a reservation was like pulling teeth. First I tried calling, only to be placed on hold for 25 minutes. I don't know if someone was trying to answer my call or if it was the system kicking me off, but the call was abruptly disconnected and so I called again. This time I tried the option of leaving my phone number to receive a call back -- what a joke. No return call was ever received. I was talking with a friend and he suggested booking via e-mail. I sent an e-mail with my reservation request. I received a response a day and a half later asking me to fill in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet "form" with all of my information and advising that a Sept 11 sailing was available. I don't have MS Excel so I couldn't save the file with my information. Instead, I wrote back an e-mail with all of my pertinent information -- no response. Finally, after a few days went by I resorted to calling yet again. After being on-hold for 20 minutes my call was finally answered only to be told that Sept 11 was no longer available and that I would have to book Sept 14. Whatever, book it. Tropical Storm Olivia comes through the islands around my booking and I am sent another e-mail telling me that my reservation has been re-booked to Sept 25 (the Sept 15 sailing was canceled). Don't expect warm and friendly service from their employees at check-in. The signs around the harbor for check-in are confusing and after you've gone through the process you'll realize that they are not exactly correct. Hopefully, you can find your way through the process without losing your patience. Be sure to have your information and documents in order. The woman working inside of the office at check-in was talking down to a customer like he was a child and sent him away because he didn't have the proper paperwork. Customer service is virtually absent. It's a shame that this company is the only show in town when it comes to shipping interisland. The booking "system" is grossly antiquated and it doesn't seem they are seriously invested in improving the process as there probably isn't any need for it! I've been shipping my products to the outer islands for 30 years via Young Brothers. Occasionally when I'm outer island I have to ship them back. It's never fun waiting in line but you just have to deal with it and try to get here early. Last week I got to pier 38 at 10am and ended up in the longest line I've seen to date. I was in front of the shipping and receiving office out front. I thought, "my bad for coming later than usual", and proceeded to wait it out. I finally made it to the front of the line just before 12 and one of the two ladies jumps on her golf cart and leaves. The 2nd lady is just standing there watching a single guy unload and entire flatbed of "pay for" washers and dryers which takes him 30 to 45 minutes. He finishes at 12:05 and guess what? She jumps into a golf cart and speeds away! In the past someone took their lunch while the other person kept working and once they got back the 2nd person would go to lunch. It was slower but the line still progressed. This time there was nobody except forklift drivers and car shuttlers going about their business for an hour. At 1pm they finally come back and I unload in 10 minutes and get the hell out of there. I complained to the clerk who pointed me to my container and she said it's a new policy and they don't think it works but they have no say in the matter. Then today I get there at 7:45am only to find they are closed on Mondays and Thursdays! How the hell can you run a company with such idiotic policies and hours! I've been doing this for 3 decades and I've seen it through good times and bad times but now it's the worst I've ever seen it. Someone high up in their administration needs to be moved to another department where it doesn't affect the customers ability to do their jobs. I work my ass off to keep my business afloat and I depend on Young Brothers doing their job so I can keep operating. It's already hard enough to do business in Hawaii, so why are they now making it harder than ever? read more

The workers were very lazy and not very helpful. The worker at the front gate had major attitude when I need help. DO NOT ship with Young Brothers!! What makes this worse is items from my vehicle were STOLEN when shipped. Do not trust them to handle your property with care. I am very disappointing with their services. UPDATE** I have just spoken to young brothers about the stolen items from my vehicle. The representative seemed to not care, and brushed it off like it happens all the time. I've shipped many things and picked up many things from Young Brothers many times, mostly for work related stuff. It was good that I got that experience because doing it personally for family and friends is a breeze since I know the whole process. The staff and customer service is good. Sometimes it's a hit or miss when shipping things depending on the busyness. When there's choke people the process can be very grueling, having to wait, having to do paperwork, and more waiting around before you finally are able to load up the container. When it is not busy then everything goes super smooth and your out of there in less than half an hour. The prices are decent for the services that you get out of them. They are one of the more whole known inter-island shipping companies in the state. You can ship a lot of big items and vehicles with these guys. To make things easier when bringing things over, it's better if you are all organized like having paperwork ready so that you can automatically load your stuff into the container. read more

July 22, 2017: Called YB to inquire about shipping car from Honolulu to Kahului August 10, I was told to just bring it in on the sail day with car's documents before 11:30 am. I call back one week prior to double check, they tell me I need to fill out the Bill of Laden. August 3: I go down to YB office to get the BOL and then told I cannot ship on my planned date because they always over book. Next available date is now almost 3 weeks out. So two things happened, I found out I needed to fill out the BOL and make a reservation. My plans are now messed up. I have to fly back to put the car on YB. August 28, 2017: I called this morning to confirm my reservation and received a time to bring the car in by 8:30 am. I asked if my time can be moved back an hour or 2 and got since I didn't know I was supposed to bring the car in by 8:30 am. I got put on hold because they have to check if they can actually do it. I been on hold for 11 minutes. Wait time has expired. Wait time was 12 minutes August 28, 2017: Call back, inquired with Joyce to change me drop off time got transferred to reservation, on hold again. I called back to confirm with Joyce my reservation and time is still on time. Response was "oh you called earlier yeah?" she confirmed my date and time to drop off vehicle is good. I'm flying back tonight to make sure my car can be ready for 8:30 am tomorrow. I hate this crap of misinformation and information withheld by this company's incompetent staff. Yeah I know it's on the website genius, but the staff don't what's on there. They could have said, hey we do have instructions on our website or please visit our office to receive a BOL which is required to ship your vehicle and at the time of your visit we can make a reservation for you. If that was told me to me on the first phone call, I would have been good to go. The last time I shipped a car from HNL to Hilo was in 1987. This company needs refresher some customer service training. This company sucks. read more

Waiting over a month now for the second bc they keep telling us it arrived at their port a week prior but then somehow mysteriously missed the ship for delivery to our island. Twice. read more

If you would like to ship all of your worldly goods and family keepsakes in a container that has a leaky roof then Young Brothers is for you.. I was told after the fact they are inspected every 2 months or so and it was my responsibility to inspect it. We had to completely unload our container in the rain to save our possessions, rent from another company, and sleep on the floor for 3 nights because we then missed our shipping date and already had our airline tickets booked, and had no furniture. bring a cooler and food i went to ship a car. i had a appointment for 930 am. i was there at 800 they had only 1 person working in office. when i went in he highlighted my name to show i was there waiting on the clipboard for reservations list. room fills up with more than 16-20 people and everyone waiting there turn. then some people come in and get served right off when others waiting hours.then he puts clip board up on a shelf and leaves.now a lady comes in she says she never even worked this dept she asked whos next ?we say its on the res clip board.she cant find it so i tell her he put it up on the shelf. now more people waiting outside to. we call the office they send a manager and some one to stand at door to watch the unhappy crowd. he asked what is the problem and the lady says i was unhappy about service. i was vocal about it so were others. he says he cannot help its not his job and goes back outside and sits on a golf cart watching from about 11:30 -2:00. more people leave than are waiting now. about 1:00 2 more people show up and get things going. i finally ask why im not called yet and the lady asked my name i tell her. she says im not on the list. so i show her my name 2 pages back from where she was and she says but why is it highlighted. i said the previous guy did that to tell who was here and waiting already. i got to walk out about 3:30-4:00 and took a cab home after telling 3 different people not to pick me up. being this was a all day event i got to meet some very nice people while waiting. the guy next to me had 2 cars to ship with appointments but could only get 1 done. other people said it was like this all week they had more than 1 car or roro stuff and had to keep coming back. only 1 person running the show most of day until the end . i dont blame the staff this is management/co with no reguard to customers because of shipping monopoly. lets hope matson-pasha or whomever get there biz going soon. because whoever else opens a shipping co inter island will have a gold mine. even the dmv has better service and faster turn around than this. read more
