Tried this place for the first time and I'm not coming back. The wait staff didn't get our orders right and constantly asked us what we ordered even though it's written on the piece of paper. Our food took incredibly long with no apology or explanation on why. The rolls were littered with chili and jalapeños and slathered in sauce making the rolls a spicy soggy mess. Jun is a solid sushi artist, a great guy to share a brew with and a great reason to stop in for Yokozuna anytime... I'm a fan of sashimi and creative plates, Jun does a solid job keeping it new...I've never eaten any of the back kitchen food, so I can't comment...but it all looks good. His teriyaki chicken bowl is one of the only ones I've seen my 3 year old devour...so it must be good! Excellent value, fish is always fresh...not sure how anyone can go wrong here. read more

I gotta hand it to 'em. For my first taste if Yokozuma, I tried the yellowtail sushi. Visually - a safe bet. Nothing skin-y or fat-y as the belly cut would have been. Here we had a decently fresh but run-of-the-mill sushi. I like my rice slightly less sweet. Other than that, a head nodding, "pretty decent". Picked the "muy chingon" roll next, thinking I should stay local. It also had no "crab meat" (which I despise ... the meat itself ... not the *not* having it). Overall (for the roll), I'd say, "less cowbell". I rarely say that - mostly because I stay out of situations that would require me to. There was altogether too much sauce and it was too sweet (from both the sauce and the prepared seaweed). Plainer woulda' been nice, and would have allowed me to taste the innocent yellowtail that was tucked under one too many layers of pizzazz. In an effort to redeem the whole experience (despite my misstep on ordering the roll), I ordered the Uni. Yes, another bold-ass (and probably Ill advised) move. Here, the sweeter-than-necessary rice really glared, and the Uni was far gamier than you'd want it to be. Just sayin'. Skip this place. It's a dishonest restaurant. The photos on the menu do NOT actually look like what is delivered to you. My husband ordered a roll with sliced Albacore on top. What came to him was l/3rd slice of albacore on top, when the picture on the menu depicted a generous slice. We should have sent it back. The "sushi chef" forgot to make one of the dishes ordered, and when reminded, continued to make other customers' sushi when he knew we were waiting. Prices are way too high for the quality and quantity of sushi delivered. My husband's ridiculous roll was $14.00!!! We felt taken advantage of. It was our first time here, and it will be our LAST. My friends and I came to this little sushi place after ice skating at the Channel Islands rink. It was around 5, a little early for dinner, so the place was more or less empty. We seated ourselves and a waiter came over with a menu and asked if we wanted drinks immediately. The menu is pretty extensive, with lots of chef's special rolls. I went with a sunset roll, which wasn't a chef special, and kind of regretted it. It was decent, but not spectacular. Worth the $9.95? Not really. The waiter asked if we wanted anything else multiple times, and after finishing my roll (so much smaller than my friends' special rolls), I caved and got a Javi hand roll. Best decision of my life. It's a little cone of seaweed filled with rice, avocado, cucumbers, 1-2 jalepeno slices, and spicy crab. So good. For $5.95? Totally worth it. I can't even put into words. For the spectacular service and the lengthy menu (I'd like to try the other hand rolls, as well as the chirashi bowl and some of the special rolls), I'll definitely be coming back to this place in the future. read more

UPDATE: Back up to a full 4 stars. I was VERY surprised with Yokozuna the last time we went. The food and service were both really really good. I wish I could remember the name of the roll my hubs got - maybe the Katana Roll? It was amazing! I got the Salmon Sashimi and a Spicy Tuna Roll. I know, I know not very adventurous but I think these traditional options really say a lot about a sushi place. Both were very fresh tasting. Dare I say they have new owners since my last review? Jun and his team never let me down. This is the sushi place to be at in Oxnard! Their fish are fresh, the service is always great, and I see a lot of the same faces when I go to eat there- which is 1-2 times a week for lunch. Which tells me they've built relationships with customers and that's why they come back. Not mention the jams are always playing at Yoko. I've been here before for happy hour, and it was pretty good. Tonight I called and asked how late happy hour went and was told 7. When I showed up just before 6, they were crowded presumably for happy hour, there was very little parking. There was 1 gentleman running the whole dining floor, seating people, serving people food and drinks and bussing tables. Not sure if he was a poor employee being taken advantage of or the owner trying to save money by skimping on the number of employees. But he service suffered, one man can only do so much. We asked for the happy hour menu and he told us happy hour was over at 6. Big bummer, their prices are pretty steep they charge almost double for the same rolls after happy hour. No big deal though, I'll just order less, not leave with leftovers and take the opportunity to try something new. I ordered a teriyaki salmon plate and a dynamite Cali roll. My teriyaki salmon came with rice and tempura veggies that were pretty bland without sauce. Of course I couldn't get my waiters attention to ask for some. The dynamite roll was great! Only it was almost double what it costs during happy hour. And it isn't any bigger or different. Like I said if the waiter was some poor guy that got stranded there without help I feel super bad for him. I had a bento box with 3 dishes which were Teriyaki salmon, fried mussels, and roasted fish. The roasted fish was over cooked and dry. The salmon was good and the mussels were OK. I also had a fresh water Eel roll which was $4.50 so it was nothing special but still good. Also had a Scallop roll which was $3.95 so it was nothing special as well. The last piece of sushi i got was a Creamy salmon hand roll which was pretty good for $5.95. Other then that I dont have many complaints. The Rolls from Yokozuna are consistenly well made. Everything from the very spicy Joey and Amigo rolls to the Mas Chignon and Lion King rolls are absolutely delicious. Horrible service! The owner was not there. The server that helped us has been working there for years. Not once have we ever had an issue with this restaurant we always recommend to friends we are regulars and today we got a bad batch of the baked salmon roll and asked if we could get it removed from the tab because the fish tasted bad and the server offered to switch it out but we didn't want it switched. We waited around 10 min to get a to go box for the other meal and got ignored and when other parties came in with more people we didn't get our box or bill. We ended up getting up after we got the hill because no one came to get our payment and we waited again at the front until the cook told the server again to take the payment I mentioned to the server that next time he shouldn't be as rude specially to regulars because we come often and if we come it's because we love the way we are treated. All we asked for was for that roll to be taken off the tab if they would have said no I would have understood as well because it's food and it's a waste but unfortunately his response was "well we've never had anything be return ever" and I started to respond because it wasn't okay. So he walked away and made a comment under his breath and so I came back inside and told him we had never had an issue with this restaurant in the years we've been coming here and his response was "well now you do.
