After a long day on the beach at Oxnard our family stopped by on a Sunday evening for a quick dinner before driving home. The restaurant is seemingly the only survivor left in a strip mall food court, leaving, after sunset, an almost eerie feel with the restaurant taking up one corner of an otherwise empty courtyard. We ordered and our food came quite quickly. We got the Tonkotsu Ramen ($13), which was quite poor; while the proportions were generous the broth was off and the ingredients melded together a bit too much, like a stew kept on for too long. The dinner bento box with teriyaki salmon ($17) was decent though, with great tempura vegetables, excellent fried gyoza, and good, if generic, salmon and spicy tuna maki side. We also got the B.S. II roll (whatever that stands for; $14), a California roll topped with cooked scallops and shrimp and spicy mayo. We've had many variants of this before (my spouse being a cooked sushi fan) and this was fairly mid, as the foodies say these days. A special note should be said for the service; our waitress, while quite busy by the end of the evening, attended to our needs, added on drinks later, and even put on the game at my request. Value, listed above, I found to be quite favorable. The food quality was limited, yet this still made for great budget pick. My expectations weren't high for this Fisherman, but he met them. The steady stream of pickup drivers and other families who came to that empty mall are telling, however. This is a stalwart, stubborn shop in a dying mall - an adequate, budget-friendly sushi place for the people. I can appreciate that. Food: 3.5/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Service: 4.5/5 Value: 5/5

The wooden counter, cute decor and menu make you feel as if you've been transported straight to Japan. Fishermans sushi is a hidden gem known to those who grew up here and to those who stumbled upon it by chance (like me). The last man standing in a ghost town of what I imagine was a once bustling food court. It's a real testament that they've been able to stay open all these years. This restaurant has character that's for sure. Inside are eager chefs and friendly service, even after all these years. The prices are still insanely reasonable too. My friend and I split a sashimi boat for $45. That was six varieties of fresh fish, each with five large slices of sashimi. HOW?! In this economy?! Grateful that they can serve up fresh sushi at such reasonable prices. Their classic rolls and fried appetizers are also fantastic. My friend and I would both highly recommend their shrimp tempura. Fried up fresh, the batter was crispy and delicate. For rolls, go with the Fisherman's house roll as it was garlicky with a good sauce and fresh. We had a really good time here and definitely feel like it's a well kept secret to those who weren't born and raised here as for lunch it was pretty dead inside. Yet a lot of the locals love it and rave about this spot. Definitely worth checking out, we had a good experience and loved the old time vibes of this place.

Everything we tried was good and fresh. The place is not fancy at all. The service was excellent despite the fact that it was pretty busy and one server (Ariana?) handled everything including a stream of Door Hub/Grub dash orders. She was hopping! She warned us that the food could take awhile but it wasn't too long until we were eating. You can't beat cold beer and steaming noodles on a blustery New Year's Eve. We will be back.

I ordered the chashu ramen which did have a generous serving of 5 pieces of pork. But omg they were so TOUGH. It felt like I was chewing forever. I think leaving the pork in the broth longer made them less tough but wow, that was a jaw workout. I was surprised that the ramen didn't come with the usual beansprouts and bamboo shoots but each place is different. I was a little annoyed to pay $2 to add them on additionally but I understand that some people may not like those things in ramen so it is an overall good idea to charge separately. Okay service. My friend and I didn't order any drinks, just had water. But it was a hassle to get a refill. I had asked twice and made multiple attempts to move my empty cup to a more strategic location to signal for water. But eventually my friend just got up and asked for me. I'm all for a fun workplace environment as long as it isnt distracting from actual work responsibilities.

Feels very contemporary and not like a darker wood ambiance of more traditional Japanese sushi places. This place must generate most of their business from their super packed HH. Once 5pm hit, it got noticeably busier, and by 530pm- fully packed. Sumo is maybe one of the few places that allows takeout of their HH items because they know how crowded they get. That is generous of them. I think their prices are among the most affordable for HH sushi around this area and everything was fresh. I am not picky sushi rolls person, but I would guess their sushi quality is average, made for mass consumption and general public, not for people who really want Japan level top grade sushi/ sashimi. Service: it all depends. Most of the servers are college aged young women. So a lot of them huddle and talk during busy HH time while they constantly scan the busy entrance for new diners. It can take awhile for someone to actually come take your order; we were lucky our server was pretty sweet natured. But in general I don't get the vibe that most of the servers are very focused about their jobs. But with busy HH, warm and friendly service isn't a priority. We're here for the HH deals and fresh affordable sushi. For these points, Sumo delivers. The ambiance: modern and bright, not my first choice. I prefer more low key settings. I think if I came to eat solo, eating at the sushi bar would be a pleasant experience, if I came before 5pm rush.

I ordered their seaweed salad and their rose roll. It was okay. Nothing mind blowing, but I did get food poisoning from it. It was the only thing I had ate which is how I know it was from this. I know some of my friends enjoy coming here, but I will not be coming again.

Honestly? Solid, reliable mid-tier mall sushi in a good way. Nothing mind-blowing or destination-worthy, but crispy where it should be crispy, fish was soft and fresh, not overly salty, and service was friendly and efficient. Shoutout to the rice being properly cooked -- sounds like a low bar, but a lot of places miss that, and it makes a difference. Overall: dependable spot when you want satisfying sushi and happy hour deals without overthinking it. Not extraordinary, but reliably good. Price was very reasonable.

My friends ordered off of the Happy Hour menu and were pleased with the Miso Salmon & Tempura. I ordered off both menus. I ordered the Ika Karrage Twice: both times it was burnt, one would think that after sending it back the first time because it was dark brown & black, that the 2nd time they'd have gotten it right, but they didn't care, nor did our server. I ordered an oyster shooter (better to order two for the price is $2 more) and it didn't arrive until the end of our meal & only after I asked, worse, it may have been a whole oyster, but it was shredded and in 3-4 pieces. The pork belly was excellent, but my drink, didn't arrive until over 1/2 way into our meal... What is wrong with these young people? Seriously if you can't do it correctly, maybe this isn't the job for you. My February rating gave kabuki 5 stars, this time it all fell apart. I'll think twice about coming here again, because from this experience the problem was with the staff.
