I love how bright and open this location is. There is plenty of seating and even bar like seating near the window. There are plenty of options to choose from. The food was very fresh and the service was great! I'll be back!
I was visiting the area for a concert and had to stop at this restaurant. The food was so good it definitely tasted like my momma's fried chicken! The customer service was awesome, and the wait time wasn't too long. The restaurant is very spacious, and they even have robots that help the waitstaff and bring takeout orders from the back. The restaurant is conveniently located near several parking garages, making it easy to access. I also liked that they offer gluten-free desserts. I wasn't able to try them, but the peanut butter cookies were amazing. The prices also weren't expensive.
Loving the new location of this Birmingham staple! Very inviting, clean and overall a great add for downtown being vitalized! Of course I had the famous chicken and waffles which were great as always! The delivery by the robot is a great fun addition. The food was delicious and made my day. I agree with the number one spot for chicken and waffles in Birmingham!
Today I tried the orange chicken dish, delicious, different then What I expected, but very pleased with the results. The strawberry pound cake is dangerously good, going to take one of those to go. I love the fact that they are consistent, every time I've come I've never need disappointed. Thank you Yo Mama's for holding it down for the Ham!!!!!
I specifically chose Yo' Mama's because I'd heard great things about the food and also wanted to support a Black-owned business -- and I'm so glad I did because the food absolutely did not disappoint. We ordered the hot chicken sandwich with a side of coleslaw, and both were packed with flavor. The slaw was light, crisp, and not overloaded with mayo, with just a slight peppery kick that made it incredibly tasty. The hot chicken sandwich itself wasn't overwhelmingly spicy, but it was finger-licking good -- juicy, well-seasoned, and satisfying down to the last crumb. We truly enjoyed every bite. The ambience with its bright green, purple and white colors added to the experience. The restaurant was lively and full of people, which is always a good sign. I also caught glimpses of other patrons' dishes, and everything coming out of the kitchen looked just as delicious as what we ordered. Service was friendly and welcoming, which made the visit even better. Staff members seemed genuinely happy to be there and kept things moving smoothly. The location is right in the heart of downtown Bhama, so parking is metered street parking, but the prices were reasonable and worth it for the quality and uniqueness of the food. Overall, this spot delivered on food, atmosphere, and service. Big thumbs up from me -- I'll definitely be back!
The daily specials or "meal of the day" are my go-tos! My favs are the lasagna rolls, the honey glazed salmon and the pork chop specials on Tuesdays. I'm happy they have moved into a larger building with more seating. Prices are fair. They also have a robot that delivers food if it gets really busy. Staff takes good care of you. I can't wait to try their new restaurant-On a Bun. Review coming soon!
Whenever I visit a new city, I make it a point to support a Black woman-owned restaurant--and Birmingham did not disappoint. From the moment I stepped inside, I was wowed by the space: bright, beautiful, and full of natural light. Despite the lunchtime rush, the staff was incredibly friendly, and everything was spotless--always a great sign. I went with six hot wings, freshly cut fries, and their homemade Tropical Splash. Let me tell you... I'm still thinking about those wings. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, with just the right kick of heat. The fries were golden and perfectly seasoned, and that drink? A refreshing burst of tropical flavor that tied the whole meal together. Southern food just hits different--and somehow, even the water tasted better here. I'll absolutely be back next time I'm in town!
I've been avoiding posting this review, but it wouldn't be fair to others if I didn't. I know I'll probably catch some flack or criticism for it, but it is what it is. I don't get paid for this. I don't receive free food. I experience these restaurants just like any other customer, from the moment I walk in to the moment I leave. That being said, here's my honest review of Yo' Mama's! I went here with friends and family for lunch, and my first impression was great. The restaurant was very clean, and the staff was friendly and efficient. To start on a positive note, everyone else in my group really enjoyed their food. They said the fish was well-seasoned and delicious, and they had no complaints. Unfortunately, I wasn't as lucky. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles, and while it looked absolutely delicious, the taste didn't match the appearance. Let's start with the chicken. It was fried to perfection crispy on the outside, juicy and tender inside, practically falling off the bone. No issues there. However, the biggest problem was the complete lack of seasoning. It tasted like it was simply floured and fried no salt, no pepper, nothing. I was so disappointed that I couldn't even finish it and ended up giving it away. As for the waffle, it was cooked beautifully crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside. It was good, but unfortunately, syrup didn't seem to be an option. Instead, I was given something that resembled honey butter but had a strange, fruity taste and a gritty texture, which threw it off for me. Had I just received regular syrup, I think I would have enjoyed it much more. Now, let me be clear I hate that I even have to say this but this review is not meant to bash or tear down a Black-owned business. I was genuinely excited to try this place, only to walk away feeling let down. This is why I always try to dine with others when I do reviews to get a well rounded perspective. I had three other people with me, and they all enjoyed their meals. Unfortunately, I just drew the short straw that day. Final thoughts: Based on my personal experience, I'd have to rate my meal 5/10 not because the food wasn't cooked well, but because key elements of flavor were missing. That said, would I return? Yes. The food was prepared properly, and the restaurant itself had a great atmosphere. They just missed the mark on seasoning, which is crucial. I'd still encourage others to check this place out. Every dining experience is different, and just because mine wasn't great doesn't mean yours won't be. Hopefully, if I visit again, my experience will be much better!
I came here on the Monday morning of MLK day. We were able to park on the street but if we wouldn't have found a spot there was a parking garage not too far away. The restaurant was pretty full but there was still seating. It's a large venue. The servers were nice and pretty quick as well; however, one of them forgot to wipe the last remaining table dry after they wiped it with a wet towel so we had to dry it off ourselves. I ordered the peach cobbler chicken & waffle at the recommendation of a friend who loved it. They set the peaches and syrup mixture on the side. The chicken was fried extra crispy, but I didn't taste any hint of seasoning, not even salt or pepper. It had a red tint around some parts of the chicken which my guess was probably paprika, but I could not taste that either so it was pretty bland. I put the peaches on top of the chicken and stacked the chicken over the center of the waffle since they'd placed them over to the side and then draped a small amount of the syrup mixture over the dish. The waffle was okay. I wasn't sure if it was soft in the middle from the chicken sitting on it or if it wasn't cooked long enough. Overall I did not like this dish but would return to try other items on the menu.
Some of the best home cooking with everything made to order. Any choice from the menu will come with great portions and even better taste. You're always greeted with a smile and check out brunch on the 2nd and last weekend's of the month. Run don't walk to Yo Mama's for lunch. PS-you can order ahead too from the website or toast app.
I love the new location. This time I got shrimp tacos, fries, and broccoli. I ordered online and when I came inside it was ready. The service was quick and the ambiance was spacious. I will definitely be back
Somehow this was my first time at this Birmingham staple. I tried the Hot Chicken Sandwich with fries, and I was not disappointed! The chicken was tender and flavorful, and the fries were the perfect amount of crispy. All-around a great lunch spot to zip into when you're looking for a quick, tasty lunch!

Food- wow! Felt like my own family's home cooking. Flavorful, fresh and to the point. Service- daughter took our orders and the mama brought our order to our table. She gave us great recommendations as first timers passing through the city. Ambiance- you walk up to the counter and order and then find your seat if you plan to sit there and eat (which I highly suggest). Food came out very quickly. Their menu is not extensive but they've got some heavy hitters on there. read more
I finally made it to try Yo' Mama's and opted for the much recommended Chicken & Waffles. Parking is a challenge in the area, especially with some construction nearby. They have limited outdoor seating and currently no indoor seating so it is predominately to go orders. I recommend ordering online or calling in especially during peak times. The Chicken & Waffle did not disappoint and lived up to the hype. I absolutely would 100% recommend. In addition to the syrup, I also ordered the fresh fruit and whipped cream toppings. It was great both ways but I think I would just stick with the syrup next time. The chicken was some of the best I have had and very reminiscent of my Grandmas. The waffle was not quite as crisp as I prefer but that may have been a result of the drive time back to the office enclosed in the styrofoam container. Regardless it did not take away from the the taste and enjoyment. I really wish this was closer to my office so it could be a more regular part of my lunch plans. I will definitely be back at some point though to try some of the daily specials, Shrimp & Grits, etc. read more

After a discussion of the merits of chicken and waffles (I'm a huge fan) recently, a group of friends decided they needed to introduce me to Yo Mama's since, somehow, I've never been - that was my mistake. I got the chicken and waffles - surprise, surprise. I just had to give them a try. i went with the chicken tenders, not the bone-in chicken, for simplicity's sake. I just think that it is an easier and more enjoyable experience that way. And let me tell you... they have, by far, the best chicken and waffles I've had in Birmingham. I definitely have a new 'go-to' place for when that craving hits. Sadly, they are only open limited hours, and offered no inside seating right now due to COVID. But I look forward to coming back and having their delicious food again! read more
Yo Mama's is brunch establishment located in downtown Birmingham Alabama that stays open to 230pm on a weekdays. My family and I are on a road-trip from Lousiville to Destin and are laying over in Birmingham to check out the sights. I had this brunch place at the top of my must eat list. I mean the name alone did it for me. I've joked for years when people asked me where I wanted to eat with a "yo mommas". Little did I know it was a real place in Birmingham Alabama. So we was rushing to make it here. We pulled in and street parked at like 145pm. We got in the establishment and see it was take out only and had some outdoor tables to sit. The workers here were awesome. Super nice and friendly. The epitome of what customer service is meant to be. I personally ordered a chicken and waffles. It was great. Waffles had great flavor especially. My wife got the shrimp and said it was one of the best shrimps she has ever eaten. My oldest daughter got shrimp tacos, her best friend got fish tacos and my other daughters shared chicken tenders. Everyone came away Impressed with the food. The drinks were good too. They have there own juices in three flavors. Tropical punch, lemonade and strawberry lemonade. You can't go wrong with any of the flavors. We snapped them all by getting two of each for our party 6. All three had great flavor. Overall glad we beat the time crunch and got to experience this place. Great people, drink and food. A memorable visit for our mini vacation in Birmingham. read more

So Yo'Mamas does not disappoint. The food, the service, everything was really great for my last stop in Birmingham. I sampled a little of everything we ordered except the chicken, which my friends loved. I loved my shrimp and grits, a dish I really only enjoy in the deep south and Yo mama's straight up delivers! The manager mentioned everything was sin gluten! My sample tasting of the Mac and cheese, yams and fries were all good and satisfying. I didn't particularly love the greens as they lacked depth of flavor but, they were better with hot sauce. Definitely worth a try if you're in the mood for down home soul food. If I make it back to B'ham anytime soon, I'll definitely make my way back to Yo Mama's. read more

Oh my goshhh!!! This place had some of the best gluten free food I've had ever. I got the chicken and waffles of course with grits, Mac and cheese, and she upsold me on some Oreos which were also amazing. Even if you don't have a gluten allergy I'd still recommend this place, and you couldn't even tell the difference between gf and non gf! I would literally get on a plane from Alaska to come eat here every week if I could. 10/10 read more
A very solid 5/5, hot fresh food - served exactly as we ordered it, friendly service, pretty quick despite it being lunch rush, a nice space (heard they're expanding to a larger space - even better), relaxed vibe. It stood out to me that the employees seemed to know most of their customers by name which is always just a nice touch and a good sign. Not a bad word could be said! I'm not downtown for lunch often but this is my first choice now whenever I am. My friend in town visiting really enjoyed her shrimp tacos! She had shrimp tacos another place in town over the weekend (more expensive too) and Yo Mama's was better by a mile! An establishment I'm very happy to support. read more

Covid has brought about many highs and lows. One of the highs included being able to get in on the meal of the day at Yo' Mamas! The meal of the day consisted of bacon and Gouda stuffed pork chop , smashed sweet potatoes and green beans. This was a great meal! It was so savory and very filling ,despite the pork chop being a little on the small side. Every bite made me smile and do a little dance! The service I experienced was really personable. I even chatted with one of the owners, so that was cool. She's very engaged and really seems to care about protecting guests while providing quality food. They even provided a masks to a guest who came in without one. Safety first! I've always been a Yo Mama's fan but it had grown difficult for me to visit during lunch. As a result, I hadn't visited in a really long time. Now with the current conditions, I was able to phone in my order and get in and out without any issues. I even found great parking downtown!! Currently Yo Mamas is offering pick up and curbside orders with online ordering. Add them to your take out list if you are looking for a solid lunch spot!! read more

Searched Yelp for lunch on the way from Memphis to Atlanta and found YoMama's had lots of good reviews. I enjoyed the shrimp & grits - sausage has a bit of spice; kids had chicken (tenders) & waffle; chicken tenders and the BBQ cheeseburger plate. All enjoyed, and had plenty of food. Restaurant has limited seating as others noted, but our group of 6 managed just fine on the early side of lunch. Service was friendly and quick. Would go again if we're in the area! read more

Stop everything you are doing and head over to Yo' Mama's. We had the incredible pleasure of meeting the owner who is one of the sweetest people! Menu is comfort/southern/soul food with GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS. I'm talking about fried chicken, fried shrimp, FRIED OREOS. Whether you are gluten free or not, the flavor is amazing. You would never know it's gluten free and this place is thriving! I ordered the BBQ burger. The gluten free bun was so good, held up and did not fall apart. I cannot begin to describe the flavor of that burger. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits and the fried Oreos. No words needed! The owner was so sweet and brought us some fried chicken to try and sent us on our way with some wings. Seriously. Stop what you're doing and head over! read more

It's rare that I'm downtown, during the week, in the middle of the day. So when that happens, I must partake in Yo' Mama's! Currently, they are offering curbside pickup and orders to go (maybe delivery). The dining room was closed. I went in to order my chicken and waffles meal with extra chicken. The food was ready by the time my payment went thru. I drove all the way to Hoover and my chicken was still crispy and hot... waffle was warm! I don't know what the secret is... but this place has a magical touch. The house syrup alone is worth a visit! Please go by and bless your taste buds with this delicious food! read more

I was diagnosed with Celiac disease almost 9 years ago, so I have been 100% gluten free since then. Within the past few years, I started trying out restaurants who had safe cross-contamination practices. I first ate at Yo Mama's 2 days ago. I ordered the chicken and waffles with fries. The food was so good, and the texture of the waffle was so light and fluffy, that I was afraid they accidentally gave me a regular version of the dish! If you are gluten free, you know the weird texture and small portion size are the tell tale signs something is gluten free. At Yo Mama's, that is not the case. After I didn't get even slightly sick, I knew I had to come back. I reordered the chicken and waffles with fries, but I also ordered deep fried gluten free Oreos. I have not had good American food since before my diagnosis! I honestly was almost tearing up while eating. Everyone is so kind and helpful, and the food is phenomenal. I am only in town for work and am very sad to go specifically because I can't find food like this back home. You will not regret eating here! read more

Finally!!! Yo Mama's has been on my list for quite sometime now. This was not my original place to visit today but because the other place had limited parking, I drove a little further and a light bulb went off to visit here. Now, parking is not the greatest here but I was able to find parking around the corner. There were a few people ahead of me to place orders and others had call in orders, so it took sometime to order. I thought receiving my food would take the same amount of time but as soon as I fixed my Tropical Splash and settled in my seat, my Meal of the Day arrived. I odered the fish minus the jambalaya, add cheese grits with hush puppies. The punch is tangy and delicious! The fish was fried hard like I prefer and seasoned (could have been a little less) but overall pretty good! I also enjoyed my cheese grits, creamy and cheesy. Oh and there was entertainment with two young guys, Dominique gave us a few tunes while the other guy was on the keyboard. Nice! I will be back for the chicken and waffles!!! read more
OMG! I have been wanting to try Yo' Mama's for a while now our schedules just never seem to match up but it wasn't until yesterday that I had the pleasure to finally eat here. Oh baby and what a pleasure it was!! Upon arriving me and my girlfriend ended up finding street parking very close. The meters were on and ready to take your coins. Don't forget to fill it. Anywho We make it to the restaurant it's early like 10:38am. We were greeted immediately with a nice good morning. I let the host know it was my first time. I wish I got her name very sweet young lady. She went over the menu with me and all of the entrees are gluten free. We ended up choosing the chicken and waffles. Belgian waffle with homemade syrups, you get to choose a fruit topping (right now it's mixed berries: blueberries & strawberries or peach cobbler) and topped with 6 fried chicken wings. I also tried the tropical splash it was lemonade and I can't remember what else was mixed with it but it was really good. We needed up sitting outside right now due to Covid the inside was closed which was fine the weather was nice. I ended up getting the peach cobbler topping whew it was fresh and got the perfect addition on top of the waffle. The homemade syrup and butter was so good! I devoured the waffle in minutes. Now the fried chicken wings.. some of the crispiest wings I've ever had. They were excellent. Make sure you ask for the house hot sauce! I was very impressed every other bite that I took I said d*mn this is good! It's that good. I will definitely be back. The prices were not bad at all, the food is great quality. Worth every penny! I was off work today and decided to stop by for brunch. I've been here a few times before and have always been pleased with the food and customer service. The lady working the register is always fully of energy and makes you feel welcome like you're at home. The restaurant does have inside/outside seating available for dine in customers. Due to the popularity of the restaurant it is always packed and full, which is a great thing. I ordered the shrimp and grits, a piece of catfish and the fruit punch/lemonade juice. All of their food is cooked to order and is delicious. Every time I come I am always satisfied with my food and the portion size is good as well. I highly recommend this restaurant and will continue dining here whenever I can. read more

I've always been dubious of chicken and waffles, and I had lived in the south for a while before I broke down and tried them. Yo Mamas has, hands down, the best chicken and waffles I've ever tried. The chicken is wings flavored and fried to crispy perfection, and the waffles are fluffy and delicious. I didn't actually order this dish, but my friend did and let me try it. I told our waitress how incredible it was, and she snuck me over a chicken wing of my own! They serve it with a sweet sauce that is surprisingly delicious. I asked what was in it and was told it was a secret. It kind of tasted like melted butter mixed with powdered sugar, but maybe better? The rest of our meals were great, the service gracious and efficient, and the prices reasonable. We WILL be back!!! read more

Friendly place, owners and staff. Just right potions, remember it Yo Mamas but not your mamas house, ok! Seasoned well and done just right. Parking is a bit tricky but that's true for most downtown locations. Atmosphere just right as well. I know I typed a lot of just rights but sometimes it's just right. I ordered the special the pork chop with Mac and cheese, collard greens and corn bread. read more
